Abstract:
The COVID-19 pandemic, and resultant “Stay-at-Home” orders, may have impacted adults’ positive health behaviors (sleep, physical activity) and negative health behaviors (alcohol consumption, drug use, and tobacco use). The purpose of this study was to investigate how these health behaviors changed (increased/improved or decreased/worsened) at the early stages of the pandemic, what participant characteristics were associated with health behavior changes, and why these behavioral changes may have occurred. A convenience sample of 1809 adults residing in the United States completed a 15-min self-report questionnaire in April and May 2020. Multinomial logistic regressions and descriptive statistics were used to evaluate how, for whom, and why these health behaviors changed. Participants were primarily female (67.4%), aged 35–49 years (39.8%), college graduates (83.3%), non-tobacco users (74.7%), and had previously used marijuana (48.6%). Overall, participants primarily reported a decrease in physical activity, while sleep and all of the negative health behaviors remained the same. Changes in negative health behaviors were related (p < 0.05) to sex, age, parental status, educational status, job status, BMI, and depression scores. Changes in positive health behaviors were related (p < 0.05) to sex, parental status, job status, and depression scores. Having more time available during the pandemic was the most commonly cited reason for changing health behaviors (negative and positive). Public health efforts should address the potential for long-term health consequences due to behavior change during COVID-19.

Abstract:
BACKGROUND: The coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic has been a global challenge since its first encounter. It has changed the daily lives of families including the sexual behavior of couples due to public health concerns and government policy to restrict people’s movement. It has changed both interpersonal and partner relationships; the time availability at home, the continued presence of children at home, the fear of infection, and the inability to physically interact with others have changed most people’s sexual behavior. AIM: This study aims to evaluate sexual behavior changes in marriage people of Indonesia during the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: A cross-sectional online study was conducted, using self-constructed questionnaires. The convenience sample was collected from married males and females for at least 10 months from November 2020 to January 2021. The participants were asked 19 and 20 questions for female and male, respectively, which was an adaptation of the previous questionnaires. Furthermore, a study was conducted to analyze descriptively the changes of sexuality among married people before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. RESULTS: About 201 participants who completed the survey, 110 males (54.7%) and 91 females (45.3%) were included in the analyses. The mean age of participants was 37 years old. Most of the participants have middle to high socio-economy classes and have children at home. Shifting in the work schedule is the main reason to change sexual behaviors. Participants experienced significant changes in sexual behaviors and some sexual responses before and during the restriction time. CONCLUSION: The pandemic has changed sexual behaviors due to social restrictions in Indonesia. These findings imply messages about the consequences of the pandemic on sexual behaviors that may affect the sexual relationship, marriage stability, and physical health itself to fight coronavirus.

Abstract:
The COVID-19 pandemic has had tremendous impact on Americans’ lives including their personal and social behaviors. While people of all ages are affected in some way by the pandemic, older persons have been far more likely to suffer the most severe health consequences. For this reason, how people have responded to mitigating behaviors to COVID-19 may differ by age. Using a nationally representative sample from the longitudinal data of the Understanding America Study (UAS), we examined differentials in behavioral responses to COVID-19 by age and how they changed over the first three months of the pandemic. Behavioral responses and changes in behavior over time differed by age, type of behaviors and time reference. At the beginning of the pandemic (March, 2020), older and younger people were similar in their likelihood of engaging in preventive personal behaviors when controlling for other influences. As the pandemic progressed, however, older people adopted mitigating personal behavioral changes more than younger people, such that about 1–2 months after the pandemic started, older people were more likely to comply with suggested behaviors and regulations including practicing better hygiene, quarantining, and social distancing. One month into the pandemic, older people were less likely than younger people to engage in two of four risky behaviors. The change in risky behavior over time did not differ by age; but both younger and older people were more likely to engage in risky behaviors after two months. Being female, a member of a racial/ethnic minority group, higher socioeconomic status, having more COVID-19 cases in one’s state of residence, a higher perceived risk for infection and dying, and a more left-leaning political orientation were related to adopting more pandemic mitigating behaviors.

