Full textThis thesis contributes to the literature on the resource curse at the subnational level, focusing on mining in Latin America within the context of climate change. It examines how mining influences sustainable development and explores public attitudes toward sustainable development in the face of competing priorities. The first chapter analyzes the impact of energy transition metal (ETM) mining on the quality of institutions in Latin America. A novel institutional quality index dataset at the subnational level is constructed. Using a synthetic difference-in-differences approach, with the treatment group consisting of regions where ETM mining begins, the findings indicate that mining reduces the quality of local institutions, particularly in terms of perceived government effectiveness. This decline in institutional quality may potentially compromise long-term development, given the key role of strong institutions. Chapter 2 investigates the contribution of the mining sector to sustainable development in Mexican municipalities. Employing a staggered difference-in-differences design, with municipalities where mining operations occur as the treatment group, the results suggest that mining does not significantly affect economic inequality or education and has a limited impact on household income but does lead to environmental degradation. These findings highlight potential negative trade-offs for mining communities. Lastly, Chapter 3 examines voter attitudes toward investments aimed at sustainable development in Colombia. The analysis reveals that when confronted with competing concerns, voters prioritize security and visible infrastructure over sustainability-focused investments. However, municipalities with lower security concerns or higher levels of education exhibit more diverse priorities, suggesting that context significantly influences voter preferences

Full textFor several decades, beekeepers worldwide have experienced significant losses of honey bee (Apis mellifera L) colonies, yet there are knowledge gaps in developing countries. In the context of global changes, understanding the factors driving these potential losses is essential for adapting beekeeping practices and ensuring the sustainability of this activity. Stingless bees (tribe Meliponini) are also reared for honey production (meliponiculture) in tropical regions. To date, it is unclear whether meliponiculturists face similar challenges in maintaining their colonies, and the factors influencing colony losses remain poorly understood. This thesis aims to investigate the variability in managed bee colony losses (honey bees and stingless bees) in relation to climatic and landscape gradients, as well as beekeeping and meliponiculture practices. To achieve this, we conducted participatory surveys with beekeepers and meliponiculturists in Latin America and sub-Saharan Africa to monitor managed bee colony losses. We estimated significant annual and seasonal loss rates (around 30 %), highlighting the challenges faced by beekeepers and meliponiculturists in maintaining their colonies in these regions. We observed climatic effects on these losses, particularly an increase in honey bee colony losses with temperature in both regions. Additionally, we found that stingless bee colony losses decrease with temperature in Latin America, while they increase with temperature in sub-Saharan Africa (Kenya). Furthermore, we observed a landscape effect, with stingless bee colony losses decreasing as forest cover surrounding meliponaries increased in Latin America. Finally, we detected interactions between climate and beekeeping management practices on honey bee colony losses in both regions. Beekeeping practices may serve as a lever to reduce losses caused by climatic pressures, but management recommendations must consider the climate. For example, in sub-Saharan Africa (Kenya), providing water supplementation during the hot and dry season reduces honey bee colony losses. Our findings contribute to closing the knowledge gaps on managed bee colony loss rates in developing countries, while confirming the influence of climatic and landscape factors, which are likely to intensify with climate change. These results also provide research perspectives for exploring the underlying mechanisms of climatic and landscape impacts on colony losses

Full textThe subtropical latitudes of South America have been experiencing a major hydroclimatic change since the early 1970’s that has had a major societal impact affecting the local economy of one of the most densely populated regions. This change resulted in an abrupt increase in lake levels including Laguna Mar Chiquita, a lake which now covers 6000 km2, while the sedimentary records over the last millennium show a long drying trend. In order to gain a better understanding of the relation between lake level fluctuations and the climate variability in this region, this work aims to simulate the hydrological behaviour of Laguna Mar Chiquita and the relationship with its catchment. The implementation of the lake water balance indicates that lake fluctuations at the beginning of the 1970’s were in direct response to increased runoff in its northern sub-basin, suggesting a tropical climate influence. The coupling of the lake water balance with a hydrological watershed model has led to simulate lake level variations in relation with the climate of the northern sub-basin, highlighting the minor human impact in the recent hydroclimatic transition. For the first time, an integrated basin-lake model in link to global climate is presented combining the results of hydrological basin-lake modelling with the outputs of the climate LMDZ model through a statistical downscaling approach. This novel approach allows to explore the ability of global climate models to accurately represent the regional climate. In addition, it confirms the tropical influence on forcing of recent hydrological variabilities in this region of South America

Full textThis thesis is a contribution to the empirical analysis of monetary dynamics in Latin America. The main two fields of application of the thesis are monetary economics and macroeconometrics. The thesis is composed of four chapters. In the first one, I analyze long-run dynamics of the demand for money in Argentina between 1900 and 2006. The inclusion of structural breaks, estimated through a sequential procedure, allowed me to estimate stable long-run equations and to fit actual short-run variations of the monetary aggregate. In the second chapter, I analyze the welfare cost of inflation in Brazil between 1960 and 2009. I estimate long-run relationships, also including structural breaks, and I use the estimated elasticity for the interest rate and the deterministic structure of the model to compute the theoretical cost of Brazilian monetary policy during the past 50 years. In the third chapter, I analyze the performance of a group of residual-based test of cointegration with multiple deterministic structural breaks. Results show the existence of a trade-off between size and power of these tests in presence of multiple breaks. In the fourth chapter, I analyze the reaction functions of four Latin American Central Banks (Brazil, Chile, Colombia and Mexico). The empirical analysis focuses on the econometric modeling of the Taylor rule under a non-linear cointegration framework, where the non-linearity takes the form of an exponential STAR model (ÉSTAR). Results show the existence of non-linear reaction functions for three out of four Central Banks, where the non-linearity depends on inflation and exchange rate dynamics

Full textSoutheastern South America (SESA) is one of the few subtropical regions where WCRP/CMIP3 coupled general circulation models project significant summer rainfall increases by the end of the twenty first century, in a global warming scenario. This signal is revealed to be associated with a frequency increase of positive phase of the leading pattern of austral summer rainfall variability in the region. The positive phase manifests as austral summer rainfall above (below) normal in the SESA (South Atlantic convergence zone) region. Moreover, the rainfall pattern change is shown to be associated with positive anomalies of the sea surface temperature (SST) in the equatorial Pacific. This result is confirmed by numerical sensitivity experiments performed with the LMDZ4 " two-way nesting " interactive climate models system, which also showed that the projected rainfall increase in SESA is mainly associated to the zonally asymmetric pattern of the tropical SST warming
