Aydogdu, Ozlem. "Changes In The Meaning Of Type In Architecture Since Eighteenth Century." Master's thesis, METU, 2006. http://etd.lib.metu.edu.tr/upload/12607330/index.pdf.

Full text
Abstract:
The need to define notions in one and a concrete way is actually a tendency to remove the contradictions that could blur their meanings. However, in the architectural discourse the different definitions and interpretations of a notion lead sometimes to an interesting and productive paradox through which a dual situation can emerge. The notion of type as one of these instances gained such a duality in time throughout the accumulated thoughts that were studied in different times and conditions since the eighteenth century by scholars like Marc-Antoine Laugier, Quatrem&eacute<br>re de Quincy, Jean-Nicolas-Louis Durand, Le Courbusier, Giulio Carlo Argan, Aldo Rossi, and Peter Eisenman. These conditions which occurred between the relations type-nature, type-machine and type-city have a common point in that type was seen as a principle, to explain the architectural attitude in a particular period. And in these periodical conditions it can be said that type has, actually, a visual (in Leandro Madrazo&amp<br>#8217<br>s terms) and non-visual (in Leandro Madrazo&amp<br>#8217<br>s terms) aspect which leads to a discrepant problem in that it is sometimes defined as sensible in the sense of a physical construction and sometimes defined as conceptual in the sense of a conceptual construct. Therefore, in using the outline of Anthony Vidler&amp<br>#8217<br>s essay the third typology as a loose framework in the context of a historical point of view from the eighteenth century to the twentieth century, the main problem of this thesis will be to expose this dual situation between the visual (sensible) and non-visual (conceptual) aspects of type. In addition, it is actually said that the visual aspect of type appeared in the sense how its non-visual aspect is re-constructed. Moreover, within its double-nature (in Leandro Madrazo&amp<br>#8217<br>s terms) type seems to have a potential and power for its transformation towards a key for reading the architectural process in a re-constructed continuity. And because of this re-construction it is possible to follow the continuity of architectural knowledge, which designates the changing boundaries of the architectural discipline and gives the means for a tendency to define it as autonomous.

Chusid, Hanna S. "The meaning of career change in relation to family roles." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 1987. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/27660.

Full text
Abstract:
An intensive case study design was utilized, integrating data from the application of Q-technique and subject interviews, to examine the meaning of career change from a family perspective. Ten subjects, identified through an informal network of referrals, were selected as diverse examples of career changers (6 men, 4 women). Subjects Q-sorted 46 items drawn from Holland's (1966) typology of personalities for 19 to 23 Salient Role Figures identified from three domains of dramatic enactment: Family, Self, and Vocation. Q-sort results for each subject were developed into a correlation matrix, then submitted to a principal components analysis. Results were analyzed to identify shifts or maintenance of themes and role enactments as indications of lived-out dramas. The empirical findings and suggested themes were presented to each subject to stimulate subject elaboration. Quantitative and qualitative data were synthesized to develop portraits pointing to the meaning of career change for each subject. Results support previous research that suggests individuals displace role enactments from family-of-origin onto the vocational arena. This study also provides support for the thesis that the phenomenon of role displacement from the family to vocational arenas occurs across differing vocational contexts. Additionally, while the meaning of career change as reflected in patterns of dramatic enactment appears idiosyncratic, the shifts in role displacement from family-of-origin to vocational arena appear to virtually define the subject's sense of the meaning of the career change itself. Thus, when viewed in the context of the individual's life as it is lived out, there appears to be regularity in the meaning of career change.<br>Education, Faculty of<br>Educational and Counselling Psychology, and Special Education (ECPS), Department of<br>Graduate

Abstract:
A lot of researchers and managers have been trying to find the factors that affect the success of organizational change processes. One of the most mentioned factors in literature about this theme is the resistance to change on the part of some organizational actors, in special the ones belonging to the lower hierarchical levels. How these individuals realize themselves and the other in organizational change processes? How they realize the content and management of the change? What is the role of communication in a change context? This work aims to contribute to the comprehension of the communication role in the meaning construction for individuals and groups in planned organizational changes, as well as to understand its relationship with behavior aspects presented for them. For this purpose, it was conducted a longitudinal case study in a public federal organization that is performing an organizational change in the Technology of Information area: implantation of an electronic management system of documents and workflow. The research methodology was based on methods triangulation that comprehended the analysis of official organizational documents, application of questionnaires and semi-structured interviews to the employers in two different moments, and researcher participant observation by means of Action Research (THIOLLENT, 1997 and 2005) due to the high level of relationship between the researcher and the change project. The results showed that the organizational change is sensible to relational and temporal aspects and that human action and behavior in organizations should be thought as the results of communication as determinant to the meaning construction and social identity. The results also present some questionings about the conflicts experienced by middle managers in a change context and point to the necessity of realizing the fact that middle managers are change agents but they are also human beings.

