Nelson, Alexander William Robb. "The process of changing reference in simple texts." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 1992. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/20059.

Full text
Abstract:
The thesis investigates the link between memory and the construction of representations of individuals by studying referential change. The issue of how properties of individuals are represented as belonging to one and the same individual in memory is considered, and the processing of simple descriptions of pairs of individuals is considered in relation to this issue. Previous work has shown that referentially predictable descriptions of individuals impose no cost when attention switched between individuals. This investigation shows that when texts are referentially unpredictable, switching reference does cost time and that the two individuals are treated symmetrically. Recall analysis supports this and suggests that subjects focus on one of the individuals more than the other. This is explained by assuming that subjects encode simple surface characteristics which allow them to infer the pattern of attribute binding described by a text. When this mapping from surface order to semantics is disrupted by the introduction of unpredictability, subjects respond by treating the individuals asymmetrically which restores the mapping. It is proposed that this use of surface information is a general feature of language processing. Work on parallel function in pronoun comprehension is a closely related issue and some work had already addressed the issue of surface information effects. Therefore an investigation of parallelism in pronoun comprehension was carried out which revealed effects of surface information along with effects of grammatical parallelism which interacted with animacy and sentence structure. The investigation of switching reference also revealed word length effects which were interpreted as speech-based memory effects. Further investigations of these effects showed that they were not interfered with by articulatory suppression which contradicts interpretations of similar effects reported in the immediate serial list recall literature.

Lindskog, Magnus. "Changing to third party logistics." Licentiate thesis, Linköping University, Linköping University, Logistics, 2003. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:liu:diva-5125.

Full text
Abstract:

Third party logistics (TPL), the procurement of an integrated set of logistics services in a long-term relationship between a shipper (goods owner) and a service provider, is today a viable option for how companies carry out their logistics activities. Very little has been written on implementation or change issues in a TPL setting; these issues are identified as important, but not elaborated. There is however reason to believe that implementation of TPL arrangements, or rather establishment thereof, involves a complex change process involving substantial change for a wide range of actors in both the shipper’s and the provider’s organisation.

When comparing literature that deals with the TPL establishment process with a stream of research that is concerned with logistics change, it comes to light that there is a discrepancy between the theoretical and methodological foundations of the former works, and what is written in these pieces regarding the process. It is concluded that recommendations for how to manage the establishment process are given without being founded in a theory of process, or research designs capable of studying process. The theoretical underpinnings of TPL literature are founded in a view of change as a matter of conducting rational analysis and conceiving the strategically wisest decisions for the logistics system as a whole. Implementation is viewed as an unproblematic exercise of issuing directives to affected actors, asserting that all actors are rational, therefore rationally conceived decisions will be accepted and implemented accordingly.

Therefore the overarching purpose of this research is:

To explore the change process of third party logistics establishment

To fulfil this purpose the two streams of research mentioned above are combined. A meta-model of process consisting of the three interrelated dimensions content, context, and process forms the starting point for the study of process, but this is not sufficient for a study of change; a theory of change which is capable of capturing the mechanisms of the change process as it unfolds is also needed. Therefore the theory of change of the second stream of research mentioned above is adopted.

The theory of change encompasses three models of change, which are archetypical representations of the mechanisms underlying change processes according to different assumptions of what change is and how change comes about. These models are denoted the linear, the processual, and the circular. One important aspect of this theory of change is that the approach to change should be aligned with the extent oflearning requirements on the actors who are affected by or involved in the change. An actors perspective is therefore called for, and adopted in this thesis.

This thesis is the first step of a wider research effort concerned with studying the process of establishing TPL. Therefore, of the three dimensions of change, the contentdimension is excluded from study in this thesis. Governed by the meta-model of process, two research objectives are formulated:

To explore the context within which the TPL establishment process unfolds and describe the contextual dependence of this process

&

To describe the change process of TPL establishment in terms of the linear, processual, and circular models of change

The empirical investigation applied is a single-case retrospective study, in which the case is the establishment process between a Swedish company and an international TPL service provider. A total of fifteen actors have been interviewed; ten on the shipper side of the dyad, five on the provider side. Although the TPL establishment process is an interorganisational process, this thesis focuses on the intraorganisational process of the shipper, why the empirical material from the other side of the dyad is not used in this thesis, The interorganisational aspect, as well as the intraorganisational side within the provider’s organisation are nevertheless important, and will be included in future research.

The interviews were carried out in an unstructured manner, in which the interviewees were asked to retell the story from their own perspectives. Actors from varying positions, who were involved in the process, are included in the study; in the total sample all groups who were most affected or involved are represented. The interviews rendered ten stories of the studied process.

These stories were then analysed by means of a pattern-matching logic, in order to seek out the important contextual dependencies of the process, and to explore the mechanisms of the change process, as it evolved in context.

After having conducted this first step of the ongoing research effort, four main conclusions can be drawn:

- The TPL establishment process is context dependent.

