Abstract:
A literary work is a form of the author's imagination written with a background in various fields of life. The characters in a literary story also have the same problems as humans in real life. The author, in writing a story, is motivated by the conditions and environment that exist around him and affects him. The story in a novel, short story, or poetry reflects various aspects of human life. Literary works will present a story that can be viewed from various points of view, including from a psychological perspective. We can examine each character from a psychological point of view. How the character's psychological condition will appear from a story that can be examined by looking at the character's behavior, how he relates to other characters, and how he deals with problems in his life. George Eliot's Silas Marner novel is an interesting story which can be examined from a psychological point of view, namely the psychology of existentialism. Silas Marner's character in this novel will be analyzed from a psychological perspective. How Silas Marner's character in self-existence will appear in the psychology of existentialism.

The relevance of the study of the problem of Christian axiology is due to the growing interest in religion and the associated change in world outlook and values in contemporary Ukrainian society. The study of religious values is caused by the urgent problem of finding universal moral values of social development and clarifying the content, structure and nature of their functioning. However, all the basic principles of Christian doctrine acquire character of value only in the presence of subjective attitude, their personal importance for the believing individual. Only in this way can religious values influence the motivation of actions and determine human behavior.

Abstract:
The novel Burung-Burung Migran created by Miranda Harlan and Sutik AS reveals female power in a way she deals with how hard a life could be. Sutik’s character which portrayed in the novel is suitable to be viewed from feministic perspective. Therefore, the study was taken, besides explaining the structure of the novel, also to explain, in particularly, the image of Sutik’s character in the Burung-Burung Migran’s novel viewed from feministic perspective. The object studied from this novel was about the structure of the novel itself, which divided into three elements; the background, characterization, and the plot of the story. However, Sutik’s characterization was analyzed through three different aspects, physically, psychologically, and socially. This literature study of Burung-Burung Migran applies descriptive qualitative method with feministic ideological mode of literature critics approach. It uses a written form source, taken from the novel “Burung-Burung Migran” by Miranda Harlan and Sutik AS. The data is collected through a literature study and analyzed through several steps, which are (a) data selection, (b) identification and classification of the data, (c) data interpretation, which finally ends in the drawing of conclusion. The result of the study shows that the structure of the novel, “Burung-Burung Migran”, considered from the background, has nine place settings, eight time settings, and five social settings. It has ten characters, which are prominent in the story, also has fifty-five other characters. Considered from the plotting, it uses back-and-forth flow of ideas, which has four climaxes of different stages. However, the image of Sutik’s character is divided into three different aspects, they are one physical aspect, five psychological aspects, and her social aspect is subdivided into three aspects of hers in the family and three others in the society. My suggestion is that another study needs to be conducted towards this novel, from feministic gynocritics perspective. In addition to that point, in order to achieve the best result in conducting a feminist literature study, the appropriate choice of data source is a necessity.

Abstract:
The article focuses on the problems of bullying. Legal and socio-psychological aspects are analyzed in order to further prevention and improvement of the methods counteracting this phenomenon. In particular, the stages of development of the problem are drawn, special attention is paid to research in which it is possible to develop a plan of action to prevent bullying in educational institutions. Bullying is one of the most uncertain and debatable definitions that needs further study. Systematic, regularly repeated violence (mostly psychological) is the main feature of bullying. Scientists D. Olveus, P. Randall, N. Duncanson and others have studied the problem of bullying. The article reveals the legal aspect of bullying, namely legal liability (administrative and criminal). The content of the Law of Ukraine “On Amendments to Certain Legislative Acts of Ukraine about Countering Bullying (Harassment)” of December 18, 2018 №2657-VIII and other regulations are analyzed. Methods to counter bullying such as the Farst, Link crew and the Finnish KiVa method are presented. Development of an action plan, aimed at preventing and combating bullying (harassment) in educational institutions, is among the ways of solution the problem. Thus, bullying is the worldwide problem. This problem is called socio-psychological which leads to destruction of the personal character. According to the authors, education from childhood is necessary. A person should know, already in his adolescence, that he can be prosecuted criminally or administratively for illegal actions. Bullying is violence, therefore science of law must be taught. This problem mustn`t be ignored because it could lead to irreparable consequences and ruin lives of many people. The authors note that it is impossible to eradicate bullying but it is possible to minimize such cases. Key words: bullying, participants of the educational process, violence, school aggression, preventing, offence.