Ashter, Suzanne. "Weight changes : the meaning of food and eating behaviours amongst women in recovery from substance addiction." Thesis, London Metropolitan University, 2014. http://repository.londonmet.ac.uk/713/.

Full text
Abstract:
During the period of recovery from drug and alcohol misuse the individual starts to move gradually away from former habits and patterns of thinking whilst learning new skills, however returning to a normal diet can be challenging for many recovering substance misusers. Studies involving substance misuse have mainly focused on weight changes and eating behaviours during active substance addiction, whilst research on how substance misusers experience weight changes and how they describe the functions and meaning of food and eating behaviours in recovery from substance addiction is scarce. This is a qualitative study using a constructivist grounded theory approach which aimed to explicate the experiences of food, eating and weight changes from eight women in different stages of recovery (ranging from early, mid and late recovery) from drug and alcohol addiction. The areas identified from ‘the meaning of food’ included: substituting alcohol with food, structure and social benefits. The areas identified from ‘weight changes’ included: weight gain and weight loss, and the areas identified from ‘eating behaviours’ included: distorted eating and dieting. The findings lead to an emerging theory that indicated: ‘Food during recovery involved providing structure to the day, enjoyment of social eating and substituting alcohol with food, particularly sugar rich foods during early recovery to 1. Replace the substances by filling a void, 2. Satisfy the cravings and urges experienced from the substances and 3. Experience a change in mood. The excessive intake of sugar rich food caused weight gain and in turn resulted in dieting and distorted eating behaviours later in recovery’. The theory that emerged from this research should prove useful to substance misuse facilities in order to enhance and incorporate nutrition education into treatment programmes to address food, eating and weight issues faced by women in recovery from substance addiction.

Lawrence, Daniel. "Sound change and social meaning : the perception and production of phonetic change in York, Northern England." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/31327.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis investigates the relationship between social meaning and linguistic change. An important observation regarding spoken languages is that they are constantly changing: the way we speak differs from generation to generation. A second important observation is that spoken utterances convey social as well as denotational meaning: the way we speak communicates something about who we are. How, if at all, are these two characteristics of spoken languages related? Many sociolinguistic studies have argued that the social meaning of linguistic features is central to explaining the spread of linguistic innovations. A novel form might be heard as more prestigious than the older form, or it may become associated with specific social stereotypes relevant to the community in which the change occurs. It is argued that this association between a linguistic variant and social meaning leads speakers to adopt or reject the innovation, inhibiting or facilitating the spread of the change. In contrast, a number of scholars have argued that social meaning is epiphenomenal to many linguistic changes, which are instead driven by an automatic process of convergence in face-to-face interaction. The issue that such arguments raise is that many studies proposing a role of social meaning in the spread of linguistic innovations rely on production data as their primary source of evidence. Observing the variable adoption of innovations across different groups of speakers (e.g. by gender, ethnicity, or socioeconomic status), a researcher might draw on their knowledge of the social history of the community under study to infer the role of social meaning in that change. In many cases, the observed patterns of could equally be explained by the social structure of the community under study, which constrains who speaks to whom. Are linguistic changes facilitated and inhibited by social meaning? Or is it rather the case that social meaning arises as a consequence of linguistic change, without necessarily influencing the change itself? This thesis explores these questions through a study of vocalic change in York, Northern England, focusing on the fronting and diphthongization of the tense back vowels /u/ and /o/. It presents a systematic comparison of the social meanings listeners assign to innovations (captured using perceptual methods), their social attitudes with regard to those meanings (captured through sociolinguistic interviews), and their use of those forms in production (captured through acoustic analysis). It is argued that evidence of a consistent relationship between these factors would support the proposal that social meaning plays a role in linguistic change. The results of this combined analysis of sociolinguistic perception, social attitudes and speech production provide clear evidence of diachronic /u/ and /o/ fronting in this community, and show that variation in these two vowels is associated with a range of social meanings in perception. These meanings are underpinned by the notion of 'Broad Yorkshire' speech, a socially-recognized speech register linked to notions of authentic local identity and social class. Monophthongal /o/, diphthongal /u/, and back variants of both vowels are shown to be associated with this register, implying that a speaker who adopts an innovative form will likely be heard as less 'Broad'. However, there is no clear evidence that speakers' attitudes toward regional identity or social class have any influence on their adoption of innovations, nor that that their ability to recognise the social meaning of fronting in perception is related to their production behaviour. The fronting of /u/ is spreading in a socially-uniform manner in production, unaffected by any social factor tested except for age. The fronting of /o/ is conditioned by social network structure - speakers with more diverse social networks are more likely to adopt the innovative form, while speakers with closer social ties to York are more likely to retain a back variant. These findings demonstrate that York speakers hear back forms of /u/ and /o/ as more 'local' and 'working class' than fronter realizations, and express strong attitudes toward the values and practices associated with regional identity and social class. However, these factors do not appear to influence their adoption of linguistic innovations in any straightforward manner, contrasting the predictions of an account of linguistic change where social meaning plays a central role in facilitating or inhibiting the propagation of linguistic innovations. Based on these results, the thesis argues that many linguistic changes may spread through the production patterns of a speech community without the direct influence of social meaning, and advocates for the combined analysis of sociolinguistic perception, social attitudes and speech production in future work.

