Taheri, Saeedeh. "Cognitive stylistics approach to cinematic characterization." Thesis, University of Sussex, 2018. http://sro.sussex.ac.uk/id/eprint/79240/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis deals with the cognitive process of cinematic character construal and explores the question of how narrative film viewers presumably understand characters and make impressions about them as a result of the interplay of different types of schema. Based on the cognitive concept of schema (Barlett [1932] 1995), Speech Act Theory (Austin, 1962; Searle, 1969) and cognitivist film theory (Bordwell,1985), a cognitive framework, which is inscribed within the cognitive stylistics theories and analytical frameworks, is proposed for character impression formation. The model posits that viewers understand characters in terms of the interactions between three planes of background knowledge: 1. Social knowledge (knowledge of real-life people, social roles, and interpersonal relations), 2. Narrative film knowledge (knowledge of film narrative, style and techniques), 3. Pragmalinguistic knowledge (knowledge of linguistic and pragmatic norms. The focus of the linguistic plane is on Speech Act Theory). This research argues that film draws on medium-specific, multimodal devices to tell the story and create characters. With regard to the multimodality of film discourse, this thesis suggests a toolkit for character creation and comprehension. The three planes of social, film and pragmalinguistic schemas and also the marked aspects of the suggested cinematic character creation toolkit are all applied to three art auteur films: The Piano Teacher (2001), Autumn Sonata (1987), and Ten (2001), whose comprehension is challenging for viewers Pragmalinguistic because of their deviations from the conventional norms of Hollywood cinema in terms of narrative, characterization, cinematic style and techniques. Methodologically, this analysis is informed by multimodal analysis (Kress and van Leeuwen, 1996), and multimodal transcription (Baldry and Thibault, 2006) in particular, which consider text as an ensemble of different communication modes all of which contribute to meaningmaking. Thus, this analysis presents a detailed account of viewers' plausible understanding trajectory, and an explanation of linguistic and visual/cinematic strategies to narrative (as the context in which characters are created and developed), and particularly character creation within the scope of the films mentioned above.

Abstract:
This investigation is about characterization in the Fourth Gospel as it relates to the "disciple"---the mysterious, anonymous figure that pervades the structure of allusions in this narrative. The question as to who this character is and what s/he does in this gospel text has both attracted and intrigued generations of biblical scholars.
The first part of the investigation examines divergent views of premodern, modern and reader-oriented criticism with regard to the "disciple's" identity and function, highlighting the respectively allegorical, historical and reader-oriented understanding of his/her character as proposed by these three critical approaches.
The second part of the investigation re-examines the question with a novel approach. The approach involves a detailed analysis of the structure of allusions. This analysis concludes that the allusions constitute a set of interactive linguistic phenomena which are meant to shed light on the anonymous figure within them. On the basis of this finding, the investigation proposes a new understanding of the structure of allusions and of the question of identity and function that it raises.

Abstract:
Characters have long been studied as narratological element and how they function in relation to their plots. Characters are also studied on basis of their actions, trans-medial aspects, archetypes, knowledge, their interrelation to each other and they are also studied how the readers relate to them. In my essay, I will explore how the character’s distinctive quality from other characters creates polarity between the characters and also, their relations to each other helps to define identity construction of a character. To demonstrate my argument, I will study the characters in two mediums that are the graphic novel American Born Chinese and the film Ghost World. The essay will first describe the assigned traits to each character, how they differ from each other and how their interrelation within characters helps to construct character’s identity in the narrative. Both the film and the graphic novel have in common their coming-of-age narrative which is be used to study different characters and their contribution in development of protagonist’s identity. In addition to that, the essay will further explore the visual narrative of both medium to see how panels aid the identity construction of the characters.

Rananga, Lutendo Evelyn. "Synthesis, characters and application of silver-doped cabon Nanotubes and nanoporous polymers for purification of water samples." Thesis, University of Limpopo (Turfloop Campus), 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10386/1423.

Full text
Abstract:
Thesis (MSc. (Chemistry)) -- University of Limpopo, 2013
Drinkable water is water that is safe enough to be consumed by humans or used with low risk of immediate or long term harm. World-wide, insufficient access to portable water and use of sources contaminated with disease vectors, pathogens, and unacceptable levels of toxins is a huge problem. The use of such water for drinking and food preparation leads to the widespread of acute and chronic illnesses. This is a major cause of death and misery in many undeveloped countries. Reduction of waterborne diseases is a major public health goal in developing countries. Nanotechnology offers the possibility of an efficient removal of pollutants and microorganisms from water. Essentially, three classes of nanoscale materials were investigated as functional materials for water purification in this study. Silver nanoparticles, carbon nanotubes and beta ()-cyclodextrin polymers were synthesised and characterised specifically for purification of water samples. β-cyclodextrin is soluble in both water and other aqueous media. In order to render cyclodextrins insoluble, they were converted into highly cross-linked polymers, by polymerisation with a bifunctional linker, hexamethylene diisocyanate. Cyclodextrins were functionalised and synthesised with either the allyl or the benzoyl group. Characterisation with fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectrophotometer confirmed the functionalisation process. Thereafter the scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis confirmed the polymers’ morphology to be spongy, and capable of absorbing contaminants. Multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were treated with a mixture of sulphuric and nitric acid in order to introduce the carboxyl and hydroxyl groups. These were characterised by SEM, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and FTIR spectroscopy to confirm the functionalisation process. Silver nanoparticles were synthesised from sodium citrate and silver nitrate, using sodium dodecyl sulphate as a surfactant. Their characterisation was done by SEM, energy dispersive X ray (EDX) spectroscopy, TEM, UV/Vis spectroscopy and XRD to confirm a face centred cubic structure with an estimated crystallite size ranging from 50 to 100 nm.β-cyclodextrin polymers, functionalised multi-walled carbon nanotubes and silver nanoparticle-doped MWCNTs/cyclodextrin composites were characterised by SEM, TEM, XRD, Brunauer-Emmet-Teller (BET) and EDX. Analysis of the phenolic compound, 4-hydroxynitrobenzene in water, using these nanocomposites, demonstrated good capabilities of removing organic contaminants from water samples as indicated by their high absorption efficiencies of the contaminants. The synthesised metal-organic composites were tested for their effectiveness in removing organic contaminants as well as for eliminating Escherichia coli bacteria from water. The synthesised composites presented up to 97% absorption efficiency of organic contaminants and up to 100% inactivation of the bacteria. There was complete destruction of bacteria from the water analysed at various times and varying concentrations. After a long exposure of the nanocomposites to E. coli, pits were noticeable on the external morphology of the bacteria, thus suggesting that the nanocomposites are bactericidal. The bacterial activity increased with temperature, when studied between 10 oC and 30 oC.

