Full textSevdalinka, a Bosnian traditional song, fonctions as a representation of identity. Through its poetical and literary content as well as its musical organization, it narrates the history of Bosnian people, from historical, political and sociocultural perspective. Over time, sevdalinka maintained the essential of its role, the cultural preservation, regardless of the historical developments, political changes and sociocultural modifications. The process of that preservation is reflected through the fundamentals of this music; “dignity” and “balance”. “Dignity” and “balance” are rooted at the poetical and literary levels as well as musical, through nostalgia and phonostylistics respectively. “Dignity” and “balance” are essential in order to achieve an axiological perception, defined by the valorization of the sevdalinka for its poetical and literary as well as musical content, its transmission and reception, to the point of being qualified “authentic”. That is when sevdah is achieved, state of transendance caused by a contemplation of a serene life style and emotional fulfillment, of personal discovery within oneself and within the others

Full textA long epic cycle written at the turn of the 13th and 14th centuries built up the chanson of Huon de Bordeaux. What scholars call the Chanson d’Yde et Olive, to intend the third sequel, unites three different episodes, Yde et Olive I, Croissant and Yde et Olive II, which relate the adventures of the granddaughter and the great-grandson of the hero of Bordeaux. In my thesis, I propose a new critical edition, a commentary and a study of the transmission in Italy of these heretofore unrecognized texts which represent a typical sample of the late chansons de geste. In the 13th and 14th centuries, epic draws from the same narrative patterns as the tales, the hagiographic legends, the novels and the dramas. Furthermore, Yde et Olive I has undoubtedly contributed to transmit Yde’s fabulous history beyond the Alps, as the plot of the Italian cantari of Antonio Pucci and Piero da Siena seems to prove.So at the boundary between orality and writing, the Chanson d’Yde et Olive interacts with several texts belonging to different literary genres, enriches an imaginary which does not know any border, interrogates the established order and finally confronts us with the boundary of male/female divides

Full textThis study is an analysis of the relation between the poems of Auguste Brizeux and traditional Breton folksongs. It is inspired by the curious and unconventional poetic structure found in his poems, similar to the forms particular to the traditional song of Lower-Brittany. We suppose that this particularity comes from the adaptation of the poetic system found in Breton song to French poetry. If that is the case, this hypothesis would also lead to a new question: As Brizeux was close to Théodore Hersart de La Villemarqué, author of the Barzaz-Breiz, had there been a real influence between the poetic practice of our poet, Brizeux, and the production of the so-called “Breton folksongs" published in this La Villemarqué's famous book? This compelling question is the source of interest in our comparative study, its motivation and the thread that leads us to an intriguing conclusion

THE SONGS SELECTED IN THIS CORPUS MAINLY CONCERN THE IMPORTANT EVENTS OF THE PEASANTS YEAR, FAMILY RELATIONSHIPS, BULGARIAN HISTORY AND THE LIVES OF THE HAJDUT. THE STRUCTURE OF THESE SONGS IS BUILT PRIMARILY ON THE USE OF REPRETITION WHICH HELPS TO FOCUS THE ATTENTION OF THE AUDIANCE ON THE MESSAGE ; SECONDILY, THE GRADATION AND ESPECIALLY THE "NEGATIVE GRADATION" strengthENS AND INTENSIFIES THIS EMPHASIS ; AND FINALLY, OF LEAST IMPORTANCE, THE ANTITHESIS WHICH APPEARS STRONGLY IN THE USE OF TWO CONTRASTING SYMBOLIC IDEAS WITHIN ONE IMAGE. THE SUBJECTIVITY OF THE LANGUAGE APPEARS MAINLY IN THE USE OF VOCATIVE FORMS ADDED TO EXCLAMATIVES AND INJUNCTIVES. THE USE OF THE DIMINUTIVE IS MOSTLY CONFINED TO A SYNTAGM ADJ + SUBSTANTIVE, RATHER THAN A SUFFIXE. MOST OF THE SONGS ARE WRITTEN IN DIRECT SPEECH AND EVEN THOUGH MORE THAN TWO CHARACTERS MAY BE EVOKED AT THE BEGINNING, IT WILL ALWAYS EVOLVE INTO A STRICT DIALOGUE. THE VERBA DICENDI ARE USED WITHOUT REGARD TO TENSE. THIS INDIFFERENCE TO CHRONOLOGY IS FURTHER CONFIRMED BY THE DOMINATION OF PSYCHOLOGICAL TIME, THE EVOLUTION OF THE STORY JUMPING FROM ONE IMPORTANT EVENT TO ANOTHER. Full textThis dissertation studies linguistically modified songs found in traditional singer, Allain Kelly`s repertoire. When we first listen to this bilingual and bicultural singer, his repertoire seems to be divided simply along linguistic lines, French and English songs. But, after listening more closely, another small section becomes apparent, a parcel of ( ) songs that have been linguistically modified. These songs are the object of this project. It analyses the motivations that brought Allain Kelly to use his linguistic and musical abilities to adapt and translate existing versions of traditional songs. It also looks at the process he used to carry out the modifications. The research is based on my interviews with Allain Kelly, as well as those carried out by other ethnologists notably, Ronald Labelle, Margaret Steiner, Helen Creighton, Louise Manny, Edward Ives and Père Anselme Chiasson. An analysis of Allain Kelly`s discourse helped elicit his perceptions of his own bilingualism and biculturalism (Chapter 2). The exploration of his linguistic adaptations (Chapter 3) and translations (Chapter 4) allows for a better understanding of linguistic modifications of traditional songs within one person’s repertoire. This case study explores the ties between one person’s enculturation, linguistic resources, vision of the world, and how these factors impacted his creativity. It shows that Allain Kelly perceived two distinct audiences, one, French, and the other, English. This perception fostered his desire to create a bridge between two unequal linguistic groups. It is one man’s attempt to lessen a divide, and thus fill a void, through song.

Full textThis thesis studies the international circulation of Chilean folk music’s during the second half of the 20th century. We discuss the international trajectory of singers and folk ensemble related to the Chilean Left, also their artistic practices, the space of musical circulation and the ways in which this folk music is welcomed by the general public, music critics, political organizations and media, including the left-wing press and labels. The geographical space of this circulation is constituted by the countries of Western Europe. The study period is circumscribed by two significant moments for the international circulation of Chilean folklore: the first trip to Europe of folk singer Violeta Parra in 1954 and the end of the exile of Chilean musicians in 1988. For more than 30 years, the musicians have been interacting extensively with the diverse artistic and political contexts of Europe. The first part of the thesis studies the activities that Chilean musicians performed in Europe between 1954 and the government of Salvador Allende (1970–1973), in a context of a strong exotic look towards the music of America Latin. The second part examines the artistic activities taking place between 1968 and 1982, when the political events of Chile locate the cultural manifestations, including the folklore, in a privileged place of the artistic circuits of the European left. Finally, the third part examines the artistic experiences developed between 1978 and 1988, and analyzes the repercussions that life in exile has on the practice of Chilean folklore in Europe, notably the questioning of the role of politics