Grubert, A. (Anna). "“Eh, you stay awesome, cuz you stay God!”:the changes in meaning and register in English-based Hawai’i Creole and Tok Pisin loanwords." Master's thesis, University of Oulu, 2014. http://urn.fi/URN:NBN:fi:oulu-201409041826.

Abstract:
This thesis looks at the English-lexifier loanwords in two creole languages spoken on the islands of the Pacific Ocean, Hawai’i Creole English and Tok Pisin. It is estimated that about 75 % of vocabulary in Hawai’i Creole and some 80 % of Tok Pisin vocabulary is English-based. The aim is to find out how these English-based loanwords have changed in meaning and register when borrowed to these creole languages. Studying the English-based vocabulary of Hawaiian Creole and Tok Pisin and specifically the shift in meaning and register is important because no such study exists yet. This thesis will offer some new insight into the change in the register of loanwords and give some grounds for further research. The data is comprised of excerpts from the Hawaiian Creole and Tok Pisin translations of the New Testament and the study looks at contemporary literary language use. Selected loanwords and expressions are analysed in regard to the changes in meaning or register. Analysis of grammatical properties carried by the loanwords is provided as well. Based on the analysis it is suggested that most of the changes in the usage or meaning of the words can be attributed to two sources: either the variant of English where the lexical item was borrowed from or the substratum influence from indigenous languages or other English-lexifier contact languages. My research provides a fairly reliable picture of contemporary literary language use in formal register. I expect the findings would have been similar in any written works published recently. The analysis presented here is a small but representative sample of the vast amount of changes in English-based Hawai’i Creole and Tok Pisin vocabulary<br>Tämä tutkimuksen tarkoituksena on tarkastella englantiperäistä lainasanastoa sekä sen merkityksen ja rekisterin muutosta kahdessa Tyynenmeren saarilla puhutussa kreolikielessä, Havaijin kreolissa sekä tok pisinissä.

Abstract:
NASCAR has become one of America's fastest growing spectator sports, and corporate sponsors have played an important part in this upsurge in popularity. Race teams, drivers, and sanctioning bodies use the income that sponsors provide to operate at NASCAR events. This study provides an analysis of how corporate sponsorships have changed the way that NASCAR is presented in print journalism. Using Burke's method of indexing, NASCAR-related titles in the New York Times and the Johnson City Press from 1950 to present day are analyzed. The analysis reveals not only a steady increase in the number of NASCAR-related titles, but 4 indices of meaning that are most often used (Specific Races/Locations, NASCAR, Specific Names, and Sponsors) and that organizations should consider before they plan to promote their products using NASCAR.