Dokolwane, Kutala Primrose. "Characterization in selected Xhosa novels of the 90's." Thesis, Stellenbosch : Stellenbosch University, 2001. http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/52160.

Full text
Abstract:
Thesis (MA)--University of Stellenbosch, 2001.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This study examines the portrayal of characters in four Xhosa novels of the 1990s. The objective is to found out whether or not characterization in the Xhosa novels of the 1990s improves. This is done with the view that past studies of characterization done before 1990 by Jafta (1978; 1996), Satyo (1978), Sirayi (1989) and Dlali (1992) gave the picture that a high percentage of writers portray characters as archetypes because of thematic concerns. This often renders characterization poor in the sense that the reader is able to predict the outcome of events through the actions of the characters. However, Zulu (1999:3) argues that with the inceptor of democracy in South Africa in 1994, African Languages literature was liberated as well from several constraints, and reveals some signs of maturing. This study is thus conducted to confirm or refute Zulu's (1999) claim that there are signs of improvement in the way writers portray characters. The study concentrates of four selected Xhosa novels published in the 1990s. The novels are selected on the criteria that they have won literary prizes and are written by prolific writers. It is found that in all four novels, Iqlina lomtshato, Kazi Ndenzeni na?, Koda Kube Nni na? and Ukhozi Olumaphiko the novelists have succeededin creating realistic, live, dynamic, complex and multidimensional characters. The change and development of characters are influenced by environmental change as a result of social, political and economic factors. However, the study also shows that some events in Ukhozi Olumphiko are implausible.
INTSHWANKATHELO ISIXHOSA: Lo msebenzi uphonononga ukuvezwa kwabalinganiswa kwiinoveli zesiXhosa ezine ezibhalwe ukususela kumnyaka ka-1990 ukuya ku-1999. Injongo yalo msebenzi kukuqwalasela ukuba ikho kusini na impucuko kwindlela abazotywa ngayo abalinganiswa kwezi noveli zesiXhosa zibhalwe ngomnyaka ka-1990 ukubheka phambili. Lo msebenzi ke uza kuqwalasela kwiinoveli zesiXhosa ezine ezikhethiweyo nezishicilelwe kwisithuba sika-1990 ukubheka phambili. Ezi noveli zikhethwe phantsi komgomo wokuba ziphumelele amabhaso oncwadi yaye zibhalwe ngoomakhwekhwetha bababhali abavunyiweyo. Kuye kwafunyaniswa into yokuba kwezi noveli zone, Iqhina lomtshato, Kazi Ndenzeni na?, Koda Kube Nini na?, kunye noKhozi Olumaphiko ababhali beenoveli baphumelele ekwakheni abalinganiswa ababonisa izinto ngobunjalo bazo, abaphilayo, abanentshukumo, abantsonkothileyo nabambaxa. Chishty-Mujahid, Nadya Qamar. ""Coloured with an historicall fiction" : the topical and moral import of characterization in Edmund Spenser's Faerie Queene." Thesis, McGill University, 2001. http://digitool.Library.McGill.CA:80/R/?func=dbin-jump-full&object_id=38170.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation focuses on how a series of major characters in Edmund Spenser's Faerie Queene (Prince Arthur, Britomart, Duessa, Artegall, and those characters that figure forth the poet's sovereign, Elizabeth I) enhance a reader's appreciation of the epic's complex topical allegory and its moral implications. By closely interpreting the respective functions and narratives of these characters, and additionally examining some of Spenser's main techniques of character development, I propose that the above figures both articulate and underscore central aspects of the poet's politically encomiastic and critical agendas. These specific techniques of character development include composition, fragmentation, and metamorphosis (both positive, as in the case of Britomart, as well as pejorative, such as in the case of the wicked enchantress Duessa). By thus investigating the topical import of The Faerie Queene 's allegory, I further demonstrate both how the epic's major characters illustrate contemporary Elizabethan moral and political ideals and, in certain cases, exemplify serious perceived threats to those ideals. The dissertation also indicates that the poet consistently and cautiously treads a fine line between allegorically depicting controversial historical issues and events (towards which at least some Elizabethans were ambivalent), and praising Elizabeth and her successful governing abilities. This crucial tension, reflected in the epic's diverse plots, invests the topical aspects of the poem with much of their complexity. Yet, given that Spenser's main aims included portraying his queen as a model monarch, while simultaneously enhancing concepts of English nationhood, his criticisms of her government and policies remain tentative. Loyalty to the Tudor sovereign and to the predominant Protestant faith in England are fundamental to the epic, for the poet assumes they provide his audience with an essential foundation for personal moral "self-fashioning." Gous, Joané Facqueline. "Paul Auster's representation of invisible characters in selected novels." Thesis, North-West University, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10394/9028.

