Abstract:
Spina bifida is a defect in which the vertebral arch of the spinal column is either incompletely formed or absent. Failure of closure of the neural tube during the third week of gestation leads to the constellation of defects observed in patients with meningomyelocele or open spina bifida. Myelomeningocele is the most common neural tube defect and the most severe birth defect compatible with long-term survival. It is associated with several characteristic central nervous system anomalies. Leak of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) is commonly observed. The major indication for early operative repair (w

Abstract:
Despite remarkable progress in understanding the pathological processes and alleviating symptoms by TNFα‎ blocking medication, the mechanism that converts flexible tissue into bone still cannot be completely prevented or reversed. In axial spondyloarthritis, components of motion segments, such as zygoapophyseal joints, intervertebral discs, and spinal ligaments, can ossify in varying sequence, extent, and location between the ilium and occiput. Throughout this process, the spinal column is vulnerable to kyphotic deformity due to gravity, body weight, muscle action, and life’s flexion-based act

Abstract:
This chapter examines the preoperative and operative considerations that should influence the management of neoplasms affecting the spinal column. The three broad categories of spinal tumors (extradural, intradural extramedullary, and intramedullary) are described. The patient and tumor subtype factors that can create challenges in the treatment of these patients are discussed. This chapter also covers scoring systems that can help physicians in counseling and management of patients diagnosed with tumors affecting the spinal column. A multidisciplinary approach should be used to ensure that pa

Abstract:
Spinal cord stimulation (SCS) has been a long established therapy for various pain conditions including low back pain, failed back surgery syndrome, complex regional pain syndrome, and other neuropathic and nociceptive pain states. Since the first report of SCS in 1967 by Shealy, advances have occurred in the technology used to achieve clinical analgesia. Developments in both the hardware and software involved have led to significant improvements in functional specificity, as seen in dorsal root ganglion stimulation, along with increasing breadth and depth of the field of neuromodulation.
