Abstract:
Generally, a process describes a change of state of some kind (state transformation). This state change occurs from an initial state to a concluding state. Here, the authors take a step back and take a holistic look at generic processes and process sequences from a state perspective. The novel perspective this concept introduces is that the processes and their parameters are not the priority; they are rather included in the analysis by implication. A supervised machine learning based feature ranking method is used to identify and rank relevant state characteristics and thereby the processes’ inter- and intrarelationships. This is elaborated with simplified examples of possible applications from different domains to make the theoretical concept and results more feasible for readers from varying domains. The presented concept allows for a holistic description and analysis of complex, multistage processes sequences. This stands especially true for process chains where interrelations between processes and states, processes and processes, or states and states are not fully understood, thus where there is a lack of knowledge regarding causations, in dynamic, complex, and high-dimensional environments.

Abstract:
Across Europe and beyond, much is being made of the perceived breakdown of the nation state, which was historically configured as a ‘container’ of heritage formations, adopting and perusing local traditions where possible but oppressing them where they were deemed unsuitable. Migration is seen as eroding the rigid boundaries of this configuration, potentially liberating identities and heritages in the process. This special issue aims to address the relationship between critical heritage and redefinitions of self, other, community and place within the contemporary global reality of movement and flux.

Abstract:
70 Background: National organizations recommend routine screening for psychosocial distress in cancer patients. American College of Surgeons (ACoS) Commission on Cancer mandates screening for accreditation with requirements for timing/method/tool for screening; assessment/referral; and documentation. Methods: MD Anderson routinely screens patients for distress with policies and algorithms for the process. We sought to enhance this standard process by incorporating a dedicated psychosocial liaison in the clinic to ensure screening based on NCCN guidelines, follow-up with patients at the medical visit, and clear documentation and referral per ACoS standards. This study compared the standard process to the enhanced process (which occurred in parallel) through a 6-month retrospective chart review of Thoracic Center patients identified as distressed by either process. Results: The enhanced process utilized the Distress Thermometer (DT) cut-off > 4 resulting in optimal specificity (.77) and sensitivity (.64) compared to the standard process using > 6 (specificity = .87; sensitivity = .34). In the enhanced process (N = 71), 99% were seen during the clinic visit, compared to 13% in the standard process (N = 92) (Fishers Exact; P < .0001). In the standard process, 18% were contacted by phone, 10% were seen later while in-patient, and 33% received a phone message; for 26%, no note was dictated. In the enhanced process, there were high rates of documentation of assessments of suicide (100%), depressive symptoms (100%) and anxiety symptoms (96%) compared to the standard process where documentation occurred less often (suicide 5%; depressive symptoms 11%; anxiety symptoms 11%) (Fishers Exact; all P’s < .0001). Conclusions: Results support the institution’s recent practice change to > 4 on the DT. The enhanced process utilizing a psychosocial liaison facilitates screening at the clinic visit and can support existing mental health providers who may have competing responsibilities. Findings also suggest having standards for distress documentation. Overall, the enhanced process fully meets ACoS standards in all required areas.

Abstract:
This article investigates a change in the structuring of work time, using a natural experiment to test whether participation in a corporate initiative (Results Only Work Environment; ROWE) predicts corresponding changes in health-related outcomes. Drawing on job strain and stress process models, we theorize greater schedule control and reduced work-family conflict as key mechanisms linking this initiative with health outcomes. Longitudinal survey data from 659 employees at a corporate headquarters shows that ROWE predicts changes in health-related behaviors, including almost an extra hour of sleep on work nights. Increasing employees’ schedule control and reducing their work-family conflict are key mechanisms linking the ROWE innovation with changes in employees’ health behaviors; they also predict changes in well-being measures, providing indirect links between ROWE and well-being. This study demonstrates that organizational changes in the structuring of time can promote employee wellness, particularly in terms of prevention behaviors.

Abstract:
In this article, the author addresses a neglected area of study, namely codal amendment in Canada. The author argues that the theoretical justi-fcations for the Civil Code of Québec and its distinctive design features raise concerns about how the Code is currently amended. In response to these concerns, the author draws on the rich literature concerning law reform in Canada to propose a reform institute that is charged with overseeing the process of codal amendment. Moreover, the author contends that when Canadian courts and Parliament respond to and the Quebec legislature effects changes to codal text they should be closely attentive to the purposes underlying the constitutional division of powers. To illustrate this last contention, the author critiques the Federal Law — Civil Law Harmonization Act, No. 1 and recent legislative and judicial developments respecting marriage and the civil union.

Abstract:
This article focuses on patterns of the peopling of East Bengal from the seventeenth to the twentieth centuries and analyses the dynamics of this process in terms of the migrants’ religious, social and political values. In this process, a number of boundaries were crossed, which South Asian Area Studies experts are still struggling to understand. Exploring this phenomenon of changing frontiers from a comparative historical perspective, the westward expansion of America during almost the same phase is analysed, showing similarities between the two phenomena, but also distinct dissimilarities. In Bengal, unlike America, there was no major violence involved and the migrations into Bengal were not at the cost of the native inhabitants, as largely happened in America. Arguing that, in grappling with the present Bangladesh–India relations, such historical knowledge is necessary, the article calls for greater interactions between intellectuals from both sides, which may be called Track III dialogue.
