Abstract:
Since the last IAU Colloquium devoted to Ap stars, die continuous development of high signal to noise observations and of computerized analysis tools have greatly increased the effectiveness of abundance anomalies as a probe of hydrodynamical processes in stars. Until the 1980s, they seemed limited to ApBp and AmFm stars where the effects are largest. More recently the abundances of Li and He have been suggested to play important diagnostic roles for hydrodynamics in both the Sun (Proffitt and Michaud 1991b, Pinsonneault et al. 1989) and Halo stars (Proffitt and Michaud 1991a, Pinsonneault et al. 1992, Vauclair 1988, Charbonnel et al. 1992, Deliyannis and Demarque 1991). The observation of a Li abundance gap in F stars of clusters has raised the question of the link between these objects and the AmFm stars (Michaud 1986, Charbonneau and Michaud 1988, 1991) or alternately with solar type stars. The observed Li abundance on die subgiant branch sheds some light on this problem (Charbonneau et al. 1989; Charbonnel and Vauclair 1992). In solar type stars, the observed Li abundance constrains the superficial turbulence that may inhibit surface He gravitational settling (Proffitt and Michaud 1991b) whose effects can be detected using solar seismology (Guzik and Cox 1992, Dziembowski et al. 1992).

We present the impact of meridional circulation and shear turbulence on the evolution of the lithium abundance at the surface of evolved stars originating from the hot side of the Li Dip. We show that our fully consistent treatment of the same hydrodynamical processes which can account for C and N anomalies in B type stars (Talon et al. 1997) and for the shape of the hot side of the Li dip in open clusters (Talon & Charbonnel 1998) also explains Li observations in stars with Teff higher than 7000K on the main sequence as well as in their evolved counterparts (see also Charbonnel & Talon 1999).

Abstract:

AbstractThermohaline mixing has been recently identified as the dominating process that governs the photospheric composition of low-mass bright giant stars (Charbonnel & Zahn 2007). Here we present the predictions of stellar models computed with the code STAREVOL taking into account this mechanism together with rotational mixing and atomic diffusion. We compare our theorical predictions with recent observations and discuss how the corresponding yields for 3He are compatible with the observed behaviour of this light element in our Galaxy.

In Part III, we first discuss the LiBeB observations in subgiant stars and the constraints they bring on the transport processes occuring on the main sequence. Evidence is then reviewed that suggests that in situ mixing occurs in evolved low mass Population I and Population II stars. Theoretical mechanisms that can create such mixing are discussed, as well as their implications for the evolution of the LiBeB and 3He.

In Part II we discuss the lithium data for metal-poor stars and the constraints it places on stellar depletion. There are a variety of indicators that place interesting bounds on the degree of stellar depletion, and in contrast to the other two sections the data for Population II stars provides weaker evidence for stellar lithium depletion. We review both the theoretical studies and the observational data, and critically evaluate the degree of stellar depletion consistent with the data.

Abstract:
[pas de résumé]
Jean Charbonnel was part of that generation of "young wolves", sponsored by Georges Pompidou, which - from the beginning of the 1960s - embarked on the conquest of those parts of the country that were hostile to Gaullism. That was how Jean Charbonnel succeeded in being elected a "député" in a part of the Corrèze that was "radical-socialiste", in which the initial contacts with local politics were more than difficult. With that victory on which to build, Jean Charbonnel made for himself a real stronghold in the south of the department (the "Pays de Brive") where he became a "conseiller général" (1964-1968), mayor of Brive (1966-1995), the initiator of the first forms of "intercommunalité", and a deputy for a total of fifteen years. With this base of practical experience on the ground, his Gaullism became clearly orientated towards a search for, and the defence of, a better social justice through the realisation of novel mechanisms whose aim was the integration of handicapped schoolchildren, and of young people into the world of work, or through the responsibility that was taken for older members of the community with the construction of "foyers-logements" (sheltered housing). Such local social action was echoed on the national level, particularly when Jean Charbonnel became "Ministre du Développement industriel et scientifique" (1972-1974), within the context of the "affaire Lipp" when he tried to obtain true recognition for the eminently "gaullien" principle of Participation, taking into account the interests of the workers, of the salaried employees and of the management. Jean Charbonnel's political action claimed to be resolutely progressive but above all reformist as it sought to associate the citizen - according to the place that he actually occupied within the Community - with the great reforms of the country. This thesis seeks therefore to comprehend how a Gaullist managed to establish himself in a left-wing area - the "Pays de Brive" -and the way in which his action made of him a left-wing Gaullist or rather a "gaulliste social" because he was intellectually nearer the Right than the Left, and above all because he never sought to break away from mainstream gaullism, by which he was quite different from the left-wing Gaullists