Abstract:
The current study analyses the impact of the subjective development of six Assistant of Child Development, who underwent a teacher preparation programme, named Programa ADI-Magistério, promoted by the Municipal Secretary of Education of the City of Sao Paulo, which enrolled around 3700 professionals working in the Child Education Centers of its educational system. Starting from a hypothesis that the teacher´s way of being and thinking plays an active role in the teaching-learning interface, the objective of this study is to analyze the subjective developmental changes that appear in the subjects\' narratives and to evaluate the favorable and unfavorable circumstances for these changes, based on Vygotsky, Bruner, Leme, Grandesso, and the theoretical-methodological perspective elaborated by Rossetti-Ferreira and allii. and called Network of Meanings. In their interwiews, the subjects were stimulated to reflect about some contexts of their development as their life history, their social relationships and experiences, the principles and methods of the Teaching Preparation Program, and their appreciation of the new social role which they were formally assuming: to be a teacher. From the configuration of this network, the narratives elaborated by the interviewed persons have pointed out changes in their self-image, enlargement in their world vision, changes in their professional practice, and the modification in their concept of early childhood education. A final analysis discussed the mediation of the Teaching Preparation Program in the process of subjective development of each ADI student. In future, this study can contribute for planning other formation processes, and can be used as a support in the formulation of new formative curricula, besides enhancing the social vision of the graduation courses.

Hughes, Patrick Brian. "The relations between the productions of broadcasting organisations, the social experiences of audiences and the meaning attached to programmes, with particular reference to recent institutional and technical changes in mass communications." Thesis, London School of Economics and Political Science (University of London), 1993. http://etheses.lse.ac.uk/1231/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis argues that by the late 1980s, investigations of relationships between the audiences and programmes of broadcasting had been flawed by one or more of the following weaknesses: a focus of inquiry which expressed an unresolved dualism between atomistic and deterministic models of society; assumptions about the relationships between knowledge and its circumstances of production which expressed an unresolved dualism between materialism and idealism; and a disregard for the particular significance of socio-historically-specific cultural forms and institutions. Consequently, it argues that for an investigation of audience-programme relationships to be judged satisfactory, it must meet these three aims: 1. Pose a clear, non-atomistic model of society and thus resolve the individual-society dualism into a new, historically-specific focus of inquiry; 2. Resolve the materialism-idealism dualism into a new model of knowledge-production; 3. Explain the roles of particular cultural forms and of particular cultural and ideological institutions in social change, especially their roles in the commodification of culture. The arguments are based on an examination of pre-1980 broadcasting research projects within the "Media and the Individual" and "Media and Society" traditions, which showed that none had satisfactorily related programmes, audiences' understandings of them and audiences' social-material circumstances. Some influential theories of culture and of ideology were also examined for a means of relating those three elements, but without success. The thesis includes a report on the author's 1981 research into audience-programme relationships, highlighting the practical and conceptual difficulties of meeting those three aims, and the final chapter argues that major 1980s broadcasting research projects also failed to meet the three aims. The thesis concludes by drawing on the lessons of the projects examined to outline a new programme of research explicitly oriented to those three aims, addressing broadcasting as a particular relationship between consciousness and circumstances.

Thesis: Ph. D. in Philosophy, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Department of Linguistics and Philosophy, September, 2020<br>Cataloged from student-submitted PDF version of thesis.<br>Includes bibliographical references.<br>Semantic change is of interest in its own right in the philosophy of language. For instance, it sheds light on the relationship between the meaning of a word and its use. It also plays a role in ideology critique. Philosophy of language often focuses on explaining synchronic features related to truth, entailment, and implicature. It is presumed an account of language's diachronic features will follow. But the tools developed are imperfectly suited, and mask phenomena of interest. Chapter 1 concerns volitional meaning change of the sort advocated in conceptual engineering and amelioration. The question addressed is not what our concept, say, WOMAN, is, but what our concept should be. I bring to bear underappreciated empirical constraints on this normative project. Usage finely reflects equilibrium between communicative pressures (just as sales do between market pressures).<br>Revising concepts is not an impossible task, but has significantly different contours than its proponents, and opponents, believe. Chapter 2 concerns a family of cases that resemble those found in the mid-20th century. Austin's famous example is of a bird that looks for all the world like a goldfinch and then blows up like a grenade. Is it a goldfinch? A more realistic case involves the word "food": are meal replacement capsules food? Hard to say. There could be a separation, where British speakers affirm they are, and Americans deny it, without either appearing to misapply "food." Is this kind of open texture reducible to familiar linguistic phenomena, like vagueness? I argue not. It is a sui generis feature of meaning worthy of its own theory. Chapter 3 addresses the charge that radical conceptual analyses, or revisions, change the subject. On a standard picture of meaning, they do. But some puzzles about diachronic synonymy suggest otherwise.<br>I defend a radical position: truth-conditions are projected. They are partly a function of how, in the interpreter's community, it is reasonable to go on with the expression in question. For example, from our present perspective, "meal replacement capsules are food" may be false even as that very utterance is true from the perspective of future (or subaltern) speakers.<br>by Allison Robbins Koslow.<br>Ph. Abstract:
To meet these challenges, organizations are adopting competency-based people-management models as a response to the need for greater individual commitment and as an important strategy for gaining a competitive edge (Dutra, 2004). This study analyzes the implementation of such competency-based models and their meaning for organizational change, as signaled by the communication initiatives the companies adopted, from the perspective of different theoretical frameworks (Weick, 1999; Klein, 1996; Ford & Ford, 1995; Van de Ven & Poole, 1995; Lewin, 1951). Using a qualitative approach, multiple case studies were discussed. Seven companies from the telecommunications sector were selected, as representative of a high clock speed industry that in Brazil continuously undergoes intense and complex changes. The research findings are based on information collected from in-depth semi-structured interviews, closed-answer questionnaires and archival data. The findings reinforce the importance of communication efforts for putting a change project into effect. They also highlight the need to unravel the meanings triggered by information strategies used during the different phases of project implementation considering the competency-based HR management programs as examples of planned change.