Abstract:
In this dissertation I argue that invisible characters, as they appear in Paul Auster’s novels, serve a very specific function within the interpretative framework of a text and that they should be considered to play a functional role, in order to arrive at a more holistic interpretation of the text and a more accurate analysis of said texts. I argue that Auster knowingly includes these characters in his novels as part of his narrative technique, in order for them to serve specific functions and to contribute to the structure of postmodern fiction. I make use of a contextualized close reading of five of Auster’s novels and attempt a hermeneutic interpretation of these novels to arrive at a hermeneutic circle when combining these novels into an integrated whole, individual, work of fiction. Certain parallels can be drawn between Auster’s various novels and these parallels contribute to the various motifs and themes found throughout his work. The importance of space in Auster’s novels is also highlighted with emphasis on liminality which serves as an instigator for transgression to occur between different fictive worlds.
Thesis (MA (English))--North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2013.

Abstract: The novel Lavoura Arcaica, by Raduan Nassar, is a rich object to think the referential character of the personages. The father, embodying a tradition that says how worthy is work, the restraint as values essential to life, finds strong resistance in Ana and André. Thus, the conflict that emerges reflects a classic clash between tradition and freedom. Such dispute is a result (and wick) for acts taken as monstrosity: incest and filicide. Going beyond the procedure of characterization of the personages as an analysis resource of the novel, this paper is concerned about discussing the practice of actions capable of "monsterizing" personages. Therefore, this research mentions the peculiarities that make someone to be seen as being horrifying. This research also deals with the notion of extreme concatenation of the on-the-edge situations such as a building element of the idiosyncrasies. With that, the way the personages treat the time, each other in this family and some laws provides subsidy so they can be seen as "moral threats". The incest and filicide altogether, thus, appear as a key element in the analysis of the personages
Mestrado
Literatura Brasileira
Mestre em Teoria e História Literária

Abstract:
This study analyzed the personalities and actions of Regina, Birdie, Alexandra, and Lavinia from Lillian Hellman's The Little Foxes and Another Part of the Forest. The analysis was focused on the relationship between the life and personality of Lillian Hellman and each of the characters. The method of character analysis that was used was that described by David Grote in Script Analysis, but the effect of cultural history on the characters and on Lillian Hellman was examined as well. It was discovered that Lillian Hellman had infused the characters with many aspects her own personality. In the case of Regina and Lavinia, Hellman also used the characterizations to sort out her mixed feelings toward her parents.

Abstract:
This study is an analysis of images of Chinese women in five of Pearl S. Buck's novels: East Wind: West Wind, The Good Earth, The Mother, Pavilion of Women, and Peony. Buck's female characters, with their different degrees of individuality and typicality, form a realistic picture of Chinese women. In terms of thematic content, the study shows that all Buck's female characters use their limited power within the constraints of their society to achieve what they deserve, often employing different, covert ways, some manipulation, and even a little deception. The significance of this is that it reveals, in an artistic way, the social conditions under which Chinese women at Buck's times lived. Chinese women had been very much oppressed. In order to survive, they had to act in ways acceptable by their society. However, they had, just as their male counterparts, the desire to love, to be happy, to maintain dignity, and to be free. What is more important, they were intelligent, courageous, and capable of fighting to achieve their goals for themselves.Buck portrays her female characters both as typical of Chinese women in general and as strong individual figures, each facing different conflicts, in a variety of social, familial situations, with unique characteristics. In order for the Western readers to understand the cultural content in which the individuals function, Buck gives her Chinese characters enough typicality as a solid foundation for the Westerners to interpret their behaviors. It is not difficult for the reader to see how the Confucian doctrines and the social conditions concerning Chinese women are truthfully reflected in the novels herein analyzed. Therefore, different degrees of individualization of these characters result from differing themes of the novels in which they appear.
Department of English

Being at a stage where they are still in the formation of personality, television and its content take a significant role in the formation of adolescents. The main objective of this research is to analyze the representation of adolescent female characters in Peruvian soap operas and identify the changes and continuities that exist between the characters. For this case, the novels Torbellino (1997), Besos Robados (2004) and Ven, Baila Quinceañera (2015) have been taken. Within this we will also see how these characters are represented, what is their construction and the changes and continuities between these soap operas. This research is qualitative in nature, for which a data collection instrument will be used: a content analysis guide based on the theories of Flores and Sánchez (2008) and Raya, Sánchez and Durán (2018). With this research we want to demonstrate the stereotypes that these soap operas can present and that can be part of the formation of adolescents.
Trabajo de investigación

Van, Essen-Fishman Lucy. "Character through interaction : Sophocles and the delineation of the individual." Thesis, University of Oxford, 2014. http://ora.ox.ac.uk/objects/uuid:c23353ec-cc60-453e-8c58-b13d01840a19.

