Full textSince the end of the Second World War, Quebec society has undergone major changes that may have influenced the recent increase in the standard of living of Quebecers: i) major school reforms; ii) the change from the Fordist model of production to the post-Fordist model of production; iii) increased contribution of women to the labor market; iv) the change from the modern family model to the contemporary family model; and v) the aging of the population. The main objectives of this thesis are, on the one hand, to better understand how these transformations could have affected the increase in the standard of living from 1986 to 2016 and, on the other hand, to highlight the inequalities in the standard of living between households according to their characteristics. To do this, we propose to examine the evolution of the standard of living from a macroeconomic perspective, using real GDP per capita, and from a microeconomic perspective using adjusted income. Some of our variables had negative impacts on the standard of living (changes in the demographic profile of the population, the decrease in the number of workers per household, the decrease in the number of hours worked level as well as changes in household composition). Other variables had nuanced impacts or little impact (changes in the age and sex of the primary maintainer, the decrease in household size and the stagnation of employment income). On the other hand, certain variables had positive impacts (the evolution of the employment rate, the growth of productivity, the decrease in the number of dependent children per household, the increase in the level of education and the growth government transfers).

Full textEngineering techniques, during the 1960-1970 years, have been deployed in the constructionof huge road infrastructures for the social and human welfare by the use of science andtechnique. Nowadays, the engineering vantage has change. At the first sight, transition seemsclear. Today, users don’t have to conform their behaviours to the road environmenttransformations. It belongs to engineers to build road infrastructures adapted to the variousdriver’s behaviours. The incorporation of road safety audit in the French Ministry of Ecology,Sustainable Development and Sea (MEEDDM) and in the Quebec Ministry of Transports(MTQ), exemplifies this turning point. First, road safety audit is applied in a new frameworkcontrol system for the expertise independence purpose. Second, it introduces a newengineering approach called proactive approach. This one breaks with the previousapproaches by transcending technical control with the use of professional experiences anddriver’s knowledge in order to adapt infrastructure to driver’s behaviours. This cognitivetransformation will be the object of our research. Specifically, we will study the changeleaded by experiential knowledge. Paradoxically, we will note traditional cognitiveframeworks, which pertain to French and Quebec cultural engineering, in a renewedengineering approach. Then we will show that road safety audit incorporation more underlinea transformation of the expert social role than a cognitive change. This social rolemodification reflects to new forms of state action legitimacy. Indeed, considering driver’sbehaviours particularities and introducing an independent control system will show roadsafety audit incorporation as the exercise of contemporary legitimacies of state action

