Abstract:
In Ayurveda, the subject matter is told in the form of Sutras (Sanskrit verses). To make common people understand the hidden meaning of these verses our Acharyas especially the commentators have adopted application of Nyayas (Maxims) as one of the most relevant method. Chakrapani the famous commentator of Charaka Samhita has quoted various Maxims in his Ayurveda Dipika commentary. Keeping this in view, an attempt is made in the present study to trace out the various references of Nyayas mentioned in Charaka Samhita Sutra sthana.

Abstract:
Ayurveda is the age-old science of healing which encompasses the scriptures of Acharyas like Charaka, Sushruta, and Vagbhata etc. What differentiates Ayurveda from other Pathy is its supreme objective that is to help maintain the health of healthy individual and cure of diseases of a patient. Shotha (edema) is dealt in Ayurveda by different names such as Shotha, Shopha, Shvayathu, Utsheda, samhata etc. In Charaka Samhita, Chikitsa sthana chapter- 12 Shvayathu chikitsa, Acharya Agnivesh questioned the great sage- Lord Atreya about the etiology, sign and symptoms and treatment of Shvayathu roga regarding which the Lord Atreya explained in detail about the disease. Although, Shotha has been documented in Charaka Samhita, Sushruta Samhita, Ashtanga sangraha but the profound essence of pathogenesis is found in Madhava nidana (700 AD) which is influenced by the Brihat trayees. In clinical practice, many patients come with the symptom of hasta-pada Shotha (swelling of the limbs) and without the proper knowledge of Ayurvedic literature, it is very much difficult for an Ayurvedic practitioner to differentiate them as whether it is a symptom of disease or prodromal symptom or complication of a disease etc. This paper is an honest effort on differentiating hasta-pada Shotha in different diseases or conditions.

Abstract:
Ayurveda described various skin diseases under the single heading Kushta. In Charaka Samhita, Acharya Charaka explained Ashtadasha Kushtas in two main categories namely ‘Maha Kushta’ and ‘Kshudra Kushta’. Kushta is tridoshaja vyadi, however, the symptoms appear according to the dosha predominance. Vipadika is one of the Kshudra Kushta with predominance of vata kapha doshas and it is charactrised by Pani Pada sputana (fissures in palms and soles) and Teevra vedana (severe pain). According to clinical manifestations, Vipadika is more similar to ‘Planto Palmar Psoriasis’ which is long lasting Auto Immune disease. It is found to be 3-4% of all Psoriasis cases. In modern science, many treatment modalities are available to treat the disease. They may cause many side effects and recurrence after subside is also very common which gave a big scope to alternative system of medicines to treat Vipadika. In the present case study, the line of management followed was mentioned by Acharya Charaka, according to dosha Predominance. The patient, initially administered sneha pana with Maha Tiktaka gritha for 7 days which was beneficial to pacify pitta dosha and kapha dosha utkleshana before Vamana. Later on, Vamana therapy was conducted to eliminate kapha dosha which gave good symptomatic relief to the patient. However, in view of the severity, chronicity and recurrence of the disease, Mridu Lavana jala Avagaha Sweda followed by Padhabyanga with pinda taila was also performed which resulted in excellent improvement in very short period of time.

Abstract:
Basic principles of Ayurveda emphasize the importance of hetu (causative factor) in disease pathogenesis. Indulgence in dharaniya vega (urges to be suppressed or controlled) acts as a factor in cascade of pathogenesis. In Charaka Samhita description on nine dharaniya vegas is scattered in different contexts. Collection of all these information and analysis paves way for better understanding of the concept of Dharaniya vegas and very helpful in health promotion. It is quite interesting to note that these dharaniya vegas are connected to emotional states of mind. The natural urges of mind are important aspect of living body and significantly determine the health or diseased state of an individual. Individual desirous of health should control these urges by gaining control over sense organs. These nine dharaniya vegas, if not controlled can lead to tridosha prakopa (vitiation of body humours) and result in varied psychosomatic manifestations. In the present article an attempt is been made to explore the concept of dharaniya vega mentioned in Charaka samhita with contemporary relevance in clinical Ayurveda practice and thereby aide in health promotion and also as a preventive tool. Following the devastation UN peacekeeping experienced in the 1990s, the United Nations Panel on Peace Operations wrote a report, known as the Brahimi Report, that contained twenty key recommendations as how to make peacekeeping more effective and efficient. These recommendations addressed certain fundamental flaws in peacekeeping practices and procedures. This paper discusses the purpose behind several key recommendations and examines the political and internal debate surrounding their implementation. It addresses the effect of the Brahimi Report on UN reform and concludes that the Brahimi Report has spurred a long needed examination of peacekeeping and has influenced progress in most areas, even though most of the actual suggestions of the Panel were not followed

Abstract:

Guazuigua is a small village in Bolivia, which has had too small water resources, especially for irrigation. A project started after some studies were made, to create a canal to provide the village with water from a nearby town. To make the canal work it had to cross a dried out river. There have been several attempts to cross these dried out rivers, but with poor results. The purpose of the report is to provide a solution for this problem. During the field studies, the project changed direction, and a decision was made to build a well system instead. This proved to be a better solution for the village’s water problem. The report still remained with solving the canal problem. Calculations show that a pipe placed across the dried out river would break down. The report suggests a support construction which resembles a cable stayed bridge, which is build economical and by materials accessible in the area.