Segue um enfoque funcionalista e, na pesquisa dos dados, apoia-se na sociolinguística variacional, nos moldes de Labov, tal como foi divulgada entre nós por Tarallo (1986 e 1990).<br>The aim of this work is to discuss the occurrence of the preposition por meaning purpose in texts in Portuguese language from XIII to XX centuries, observing the ocasions that this preposition have been gradually replaced by another one: the preposition para. It’s noticeable that, in older texts, occurrences of preposition por meaning purpose are majority, whereas, in most recent texts, preposition para occurs more frequently. The use of preposition por meaning purpose became only a matter of style. We intended to understand the different meanings of the prepositions we’re analyzing, through illustrations from Brazilian authors from the XIX century, Machado de Assis, José de Alencar and Lima Barreto; and from the XX century, Jorge Amado and José Lins do Rego. The particular meaning of purpose in preposition por has not been found in any author from the XX century. We intended to demonstrate the process of continuous disappearance of proposition por meaning purpose throughout the XX century. This work follows a historical approach. It adopts a functionalist perspective, and the collecting of data is based on Labov’s variationist sociolinguistics, as introduced in Brazil by Tarallo (1986 e 1990).

Full text
Abstract:
Thomas S. Kuhn claimed that the meanings of scientific terms change in theory changes or in scientific revolutions. In philosophy, meaning change has been taken as the source of a group of problems, such as untranslatability, incommensurability, and referential variance. For this reason, the majority of analytic philosophers have sought to deny that there can be meaning change by focusing on developing a theory of reference that would guarantee referential stability. A number of philosophers have also claimed that Kuhn’s view can be explained by the fact that he accepted and further developed many central tenets of logical empiricism. I maintain that the genesis of Kuhn’s meaning theorising lies in his historical approach and that his view of meaning change is justified. Later in his career he attempted to advance a theory of meaning and can be said to have had limited success in it. What is more, recent cognitive science has unexpectedly managed to shed light on Kuhn’s insights on the organisation of information in the mind, concept learning, and concept definition. Furthermore, although Kuhn’s critique of Putnam’s causal theory of reference has often been dismissed as irrelevant, he has a serious point to address. Kuhn thought that the causal theory that works so well with proper names cannot work with scientific terms. He held that conceptual categories are formed by similarity and dissimilarity relations; therefore, several features and not only one single property are needed for determination of extension. In addition, the causal theory requires universal substances as points of reference of scientific terms. Kuhn was a conceptualist, who held that universals do not exist as mind-independent entities and that mind-dependent family resemblance concepts serve the role of universals. Further, at the beginning of his career, Kuhn was interested in the question of what concepts or ideas are and how they change in their historical context. Although he did not develop his theorising on this issue, I demonstrate that this is a genuine problem in the philosophy of history. Finally, Kuhn argued that scientists cannot have access to truth in history because we cannot transcend our historical niche, and as a consequence, the truth of a belief cannot be a reason for theory choice. Instead of truth, we can rely on justification. I also discuss Kuhn’s idea that problem-solving is the main aim of science and show that this view can be incorporated into coherentist epistemology.