Abstract:
In this thesis, I argue that Sophoclean characters take shape through a number of different kinds of interaction. On the most basic level, interaction occurs between characters; interactions between characters, however, provide a framework for interactions between those characters and a variety of more abstract concepts. These interactions, by allowing characters to situate themselves with respect to concepts such as, for example, the social roles which shape the society of the play, provide a more complex picture of the personalities depicted onstage; a fuller view of Antigone’s personality, for example, emerges both from her own interactions with the concept of sisterhood and from the differences between her interactions with that concept and Ismene’s. At the same time, these interactions involve the audience in both the construction and the interpretation of Sophoclean characters; as they watch figures interact with each other onstage, the audience, in turn, interact with their own prior knowledge of the concepts which drive the characters of a play. In my five chapters, I discuss five different areas of interaction. In my first chapter, I look at interactions between characters and myth, arguing that Sophoclean characters emerge out of a tension between novelty and familiarity. In my second chapter, I discuss the interactions between characters and their social roles, looking at the problem of appropriate role performance as it applies to Sophoclean characters. My third chapter deals with characters and their memories; I argue that Sophoclean characters shape and are shaped by their memories of past events depending on shifting present circumstances. In my fourth chapter, I discuss the interactions between characters and the passage of time and suggest that Sophoclean figures are characterized by the ways in which they move through time and respond to its passage. In my final chapter, I look at the use of general statements by Sophoclean characters, arguing that the ability of characters to generalize successfully provides a useful measure of their ability to function in the world of the play.

Hall, S. G. L. "Conquering character : the characterization of Joshua in Joshua 1-11." Thesis, University of Cambridge, 2007. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.599850.

Full text
Abstract:
While recent Old Testament scholarship has seen a steady rise in the prominence of narrative approaches to the text, little work has been done on the book of Joshua from this perspective. This thesis offers a narrative treatment of Joshua 1-11, wherein the exodus is completed (1:1-5:12), the conquest begins (5:13-8:35), and the nations of Canaan respond to Israel’s presence (9:1-11:23). Specific attention is given to the characterization of Joshua in these accounts, and the method employed is eclectic, including poetic analysis, structural study, delimination criticism, comparative literary analysis, and intertextual reading. Joshua’s characterization has received inadequate scholarly attention to date, largely because he is generally seen as a pale character, a mere stereotype in the biblical history. This two-dimensional reading often leads to the conclusion that Joshua is actually mean to represent another character in the history. But this approach neglects the many aspects of Joshua’s character that are unique, and does not address the text’s presentation of his flaws, which include occasional affinity with the wilderness generation and implication in Israel’s diplomatic foolishness. On the other hand, a small number of scholars have recently suggested that Joshua’s character is significantly flawed. This reading is similarly untenable, as those features of Joshua’s leadership that it portrays as faulty – such as his use of espionage, his military initiative in the absence of divine command, his decision to spare the Rahabites and Gibenoites, and his punishment of Achan’s family – are in fact condoned, not condemned, by the text itself. The conquest narratives paint Joshua as a complex but reliable character, whose authority is established largely in relation to that of his predecessor, but whose leadership exhibits several distinctive features. To the degree that Joshua does function as a paradigm in the subsequent histories, this paradigm must be conceived more broadly than it has been in the past. Joshua’s leadership is sufficiently multi-faceted to defy simple categorization. He is not merely a royal, prophetic, or priestly figure, but exercises, and often exemplifiers, the many different types of leadership that feature in the former prophets.

Haglund, Vira. "Character Development and its Utilization for Convergent Media Formats." Thesis, Högskolan på Gotland, Institutionen för speldesign, teknik och lärande, 2012. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:hgo:diva-1848.

Abstract:
The thesis caters to the demands of the creative industries for products and contents which can be utilized for convergent media usage and cross-marketing strategies. In this regard character design serves as an important element of entertainment franchises since it is a means to produce media content with high recognition value. However, numerous character adaptations in different media formats illustrate that characters who are successful in one medium are not necessarily as successful in another media format. The thesis takes a closer look at characters in the context of media convergence and discusses the main principles of character creation and development. By favoring a heuristic approach which analyzes the aesthetic phenomena of arts and entertainment by the means of theoretical research which is supported by practical examples, the thesis concludes that character development is based on three dimensions which have to be combined in order to create characters which can be utilized for different media formats. In this context the work discusses character creation in writing, visuals and interactive media by focusing on ways which secure the successful transfer of characters into different media formats without a loss of character depth and quality.

Wahlsten, Christoffer. "”Run you bastards! I’m coming for you all!” : En narrativ och processretorisk analys av Tomb Raider." Thesis, Uppsala universitet, Avdelningen för retorik, 2016. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:uu:diva-296822.