Magadzire, Nyasha. "Reconstruction of a fire regime using MODIS burned area data : Charara Safari Area, Zimbabwe." Thesis, Stellenbosch : Stellenbosch University, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/80042.

Abstract:
Thesis (MSc)--Stellenbosch University, 2013.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Current efforts to address Zimbabwe‘s decade long veld fire crisis has partly been hindered by a lack of financial resources and fire data. This study illustrates the potential of using the MODIS burned area product as an alternative cost- and time-effective method for reconstructing historical fire records in Zimbabwe. Two MODIS burned area products were evaluated, namely the MCD45A1 and WAMIS (Meraka Institute‘s MODIS burned area product). Both products yielded similar levels of accuracy despite the difference in algorithms. However, it is assumed that at certain thresholds, either in tree cover or fire intensity, WAMIS ceases to map fires as accurately as the MCD45A1. Ten years of fire data for Charara Safari Area (CSA) was extracted from the MCD45A1, and used as a basis to establish six parameters: fire incidence, extent, seasonality, fire size, frequency and fire return interval (FRI). It was observed that approximately 50% of CSA burned annually, with an average of 132 fires occurring every year. Although there was no overall increase or decrease in the extent of area burned over the 10 year study period, an increasing trend in fire incidence was noted. Through an assessment of effective fire size, it was established that more fires in CSA were gradually becoming smaller in size, while the extent of area burned remained fairly constant. Hence, the increase in fire incidences and lack of a corresponding increase in area burned. This study was also used to identify areas in the fire regime that may be a potential ecological risk to the miombo woodland in CSA. Three points of concern were revealed: firstly, a high prevalence of late season fires was observed in the northern bounds of CSA. Secondly, 64.2% of the total area burned in CSA burned between 6 and 10 times over the 10 year period, and lastly, 85% of the total area burned over the period 2001 and 2010 had a FRI of less than 2 years. The combination of late season fires, high fire frequency and short FRI in CSA is indicative of possible alterations in the state of the miombo woodlands, which may have negative socio-economic implications on CSA and its surrounding communities. This study has demonstrated that the MCD45A1 is a useful source of much needed fire information for Zimbabwe. Therefore, the possibility of integrating methods employed in this study into the current collection of fire data should be given due consideration.

This chapter features the work of charanga flute player Johnny Pacheco in New York before he became known as the creator of the Fania All Stars, and also the work of pianist Charlie Palmieri and his Charanga La Duboney. The Puerto-Rican brothers Eddie and Charlie Palmieri have been highly influential in the development of Latin music in the United States. While Eddie Palmieri’s La Perfecta utilized the charanga flute of George Castro, Charlie Palmieri’s charanga (one of the first to play the Palladium), featured flautists Johnny Pacheco and Rod Lewis Sánchez. Flute solos by Pacheco and Sánchez on the Charanga Duboney recordings of ‘Bronx Pachanga’ and ‘Mack the Knife’ are analyzed here to ascertain whether a distinctive New York sabor is present.

Abstract:
We propose and evaluate a new technique for learning hybrid automata automatically by observing the runtime behavior of a dynamical system.Working from a sequence of continuous state values and predicates about the environment, CHARDA recovers the distinct dynamic modes, learns a model for each mode from a given set of templates, and postulates \textit{causal} guard conditions which trigger transitions between modes. Our main contribution is the use of information-theoretic measures (1)~as a cost function for data segmentation and model selction to penalize over-fitting and (2)~to determine the likely causes of each transition.CHARDA is easily extended with different classes of model templates, fitting methods, or predicates. In our experiments on a complex videogame character, CHARDA successfully discovers a reasonable over-approximation of the character's true behaviors. Our results also compare favorably against recent work in automatically learning probabilistic timed automata in an aircraft domain: CHARDA exactly learns the modes of these simpler automata.

Abstract:

Abstract:
In the Terai region of South-Eastern Nepal, there persists a form of agricultural bonded labour called Harwa-Charwa, rooted in agricultural feudal social relations. The Terai has a long and dynamic political history with limited employment opportunities and high levels of migration. This paper is an external qualitative analysis of over 150 life stories from individuals living in an area with high levels of bonded labour. These stories were previously analysed during a workshop through a collective participatory analysis. Both the participatory analysis and external analysis found similar mechanisms that trap people in poverty and bonded labour. The disaggregation by age in the external analysis could explain why child marriage and child labour were very important in the collective analysis but did not match the results of a baseline survey in the same geographical area that found only a few cases. The respondents were aged between 15 and 65. Child marriage and child labour had shaped the lives of the adults but have since decreased. Methodologically, the different ways of analysis diverge in their ability to differentiate timelines. The participatory analysis gives historical insights on pathways into child labour, but although some of the social norms persist this situation has changed.