Full textEmotion regulation strategies (ERS) are used to modulate emotions and emotional processes in different ways and for different purposes. Some ERS focus on the situation that can trigger emotions while others target the emotions themselves once they have emerged (Gross, 2015). In some circumstances, the difficulty to cope with the situation generates negative emotions which, if not adequately regulate, accentuate the adaptation problem. In clinical perspective, emotional vulnerability is characterized by a high sensitivity to emotional stimuli, an intense response to emotional stimuli and a slow return to emotional baseline. People with high emotional vulnerability have difficulty to keep emotion in optimal zone that can be manageable. These people have a limited access to coping strategies (Linehan et al., 2007). Considering these elements, what role do ERS play in the process of change in relation to the situation and emotions? To explore these questions, we conducted 13 deep case studies in qualitative setting. The participants were 13 men who had consulted a psychotherapist or a social worker at least five times in the past year and signed a confidentiality agreement with the researcher. Inspired by Stake’s (2006) case study method, we had three sharing sessions (two interviews and a writing feedback) with each participant to reconstruct their own process of change retrospectively. The qualitative data were analyzed with MAXQDA-11 and interpreted on the basis of the ERS model of Linehan et al. (2007) and following the method of thematic analysis (Paillé et Mucchielli, 2012). The process of change described by participants indicates a significant improvement in their emotional state and the situation with which they initially struggled to adapt. To explain theses change, the participants believed that psychotherapy helped them to identify maladaptive ERS (rumination, suppression, alcohol, etc.) and progressively replaced these by adaptive ERS (reappraisal, problem-solving, etc.): “I prefer to talk to someone than to ruminate. I prefer to take a time out than to stay inactive” (Francesco). Furthermore, participants said they had learned to make a conscious choice to stop maladaptive ERS and took the risk to use new adaptive ERS (positive expression of emotion, acceptance, meeting their needs, etc.): “When I realized the benefits of evacuating frustration, sadness and negative emotions, I felt wow! I felt good when expressing my emotions, I felt better than when keeping them inside me” (Martial). From the perspective of the participants, psychotherapy helps to reduce emotional vulnerability, which facilitates emotional regulation and adjustment to the situation: “My psychotherapist is part of my team to be able to create strengths, to give me the tools to be able to face different types of individuals in different contexts with better strategies” (Paul). The results of this qualitative study support the idea of Linehan et al. (2007) that psychotherapy, by promoting the adoption of adapted ERS, reduces the emotional vulnerability and promotes adjustment. More specifically, this study shows that the ERS used affect the trajectory of the change process. Thus, the almost exclusive and frequent use of maladaptive ERS corresponds to regression cycles (left wheel) whereas the regular use of adaptive ERS coincides with cycles of progression (right wheel). Moreover, as Linehan (1993) suggests, different interventions would favor the adoption of adapted ERS. The present study agrees in the same direction by associating these interventions with the process of change. Finally, this study explains how ERS facilitates adaptation by acting on both emotions and the situation that generates them. The proposed explanatory model differs from that of Gross (2015) and of Linehan et al. (2007) emphasizing the role of ERS in the process of change as seen by men who have consulted a psychotherapist. However, this model remains to be validated more widely because it was developed from a small number of male participants who perceived a positive role for emotions during their psychotherapeutic process. It would be interesting to interview women or men who believe more or less important the role of emotions in their process of change in order to see their specific way of using the ERS.

Full textSecond dialect acquisition (SDA) may be defined as the process by which a geographically mobile individual adapts their linguistic practices to those in use intheir new environment, without learning a new language per se. Typically, this acquisition occurs at the phonetic level, as reflected in the intuitive idea that people who move away “change their accent”. Scientific accounts of SDA have only recently increased in number, as previous linguistic work has mostly focused on the practices of sedentary speakers. At the same time, pronunciation has long been thought to be settled from adolescence on. SDA is a widespread phenomenon given the increasing geographic mobility of individuals, although its phonetic outcomes are especially heterogeneous. Studies addressing this issue highlight the extensive array of factors that might explain why results vary across individuals and linguistic contexts. Internal factors such as the regularity of the rules that need to be learned, or external like the speakers’ integration to their new environment or concern to remain faithful to their origin, have been put forward. Depending on the theoretical perspective, SDA has been interpreted as an automatism, or as a process mediated by various aspects of the communication situation, the relationship between the speaker and their interlocutor, the frequency and recency of the phonetic properties of ambient speech, etc. This contribution is a sociophonetic study of SDA in Quebec. More precisely, 33 native speakers of Quebec French aged 18 to 22 were recruited upon enrollment in an undergraduate program at Université Laval. Eighteen of them were mobile speakers : they had just moved in Quebec City in order to start university, but were from somewhere else in the province. Born and raised in Quebec City, the 15 remaining participants were sedentary. On recruitment (T1), the speakers were recorded in a sound-attenuated booth while reading target words in isolation or inserted in carrier sentences. These target words featured all of the oral vowels of Quebec French in stressed syllable. The vowels were analyzed acoustically : their duration and the frequency and dynamics of their first three formants (F1, F2 and F3) were measured. The participants also completed questionnaires assessing their social integration, belonging to the socio-psychological phase of emerging adulthood and, for the mobiles only, faithfulness to their origin. The experiment was replicated a year later (T2). Results show that fine-grained acoustic changes occurred over time. The vowels moved closer to each other in the F1/F2plane. Frequency of F3 and formant dynamics decreased in some vowels. A reduction of the articulatory movements thus seems to have occurred. However, these changes took viplace in all speakers, whether they be mobile or sedentary. Neither of the other external factors taken into account (integration, emerging adulthood, faithfulness) could explain the changes. Therefore, we hypothesized that the way the participants perceived the experiment had evolved over time. As for the lack of more substantial phonetic shifts in mobile speakers, it could be explained by the short time span between the two experiments, since the first changes taking place during SDA do not usually happen at the phonetic level. Another possibility is that there are not enough dialectal features in Quebec City for the mobile speakers to change systematically, whereas, furthermore, the local population might not even be the main linguistic influence of university students. The mobile participants nonetheless proved aware of differences between their own speech and that of their new environment, suggesting that enhanced linguistic sensitivity may play a role in phonetic change. Further progress in understanding the link between speech perception and production mayalsoshed light on the mechanisms underlying the first stages of SDA. Our results add to those from a growing body of studies evidencing that a certain phonetic flexibility is maintained throughout adulthood.