Abstract:
The essay asks the question how characterization in video games is accomplished, with the subject of analysis being the video game Tomb Raider (2013). Wahlsten chooses to use the methodology of Sonja K Foss for the narrative analysis, in addition to Procedural Rhetoric coined by Ian Bogost. These two methodologies are used to map out the tools used to construct the narrative of the game, which includes interactive one as well as non-interactive ones. The essay clearly shows that there is a definite tension between the demands of the narrative on the player that puts into question the idea of interactive games mainly influencing through immersion. On the contrary, the game is constructed in such a way that the player is expected to identify with the playable character, while also motivating the player to distance itself from the character and use it as a sort of “virtual plaything”. Wahlsten thus highlights a fairly obscure but also highly interesting field of study within the Rhetorical sciences. Wahlsten is aware the object of study is not an obvious one within the field Rhetoric, but argues for the need of studies of games and Virtual Reality, and the importance of them for Rhetorical sciences in the future.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT This thesis will explore the execution of the monograph role of "Anton Chekhov" in the original one-act play, An Evening with Anton Chekhov. The play script, rehearsal and public performances of the piece are all self- generated by the candidate, with the proper assistance of the thesis committee. This written thesis serves as the completion of the thesis project, and includes analysis of several key areas of the development of the script and thesis role. This document includes the original script with endnotes and a structural analysis. Social and historical background of the character, Anton Chekhov, a real person, is presented. This background includes the history as it pertains to Anton Chekhov and the national mindset in pre-revolutionary Russia. This background is integral in not only the development of the character, but also of the script which supports the character. Much of what is contained in the script is from correspondences, anecdotes, and written material from and about Anton Chekhov. These materials will be used as interpretive tools in the development of the character, and includes clues to physical appearance and personality. The character analysis contained herein is, in part, a reflection of these historical and environmental concerns. In addition, external and internal portrayal and the means used to achieve them are discussed. These means include physical and vocal techniques for the stage in conjunction with the use of emotional recall, behaving "as if," and being emotionally and energetically present for the acting partner. Since this is a "one man show," the acting partner will take the form of the audience as other or confidante. This phenomenon, and its effect on the performance, is included in the written thesis. The acting approach in execution of the monograph will also be reflected in a journal, which will contain a record of the successes, challenges, choices and adjustments made in the rehearsal/performance process. Included among these will be the various adjustments made in order to achieve a higher level of spontaneity in movement and transition, and how this semi-improvisational approach aided in adjusting to each unique audience in performance. Analysis will be provided by members of the committee. Dr. Julia Listengarten and Mark Brotherton will submit performance analysis, while the committee chair, Dr. Donald Seay will also provide rehearsal reports. Script work on An Evening with Anton Chekhov will begin in October of 2005, with rehearsals commencing on February 6, 2006. Two performances will be given at the Black Box theatre on the campus of UCF on Monday, February 27, and Tuesday February 28, 2006.
M.F.A.
Department of Theatre
Arts and Sciences
Theatre

Abstract:
In this PhD thesis we discuss methods of recognizing finite groups by the structure of normalizers of certain 3-subgroups. We explain a method for characterizing groups using character theoretic and block theoretic methods and we use these methods to characterize Alt(9). Furthermore, we describe a particular hypothesis related to the 3-local structure of finite groups of local characteristic 3 and characterize two almost simple proper extensions of \(\Omega\)\(_8\) (2) as examples of the local approach to group recognition. We also give a 3-local characterization of the sporadic simple group HN using local methods whilst applying a character theoretic result.

Full text
Abstract:
Characterization in Pulitzer-awarded features and traditional features was measured using a characterization typology developed by the author. Although some of the results were statistically constrained by a small n, those results which were statistically significant reflect that what separates Pulitzer-winning features from regular features are those elements of characterization particular to scene: a character's distinctive physical characteristics, clothing and possessions; the setting and environment as it defines a character; a physical description of character that is not lineament nor habitual posture or expression but bodily appearance in the immediate moment; a character's movements and actions, facial expressions, words, and thoughts. In an era when the predicted demise of newspapers is more fact than fiction, the reader's experience with newspapers is paramount. Crucial to the news reading experience is the reader's enjoyment: how "I" experienced a story through empathy, parasocial interaction, and/or identification. Perhaps a solution to newspapers' loss of readership is scene: within scene, fear, anguish, exhilaration, and joy are not only the experiences of the characters, but also that of the reader's.

Abstract:
In storytelling, one of the most important functions of dialogue is to create characterisation. Character voice is each character's unique style of speaking, which can impart explicit or implicit information about characters, such as their personality, age, or gender. Japanese language texts are known to use gendered language and role language (yakuwarigo) as a way of creating characterisation and character voice. This case study examines the English dialogue and the Japanese subtitles of four characters (Tissaia, Yennefer, Geralt, and Jaskier) from the series The Witcher. The aim was to categorize the strategies used to recreate the original character voice, to mark the differences in the character voices, and to examine their possible impact on the overall characterisations. The study concludes that the main strategy in creating character voice was gendered language and role language. Overall, the English and Japanese character voices were roughly equivalent with each other, and the used gendered language was supported by the characters’ personalities or appearance. The character Jaskier had the most differences between his English and Japanese dialogue, most likely due to the difficulties in recreating his brand of humorous tone in subtitle form.

This essay explores the character development of Ronan Lynch in Maggie Stiefvater's The Dream Thieves (2013) with the intention of showing the process of self-acceptance through the narratological concepts character and characterization as well as Young Adult literature research focused on coming-of-age in terms of self-discovery and sexual identity. It was found that Ronan does reach self-acceptance. In terms of characterization, this can be seen through his relationships with other characters and his role in the narrative. When it comes to coming-of-age, his self-acceptance is seen through his self-discovery in regards to sexuality, and especially through his identity construction in relation to his supernatural ability.