Abstract:
Abstract Sensory behaviors are widely reported in autism spectrum disorder (ASD). However, the impact of these behaviors on families remains largely unknown. This study explored how caregivers of minimally verbal children with ASD responded to their child's sensory behaviors. Using a mixed-methods approach, we examined two variables for each endorsed child behavior: (1) Did the caregiver respond/try to change the behavior? and (2) What response did they employ? Caregivers did not differ in the frequency of responses to hypo- or hyper-responsive behaviors but employed different responses. Caregivers responded to more social sensory behaviors and predominately changed their own behavior in response to their child's. Our findings demonstrate how extensively caregivers adapt to their child's behaviors and vary their response dependent on behavior exhibited.

Abstract:
AbstractBehavior modification as behavior therapy, this technique is often used by educators and parents because its success is easily observed and easily appilied to other bwhaviors, is a soluble use of conditioning techniques in humans to produce changes in the frequency of certain behaviors, namely changing non-adaptive behavior, by leaving it, and adaptive behavior confirmed, behavior change is carried out with a carefully crafted experimental desaign, this behavior modification makes it possible to be realized to the actors to be changed ie change the maladaptive behavior towards adaptive behavior. This qualitative research was conducted on children in Kenteng sub-village, Sumberejo village, Sine Ngawi sub-district. Research subjects are parents, neighbors and children who have maladaprive behavior. At the end of the study showed that self-management techniques and social skills training is able to change the behavior of children both to anticipate so as not to behave negatively and eliminate negative behaviors and foster positive behavior. Keywords : behavior modification, self-management, social skills

Full text
Abstract:
Aim/Purpose: This article aimed to design and evaluate a pedagogical technique for altering students’ classroom digital multitasking behaviors. The technique we designed and evaluated is called course-based undergraduate research experience (CURE). With this technique, the students wrote a research article based on a multitasking experiment that the instructor conducted with the students. The students conducted a literature review, developed their own research questions, they analyzed experiment data, and presented results. This study evaluated the how the CURE contributed to student multitasking behavior change. Background: Multitasking is defined as doing more than one thing at a time. Multitasking is really the engagement in individual and discrete tasks that are performed in succession. Research showed that students multitasked very often during courses. Researchers indicated that this was a problem especially for online teaching, because when students went online, they tended to multitask. Extant research indicated that digital multitasking in class harmed student performance. Multiple studies suggested that students who multitasked spent more time finishing their tasks and made more mistakes. Regardless of students’ gender or GPA, students who multitasked in class performed worse and got a lower grade than those who did not. However, little is known about how to change students’ digital multitasking behaviors. In this study, we used the transtheoretical model of behavior change to investigate how our pedagogical technique (CURE) changed students’ digital multitasking behaviors. Methodology: Using a course-based undergraduate research experience design, a new classroom intervention was designed and evaluated through a content analysis of pre- and post-intervention student reflections. As part of the course-based undergraduate research experience design, the students conducted a literature review, developed their own research questions, they analyzed experiment data, and presented results. This study evaluated the how teaching using a course-based undergraduate research experience contributed to student multitasking behavior change. Transtheoretical model of behavior change was used to investigate how our pedagogical technique changed students’ digital multitasking behaviors. Contribution: The paper described how teaching using a course-based undergraduate research experience can be used in practice. Further, it demonstrated the utility of this technique in changing student digital multitasking behaviors. This study contributed to constructivist approaches in education. Other unwanted student attitudes and behaviors can be changed using this approach to learning. Findings: As a result of CURE teaching, a majority of students observed the negative aspects of multitasking and intended to change their digital multitasking behaviors. Sixty-one percent of the participants experienced attitude changes, namely increased negative attitude towards multitasking in class. This is important because research found that while both students and instructors believed off-task technology use hinders learning, their views differed significantly, with more instructors than students feeling strongly that students’ use of technology in class is a problem. Moreover, our study showed that with teaching using CURE, it is possible to move the students on the ladder of change as quickly as within one semester (13 weeks). Seventy-one percent of the students reported moving to a higher stage of change post-intervention. Recommendations for Practitioners: Faculty wishing to curb student digital multitasking behaviors may conduct in-class experimentation with multitasking and have their students write a research report on their findings. Course-based undergraduate research experiences may make the effects of digital multitasking more apparent to the students. The students may become more aware of their own multitasking behaviors rather than doing them habitually. This technique is also recommended for those instructors who would like to introduce academic careers as a potential career option to their students. Recommendation for Researchers: Researchers should explore changing other unwanted undergraduate student behaviors with course-based undergraduate experiences. Researchers may use the transtheoretical model of change to evaluate the effectiveness of techniques used to change behaviors. Impact on Society: The negative outcomes of digital multitasking are not confined to the classroom. Digital multitasking impacts productivity in many domains. If techniques such as those used in this article become more common, changes in multitasking intentions could show broad improvements in productivity across many fields. Future Research: This paper constitutes a pilot study due to the small convenience sample that is used for the study. Future research should replicate this study with larger and randomized samples. Further investigation of the CURE technique can improve its effectiveness or reduce the instructor input while attaining the same behavioral changes.