The most important environmental challenges, particularly climate change, are much more social than technical, because it is mainly our way of life that is at the heart of the question. Can we make the necessary changes? What are the main difficulties to overcome? How should governments act? To help answer these questions, we chose to interview twelve former ministers responsible for environmental issues in order to understand the reasons for their actions, as well as the representations that underlie them. In both France and Quebec, a minister must take into account the perceptions and representations of citizens and those of the various groups with which he or she is in contact (lobby groups, media, local elected representatives, etc.), as well as the objectives of the government and those of his or her political party. The room for maneuver is narrow, which explains in large part why the ministers we interviewed all acted a little in the same way. They have all tried to do their best to protect the environment and the welfare of their fellow citizens, but without significantly affecting their way of life or the established order, while being generally aware that the challenges ahead will very soon require much more difficult decisions. Political sociology explains that political decisions in our democratic societies are collective constructions of actors in interaction, and thus confirms the results of our analysis. The political actions of former ministers can also be interpreted in the light of the three logics of action described by François Dubet. Moreover, from an interactionist point of view, where the meaning of objects is created by interaction, action is difficult when this meaning is not the same for different actors; this is what we have observed for long-term environmental issues that are perceived very differently by citizens and ministers.

Full textThis thesis focuses on the wood processing industry in Quebec. Since several years, the sector faces many problems that hinder its competitiveness. The main research question is: Does the introduction of products of secondary and tertiary processing, as well as the diversification of markets including uncovered domestic segments as non-residential construction, could provide solutions to get industry's current crisis? Indeed, for several decades, firms in this sector export basic wood products and depend heavily on the single market of the United States. Today, stakeholders are increasingly convinced that this crisis is basically due to low investment in the modernization of the industry and the high dependence on one market. This challenges them to join their efforts to revitalize the industry by promoting the development of new products. This could open new external and internal markets. Since collaboration is a key success factor in the development of products; the first sub-question is to identify what are the key strategies for effective collaboration management with all stakeholders to design new value added products. Based on the results of interviews with business leaders in the industry of the second and third wood processing, a model incorporating eleven key strategies for effective collaboration management is proposed. The second sub-question concerns the impact of the organization’s specific characteristics in choosing the destination market. Based on a sample of 1,022 manufacturing firms in the province of Quebec, the analysis by the binary logistic regression’s method demonstrates that the industry, the total sales and the presence or absence of a website have an impact on the diversification of export markets. While the firm age, the firm location and the presence of an export manager are not significant. Finally, the third sub-question concerns the determinants of the acceptance and use of wood technology as a new practice in non-residential construction industry in Quebec. To answer this question, a web survey was addressed to twenty eight engineers on construction. Results reveal some constraints on the use of wood in non-residential construction industry in Quebec. Keywords: collaboration management, export diversification, acceptance and use of new technology.

