Abstract:
The mass of carbon trapped in methane hydrates exceeds that in conventional fossil fuel reservoirs. While methane in coarse-grained hydrate-bearing sediments is technically recoverable, most methane hydrates are found in fine-grained marine sediments where gas recovery is inherently impeded by very low gas permeability. Using experimental methods and analyses, this thesis advances the understanding of fine-grained sediments in view of gas production from methane hydrates. The research scope includes: a new approach for the classification of fines in terms of electrical sensitivity, the estimat

Sediments in the Trinity River were chemically, physically and biologically characterized and assessed for toxicity. Laboratory bioassays were conducted to identify sediments which induced toxic responses in test organisms and to document these responses through time. Metal and organic contaminant concentrations in bottom sediments were measured. Relationships between these concentrations and biological responses observed in laboratory bioassays were determined. Toxicity identification / reduction methods were used to characterize sediment toxicants. Sediment oxygen demand was also measured in

Abstract:
The amount of carbon trapped in hydrates is estimated to be larger than in conventional oil and gas reservoirs, thus methane hydrate is a promising energy resource. The high water pressure and the relatively low temperature needed for hydrate stability restrict the distribution of methane hydrates to continental shelves and permafrost regions. Stability conditions add inherent complexity to coring, sampling, handling, testing and data interpretation, and have profound implications on potential production strategies. New guidelines are identified for sampling equipment and protocols. Then a nov

Abstract:
In-situ geotechnical testing of surficial sediment layers in areas of active sediment dynamics can provide essential information about physical and geotechnical variations of sediment properties with regards to active sediment remobilization processes. For example, portable free fall penetrometers (PFFPs) can assist with the detection of mobile sediment layers. They are easy to deploy, and can provide a large spatial coverage in a time- and cost-effective manner. However, they often struggle to provide more detailed information about the properties of mobile sediment layers due to a lack of ca