Lo, On-ting, and 羅安庭. "Chinese character recognition : studies of complexity effect on recognition efficiency, spatial frequency characteristics, crowding and expertise." Thesis, The University of Hong Kong (Pokfulam, Hong Kong), 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10722/197116.

Full text
Abstract:
Chinese characters are used by about one-fifth of the world population. Each character can generally be analyzed and represented at three orthographic levels including single stroke, component and whole character. Regardless of the number of strokes a Chinese character has, it always occupies a square area. Such special spatial layout leads to a great variation in stroke density, i.e., visual complexity, among Chinese characters. Here in this thesis, the effects of visual complexity on Chinese character recognition were examined to investigate the visual processing of Chinese characters in both central and peripheral vision. Empirical findings from four psychophysical studies will be reported. First, the efficiency of detecting and recognizing Chinese characters of different complexity levels was studied. Human recognition of a more complex Chinese character was found to be generally less efficient than that of a simpler one. The relationship between efficiency and complexity had a log-log slope of approximately -1, suggesting that the basic features for recognizing a single Chinese character might be less complex than the simplest object used, which is a single stroke. Analysis results of the detection and recognition efficiency were consistent with a two-stage processing model of Chinese character recognition—feature detection followed by feature integration. Results in peripheral vision suggested that the feature integration process was adversely influenced by internal crowding. Second, the spatial frequency characteristics of recognizing Chinese characters of different complexity levels were examined. The results showed that the peak tuning frequency for recognizing a more complex Chinese character was higher and the bandwidth of the spatial tuning functions was narrower than for recognizing a simpler character. In addition, the effects of size on such spatial frequency characteristics depended on the complexity level. The comparison of human performance against the corresponding performance of a CSF-limited ideal observer model implied that the processing mechanism of recognizing simple and complex characters was different. Moreover, similar results were observed among native Chinese and non-Chinese readers, suggesting that expertise might not influence front end processing properties such as the spatial frequency characteristics of Chinese character recognition. Third, the importance of utilizing spatial frequency information of different orientations (i.e., horizontal versus vertical) in Chinese character recognition was investigated. Results showed higher efficiency in utilizing vertical than horizontal stroke information for Chinese character recognition among native Chinese readers whereas non-Chinese readers used both vertical and horizontal stroke information similarly. Fourth, the effects of the target-flanker similarity in complexity on crowding in Chinese character recognition were examined. The results suggested that the behavior of feature integration process in peripheral vision might be consistent with summation theory, which stresses on the relationship between the processing capacity of neurons and the processing demand of stimuli. The “excessive feature integration explanation” of crowding was also discussed in the context of the current findings. Building on previous research in the literature, results from the four studies in this thesis were synthesized in a proposal of a visual information processing model for Chinese character recognition.

Abstract:
This thesis identifies and explores the types of communication modes that exist in video games. Different types of communication are identified and discussed based on Frye's audience centered theory of modes. The inferior communication mode, the mimetic communication mode, the leader-centered communication mode, the romantic communication mode, and the mythical communication mode are all explained. A convenience sample of six video game players were interviewed about video games. An analysis of their self-identification statements revealed that players seek a high level of romantic communication when playing video games. The romantic communication mode makes the video game world an idealized place where the players are able to manipulate their circumstances or show more intelligence than the user in reality. Uses of the communication modes are also explained.