Abstract:
Adopting healthy eating behavior is important in achieving successful weight loss after bariatric surgery. This study aims to determine the changes in eating behaviors 6 months after surgery. Fifty-seven patients who went through bariatric surgery in two tertiary referral hospitals were recruited and interviewed before surgery (T0), three (T1), and six (T2) months after surgery. Eating behaviors were assessed using the Dutch Eating Behavior Questionnaire (DEBQ), which measured emotional, external, and restrained eating. Higher subscale scores indicate strong behavioral traits. Other information including psychological distress, quality of life, socio-demography, and morbidity were collected. Generalized Estimating Equation (GEE) model was developed to study the change in eating behaviors and its’ predictors over time. Participants of the study were mostly women, from the Malay ethnic group and the average age at the time of surgery was 39.4 years. Emotional and external eating scores changed significantly over time with the values recorded at various time intervals as follows: 2.06 and 2.86 before surgery; 1.64 and 2.25 three months after surgery; and 1.81 and 2.40, 6 months after surgery. Reduction in the third month followed by a slight increase at the sixth was noted. Restrained eating did not show a significant change. The presence of diabetes was also associated with higher emotional and external eating scores. Further, higher anxiety scores were associated with higher external eating. Favorable changes in eating behaviors were noted after bariatric surgery. However, a risk of a reversal in the improvement was present. The emotional and external eating behaviors in surgical candidates should be identified and addressed accordingly with special attention to diabetic patients.

Abstract:
This article discusses a longitudinal study of change in disruptive behaviors among nursing home residents treated with neuroleptics compared with those not treated with neuroleptics. Observations were made of 201 participants on admission to and after 1 year in eight skilled nursing facilities. Nine disruptive behaviors were measured using the Psychogeriatric Dependency Rating Scale with nursing assistants. Neuroleptic use was documented from medication records. Odds ratios are reported for the association of behavior at baseline and use of neuroleptics on nine problem behaviors. For those who received neuroleptics during the year, there was greater change in both developing and resolving disruptive behaviors than for those not receiving neuroleptics. For both groups, restless or pacing behavior and belligerent behavior manifested by refusing instructions changed the most, both in developing and in apparently resolving. Our results show that change in disruptive behaviors occurs among nursing home residents regardless of neuroleptic use, but it occurs more frequently among those who receive neuroleptic medication. Knowledge of which disruptive behaviors are most likely to resolve or develop is important in training nursing home staff to cope with the behaviors as well as in planning interventions that may modify such behaviors.

Abstract:

Informal caregiving has been a widely-studied topic recently because many people with chronic and terminal illnesses are being cared for by family and friends in their homes. However, little research has focused on informal caregivers for those with one condition, frontotemporal dementia (FTD). The purpose of this study was to understand how the changed behavior of someone with FTD affects persons caring for those with this type of dementia, with a specific focus on the stress level of informal caregivers. Eleven caregivers participated in this study, with an age range of 42 to 81 years.

Caregivers whose care recipients are institutionalized reported a higher stress level during time of diagnosis, than that of caregivers who cared for their family member at home. Qualitative responses indicated that a lack of knowledge about FTD can result in a misdiagnosis, leaving caregivers more stressed because the care recipients’ behavior is left untreated.

