Abstract:
The recent influence of climate change and land subsidence on the water levels and tidal characteristics in the German Bight is documented by regional tide gauge observations. However, in any long time series the chance arises that measurement conditions may change over time. Some of these changes occur instantaneously like the change of the sensor or corrections of the zero-point of the gauge. Other changes occur subtly, such as alterations of the regional morphology and therefore the mode of behavior at the measurement site. We present long-term changes of tidal characteristics in the waterw

The Caspian Sea (CS), the world's largest lake, is a hydrologically sensitive water body, with a water level that has been experiencing significant fluctuations. Between 1930 and 1977, the Caspian Sea level (CSL) decreased dramatically by more than 3 m, reaching 29 m below sea level (Baltic datum). Subsequently, from 1977 to 1995, an unexpected CSL rise of approximately 2.5 m (reaching -26.5 m) led to extensive flooding and various challenges in neighboring countries. Following this sharp increase, the CSL gradually decreased, with the current value of about -27.8 m in 2023. The decline in CSL

The German seaports, with their location at the interface between sea and land, will be particularly affected by the effects of climate change. In addition to sea level rise and its impact on tidal and morpho-dynamics, these include the increase in extreme temperature and precipitation events as well as possible changes in storm intensity or storm activity and water chemistry.

Large hydrodynamic and morphodynamic changes have taken place in the western Dutch Wadden Sea due to the closure of the Zuider Sea in the early 1930s. Hydrodynamic simulations for three situations, viz. just before the closure, just after the closure and at present, have been carried out in order to investigate the hydrodynamic changes since the closure and to improve our understanding of the observed morphodynamic changes. The model results show a large increase in tidal range after the closure of the Zuider Sea. This increase continued to grow after the closure due to bathymetric change and

For coastal zone management, it is important to predict future changes in external forces and beach topography due to climate change. In particular, as wave direction is one of the dominant factors in the longshore sediment transport, changes in wave direction exert significant impacts on future beach topography. Despite many studies carried out on the future projection of wave climate, there are few examples of studies on future beach topography due to climate change. This study aims to assess future changes in wave direction by wave simulation considering climate change, and to clarify the e

The rate with which change occurs has increased dramatically over the years. At the same time, the change management literature is full of claims about the high failure rate of change implementation programmes in organisations. In this position paper a case is made that change initiatives frequently fail because they are not holistic in nature. The paper argues that change can be managed more effectively if the various interconnected and interacting elements of the system are identified, the divergent interests of the various stakeholders are recognised, and the entire change process is manage

As a public and policy issue, climate change boils down to four overarching issues: 1) climate is changing; 2) people are causing climate to change; 3) the societal consequences of climate change are highly uncertain but include the potential for serious impacts; and 4) there are numerous policy options for climate change risk management, most of which are well characterized (i.e., have known strengths and weaknesses). These four conclusions are based on comprehensive assessment of scientific understanding and each is the result of multiple independent lines of evidence. The study presented he