Abstract:
Holistic processing and left-side bias are both behavioral markers of expert face recognition. In contrast, expertise in Chinese character recognition involves left-side bias but reduced holistic processing (Hsiao & Cottrell, 2009). Here I hypothesized that this reduction in holistic processing may be related to writing rather than reading experience. In Experiment 1, I tested Chinese literates who could read and write Chinese characters fluently (Writers), and Chinese literates who had limited writing practices and thus had reading performance far exceeding their writing ability (Limited-writers). I found that Writers perceived Chinese characters less holistically than Limited-writers. In contrast to what previous research suggested, reduction in holistic processing in Chinese readers depended on writing experience instead of reading performance. In addition, reading performance was affected by font familiarity and context for Limited-writers but not Writers. Writing experience seems to enhance analytic processing and awareness of orthographic components of Chinese characters, which may in turn facilitate reading in unfamiliar fonts. By contrast, both Writers and Limited-writers showed a similar level of left-side bias in processing symmetric Chinese characters, suggesting that left-side bias is a consistent expertise marker for orthographic processing uninfluenced by writing experience. In Experiment 2, I investigate the developmental trend of holistic processing in Chinese character recognition and its relationship with reading and writing abilities by testing Chinese children who were learning Chinese at a public elementary school in Hong Kong on these abilities. I found that the holistic processing effect of Chinese characters in children was reduced as they reached higher grades; this reduction was driven by enhanced Chinese literacy rather than age. In addition, I found that writing performance predicts reading performance through reduced holistic processing as a mediator. Overall, the results of this study suggest that writing hones analytic processing, which is essential for expert Chinese character recognition, and in turn facilitates learning to read in Chinese. This study is also the first to identify Limited-writers as a window onto basic processes of reading.

Melia, Francine. "The self at play? : a case study of reification and dereification in the play environment of American college theatre." Virtual Press, 2008. http://liblink.bsu.edu/uhtbin/catkey/1397643.

Full text
Abstract:
This case study aims to better understand the process through which a college theatre actor creates and presents a dereified reified "self' (the character(s) they are portraying) in a play environment, and to consider to what extent this process is conscious. In essence, the actor attempts to take nothing for granted, taking apart and examining assumptions and their cultural context. This study posits that the actor is consciously aware of and is able to recognize and manipulate culture to construct a "self' (the character) within a "play universe." This study is unique as it focuses on the actors themselves as the agents of reification as well as dereification as their processes intersect with the director, the script, and eventually the audience. This study also considers the influence of play theory on developing and breaking the "rules" of the created cultural world of the stage play by utilizing the anthropological research methods supplemented with an analysis of the personal journals of cast members. The subject population is a cast of college-age students (18-28 years old), both males (9) and females (8), from Ball State University's Theatre and Dance Department who participated in the fall 2007 production of The Human Faustus Project, directed by Jennifer Blackmer.

Abstract:
Why do people tell stories? Whether it be the oft repeated, endlessly varied fairy tales passed from one generation to the next, the carefully patterned and strictly worded epics of the ancients or tall-tales told around the kitchen table, people have been telling stories to themselves or others since the day someone uttered the first words ever heard on this planet. In the following essay story-telling is called narrativity and is discussed as a function of the desire to impose meaning on experience. The six stories of Drawing the Reader In are about story-telling and how people fail or succeed as story-tellers. Neither can be said to fully answer the question above, rather they elaborate on the possibilities of there being an answer.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to build theory about parasocial relationships and to examine what affect, if any, religion had on parasocial relationships. Using qualitative methods, the researcher watched the show three times with five women followed by an in-depth interview. The women chosen were LDS stay-at-home moms who had watched a soap opera for at least a year. From this data came several surprising findings about religion and soap opera viewing. The women said they did not feel guilty about the content of the shows, rather the time required to watch. This guilt was alleviated by structuring their daily tasks around watching the shows. Also, since the women viewed the show as entertainment, they were less likely to judge the actions of the characters as harshly as if it were real-life. Current life situation was also the biggest factor in whether or not a parasocial relationship existed and how strong that relationship is. This thesis illustrates the need for a comprehensive theory about parasocial relationships. As the media becomes more prominent in our lives, parasocial relationships will need to become understood in greater detail in order to understand what possible effect, if any, they could have.

