Abstract:
One of the biometric methods in authentication systems is the writer verification/identification using password handwriting. The main objective of this paper is to present a robust writer verification system by using cursive texts as well as block letter words. To evaluate the system, two datasets have been used. One of them is called Secure Password DB 150, which is composed of 150 users with 18 samples of single character words per user. Another dataset is public and called IAM online handwriting database, and it is composed of 220 users of cursive text samples. Each sample has been defined by a set of features, composed of 67 geometrical, statistical, and temporal features. In order to get more discriminative information, two feature reduction methods have been applied, Fisher Score and Info Gain Attribute Evaluation. Finally, the classification system has been implemented by hold-out cross validation and k-folds cross validation strategies for three different classifiers, K-NN, Naïve Bayes and Bayes Net classifiers. Besides, it has been applied for verification and identification approaches. The best results of 95.38% correct classification are achieved by using the k-nearest neighbor classifier for single character DB. A feature reduction by Info Gain Attribute Evaluation improves the results for Naïve Bayes Classifier to 98.34% for IAM online handwriting DB. It is concluded that the set of features and its reduction are a strong selection for the based-password handwritten writer identification in comparison with the state-of-the-art.

Abstract:
Text-independent Chinese writer identification does not depend on the text content of the query and reference handwritings. In order to deal with the uncertainty of the text content, text-independent approaches usually give special attention to the global writing style of handwriting, rather than the properties of each individual character or word. Thanks to the existence of high-frequency characters, some characters probably appear in both the query and reference handwritings in most cases. If character images in the query handwriting are similar to those in the reference handwriting, this query handwriting and the corresponding reference handwriting are very likely to be written by the identical writer. In this paper, we exploit the above characteristic to improve the performance of Chinese writer identification. We first present an identification scheme using edge co-occurrence feature (ECF). Then, we detect the character pairs in the query and reference handwritings using a two-step framework and propose the displacement field-based similarity (DFS) to determine whether a character pair is written by the identical writer. The character pairs help to re-rank the candidate list obtained by text-independent ECF-based similarity and finally decide the writer of the query handwriting. The proposed method is evaluated on the HIT-MW and CASIA-2.1 datasets. Experimental results demonstrate that our proposed method outperforms the existing ones, and its Top-1 accuracy on the two datasets reaches 97.1% and 98.3%, respectively.

Abstract:
Given the recurrence of the creation of characters as writers in Brazilian fiction works published since the 1990s, it was chosen the Daniel Galeras production as a case study. With resonances that can be noted in some theorists as Roland Barthes (2004), Michel Foucault (2006, 1996), Umberto Eco (2005, 2003, 2004, 2001, 1986), Stanley Fish (2003, 1990) and Linda Hutcheon (2000; 1991; 1984), the post-modern distrust in meaning and the conviction that what a literary work means not only does not depend on the author but also finds in him an obstacle to the reader’s creativity are widely disseminated notions that have found their place in the metafiction theory by means of Hutcheon (1991; 1984), and Patrícia Waugh (1984). However, in this thesis, based on the assumptions of the hermeneutic realism theory, an interpretive approach according to which the meaning of a text is prior to its reading and is in many respects does not dependent on it, I propose to review the role of the author in metafictional novels, searching for appropriate readings for such novels. My theory is that author and writer are separate entities and that, among the four sources of enunciation of a novel (writer, author, narrator and character), the author is the one responsible for opening the work, activating the reading and actualizing the metafictionality. By means of a dialogue with theorists from several fields of the human sciences, I seek to defend the author from his opponents and show that, in the relationships he establishes with the character in novels of protagonist writer (as in A Rainha dos cárceres da Grécia, Bufo & Spallanzani and O Chalaça), the metafictional author addresses us, making communicative calls to us, and calling our attention to the fictionality of the text. So, what I do in this thesis is to show that since the attacks to the notions of person, intention and interpretive authoritarianism may even relate to the writer , but never to the author, he cannot and should not be killed. The author, I seek to prove, is a constitutive element of fictional language and is also the other with whom we communicate in reading metafictional novels. The result is that our interaction with such aesthetic person is essential in order that, through the distinction of the voices of the writer, narrator and character, we may be able to read these novels without making problematic interpretations.

Abstract:
This work wants to look for two main characteristics of the brazilians contemporary literature: profusion of written of the self and the recurrence of writer-character in the romanesque production. In that case, makes the relationship with his own son Down's syndrome the base material of a romance means engage the ways of autobiographical genres, establishing a new paradigm autobiographical between his previous works, since until then any space for approach of referential elements had been opened. Thus, what is at stake is the fictionalization of I front of literary creation. In another moment, we have established a discussion on inserting the writer-character in tezziana writing, widely used resource by author in various fictional works, investigating the reasons and implications of this recurrence. To undertake such analysis, we resort to notions of metafiction and literary gesture. Since the thematization of the intimate universe of the writer in the fictional ball highlights evidence the act of write and its inquisitive character. Last but not least, do a comparative reading between romance of hue biographical O filho eterno e O espírito da prosa, once the autobiography works as a key at the front desk of the fictional narrative

Abstract:
This dissertation presents a reading of J. M. Coetzees so-called Australian fiction comprising the works Elizabeth Costello (2003), Slow Man (2005), and Diary of a Bad Year (2007). These novels, belonging to the authors late prose, share core aesthetic and ethical issues. They are meaningful works characterized by self-reflexive inflection. This study follows Elizabeth Costello and Señor C in their writer-characters constitution and journey to discuss how the presence of the writers double, as literary device, destabilizes the notions of author, character, and narrator, as well as it blurs the boundaries between fiction and non-fiction. The dramatization of the creative process in the center of Coetzees works is another focus of analysis aiming to understand the impossibility of staging the novel in formal realism patterns. This work also attempts to suggest Coetzees response on the validity of the novel in the contemporary world.

Abstract:
The Italian production company Pasquali e Compagnia adapts the French writer Gustave Flaubert’s 1862 novel Salammbô into a ‘$100,000 Spectacle’. Despite the grandiose production values, a leading character named Spendius is not identified in the film’s credits. The record of Spendius on film, literally ‘pellicola’ or ‘with a skin’, continues to dissolve as compressed portions of the film reappear as pixels on YouTube. This paper analyses Spendius’ transnational character by situating him in an absent, yet present spectrum of media.