Abstract:
碩士
臺北市立師範學院
應用語言文學研究所
92
The Tso-chuan has been regard as one of the three commentaries on the Spring-and-Autumn-Annals. It’s contribution for Chinese literature is far more than that. The Tso-chuan preserves a remarkably detailed account of the people who lived through this troubled transitional period of warfare and social ferment. The record focuses mainly on the rulers of the feudal states and their immediate associates, and they are the main characters in the Tso-chuan. Besides, the author of the Tso-chuan was enthusiastic about the minor characters who appeared less than the main characters. In this treatise we will discuss how the author of the Tso-chuan describe the minor characters, and the influence for the Chinese literature from that time on. In chapter one we are talking about the connection between the Tso-chuan and Chinese novel. In chapter two we will find out the main purpose novelist put miner characters in their novels. In chapter three we are going to infer the important role that minor characters play in the Tso-chuan. Furthermore, in chapter four we will discuss the methods that the author describes the minor characters, and in chapter five we will induct the characteristic of describing the minor characters. In chapter six we will talk about the influence on the later Chinese literary works. We will have a conclusion in chapter seven.

Abstract:
The reading of selected literary texts in this thesis traces the changes from a divinely ordered world of stability (Thomas Mann's Bud<lenbrooks) to surroundings characterized by insecurity (William Faulkner's The Sound and the Fury) to an unstable environment giving rise to largely futile attempts at finding answers to seemingly illogical questions (Thomas Pynchon's The Crying of Lot 49). As a product of the accelerated speed of technological progression and the information revolution in the twentieth century, man is more often than not incapable of adjusting to changed circumstances in a seemingly hostile environment. Indeed, instability and unpredictability are external factors determining the sense of insecurity and uncertainty characterising the 'world' depicted in the literary texts under consideration. For this reason judicious use will be made of philosophical and psychoanalytical concepts, based, amongst others, on Nietzschean and Freudian theories, to explain the disintegration of families, the anguish experienced by individuals or, indeed, the shifting identities informing the portrayal of character in selected literary texts.
Afrikaans and Theory of Literature
D.Litt. et Phil. Abstract:
This study attempts to define more clearly the concepts 'flat character' and 'round character' by examining instances of Sepedi literature. Definitions provided by theorists are in most cases vague and may lead to unsatisfactory interpretations. The best examples in this instance are the definitions provided by Forster - they create problems particularly with references to the concept 'round character'. Forster's definition creates the impression that the difference can be based on the manner of characterization. In this investigation, attention is thus paid to characterization, while it is pointed out that these concepts are not to be confused with the concepts 'antagonist', 'protagonist' and 'tritagonist', The latter types of characters are classified as structural elements while the former are thematically important. The Sepedi literary works chosen for the purposes of this stUdy represent the four most important prose genres in Sepedi. Tsebe's Noto-ya-Masogana (1954) is the representative of the category 'love story'; Kekana's Nnete Fela (1989) is a detective story; Rammala's Lukas Motšheletšhele (1963) and Mphahlele's Letsogo la Molao (1984) are tragic narratives, while Phatudi concentrates on and describes elements of pathos in his Tladi wa Dikgati (1971). The characters in Tsebe and Kekana's narratives are flat. Whereas Tsebe's Lesibana is portrayed as a multidimensional character, Ariel in Kekana's detective story is presented as one - dimensional. According to the definitions of Forster, Lesibana could be classified as a round character and Ariel as a flat character. The problem that surfaces in this instance also becomes manifest in the investigation into Rammala, Mphahlele and Phatudi's works. Rammala's Lukas Motsheletshele and Mphahlele's Faro are multidimensional characters as opposed to Phatudi's Tladi who is one¬dimensional, yet all of them are round characters. The distinction that can be drawn between the concepts 'flat character' and 'round character' has to do with humaneness. The reader's identification with the flat character is based on the reader's ability to distinguish between good and evil, while an understanding of and a feeling for fellow human beings determine identification with the round character. The author brings about this identification process by using a variety of literary devices. In this thesis, a great deal of emphasis is placed on the theme of each of the mentioned works and on how this theme determines the character types. The concept of 'identification' is a central issue in this study and has thus been explained in detail. The specific literary devices used by the author to bring about this identification have thus also been carefully investigated and discussed. It was discovered that characterization as such does not determine whether characters are flat or round; instead, this is determined thematically.
Thesis (DLitt (African Languages))--University of Pretoria, 2006.
African Languages
unrestricted

Abstract:
碩士
國立臺南大學
教育學系課程與教學碩士班
95
This research was examined the characterization of“Grimm fairy tales”and the metaphorical meanings of the symbol and social phenomenons embedded in the text. The study further “Content Analysis” and “Questionnaire Survey ” was used to analyze the characterization of thirty-one fifth grader students participated in this study. The instrument was the“Characterization category form”and“Characterization Feedback Survey”. Results indicated as follow that:(1) there were five ways of portraying the character images, including appearance, personality, social status, others’ judgment and description of personal skills. Among them, “appearance” coule be categorized into four items, most portray in beauty, ranked 54.55%; “personality” could be divided into seventy-nine items, most portray in negative personality , ranked 53.40%; “social status” included two items, most portray in wealthy status , ranked 76.19%; “others’ judgment” can be categorized into three items, most portray in negative judgment , ranked 64.86%; and “description of personal skills” was divided into two items, most portray in special skills , ranked 85.19%. In addition, there were seven portrait manners“direct portrait, irony, contrast, symbol, caricature, personification, enantiosis”to be used in the text .(2) there were six metaphorical meanings found in terms of the symbols of characterization. The princess symboled“gently and beauty without skills”, the king symboled “brownstone and damnable character”, the stepmother and witch symboled“damnable character”, the fish and lion symboled “the positive image of animals”, the wolf symboled “the negative image of animals”. the fox, rabbit ,cat, hedgehog symboled“the dual personality animals”.and six reflections found in terms of the social phenomenons of characterization. They were the ideology of gender bias, the cruel human-relation rule, “survival of the fittest”, the uneven distribution of wealth in the society, appropriate and easy materials, conservative and primitive folkway, the emotional relief were reflected the social phenomenons.(3) Most fifth grade students could find more than one character whom they like or dislike in a fairy tale, and they could directly explained the reasons. Furthermore, the students didn’t totally accept all the behaviors of those characters whom they liked. In addition, for the ones they didn’t like, nearly all of the subjects gave the clear comments of how to improve this character. In terms of the analysis of problem-solving method, 69.75% of subjects could effectively solved the problem, 13.52% of the subjects could provide the effective, creative problem-solving strategies. However, 16.73% of subjects were prone to negatively face the problems or digress; it might infer that there was a need to improve those participants’ problem-solving ability. Finally, in terms of the educational effect the grade students gained from the text, it was found that students learned more from the characters’ “negative” personalities and attitudes than from the “positive” ones. In other words, spoke of the portrait of character image, students learned in a better way by introspecting themselves when they read a character, than by emulating those characters who were better than themselves.