Abstract:
The purpose of the study has been to investigate how digitalization affects different companies and thus inform Fastighets AB L E Lundberg if their existing tenants get changed behaviors within the business which in the long term can lead to changed facillity needs. This is to inform Fastighets AB L E Lundberg if they need to revise the business model with long contractual periods that may become unsustainable in the future. The study's results are based on responses from interviewees who represent the various companies that rent commercial premises by Fastighets AB L E Lundberg. A total of nine companies were interviewed, of which a company was interviewed via electronic source. The interviews suggested that the interviewees answer a questionnaire that contained questions about "digitalization" then - and presently as well as "real estate" then - and presently. The result shows that all companies are aware of the concept of digitalization and have changed some part of the business in the digital way. Some companies, depending on their business, have been affected more internally while other companies have been affected more externally to customers and environment. According to the result digitalization will affect companies to an increasing extent in the future and impose higher demands on the property owner's business model with long contract times.

Abstract:
This study examined the effects of behavior change on psychological health among gay and bisexual men of Portland, Oregon who were at risk for contracting AIDS. Cross-sectional self-reports of personal experiences were obtained in Summer, 1991. Sexual behaviors were used as predictors of self-efficacy, depression, anxiety, and subjective well-being. Adopting safer sexual behaviors was psychologically more costly than continuing to engage in high risk behaviors, or long-term adherence to safer behaviors. Behaviors amenable to short-term change differed from those conducive to long-term maintenance. Behavior change was also found to have a beneficial effect on self-efficacy. These findings suggest that behavior change, traditionally considered as the endpoint of a process, might more appropriately be considered as an interim stage influenced by earlier, and having an influence on later, psychological health. By integrating models of behavior change from research on alcohol and drug use, smoking, and weight control, researchers studying AIDS-related behavior might better understand the place of behavior change in the process of change, relapse, and maintenance.

Abstract:
The most devastating effects of climate change may be avoided if humans reduce activities that produce greenhouse gases and engage instead in more sustainable ecological behaviors. The current mixed methods study of 279 undergraduate students explored whether environmental worldview, belief in climate change, knowledge of climate change, personal efficacy, and intention to address climate change influenced participants’ engagement in ecological behavior. Results indicated that those with a stronger intention to address climate change and a more ecocentric worldview reported significantly more ecological behavior. Next, the study examined whether participants’ intentions to address climate change mediated the relationship between their belief in climate change and engagement in ecological behavior and whether intentions mediated the relationship between efficacy and ecological behavior. Intentions to address climate change did not mediate the relationship between belief and ecological behavior but fully mediated the relationship between efficacy to address climate change and ecological behavior.

Abstract:
Objective: To examine the existing literature on the relation between contextual and health factors that influence parent intention for child health behavior change, focusing on the importance of a strong theoretical background and measures that match the proposed theory, and to determine the use of intention in the proposed sample of articles. Method: A preliminary search was conducted, seeking out interventions and programs that target nutrition and/or physical activity in relation to childhood obesity prevention using PsycINFO and MedLine databases. This search totaled 29 studies to be included in the final review. Results: Ten articles studied intention as a dependent variable, twelve with intention as in independent variable, and seven with intention as a mediating variable. A majority of the articles included a theoretical background (86.2%), while 13.8% of the articles did not include any. Seven overall constructs of interest were established: intention/goal, attitudes, self-efficacy, behavior, social support, knowledge/awareness, and norms. Effect sizes for significant pathways were collected/calculated for the specified variables. Finally, behavioral intention was measured inconsistently in each article, some providing reliability, validity, and/or references for the scales measuring intention, while some did not. Conclusions: Childhood obesity prevention and intervention literature is inconsistent in the use of theory, strong measurement, and incorporation of other fields of psychology.

Wiard, Theodore John. "Leadership Behaviors in the Midst of an Organizational Change Initiative| A Case Study." Thesis, Grand Canyon University, 2018. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=10826393.

