Klebsiella pneumoniae is a common cause of nosocomial and community-acquired infections, and the increasing incidence and prevalence of antibiotic resistant strains is proving to be particularly problematic to clinicians. The carbapenem antibiotics are usually reserved for the treatment of complicated or multidrug resistant (MDR) K. pneumoniae infections. It is originally considered an opportunistic pathogen that causes hospital-acquired infections. Reports of community-acquired infection caused by virulent K. pneumoniae strains were increasing worldwide. K. pneumoniae can be classified into about 80 K-types based on the capsular polysaccharide (CPS). Among these, K1 and K2 are the dominant K-types in Taiwan and were reported in invasive infections such as pyogenic liver abscesses. Previously we have identified a

The clinical manifestations of K. pneumoniae infection acquired from hospital or community vary in different time periods and geographical areas. Besides its classic manifestation as pneumonia and urinary tract infection, K. pneumoniae is emerging worldwide as a major cause of bacteremia and drug-resistant infection. To assess the role of pLVPK in K. pneumoniae pathgogenesis, the prevalence of large plasmids in 127 K. pneumoniae isolates of various origins was analyzed. Consistent with the previous findings indicating that many clinical isolates harbor large plasmids of 200 kb in size, the analysis revealed 56.69% (72/127) prevalence of large plasmids. Urease produced by bacteria decompose urea to produce ammonia, which neutralize the gastric acid produced by the host. As a consequence, this may enhance its intestinal colonization. Klebsiella pneumoniae is generally considered positive in urease activity test. We analyzed the genomic sequences of Klebsiella pneumoniae 1084 and Klebsiella pneumoniae 1158, two K1 and K2 clinical isolates previously sequenced by our group, and found two different putative urease gene

After that, the clone library is sequenced by Sanger method and the resulting reads were assembled computationally based on overlapping information.