Abstract:
This investigation looks on how Setswana short story writers depict female characters in short stories as compared to their male counterparts. Four methods are employed in this study, namely: definition, interpretation, comparison and classification, to cast light on the problems of depiction of female characters. An adapted narratological model was considered most suitable for this study. In this model, when content is discussed, topic is emphasized, when plot structure is analysed, theme is highlighted and when style is examined, atmosphere is of paramount importance. Vital concepts related to the portrayal of female characters are (a) author, (b) text structure, (c) character, (d) womanism and (e) feminism. Discussions of the concept of the author tend to fall into two groups, namely: the real author and the author of the text. This second group, is also subdivided into three classes, which are biolographical, implied and abstract authors. The author as a person is the originator of the events, which are obviously related to the depiction of female characters. A biographical author is connected to real events, which are then used to describe female characters. An abstract author in this study is taken to mean the same as an implied author, because both types of voice disclose the information of the real author in the depiction of female characters. This information is the events through which female characters are portrayed in Setswana short stories. The structure of the text is examined as divided into three strata, namely: content, plot structure and style. Content is discussed as the events which will make up the plot have not been arranged by the author yet, that is are there before the text is written. This content layer has four elements, namely: events, characters, time and space, which are united into one unit by the topic. This topic controls all these elements. Plot structure is then the way in which the author as originator of the events arranges them. In the plot structure the four elements of the content are allocated different functions which revolve around one theme only. Analysis of plot structure is very important because it is where events related to female characters are arranged. Style is defined as a way in which an author uses language to expose his female characters when writing his short stories. The short story is divided in this study into two major types, namely: stories that simply inform and stories that entertain. Description of both types of short stories is given equal attention because the portrayal of female characters in many Setswana short stories is the aim of this examination. Character is the next concept examined in this study. Characters can be any of four types, namely: (a) content characters, (b) plot structure characters, (c) flat characters and (d) round characters. Content and plot structure characters differ in function in the plot. The distinction between flat and round characters lies in the manner in which they are described. These distinctions are important because this research focuses on female characters in the presentation selected Setswana short stories. Female characters can be portrayed by the author himself/herself, the narrator, the character himself/herself and/or by other characters. In these Setswana short stories female characters are usually portrayed as having no rights, which reflect all the mistakes made by people though not admitted by society in general. The portrayal of female characters can be approached using several categories, namely: womanism, experimental phase and feminism. Thus, analysis of selected Setswana short stories unravels how Setswana short story writers depict female characters, whether as womanists, women of the experimental phase or as feminists. Thus, this study divides the selected Setswana short stories into three groups, namely: stories of phase of womanism, stories of experimental phase and stories of phase of feminism, to find out whether depiction of female characters belong to only one of these three themes or to more than one. Stories of phase of womanism The study gives an investigation of womanism: Distinguishing characteristics related to womanism are: -- oppression and ill-treatment of female characters; -- discrimination and segregation of female characters; -- ignorance of female characters; -- the fact that female character should be beaten when they have done something wrong; and -- restriction of the role of female characters to taking care of their own families and the extended family. Setswana short story writers who write about womanism include Chikane ('Mafaratlhatlha a botshelo'and 'Sego sa metsi'), Magoleng and Ntsime ('Khutsana and 'Lerato le eseng lona'), Shole ('Seteropo ke sa gago' and 'Tlogela ngwanake'), Malope ('Le fa o ka e buela lengopeng…' and 'O nkutlwe') and Sikwane ('MmaModiegi'). These short story writers portray female characters living traditional lives even through events which address the issues of feminism. This vividly indicates that although life changes, women`s lives remain static, according to these Setswana short story writers. Stories of phase of feminism Feminism is the next concept explored by this study. The outstanding features which have been discovered in feminism attempts to: -- eradicate oppression of female characters; -- fight for equality amongst women and men in all spheres of life; -- remove segregation of and discrimination against female characters; and -- change the whole society. Setswana short story writers whose work explores the above aspects include Sikwane ('MmaModiegi'), Shole ('Seteropo ke sa gago' and 'Tlogela ngwanake’), Chikane ('Sego sa metsi') and Malope ('Bodiba jo bo jeleng ngwana `a mmaago…' and 'O nkutlwe'). These short story writers emphasize a change in the lives of female characters, describing the fight for equality for all so that each person becomes liberated. Stories of experimental phase Finally, this study examines the experimental phase which shares with both womanism and feminism. Setswana short story writers of the experimental phase intertwine these two approaches when they write their short stories. Features that are identified in both womanism and feminism are: -- the freedom of female characters; -- the liberation of the whole society; -- agreement on marriage and -- working together as a team to solve the problems of society. Malope is shown to be a Setswana short story writer who mixes womanism and feminism. What Malope stresses is that often female characters do not know where they stand, whether they belong to womanism or feminism, and so they end up living a double life.
Thesis (DLitt (African Languages))--University of Pretoria, 2007.
African Languages
unrestricted