Abstract:
In this address to probation officers or trainee probation officers, Winnicott discusses moral, legal and psychological responses to anti-social behaviour, and what they mean for treatment. He concludes that the probation officer has to be prepared to keep his own desires out and concentrate on the child offender instead. Probation workers are unpopular, especially with the police, because in examining the roots of anti-social behaviour we identify with the criminal. Habitual offenders cannot usually be helped, although character disturbance can be helped if found early. Winnicott advises that if steady development can be provided, the potential delinquent may make use of a second chance.

Abstract:
This chapter describes some of the principal physical aspects of California in relation to the life and civilization of the region. The task is at once comparatively simple and hopelessly complex. The topography of the Pacific slope is in certain of its principal features extremely easy to characterize. However, closer study shows how difficult it is to understand the relation of precisely such features to the life that has grown up in this region. The principal interest of the task lies in the fact that it is the American character and civilization which have been already molded in new ways by these novel aspects of the far western regions. In endeavoring to distinguish between what has resulted from physical conditions and what has been due to personal character, deliberate choice, general national temperament, or pure accident, one is dealing with a task for which the data are insufficient.

The environmental consequences that law seeks to manage operate through and affect the nonhuman animals, plants, geography, and processes that make up much of human surroundings. This chapter argues that psychology can help inform people’s perceptions of, understanding of, and response to the nonhuman aspects of environmental harm. The nonhuman character of many environmental impacts triggers a distinctive set of psychological phenomena, including those related to valuation, empathy, attention, natural versus manmade risks, and anthropocentrism.

Current demographic development requires appropriate care (informal/formal) for falls prevention in the growing older population across different settings as well as in the community. The development of new knowledge and research must be echoed in education and training of healthcare staff and also in the society. There is an urgent need to develop an interdisciplinary and interprofessional Master of Gerontology (“Master of Active and Healthy Aging”), which brings together research and practice. The innovative character of the program should be highlighted by the holistic perspective, incorporating courses in medical, nursing, rehabilitation, social, behavioral, psychological, economic, physiological, and management service aspects related to aging. A strong focus should be on active aging as well as the empowerment of self-care and (care) independency leading to falls prevention. In fall prevention work, new educational structures to teach and develop the workways across the Europe is needed.

Abstract:
The field of positive psychology and psychiatry has the goal of helping people to achieve greater happiness, fostering the factors that allow individuals, communities, and societies to thrive. It proposes a hierarchy of positive psychological character strengths, composed of 24 specific human qualities, including spirituality. Spiritually oriented well-being therapies are a promising and much-needed field. The bio-psycho-social model, developed by Cloninger and colleagues, is an empirically based model that considers the importance of spirituality in the human constitution and development, providing a systematic way to promote health as an integrated state, rather than merely the absence of disease or infirmity. Personality development depends on the creative process of integration through three complex adaptive systems of learning and memory, involving associative conditioning of habits, intentional self-control, and creative processes of self-awareness. The physical, mental, and spiritual aspects are interdependent, and must be addressed jointly aiming at a healthy, happy, and good life.

Abstract:
Chapter four explores how the symptoms of war trauma have been transferred onto Chandler’s protagonist Philip Marlowe. Marlowe’s character traits will be closely examined by considering certain notable features such as the detective’s origins, characterization, disillusionment and his chivalric code of honour. Like Chandler, it becomes possible to identify the small but distinctive aspects of Marlowe’s character that suggest that he was a psychologically damaged war veteran fighting new battles on a different front.

