Abstract:
Two of the most important issues in wireless systems are addressed: channel estimation and channel coding. The frequency domain channel estimation techniques are used to estimate the channel in a WiMAX system (standard IEEE 802.16e). In the same system, Low-Density Parity-Check (LDPC) codes are proposed and perform quite well. In this thesis decoding techniques for these codes are studied: a modification to the Message Passing Algorithm (MPA) is proposed in order to reduce the number of multiplications. Then two alternative decoding methods for LDPC codes are explored: the Priority First Searc

This thesis deals with an application of turbo codes across Space Time Spreading Channel. This is done by undertaking a study into the extent to which these error correction codes can reduce the bit error rate across the space time spreading channel. Both the turbo codes and space time channel have been developed in Matlabs Simulink. The thesis starts with an introduction to turbo codes which is presented on the basis of classical turbo codes introduced by Berrou et al in 1993 (Berrou et al., 1993). Low-density parity check (LDPC) codes have experienced tremendous popularity due to their capacity-achieving performance. In this dissertation, several different aspects of LDPC coding and its applications to magnetic storage are investigated. One of the most significant issues that impedes the use of LDPC codes in many systems is the error-rate floor phenomenon associated with their iterative decoders. By delineating the fundamental principles, we extend to partial response channels algorithms for predicting the error rate performance in the floor region for the binary-input AWGN channel. We

Polar codes were invented as the first error-correcting codes to achieve the capacity for the discrete channels with relatively low-complexity for encoding and decoding. However, this is only possible with significantly large code lengths which are not practical for many systems. Meanwhile, the performance of the finite-lengths polar codes is not competitive with other modern error-correcting codes. This can be attributed to the suboptimality of the decoding process and the relatively poor minimum Hamming distances. This thesis aims to improve the performance of polar codes. The contributions

Abstract:
A new platform for HDTV transmissions, in the form of a new generation terrestrial digital video broadcasting standard (DVB-T2), has been developed by the DVB Project. A number of technical innovations have been included in DVB-T2 to boost throughput and ruggedness, enhance single-frequency network coverage, and ease both transmitter and receiver implementation. Several strategies have been investigated during the standard definition. This thesis present a research branch of this investigation starting from a multi-antenna overview: a new soft detector for space-time block codes (STBCs) is pro

Abstract:
Multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) technology, originated in the 1990s, is an emerging and fast growing area of communication research due to the ability to provide diversity as well as transmission degrees-of-freedom. Recent research focus on MIMO systems has shifted from the point-to-point link to the one-to-many multiuser links due to the ever increasing demand for multimedia-intensive services from users. The downlink of a multiuser transmission is called the broadcast channel (BC) and the reverse many-to-one uplink is termed the multiple access channel (MAC). Early studies in the MIMO

Abstract:
Traditional solutions to information security in communication systems act in the application layer and are oblivious to the effects in the physical layer. Physical-layer security methods, of which information-theoretic security is a special case, try to extract security from the random effects in the physical layer. In information-theoretic security, there are two asymptotic notions of secrecy---weak and strong secrecy This dissertation investigates the problem of information-theoretic strong secrecy on the binary erasure wiretap channel (BEWC) with a specific focus on designing practical co

Abstract:
The full spatial covariance matrix of the multiple input multiple-output (MIMO) channel is an important quantity in channel modeling, communication system signal processing, and performance analysis, and therefore this matrix forms the heart of the research outlined in this dissertation. The work begins with an investigation of a generalized framework for computing the full MIMO spatial covariance based on the power angular spectrum (PAS) of the multipath field and the transmit and receive antenna element radiation patterns. For the case of uniform linear arrays and when the PAS clusters satis
