Abstract:
This article examines suburban neighbourhood trajectories from 1970 to 2010 in the 100 most populous metropolitan areas in the US within the context of discussions around suburban decline and reinvestment. A weighted composite index of neighbourhood change indicators was used to identify the relative status of urban and suburban neighbourhoods. Index values were ranked by metropolitan area, and neighbourhoods were assigned to a corresponding quartile. The quartiles formed a status trajectory sequence, categorised as Reduced, Reduced with recovery, Stable or Improved. Neighbourhood trajectories were compared across city and suburb as well as across prewar, postwar, and modern suburban types. Despite increased discussion around suburban decline and suburban poverty, suburban neighbourhoods maintained a higher status than the city, were more likely to recover from reduced status and had higher frequencies of status improvement. The majority of suburban neighbourhoods occupied the highest status ranking in all decades. Stability was the most common trajectory for suburbs, and stable suburban neighbourhoods were higher status than stable urban neighbourhoods. The findings highlight geographies of neighbourhood inequalities and contribute to our understanding of regional and suburban neighbourhood change dynamics.

Abstract:
The status change riot model opens up a new avenue of riot explanation. One that takes into consideration ethnic group relations and factors of group status and honor—i.e., dignity. The riot model asserts that the potential for a riot arises when new and old concepts about group statuses, and as such, ideas about appropriate intergroup behaviors, give rise to disputative intergroup interactions. The model affirms that a trigger event either by itself or in accumulation with other events drives actors to a dignity threshold that prompts them to riot. The model further relates that, once started, a riot will follow a general riot pattern that ends in either a status resolution or an increased strain in ethnic group relations.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to investigate resistance to change. This is a well-documented phenomenon in the change literature. Overcoming this resistance is a critical component to effective change leadership. Methodology: A structured interview technique was employed using a survey instrument that guided the interview pro- cess. Interviews were completed with 89 individuals. A snowball sampling technique was employed beginning with 30 undergraduate students who each completed the interview. Main Findings: This research indicates that individuals who are dissatisfied with the status quo are less likely to resist change. Individuals who perceived that the current status served them well and met their current needs were less likely to embrace or support proposed changes to the status quo. This perception demonstrates risk aversion to potential losses. Conversely, individuals who perceived that the current state did not serve them well or meet their current needs and interests were more likely to embrace and support proposed changes to the status quo demonstrating risk - seeking in the face of potential gains. Implications: The results can be applied as an effective method for moving people through the change process by convinc- ing them that the current situation has low utility. Novelty: This paper is one of only a few instances where Prospect Theory and loss aversion has been linked to resistance to change.

Abstract:
48 Background: Treatment and prognosis of breast cancer is determined by tumor subtype. Tumor heterogeneity and lack of stability in ER, PR and HER2 has been described. We evaluated the changes receptor status between primary and residual disease after NCT and its association with outcome. Methods: 398 women with known ER, PR and HER2 status in primary and residual disease were identified. Patients were classified as no receptor change vs. any receptor change. For ER and PR we explored absolute percent changes. Descriptive statistics were used. Kaplan-Meier method was used to estimate overall (OS) and recurrence-free (RFS) survival. Cox proportional models were fit to determine the association of receptor status changes with outcomes after adjustment for patient and disease characteristics. Results: From the 398 patients, 162 (40.7%) had a change in at least one biomarker. Twenty-three (10.9%) of the 211 ER-positive tumors changed to ER-negative and 39 (20.8%) of the 187 ER-negative tumors changed to ER-positive. Fifty-seven (35.2%) of the 162 PR-positive tumors changed to PR-negative and 28 (11.9%) of the 235 PR-negative tumors changed to PR-positive. Lastly, 29 (40%) of the 72 HER2-positive tumors changed to HER2-negative and among the 35 trastuzumab-treated patients, 16 (45.7%) had HER2 status changed. At a median follow up of 40 months, 128 women (32%) had died, and 167 (41.8%) had experienced a recurrence. Five-year OS estimates were 73% and 63% for patients with or without any receptor change, (P=0.07); 5-year RFS estimates were 63% and 48% for patients with or without any receptor change, (P=0.003). Among patients with baseline ER-positive tumors, 5-year OS estimates was 73% and 87% (P=0.03), and the 5-year RFS estimates was 59% and 71% (P=0.03) for those whose absolute ER percent decrease was less than 20% or more than 20%, respectively. A change in any receptor was associated with better RFS (HR: 0.63, 95% CI 0.44-0.9) but not with OS, (HR: 0.79, 95% CI 0.53-1.18). Conclusions: Changes in ER, PR and HER2 status between the primary and the residual disease after neoadjuvant chemotherapy are frequent. In this study, a change in biomarker status was associated with significant improved RFS.

Abstract:
Through a consideration of residential propinquity, religious and cultural activity, language retention, and levels of exogamy, this article provides a microstudy of the Welsh community in San Francisco and identifies the Welsh as a distinct ethnolinguistic community in the city during the late decades of the nineteenth century and the early decades of the twentieth. What was the nature of Welsh immigrant culture, and to what extent were working-class Welsh people involved in its expression? In addition, through an analysis of intragenerational changes in socioeconomic status, as indicated by occupational mobility, the article tests the assumption that the Welsh were prime illustrations of the “American Dream,” thus providing a clearer picture than the images promulgated by contemporary Welsh leaders who strove to emphasize the industry and upward mobility of their fellow countrymen. Did the Welsh as a group occupy a privileged position in the occupational hierarchy, and were they universally successful in improving on this position?