Full textSince the creation of a welfare state at the end of World War II, going through the rationalization trends of the 80's and more recently the emergence of technological innovation and new forms of knowledge production and dissemination, the university has been at the center of numerous debates concerning its mission and its role within society. In response to these discussions and questions reflecting the social and economic environment in which this institution operates, the university was led to introduce changes in the forms of knowledge production as well as the status and role of its main internal (administrators, academics, students) and external (governments, companies) stakeholders in the process of these changes. The goal for the university is to put itself in a leading position in societies in which economic performance is increasingly dependent on knowledge and education. However, little research has focused on reporting, through an integrated approach based on macro, meso and micro levels of analysis, the main mutations that have marked and mark even more the university nowadays. Trying to remedy this weakness, this thesis aims to deal with the main transformations the institution has experienced, on a triple plan that integrates the context, content and process of change. The first article of this thesis aims to determine whether the university as a pluralist organization is able to evolve towards a post-bureaucratic configuration. By a discourse analysis of four meta-actors of three key moments of change that marked the Québec university, this article wishes to highlight that the university has evolved by sedimentation in its configuration, based on a fragile consensus on a difficult cohabitation between social democratic values versus rationalization ones. In this context, the evolution towards a postbureaucratic configuration would require actions in response to this strategic ambiguity, particularly those initiated by teachers and administrators. It would also require as well a new actor that is the industry, without however challenging the already existing consensus. The second article of this thesis attempts to account for the way in which academic identity is defined in reaction to a neo-liberal orientation of the university. Based on a meta-synthesis of 19 qualitative and empirical articles that investigated the impacts of New Public Management and managerialism on the identity of the members of the academic staff of universities, this article tries to highlight how these individuals define / redefine their identity V in light of institutional work and the type of agency mobilized by these actors. Academics then would particularly benefit from developing a projective agency and diversifying their places of support in order to make their managerial identity experience less difficult. Finally, the third chapter of this thesis seeks to make an inventory of the forms of student engagement in the face of the growing emergence of a movement. Based on a general inductive analysis, this chapter attempts to understand better the individual experience of student engagement. Thus, it seeks to give an account of the way in which the individual student representative engages and acts within his engagement in a context of emergent change. Student representatives do not seem to meet in their engagement, as evidenced by the grassroots leadership activities that are mobilized by these individuals in response to the emergence of change.

Full textThe marketing of the pork to be slaughtered in Quebec is done within the framework of a collective marketing. In 2009, the electronic auction, a virtual channel of sale managed by an office of pork producers, was abolished. For the first time in the history of the collective marketing in this industry, one introduced the possibility of direct relationships between purchasers and producers. The literature of the supply chain management and the transaction costs economics suggest such relations imply a closer and more competitive vertical coordination. Importance to take into account the institutional framing which offers the collective marketing is also shown. The nature of these changes was analyzed in order to characterize this new way of coordinating the transactions. The impacts of this change in vertical coordination on the performance were located by mobilizing a multicriterion grid of analysis. The analysis thus revealed a closer coordination, modifying the mode of adaptation to the unforeseen, the rules of the game and their sources, the control and the incentives of actors implied in the transactions. Product quality, the flexibility of the relation between producer and purchaser, the balance of the chains in the sector as well as the nature and the level of transaction costs are the main impacts identified as regards performance of vertical coordination. A still appreciable but changing role of marketing board in the framing of these transactions was also reported by the participants met.

Full textTypical hydrological models do not impose energy conservation at the surface. Therefore, under higher temperatures they may overestimate evapotranspiration. Physical land surface model CLASS is paired to Muskingum based routing model RAPID in order to create a functional hydrological model under global warming context. CLASS-RAPID is set up on the Haut-Montmorency watershed (47.4°N, 71.1°W). The model is calibrated and validated with the ERA5 reanalysis and the flowrates observations from the Direction d’expertise hydrique du Québec. Climate projections from CanESM2, CNR-CM5, GFDL-ESM2M and MPI-ESM and climate scenarios RCP 4.5 and RCP 8.5 are given as entries to CLASS-RAPID in order to simulate flowrates for 2041 to 2070. Climate projections from the same models and for the benchmark period of 1981 to 2005 are used by CLASS-RAPID in order to obtain hydrological simulations that can be compared to the flowrates of 2041 to 2070. CLASS-RAPID has a Nash-Sutcliffe coefficient of NSE = 0, 66. The model tends to replicate hydrological events sequence correctly but underestimate flood peaks. CLASS-RAPID simulations under climate changes conditions foresee that spring floods will tend to happen sooner in the years for 2041 to 2070 when compared to the benchmark period. For the four climate models, climate changes simulations foresee reductions of summer flowrates of 40% for climate scenario RCP 4.5 and of 50% for climate scenario RCP 8.5. For the same climate scenarios, the Atlas hydroclimatique du Québec foresees a reduction of the flowrates of respectively 37% and 45%.