Abstract:
The aim of this work is to analyse the impact of the night on the visitors’experience. Here, the time of the day is considered as a parameter of the processof meaning building within the visitor’s experience. The link between visitors’ experience and night has not yet been thouroughlyresearched although a lot of cultural events take place at night time and provideand occasion for visiting museums. The phenomenological and semiotic analysis of the night impact, and perception, lead to the understanding of the emotional experience of the visitors during anight time visit. It reveals a variation of the meaning created by the apparition ofthe actual night in the museum and of the idea of night in the visitors’ mind.A night and day comparison of the reception of the cour Marly, in the musée duLouvre, questions the visitors’ speeches. It shows a network of interactionsbetween the night, the visitors and the exhibition which initiates a transformationof the meaning given by the exhibition and received by the visitors. In other words, the lighting modification between night and day affects thereconstruction of the exhibition’s message operated by the visitors at night. Theemotional aspect as well as the night phantasmagoria partake in the interpretationof the exhibition’s message and change it.Key words: night - reception - visitors’ experience - interpretation - - - - - phantasmagoria - night visit

Abstract:
Despite the universality, inevitability and normalcy of menopause, little is known of women's experiences. In particular, little or nothing is known of the meaning women attach to menopause. Despite (or because of) this lack of information, a controversy currently exists as to how women can best negotiate menopause, and as to the risks or benefits of hormone replacement theory. Research methodology was guided by recent studies on women's unique ways of knowing, valuing and construction of meaning. Menopause was explored within the framework of a group format with five postmenopausal coresearchers over a nine-week period. The women narrated their stories, listened to the stories of the other group members, reflected on their experiences and discussed those they had in common. Individual follow-up interviews were conducted 3 months later during which the coresearchers validated the transcript and offered additional perspectives. Despite widely varying experiences of menopause, 20 common threads were located. This study details a strong developmental and transitional component to the coresearchers' menopausal experiences, as well as the impact of a menstrual taboo and negative stereotype.<br>Education, Faculty of<br>Educational and Counselling Psychology, and Special Education (ECPS), Department of<br>Graduate

Abstract:
The impetus for this study was a pragmatic concern for the implementation of the Mathematics Year 1-10 Syllabus (Queensland Studies Authority, 2004) at Hillside Primary School (pseudonym). The researcher's involvement with this school was as the Support Teacher: Learning Difficulties 2002-2004. During this time the researcher assisted teachers by working with students who had difficulty acquiring the necessary mathematical skills which enabled them to keep pace with their peers, and actively participate in their environment. During these collaborations it became evident that the teachers had a general unease with the teaching of mathematics, and this became heightened as draft versions of the reform mathematics syllabus became available. Their concern specifically related to the introduction of a range of new content to the primary school syllabus, including a new strand, Patterns and Algebra, as well as the requirement of an investigative pedagogy. The researcher's interest in how teachers make meaning of this mandated curriculum reform was heightened by these concerns. This led the researcher to seek a more informed and sophisticated understanding of how the teachers at Hillside Primary School make sense of, and respond to, mandated curriculum reform. To this end this research study is situated within the research paradigm of constructivism, and informed by the research methodology of symbolic interactionism. This methodology requires the adoption of two distinct stages within the study: 'exploration' and 'inspection' (Blumer, 1998, p. 40). The exploration stage is a familarisation stage, which initially involved interviewing both the school's Principal and Head of Curriculum. From these interviews an instrument was developed and administered to all teachers.;Analysis of these data led to the inspection stage of the study where individual interviews were conducted with all teachers as a way to isolate significant elements within this research site. In this way, this study relied on a mixed methods approach. Analysis of these data led to a series of theoretical perspectives being proposed, which in turn led to the generation of this study's recommendations. Engagement in this two-stage inquiry process has drawn attention to the importance of collaboration between the Principal and teachers in a professional learning community as they make meaning of mandated curriculum reform

Muller, Annette. "Communicating technological change." Thesis, Queensland University of Technology, 1998. https://eprints.qut.edu.au/36322/1/36322_Muller_1998.pdf.