- Not only rational mechanisms are at play in the process.

- It is important to acknowledge actors, not only systems.

- It is important to acknowledge the process, not only the decision.

Abstract:
Members of the workplace are at the heart of the organizational learning process. They play a major role by communicating their shared perceptions, distributing knowledge, and acting as human components of the broader organizational memory. Today, three generations cohabitate in the work environment, each of whom have their own distinct traits that influence how they perceive and enact learning. This thesis explores how Millennials experience organizational learning and its significance. By applying Crossan et al.’s (1999) 4I Framework, the process of intuiting, interpreting, integrating, and institutionalizing are considered from the standpoint of the Millennial generation. The methodology for this study includes semi-structured interviews and qualitative thematic analysis to better understand this relationship. This is based on 13 conversations with members all drawn from a single organization. The findings describe how Millennials see learning as fundamental as well as how they overcome the challenges they face and apply their knowledge.

Full text
Abstract:
Saturated fat has a good potential for improving emulsion stability and products texture. However in the past ten years, food industry has intended to reduce its amount to prevent its impact on heart diseases. Therefore a better understanding of fat crystallisation has been studied to design the final properties of fat systems by changing the formulation and process of crystallisation. Fat crystallisation occurs in several stages like nucleation, crystal growth and fat network formation. Adding emulsifiers or waxes has demonstrated the possibility to change the process of crystallisation by promoting primary or secondary nucleation as a function of additive concentration. The head group size of emulsifiers has also exhibited an influence on fat crystallisation by promoting secondary nucleation with glycerol or primary heterogeneous nucleation with sorbitol. Furthermore waxes differing by their single or multi-component nature, have induced secondary and primary nucleation respectively. The process of crystallisation has been changed by applying different cooling rates and shear rates; increasing the cooling rate increased the number of nucleation sites and shear could enhance the interactions between fat and emulsifiers. Finally formulation and process have displayed the design of the final texture and allowed a reduction in saturated fat of 50 % while keeping the same network strength.

Abstract:
A framework, consisting of a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation model coupled to a population balance model (PBM) is developed to study the effect of various parameters on the performance of an emulsion polymerization process which leads to the production of a fine dispersion of polymer particles in a continuous aqueous medium.Like most polymer products, latexes are “products-by-process”, whose main properties are determined during polymerization. One of the main parameters influencing the final quality of the latexes is the particle size distribution (PSD). Modeling the evolution of PSD is usually accomplished through the addition of a set of PBEs to the kinetic model. PBE provides a means of considering the contribution of different phenomena in the PSD evolution, being nucleation, growth of polymer particles by polymerization, and coagulation of particles due to brownian or fluid motion (Perikinetic and Orthokinetic coagulation, respectively). To assess the impact of nonhomogeneous mixing and physical parameters of the system on the evolution of the latex PSD, the transient simulation of flow was performed with the aid of a commercial CFD Package (Fluent® 15.0) to provide in each time step, the local concentrations of ionic species (to determine the rate of perikinetic coagulation modeled by DLVO model) and certain hydrodynamic parameters such as turbulence dissipation rate and shear rate (to determine the rate of orthokinetic coagulation). This information is applied simultaneously by the PBE add-on module of Fluent to calculate the PSD for the next time step; thus a complete coupling between CFD and PBM is assured

Abstract:
In our rapidly developing society, companies and education have to continuously reflect upon their ways of working in order learn and improve. Learning within organizations can be measured by studying behavioral change, and research has shown that behavioral change can be achieved with technology enhanced interventions and coaching. The purpose of this study is to explore how the participants perceive a behavioral change process when it is matched with technology, what aspects of the process that effect the participants’ learning and behavior, and to find a technological solution which enables coaching for behavioral change. This has been done by a user-centered designed process where the participants used surveys to assess their behavior and attitudes. The data collected was then used as basis for coaching, reflection and feedback. In conclusion, this study showed a perceived change in behavior due to reflection and increased transparency into the change process, both facilitated by the technology added to the process.

Abstract:
The changes in the energy market dispatching and pricing, have increased the need to start fossil steam turbines faster to meet demand and save fuel. Exelon worked with a consultant to optimize the start up times of their steam turbines resulting in greatly reduced start up times, increased dispatching frequency, and reduced thermal stresses on the turbines. This optimized start up process was achieved by utilization of the Valve Open Start (VOS) and Accelerated Hot Start (AHS) process. VOS utilizes condenser vacuum aligned to the steam generator to produce superheated steam at much lower temperatures and pressures than usual. This steam is drawn through the turbine to warm the unit while the boiler increases in temperature and pressure. The AHS changes the startup sequence of operations by setting up the turbine in a manner that allows the turbine to roll at precisely the time that a perfect temperature match is obtained between the main steam temperature and first stage metal temperature. The use of these processes significantly increases profitability of the units and meets all OEM criteria for unit protection and results in a reduction in rotor thermal gradient, temperature mismatch, and thermally induced vibration.
