Ieda, J., and S. Maekawa. Spinmotive force. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198787075.003.0007.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter begins with Faraday’s law, which states that electromotive forces power everything by virtue of the charge e of an electron, and introduces spinmotive forces which reflect the magnetic moment of an electron. This motive force reflects the energy conservation requirements of the spin-torque transfer process that is at the heart of spintronics. The Stern-Gerlach experiment that used spin-dependent forces established the existence of spin. It is shown here that conservative forces would exist even if an electron was not charged, and do exist for uncharged excitations, such as magnons or phonons. Such forces are especially important in ferromagnetic materials where the spinmotive force commonly drives an electronic charge current due to the higher mobility of the majority electrons.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter presents Maxwell equations determining the electromagnetic field created by an ensemble of charges. It also derives these equations from the variational principle. The chapter studies the equation’s invariances: gauge invariance and invariance under Poincaré transformations. These allow us to derive the conservation laws for the total charge of the system and also for the system energy, momentum, and angular momentum. To begin, the chapter introduces the first group of Maxwell equations: Gauss’s law of magnetism, and Faraday’s law of induction. It then discusses current and charge conservation, a second set of Maxwell equations, and finally the field–energy momentum tensor.

Full text
Abstract:
Noethers theorem shows that continuous global symmetries lead classically to conservation laws. Such symmetries can be divided into spacetime and internal symmetries. The invariance of Minkowski space-time under global Poincaré transformations leads to the conservation of the four-momentum and the total angular momentum. Examples for conserved charges due to internal symmetries are electric and colour charge. The vacuum expectation value of a Noether current is shown to beconserved in a quantum field theory if the symmetry transformation keeps the path-integral measure invariant.

New, Tim R. Insect behavior in conservation. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198797500.003.0022.

Full text
Abstract:
Some of the many ways in which understanding insect behavior can contribute to the conservation of threatened insect species, and complement the more widely acknowledged base of ecological knowledge, are outlined in a variety of different contexts to exemplify their importance and roles. Patterns of resource use by insects and their adaptability to environmental changes range from highly specific and non-flexible to the ability to adapt more readily, with many species of highest conservation concern linked with specializations that restrict their potential to change. Practical contexts discussed briefly include the discovery and use of resources, the problems of monitoring and assessing conservation priority and need, the options available as environments are changed, the difficulties of behavioral studies on rare and localized species, how behavior may link with vulnerability, and the integration of behavioral intricacies with insect conservation practice, helping to educate and encourage interest in this discipline.