Full text
Abstract:

The purpose of this qualitative, single case study was to understand leadership behaviors that motivate internal stakeholders to trust a leader’s vision, embrace change, facilitate employee willingness to passionately implement actions needed for an organizational change initiative and willingly sustain a change initiative. A sample of 20 internal stakeholders was studied, five leaders and 15 followers within an organization of 800+ employees, located in the southwestern region of the United States, which is currently undergoing a change initiative. The research questions were based upon Kurt Lewin’s three-step model of change: unfreezing, transitioning, and refreezing. This research asked how leadership behaviors facilitated employee willingness to trust a leader’s vision and embrace change, passionately implement actions needed for a change, and sustain a change initiative, making an implemented initiative the new normal for the organization. Three themes emerged to address the research questions: 1) know your audience and walk your talk; 2) communication, vision, trust, and buy-in; and 3) residual passion and perseverance. Findings suggested that leadership behaviors influence internal stakeholders in relation to a change initiative and that leaders who are hands-on, consistent, and demonstrate a clear vision increased the possibility of gleaning passion and trust to increase the potential for success during an organizational change initiative.

This article presents an analysis of the pro active social behavior construct based on the sociallearning theory. Self efficacy is briefly reviewed and discussed in the context of Bandura' s conceptual work. Reference is made to cognitive variables such as values and beliefs, as fundamental principies in the development of the pro active social behavior. I examine che distinctions between fears of failure, success, and rejection as they relate to the process of self sabotage. Comments are made on the transformation of meaning and its benefits on fear extinction. Finally, I briefly describe the principies of the associative neurophysiological conditioning as a therapeutic program for the management of emocional states by the individual.

Abstract:
Micro forming technology becomes a promising approach to fabricate micro-parts due to its advantages of high productivity, low production cost, good product quality and mechanical properties, and near net or net shape characteristics. However, the deformation behaviors of material change and the so-called size effect occurs when the part dimension is decreased to micro-scale. To analyze the quality of micro-parts, the material flow stress, anisotropy, ductility and formability in micro-scale need to be considered. In the paper, micro tensile and micro deep drawing tests of Ti foils were used and the size effects on deformation behavior and formability of micro sheet metal forming were studied. The results show that the flow stress of Ti foils is related with foil thickness and grain size. The fracture behaviors also have been changed from shear dimple to slip separation with the decrease of foil thickness. The formability of micro deep drawing becomes worse with the decrease of micro cup dimension and the increase of grain size.

Abstract:
This study deals with the rocking behavior of a rigid block subjected to horizontal harmonic excitations with minute fluctuation. Nonlinear rocking behaviors may be often accompanied by minute changes of rocking system parameters, such as friction and restitution coefficients, depending on contact conditions between the block and the base. In this paper, the minute fluctuation of excitation amplitude is imitated by random numbers with normal probability distribution and the fluctuation range is adjusted by their standard deviation. Analytical results in our previous studies have shown that rocking responses are very sensitive to small changes of friction coefficients and noise included in the excitation and the distribution of rocking response is greatly affected by the effects. Nonrecurring rocking responses observed in our previous experimental works have been reproduced by simulation considering minute fluctuation of excitation amplitude. Minute changes of excitation amplitude make the rocking response unstable and aperiodic, and distribution of rocking responses is also massively changed by adding the excitation noise.

Abstract:
API-X70 and X80 steel with good low temperature toughness were developed. The microstructure and mechanical properties of API-X70 steel plate and pipe were investigated and the buckling behavior of X80 steel pipe was evaluated through large scale deformation tester. API-X70 steels with 30 mm thickness were manufactured by finished rolling below Ar3. The microstructure was composed of polygonal ferrite with subgrain network, degenerated pearlite and bainite. The yield strengths of API-X70 pipes were lower than those of plates, while the tensile strengths were similar in both states. The Charpy upper shelf energy of API-X70 steel plate was about 350 J and the energy transition temperature was below −100 °C. The separations were observed on the DWTT fracture surface of API-X70 steel plate. The DWTT 85 SA% transition temperature of plate was below −30 °C. It was conjectured that the separation associated with the low temperature rolling might increase the strength without deterioration of DWTT properties. API-X80 steels with 19mm thickness were fabricated with finished rolling above Ar3 and pipes with 30” diameter were made with R/B process. The deformation capacity of X80 linepipe was evaluated by large scale deforming machine operating under the loading of bending and axial compression force. It was showed that 2nd moment term should be calculated more correctly to measure the accurate critical compressive strain of pipe in the loading of bending and axial compression force. The compressive axial force had a little effect on the peak moment but changed the deformation pattern and state of critical compressive strain of linepipe. It was found that X80 linepipe used in this study was within the specification of DNV and API codes in terms of buckling capacity.