Full textThe results of the correlation analysis revealed a positive relationship between public spending and volunteer rates. In addition, a positive correlation was found to exist between levels of coordination activity and rates of volunteerism, lending strength to the contention that organizational infrastructure is related to volunteer rates. In general, the results highlight the integral role of public monies to the sustainability of Quebec's voluntary sector.

Full textMethod. This study consists of two methods: a document review of relevant policies and reforms of Quebec's health and social services. Secondly, qualitative interview methods were used to explore the experiences of seven managers within a CSSS and their attitudes towards the reform.
Results. Managers described the following: a new window of opportunity, importance of leadership in the reform process, distorted communication, environment of trust, and culture of the organisation.
Conclusion. Quebec's health and social services is an ongoing discourse. Distorted communication creates an atmosphere of uncertainty which hinders the reform process. Implications include the need for further research in understanding healthcare professionals and other actors in the reform process.

Full textThis master’s thesis focuses on the discourses and practices by which the Magdalen Islands fishermen and farmers address the issue of climate change. These Madelinots contend daily with climate-related factors in their activities based upon environment exploitation. Guided by the approaches of environmental history and political ecology, this master’s thesis examines the scope of human actions on the nature, the significations given to nature and their resulting socio-environmental repercussions. Likewise, this study aims to better understand the place of climate change in local discourses about the economic livelihoods of fishermen and farmers, the environmental degradations and the energy future of the archipelago. It also demonstrates the social construction of climate change and discerns its social, political and economic components.

Full textUsing Urie Bronfenbrenner's Ecological Model of Human Development, this thesis also explores the environmental factors contributing to a rise in deviant behavior in segments of the Montreal ultra-Orthodox community. From an analysis of data obtained from numerous interviews with community members as well as with mental health professionals familiar with this group, four contributing factors to the rise of deviant behavior among adolescent boys are identified. These factors test current haredi methods of maintaining strong cultural boundaries and may suggest that changes are necessary to cope with current challenges. The lure of mainstream culture is a strong draw for adolescents and advances in technology allow these individuals to easily engage in secret deviant behavior while remaining in good standing within the community. Moreover, the rigid structure of the school day with its long hours and intensive curriculum makes it difficult to accommodate the needs of all students. Changes in family structure, dynamics, and composition, as well as an increasingly stringent interpretation of religious law have also contributed to a rise in deviance. Finally, community financial weakness is explored as it relates to adolescence and a loss of religious identity.

Full textIfugao province, in the Philippine Cordilleras, is an arena where symbolic confrontations clearly appear in rice-farming. Social interactions that were centered around the rice production and consumption are shifting towards another carrier of value: money. This thesis explores this shift, putting forward an ethnography of social change that gives room to individual initiatives and debates, and take into account the everyday actions of the members of Ifugao society, who are everything but passive viewers of world mutations. This book seeks to understand what it describes as the uncertainty of actors about what their society is and about how it may reproduce in a context of rapidly changing social norms. The inquiry about norms, and the way they are performed or reshaped, is tightly connected to an empirical fieldwork. It focuses primarily on the topic of exchange values; the local Ifugao rice varieties (tinawon) are dedicated to interpersonal exchanges, fostering a cycle of social debts and reciprocity that cement the bonds between persons. This crucial role of Tinawon, however, is contested by money, a pure exchange value. The analysis does not consider money as destructive and anti-cultural, but rather as deeply socialized and flooded with lasting representations that used to be attached to rice. This migration of value, a symptom of norm uncertainty, reveals the architecture of social change in Ifugao. These dynamics, however, can be understood only by taking their political dimension into account, in a period extending beyond the limits of the contemporaneous. Thus, the central part of the thesis is dedicated to a historical study, built on archives, looking at the genesis of Philippine nationalism. It sets a comparison between the narrative the latter has created, and the history of the inclusion of the Cordilleras within a political archipelago born from colonial drives. Such an approach aims at avoiding the localist trap of considering Ifugao province as an isolated “here and now”. One must be equally thorough in investigating multi-scaled phenomena when considering the power relationships in present day Ifugao. The concept of scales lay at the core of the third part of this book, in which the analysis attempts to demonstrate how strongly the everyday construction of governance is linked to transversal events that imply diverse geographical and ideological spaces, from municipalities to international networks of Philippine immigration