Full text
Abstract:
The literature suggests that communication is important in all aspects of organising, and therefore important in the successful introduction of organisational change. It also suggests that Communication Style, in particular, is important in the uptake of technological change by employees; or alternatively that Communication Style is worthy of investigation as a likely source of beneficial influence. Based on the literature review, the study advanced the research question: Are workers' preferred communication styles associated with their level of appropriation of new technologies? In order to examine the research question three hypotheses were tested, namely: ♦ HI: Respondents, when rating communication items on the basis of effectiveness, will implicitly identify four communication styles. ♦ H2: Acceptors and rejectors of new technologies will be divided into two distinct groups. ♦ H3: There is a relationship between organisational members preferred communication styles and their appropriation of new technology. The hypotheses were examined by developing one survey instrument that measured communication style, and another instrument that measured appropriation of technology. In order to develop the Communication Style instrument, Dixon's (1998) items were modified to reflect a formal organisational context and the judgement criterion changed from richness to effectiveness. To develop the Appropriation instrument, items were developed that measured worker perception of the adoption of the technology in the organisation and also worker evaluation of general acceptance or rejection of the technology. A convenience sample was used, as it was considered adequate for an exploratory study. Exploratory factor analysis was used to reduce the data complexity of both the communication and the appropriation items. As well, the factor analysis was used to identify factors corresponding to communication styles and levels of appropriation. The study confirmed Dixon's 1998 study. The study lends some support towards the position that acceptors and rejectors of new technologies will be divided into two distinct groups, although not enough to allow its acceptance, as the distribution is too small to demonstrate a distinct bimodal distribution. The study identified those items that loaded most strongly on each communication factor to use as illustrative archetypes of the factor. Respondents were assigned to a communication style based on the factor on which they had the largest factor score. The mean scores of respondents assigned to communication styles for each archetypal item were obtained, and it was demonstrated that these scores were significantly different, using t-tests. Thus archetypal items for each communication style were identified, a result with important theoretical and practical implications. The study identified extreme appropriation factor scores, and crosstabulated these groups against Communication Style to examine whether there was an association between the two variables. The crosstabulation established such an association. That is, people who strongly accept or strongly reject technology tend to have different communication styles. The researcher conducted a focus group of four people chosen to represent a vertical slice through a university school. The purpose of the group was to help the researcher to reflect on the research project, its successes and failures, its strengths and weaknesses, with the aim of giving advice and direction to other researchers.

McLaren, Rosemary. "Rethinking the body-spaces for change : a qualitative analysis of textual and visual representations of menopause." Thesis, Curtin University, 1999. http://hdl.handle.net/20.500.11937/1475.

Full text
Abstract:
The focus of this study is the exploration and interpretation of women's visual and textual experiences of menopause. It is a conversational mapping of embodied space and time as they re-imagine memories and actual experiences which have informed their changing sense of self during the transitional stages of menopause. The research examines the ways in which artwork, visual diaries, journals, creative writing and poetry make visible a fresh perception of their female sense of the lived body. The project examines the contemporary cultural meanings of femininity, sexuality and identity which have informed women's understanding of their bodies and gender during the transformative years of menopause, and it explores the ways in which these forms of knowledge have influenced their artistic modes of self-representation.In the first chapter I acquaint the reader with the context of the research, and outline my understandings of the human body and social theories. I direct the exploration of texts towards a range of feminist theoretical perspectives which suggest women's biological and reproductive bodies provide spaces for re-visioning personal and social change. The next two chapters explain how I develop theoretical and methodological arts-based approaches enabling an innovative and appropriate investigation of the phenomenon in question. I explain how I have blended various textual expressive genres with interpretive research methodologies and philosophical viewpoints. In these chapters I recount the imaginative strategies and techniques used to portray the ontological, phenomenological and epistemological perspectives of the lived experience of menopause.Following this, I present seven stories. Each story portrays how artistic genres grasp particular experiences and transform them into imaginative expressive inter-textual representations. The stories also demonstrate how this type of research is done, and how the meaning-making processes of collaborative research draw out resonances towards real and imagined, and internal and external sites of personal and political significance.Accompanying the stories is a fourth chapter entitled Menopause Perspecta X 5. In writing this section, I adopt a different narrational approach and voice as I move from the realm of storyteller to that of art curator presenting a series of visual images and the poetic writings of five women. As well as portraying different voices speaking at different levels, each presentation continues the task of opening spaces for translation between word and image. The thesis concludes with a reflective overview of the menopausal body, image and text. In the coda, Notes Towards A Work In Progress, I express my thoughts on creating alternative spatial practices, and tell another story. Through its poetic and lyrical content, I attempt to offer possibilities for restoring a sense of menopausal self, love, hope, and a meaningful relationship with the world.