Burton, Darrin. "Geologically-based permeability anisotropy estimates for tidally-influenced reservoir analogs using lidar-derived, quantitative shale character data." Thesis, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/2152/ETD-UT-2011-05-2722.

Full text
Abstract:
The principle source of heterogeneity affecting flow behavior in conventional clastic reservoirs is discontinuous, low-permeability mudstone beds and laminae (shales). Simple ‘streamline’ models have been developed which relate permeability anisotropy (kv/kh ) at the reservoir scale to shale geometry, fraction, and vertical frequency. A limitation of these models, especially for tidally-influenced reservoirs, is the lack of quantitative geologic inputs. While qualitative models exist that predict shale character in tidally-influenced environments (with the largest shales being deposited near the turbidity maximum in estuaries, and in the prodelta-delta front), little quantitative shale character data is available. The purpose of this dissertation is to collect quantitative data to test hypothetical relationships between depositional environment and shale character and to use this data to make geologically-based estimates of for different reservoir elements. For this study, high-resolution, lidar point-clouds were used to measure shale length, thickness, and frequency. This dissertation reports a novel method for using distance-corrected lidar intensity returns to distinguish sandstone and mudstone lithology. Lidar spectral and spatial data, photo panels, and outcrop measurements were used to map and quantify shale character. Detailed shale characteristics were measured from four different tidally-influenced reservoir analogs: estuarine point bar (McMurray Formation, Alberta, Canada), tidal sand ridge (Tocito Sandstone, New Mexico), and unconfined and confined tidal bars (Sego Sandstone, Utah). Estuarine point bars have long (l=67.8 m) shales that are thick and frequent relative to the other units. Tidal sand ridges have short (l=8.6 m dip orientation) shales that are thin and frequent. Confined tidal bars contain shales that are thin, infrequent, and anisotropic, averaging 16.3 m in length (dip orientation). Unconfined tidal bars contain nearly equidimensional (l=18.6 m dip orientation) shales with moderate thicknesses and vertical frequency. The observed shale geometries agree well with conceptual models for tidal environments. The unique shale character of each unit results in a different distribution of estimated . The average estimated kv/kh values for each reservoir element are: 8.2*10^4 for estuarine point bars, 0.038 for confined tidal bars, 0.004 for unconfined tidal bars, and 0.011 for tidal sand ridges.
text

Abstract:
碩士
國立臺灣師範大學
表演藝術研究所
102
In the author’s viewpoint, the charm of a musical play comes from the sparkles between characters. There are numerous characters with different personalies on the stage, which might be a reflection of people around you, or even of yourself. The conflict, harmony separation and reconstruction of these characters are like blocks of pigments which were gradually interacted and developed into a colorful and beautiful painting. Overall, the interaction between characters is the key of a play. “Human” is the soul of a play, therefore analyzing the character is an important preparation for the performer. This study aims to discuss the leading character of the play “Mu-Lan” on the personality and characterization, and to further understand her role play, features and appearance throughout the story line and her interaction with other characters; in the meantime, the context of this play is analyzed as well as discussed the meaning of each scene. In the end, the 6 songs of the play, namely <我非(飛)我願>、<美麗的錯誤>、<愛喲>、<貫甫再見>、<我的思念>、<終曲>are analyzed to express the transformations and emotions of Mu-Lan at different stages: escape- confront- confused- find true love- heartbreak- bravely let go. The analysis helps to have a comprehensive understanding of the character, instead of describing her through vague imagination or lopsided view, and it helps the performer to present the inner emotion and outer expression through multi-dimensions.

Abstract:
In this dissertation, the art of the short story as practised by S.N. Nkadimeng (Mmantshaotlogele) is investigated in accordance with the narratological descriptive model. According to this approach the literary work is divided into three levels, namely, content level, plot level and style level. The level of style, however, is not discussed in detail in this dissertation. In this study, Nkadimeng's art is placed within the framework of a brief discussion of the Northem Sotho short story as an art form. Furthermore, the aim of this investigation is formulated. Thereafter the relevant concepts which are discussed in this dissertation are also illustrated. In the second, third and fourth chapters attention is paid mainly to the analysis of a single short story, that is 0 nyalwa lenyalo mang .. . ; however, the other short stories in this collection, among others Nna nka se je dipute and Thapelo ya pula are referred to as examples. In the last chapter, Nkadimeng's work, particularly with regard to his ironic stories, is compared to Mpepele's and Matsepe's work. Nkadimeng writes with compassion about his people; his irony is delicate and mocking without venom, which differs from that of Matsepe and Mpepele. Whereas Matsepe mocks important figures in the society, such as leaders, kings, the rich and so forth, Nkadimeng's and Mpepele's mocking is aimed at the weaknesses of the ordinary people.
Dissertation (MA)--University of Pretoria, 2012.
Philosophy
unrestricted