The main focus of this dissertation lies in establishing some general sufficient conditions for an expansion of the real ordered field by functions with domains Rn to be model complete and o-minimal. We approach this subject from the point of view of the o-minimal weak structures, by following the work of Charbonnel and Wilkie. Furthermore, when considering additional conditions, we are able to obtain the following generalization of a Gabrielovs result: an expansion of the real ordered field by restricted smooth functions, which is polynomially bounded and closed under partial differentiation, is model complete.

Abstract:
This study focuses on a rather neglected, although significant, part of Robert Charbonneau's (1911-1967) works: his criticism. Founder, with some friends from college, of la Releve (1934) and les editions de l'Arbre (1940), well-known novelist Charbonneau creates a critical work closely linked to that publishing and intellectual experience. Thus, literature, according to Charbonneau, is an economic phenomenon. But literature also fits in a world where the human is the dominant feature, where it is a preferred way to shed light on the human mystery. Influenced by Maritain and Mounier, admirer of Dostoevski and Mauriac, Charbonneau, with his Catholic viewpoint, conflicts with traditional French-Canadian nationalism because of the opening onto the world and the search for universality he proposes. The novel appears as the human expression's ideal form. Charbonneau finally wishes that French-Canadian literature be alive, human, and universal, and that its American meaning be understood. National is, in his opinion, unessential since a literary work is necessarily produced somewhere and, above all, intended to be literary in the first place.

Abstract:
The objective of my study is to demonstrate that sublimation is the principal aesthetic mechanism in the work of Valery Larbaud. In the first part of my work I seek to define a notion that intersects several fields of knowledge : theology, philosophy, aesthetics and psychoanalysis. This initial research enables me to make sublimation a concept with which to analyze literary texts. I will then seek to identify the sublimation characteristic of Larbaud. It emanates from a modern desire to describe, in the interior of the work, the creative act on the basis of the erotic. It results from a connection to the mother that determines the literary vocation. It can be explained also by the Catholicism of the author. These considerations give rise to new elegiac writings through which the notion of the sublime evolves in the first half of the 20th century in France

Abstract:

Abstract:
According to the Encyclopedia Britannica, an utilitarian aphorism is a doctrine or principle or any generally accepted truth conveyed in a concise, memorable statement. The practice of writing such aphorisms goes back historically to classical times. People such as Theognis, Hippocrates, and Seneca are among its main practitioners. Aphorisms have been used generally in the arts, literature, agriculture, medicine, jurisprudence, and politics. The term aphorism was first used by Hippocrates, and aphorisms such as "Life is short", "Art long", "Occasion sudden and dangerous", "Experience deceitful", and "Judgement difficult" were the first to appear. Later it was gradually applied to any statement accepted as true, and it became synonymous with maxims. The model of the aphorism that is employed everywhere in literature is one that is derived, directly or indirectly, wittingly or unwittingly, from Francis Bacon's theory of the aphorism."To think and write in fragments," according to Bacon, "compels the mind to seek its own connections in established thought, and thus ensures mental activity". Tudosa, Alina. Thesis, Université d'Ottawa / University of Ottawa, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/35976.

Full text
Abstract:

Abstract:
Bruno Charbonneau focuses on the continuities in Franco-African security relations. He seeks an explanation for the importance of French militarism in African politics and connects this militarism to a particular vision and discourse of ‘violence’. Charbonneau focuses on how violence has become a narrative in its own right and even a dominant mode of communication between France and its Francophone African partners, superseding and building on the older, colonial forms of communication. This study locates the legacy of imperial violence in its intellectual context, in the control over stories about violence, security, and the geopolitical imaginary. Through this approach, the author demonstrates that this discourse erased the history of older mental maps, and of violently displaced practices of space and identity. Therefore, within a specific geopolitical imaginary, the practices of military interventions and their intellectual representations are woven together in (postcolonial) narratives that obscure the violence of post-1960 France-Africa relations.