In this physics/psychology related integrative project, gravitation acting on the elevator riders is discussed in psychological terms. It may be interesting to portray some characters and convey their emotional states and actions in this unusual situation. Science-based themes that serve as inspiration for this project refer to the physical concepts of gravitation as a natural force causing objects with mass to attract one another, acceleration due to gravity, and the potential energy of the stuck elevator. This project is also about an artistic interpretation of psychological and social aspects of the unusual and stressful circumstances.

Abstract:
Character strengths are universal traits that are valued in their own right and do not necessarily lead to instrumental outcomes. Throughout the course of positive psychotherapy, the clinician actively looks for events, experiences, and expressions of strengths in the lives of clients. These may manifest through abilities, skills, talents, capacities, and aptitudes that can be nurtured in order to cope with and potentially buffer against psychological disorders. The most critical aspect of a strengths-based therapeutic approach is a contextualized use of strengths, which keeps presenting problems and symptoms front and center. Strengths can be assessed early in the therapeutic process. Systematic assessment of character strengths, in addition to symptoms, will enrich clinical understanding.

Abstract:
In five early texted works—“The Widow’s Lament in Springtime,” Du, Two Sonnets, Vision and Prayer, and Philomel—Babbitt uses a variety of means to project both poetic form and the psychological life of the characters represented. Trichordal derivation is used to model metaphors of reference, dependency, and layers of psychological action. Divergences between voice and accompaniment can also create layers of agency and implication. In several instances, Babbitt’s desire to reflect the meaning of texts leads him to musical structures that depart from the practice and principles he develops in his instrumental work. Moreover, in all five of these pieces, poetic form—the sonic, syntactic, and visual aspects of poetry—is projected in numerous ways; this is shown to derive from Babbitt’s youthful career in musical theater. Some ways involve the coordination of serial and poetic articulation, and some involve non-serial musical dimensions.

Susato, Ryu. "‘The Empire of the Imagination’: The Association of Ideas in Hume’s Social Philosophy." In Hume's Sceptical Enlightenment. Edinburgh University Press, 2015. http://dx.doi.org/10.3366/edinburgh/9780748699803.003.0002.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter deals with the philosophical foundations of Hume’s social and political philosophy. Hume scholars have discussed his theory of association of ideas as a purely philosophical one. As many eighteenth-century critics were acutely aware, however, this theory must been considered an aspect of Epicureanism; one which allegedly undermines the spiritual aspect of human reason and virtues by transforming them into the mere consequences of habit and custom. What differentiates Hume’s associationist theory from more materialistic versions lies in the former’s emphasis on the psychological (not physiological) explanation of the workings of imagination. This is closely related to his defence of moral causes and his criticism of natural causes in the essay ‘Of National Characters’, which was to influence William Godwin. Although Duncan Forbes claims that Hume lost interest in his associationist theory after the Treatise, Hume in fact maintained a strong interest in this theory throughout his writings because the workings of imagination were the keystone for Hume in his continual investigations of the cultural diversity of human institutions.

Full text
Abstract:
"Mind-body integration is a key element for a successful dance movement therapy (DMT). As the connection between mind and body is reconnected, the clients can not only express but also improve their mental state through body movement. The integration of mind and body can be viewed from to aspects, namely the first-person experience and the third-person phenomenon, both of which play a crucial role in the therapeutic process of DMT. The first-person experience transcends the mind’s neurobiological phenomenon, which is relatively more important for the clients, while the third-person observation is based on the body’s reflection of mind, often adopted by the therapists. The relationship between mind and body can be validated by the mirror neuron theory, which is one of the theoretical proofs and inspirations of DMT. Unlike the notion of mind-body differentiation in western classical philosophy, ancient Chinese thoughts had not separated them. The Chinese character “shen” is considered as the whole of flesh and soul. The abundant Chinese thoughts concerning mind-body theory can be considered as a suitable route of the exploration of mind-body integration."