Yang, Xinjun, Xiang Ling, Sisheng Yang, and Shuhua Lu. "Investigation on the Intrinsic Plasticity of Gradient Nano-Grained AISI 304 Stainless Steel Treated by Ultrasonic Impact Treatment." In ASME 2014 Pressure Vessels and Piping Conference. American Society of Mechanical Engineers, 2014. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/pvp2014-28239.

Full text
Abstract:
The gradient nano-grained (GNG) structure was formed on the top layer of AISI 304 with coarse grains (CG) by ultrasonic impact treatment. The impact velocity was 5 m/s and the coverage was changed from 3000% to 15000% to obtain different microstructure GNG /CG materials. The tensile test and small punch test were also performed to investigate the uniaxial and biaxial deformation behaviors of the GNG / CG materials. The results showed that the yield strength σs was enhanced in both uniaxial and biaxial deformation conditions. But the tensile strength σb was not nearly changed. The tensile fracture appeared to be dimple. The size of the dimples changed with gradient from the treated surface to the matrix. The strain localization was effectively suppressed in both conditions. AISI 304 of GNG / CG structure was elastically homogeneous but plastically gradient which offered unusual mechanical responses. So the GNG / CG 304 showed intrinsic plasticity like coarse grain one.

Abstract:
In order to reveal the mechanisms of heat transfer enhancement in nanofluids from the flow characteristics, this paper firstly used LES (Large eddy simulation)–Lagrange method to simulate the turbulent flow of nanofluids through a straight circular tube. It has been observed that nanoparticles would move up and down and sideways besides main flowing. The turbulent characteristics of nanofluids have been changed greatly in comparison with pure water: the turbulent intensity and Reynolds stress are enhanced obviously; there are more vortexes in the flow field. These flow characteristics of nanofluids can effectively strengthen the transport of momentum, mass and energy, which is the main reason for heat transfer enhancement in nanofluids. It is also found that nanofluids containing smaller diameter nanoparticles have higher turbulent intensity and flow activity. The flow characteristics of nanofluids are sensitive to the changes of smaller diameter nanoparticle size. While using different nanoparticle materials, the flow characteristics of nanofluids have a little change. At last, to verify the aforesaid views, the flow behaviors of nanofluids in the near wall region and main flow region have been simulated by molecular dynamics.

Abstract:
Molecular dynamics simulations were conducted with three interatomic potentials for face-centered cubic (FCC) metals with different stacking fault energies (SFEs), and the effect of the SFE on the dislocation behaviors was evaluated by incorporating thermal fluctuation. The separation distance between two partial dislocations fluctuated and was changed locally by thermal vibration, and the fluctuation increased with temperature. For a low-SFE metal, thermal vibration can hardly induce reversions into a perfect dislocation. This causes a characteristic morphology for interactions between a line dislocation and irradiation-induced defects for austenitic stainless steels.

Full text
Abstract:
Organizational culture has been extensively studied since the 1950’s. The research consistently demonstrates that an organization’s culture has a direct and immediate impact on the behaviors of the people working within the organization. For many years, the culture of an organization was not a part of the evaluation process when performance deficiencies or incidents were evaluated. In some instances, organizations were even told specifically that such ‘soft’ issues were not to be considered. Now, it seems that the pendulum has swung completely in the opposite direction. Organizations are encouraged and sometimes even required to consider safety culture contributions to performance problems and accidents/incidents. Few systematic methods exist to evaluate the contributions of safety culture to incident and accidents as part of a root cause analysis. This paper explores several questions related to the importance of safety culture and how it can be evaluated and changed for the betterment of the organization(s) involved. Some of the critical questions are: 1) How is it possible that safety culture has become so important in evaluating the performance of an organization? 2) Whether in terms of deficiencies or accident/incidents — can safety culture be reliably measured, particularly during a root cause analysis? 3) If it can be measured, how can it be changed? 4) Does organizational culture change have to take years to accomplish?