Full textThis qualitative study aims to extend the knowledge about social work in third line (i.e., hospital-based and specialized) psychiatric services. The outlook of social workers is central in our study as we asked these professionals about the meaning of their duties at work. Interviews were conducted with mental health social workers from the Mental Health Institute of Quebec City. From April to June 2015, 10 social workers were interviewed. They answered a semi-structured questionnaire divided in two sections: (1) social work practice in third line psychiatry; and (2) a practice narrative centered on an actual clinical example. Thematic content analysis based on a codification table with predetermined and emerging categories was conducted. Results and discussion: The central theme of our analysis pertains to the notion of linking, which is viewed as central to social work practices: ties created, preserved, or re-established by social workers, and involving users, families, other practitioners, and other various partners. Social workers enact various roles in third line psychiatric settings. Significantly, the way their role is understood in interdisciplinary teams influences the continuity of the collaboration itself, as well as the achievement of the goals established with clients. The case-centered practice narratives underline that clinical management in third line psychiatric settings need interventions from different collaborators and demand the use of new intervention approaches. Constructive and effective collaborations along with the addition of families in complex interventions provide great support in the realization of the users’ intervention plan or discharge plan. For social workers, the diverse forms of clinical supports, training accessibility and work flexibility facilitate their tasks. Keywords: social work, hospital practice, mental health, psychiatry.

Full textDropping out of school can seriously affect employment possibilities and social integration. There are tools to investigate and measure the level of risk of dropping out. Academic performances and behaviour problems are well documented risk factors. Impulsivity and risk taking can lead to problematic behaviour. Certain studies have looked into the impact of stress on the dropping out process, but its impact on academic performances, impulsivity and risk taking has never been evaluated directly with the risk level of dropping out. Objective and hypothesis : The objective of this study is to evaluate the impact of stress on academic performances, impulsivity and risk taking and to measure the relation of this impact with the risk level of dropping out of school. The hypothesis is that higher the risk level, higher the negative impact stress will have on our measures of academic performance, impulsivity and risk taking. Method : 37 young adults between 15 and 20 years old with no diploma took part in the study. After measuring the risk level of dropping out, a full characterization was made followed by academic performance, impulsivity and risk taking tasks before and after a social stress condition, the Trier Social Stress Test (TSST). Results : Our salivary cortisol samples show that the TSST did not produce a significant change in levels of stress to adequately test our hypothesis. Our results show a significant interaction between impulsivity and the risk level of dropping out. Furthermore, the relation between risk taking and impulsivity in our results is interesting Conclusion : The objective of this project could not be adequately tested since the stress condition didn't produce a significant stress reaction, as measured by salivary cortisol. The level of risk of dropping out was significantly correlated with impulsivity, but not risk taking, nor academic performances.

Full textThe Canadian forest sector has gone through major transformations in the last decades. As a result, new practices have emerged among which public participation (PP) processes are particularly important. These are today a given in the sector, at every decisional level and for all actors. The growing importance of PP is said to reflect a major governance change in the management of forests. It is also seen as a practice which has many benefits: PP processes would improve the quality of decisions, ensure that a diversity of social values is considered, and increase trust in public authorities, for example. Despite the growing interest in PP, many knowledge gaps remain. To what point do PP processes reflect a governance change? What are their “real” impacts? Do they allow for the integration of a diversity of participants, as usually postulated? Our research aims to answer these questions based on the example of Québec forest sector. Firstly, based on an analysis of 693 cases of PP which happened over a period of more than three decades, the study provides with a high-level portrait of the evolution of PP processes in Québec forest sector. While the results prevent us from concluding that a real governance shift has happened, they clearly indicate that PP practices contribute to some key modifications in the conduct of forest management. Secondly, based on the perspective of 137 individuals having been involved in forest-related PP processes, the study identifies ten types of potential impacts of PP mechanisms as well as their significance from the point of view of the respondents. It also reveals key challenges related to the achievement of these impacts. Finally, one of the impacts of PP is measured empirically. To that end, the lists of participants to 27 public hearings were analyzed. The results reveal that, while PP opens decision-making to a wider range of participants, some forest actors tend to be favoured to the detriment of others. Overall, the key considerations raised by the study’s results allow important recommendations with regards to future PP practices and studies.