Abstract:
This study explores the meanings that people attributed to their involvement in a participatory on-farm practice change project. Three techniques of discourse analysis were used. The first two identify the diversity among narratives of the participants and explores the origin of these differences. The third technique examined differences and tensions within and across the narratives to identify the discourses that were operating. Participation was found to be mediated through discourse as agents created and reproduced some discourses through their many social acts. For example, some participants recalled incidences of feeling excluded when they presented an alternative understanding of the project. As a result, these people tended to reduced their involvement rather than explore the differences. The project's discourses therefore routinised the participatory experience and tended to lock the narrative in time despite over two decades of rapid social change. Thi s meant the project discourse mediated a favoured type of participation, one that met a symbolic character rather than the particular farming practices it promoted. The discourses reveal different patterns of sense making among participants involved in the same event. Uneven participation is comprehended from the multiple patterns as a consequence of the participants' discursive practices. Articulating differences in discursive design will assist to create conditions useful for an authentic communication among participants engaged in change programs.

Hancocks, Matthew A. "Disclosing new worlds? : strategic management, styles and meaning." Thesis, University of Essex, 2017. http://repository.essex.ac.uk/19468/.

Full text
Abstract:
The philosopher Martin Heidegger argued that the truthful life was at risk of being lost in Western technological culture in the name of increasing control, efficiency, and agility.  As the risk is actualised, so the human essence as truth maker is obscured and life itself feels poorer. This thesis draws on Heideggerian philosophy to demonstrate the loss in two dominant styles of contemporary strategic management: the world-picturing and, more recent, agile style. It builds a theory of post-agile strategic practice, which I call adaptive, to address this loss. Consistent with Heideggerian philosophy, I utilise a transformative disclosure methodology and a literary, paradigmatic case reading method to address the questions: Why is agile strategic management so unsatisfying? How do Heideggerian scholars shed light on this dissatisfaction? How do Heideggerians understand the emerging style and what strategic management practices can I propose for the future? After introducing agile strategic management and the impoverishment of life that it fosters, I set out how Heidegger’s philosophy of truth, thinking, and the sacred both sheds light on the problem and suggests a remedy for it. I closely read paradigmatic texts of the world-picturing and agile strategic management styles to demonstrate how business strategy theorisation lines up with extraordinary closeness to Heidegger’s philosophical assessment. I then analyse three Heideggerian prototypes for an adaptive style of strategy practice, concentrating on one paradigmatic text to identify their principal weakness: the omission of the sacred. I illustrate and contrast paradigmatic cases of both the agile and adaptive styles drawn from the beer industry and draw on the adaptive case to construct a theory of adaptive strategy practice, which addresses the problem of the loss of truth, suggesting pedagogical and strategic management practices. I conclude by summarising its findings and contributions, noting some limitations and connections to other studies and suggesting further lines of research.

McAteer, Erica. "Typeface effects in written language : functions of typeface change for signalling meaning within text." Thesis, University of Glasgow, 1989. http://theses.gla.ac.uk/1105/.

Full text
Abstract:
Typeface change is one of the resources of written language which, in combination with other paralinguistic signs available to that system (use of space, punctuation, syntax manipulation are examples), can facilitate the author's intended interpretation. The thirteen studies undertaken for this research project explored the effects of typeface manipulations upon subjects' interpretations of brief texts, testing the efficiency of two conventional forms of emphasis, capital letters and italic print. Studies one to four specifically addressed issues of distinction between the two typefaces. It was found that both forms of typeface could function to intensify certain adjectives on a simple measurement scale, with capital letters providing quantifiably `more' to a referent than italics, as italics did over plain case. Both typefaces were tested for their ability to provide modulatory or contrastive emphasis for a word, where it was found that effects differed between the typefaces, suggesting divergent functions. Subjects' responses to a direct request to describe differences between capital and italic print, supported these findings. Studies five to nine examined the effects of typeface change and sentence sequence upon texts, by asking subjects to rank versions where these variables were manipulated. Strong concordances were found to be linked to information structure within the texts. Study ten took the same set of texts and presented versions individually to subjects in a story continuation task. The effects of emphasis and information sequence which were found suggest again the importance of content, which cooperated or conflicted with other paralinguistic signals in a text. The `foregrounding' effect of typeface emphasis on secondary information increased its availability for the production of continuation content. Studies eleven to thirteen looked at typeface change as a facility for signalling theme maintenance or enhancement, operating to disambiguate texts by reinforcing their `default' or natural readings, as well as its efficiency in signalling theme shift by contrastive emphasis. Different strategies of typeface emphasis were found to function for each of these requirements. Throughout all the studies, both forms of typeface emphasis were tested, either in contrast or in combination. Evidence accumulated to suggest that capital letters functioned best for providing modulatory emphasis, italic print for contrastive. Outside this issue of individual differences, typeface change itself was found to be an efficient strategy for indicating the author's intended interpretation to the reader.