Full text
Abstract:
In this study, the behavior of condensing single vapor bubble in subcooled boiling flow within two different vertical rectangular channels has been numerically investigated by using the VOF (Volume of Fluid) multiphase flow model. The mass and energy transfer model of bubble condensing process induced from the interfacial heat transfer was proposed to describe the interfacial transportation between the two phases. The results of VOF simulations showed good agreements with previous experimental data in the bubble size variation and lifetime. The bubble lifetime was almost proportional to bubble initial size and prolonged by system pressure. With the increase of subcooling, the bubble lifetime reduces significantly, and the effect of mass flux could be negligible. When bubble size increased, the bubble shape tends to be changed in a large-scale channel. The VOF simulation results of deformation have good agreement with those of Kamei’ experiment and the results of MPS (Moving Particle Semi-implicit) simulation in the large-scale channel. Furthermore, the initial bubble size, subcooling of liquid and system pressure play an important role to influence the bubble deformation behaviors significantly. The bubble could deform sharper with the increase of subcooling and initial diameter, or could breakup when the subcooling and the initial diameter reached a certain value at the last bubble stage. Whereas the trend of bubble deformation would be weaken with the increase of system pressure.

Abstract:
Secondary suspension of railway three-piece-trucks hasn’t changed much in the past century. Despite this, its most common damping element, the friction wedge, is not yet fully understood. The frictional damping is a known source of non-linearity and non-smoothness that imposes chaotic behaviors to the system, making the mathematical modeling of such devices a difficult task. The present paper presents a multi-body model of a three-piece-truck’s secondary suspension and the results of its simulations with three types of commonly used friction models.

In ASME 2019 6th International Conference on Micro/Nanoscale Heat and Mass Transfer. American Society of Mechanical Engineers, 2019. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/mnhmt2019-3944.

Abstract:
Abstract CO2 absorption performance in gas-liquid system is affected by nanoparticles. The enhancement mechanisms involved have been extensively paid attention. The CO2 gas bubble behaviors and the characteristics of the nanoparticle motion have been clarified in the present study. The equivalent substitution method is used to regard the liquid with nanoparticles as a continuous term with changed physical properties, that is, nanofluid. Therefore, the volume-of-fluid (VOF) method is employed to well predict the gas bubble behaviors and mass transfer coefficient in nanofluid. It is found that the mass transfer coefficient in the gas-liquid system for CO2 absorption can be significantly enhanced by Al2O3 nanoparticles. With the increase of nanoparticles volume concentration, the surface renewal frequency increases dramatically. The discrete-particle-method (DPM) is adopted to track the motion of nanoparticles. In this way, the deformation of the bubbles and the motion of the nanoparticle are well captured. It is concluded that the enhanced mass transfer coefficient in gas-liquid-nanoparticle system is not only related to the Brownian motion of the particles, but also related to the nanoparticle deduced turbulence in the liquid field.

Full text
Abstract:
Studies have indicated that emotions can significantly be influenced by environmental factors; these factors can also significantly influence drivers’ emotional state and, accordingly, their driving behavior. Furthermore, as the demand for autonomous vehicles is expected to significantly increase within the next decade, a proper understanding of drivers’/passengers’ emotions, behavior, and preferences will be needed in order to create an acceptable level of trust with humans. This paper proposes a novel semi-automated approach for understanding the effect of environmental factors on drivers’ emotions and behavioral changes through a naturalistic driving study. This setup includes a frontal road and facial camera, a smart watch for tracking physiological measurements, and a Controller Area Network (CAN) serial data logger. The results suggest that the driver’s affect is highly influenced by the type of road and the weather conditions, which have the potential to change driving behaviors. For instance, when the research defines emotional metrics as valence and engagement, results reveal there exist significant differences between human emotion in different weather conditions and road types. Participants’ engagement was higher in rainy and clear weather compared to cloudy weather. More-over, engagement was higher on city streets and highways compared to one-lane roads and two-lane highways.
