Plet, Philippe. "L'autorite dans le mouvement charismatique contemporain." Paris 4, 1990. http://www.theses.fr/1990PA040083.
Full textAuthority relationships are analysed inside the charismatic movement as a whole and more particularly within the large charismatic communities in france since their foundation to either their integration in the historical churches and in the society or to the establisment of charismatic chruches, from 1973 to 1986. The study also tries to sort out criteria which have allowed the authority to be identified, chosen and established, and the power of the leaders of this movement to be exerted. The method of "content analysis" is used in interviews of layer people as well as leaders, especially thoses belonging to large communes both protestant and catholic, compared with a theorical analysis of charisma. The development of the subject includes : -the analysis of the legitimations involved in the gathering, the organization and the government of a group of men and women; -the analysis of the criteria of the actual charismatic fonction of these group leaders and a proposal of caracteristics for a "director charism". It shows the historical and social role of this "renewal" especially through its integration in the catholic church and how it provides in the contemporary french society with valours and meaning. In these different domains,we offer a few comparisons with what we had the opportunity to observe in the usa in 1984
Signorello, Rosario. "La voix charismatique : aspects psychologiques et caractéristiques acoustiques." Thesis, Grenoble, 2014. http://www.theses.fr/2014GRENL004/document.
Full textThis dissertation analyzes the charismatic voice in the context of political leadership. It is shown that the speaker-leader uses his/her voice based on two functions. The primary function is biological and consists of manipulating changes in fundamental frequency in order to be recognized as the leader of the group. The secondary function is learned and dependent upon the language spoken and the culture that one belongs to, and consists of changing voice quality in order to convey different traits and types of charisma. These functions are employed in order to persuade an audience and achieve certain goals. The phenomenon of charisma is first addressed through social-cognitive theory that distinguishes charisma of the mind (the leader's thought, actions, and vision expressed through written and spoken language) from charisma of the body (all non-verbal behaviors used for expressing one's message, affects, and emotions. Certain adjectives were established through empirical research to describe positive and negative traits in French, Italian, and Brazilian Portuguese speech. The tool MASCharP (Multi-dimensional Adjective-based Scale of Charisma Perception) was then developed in order to evaluate the charismatic traits of an individual's perceptible behavior. The study then establishes an acoustic and perceptual description of the charismatic voice. Speech range profiles are created for French, Italian, and Brazilian male leaders in order to represent the leaders' vocal extension in different communication contexts (formal vs. informal). The voice profiles demonstrate how the leaders adopt a particular vocal strategy related to the communication context as well as the leaders' persuasive strategy. These results show cross-language and cross-cultural similarities in leaders' vocal behavior. The following experimental phase demonstrates the influence of voice quality on the perception of different types and attributes of charismatic leadership. The speaker-leader uses his vocal production to be recognized as the leader of a group. This is true for all formal communication contexts wherein the leader must express his leadership and has a persuasive goal to achieve. If he wants to submit group members and hopes to appear as a dominant or threatening leader, the leader uses a low fundamental frequency associated with phonatory types such as creaky voice. If he wants to be perceived as a sincere, calm, and reassuring, he uses a higher fundamental frequency associated with his modal voice, avoiding phonatory types such as harsh voice. This is the primary function of the charismatic voice. Lastly, this study shows that, in political discourse, the traits of a charismatic leader are filtered by the language and cultural context of the interaction. The secondary function of the charismatic voice is therefore addressed: the use of one's voice for conveying different types of charisma, as characterized by varying attributes, is filtered through the language and culture that favor certain charismatic vocal behaviors which serve as prototypes that correspond to the audience's inherent expectations
Veldhuizen, Evert. "Le renouveau charismatique protestant en France (1968-1988)." Paris 4, 1995. http://www.theses.fr/1994PA040351.
Full textSome French protestants introduce the charismatic renewal in France in 1971. The movement touches Pentecostals, Reformed, Baptists, Lutherans, free churches and also Catholics. Consequently, its ecumenical dimension appears dominant at the time. But the Catholics outgrow the Protestants in number and organization since 1974, causing a decline of ecumenism and a reinforcement of protestant characteristics. The movement enters a phase of stabilization from 1980 onwards. There are an estimated 12 000 charismatic protestants in 1988 and several churches are charismatic. The different streams are evolving separately without any formal coordinating structure. The protestant charismatic renewal may marginal, but it has its importance, as it brings a certain renewal to French Protestantism

Full textSyrian and mesopotamian ascetics are well known for their lack of spiritual measure, and for the excessiv forms of ascetic life (stylitism). However, syrian monks were not at all isolated from their fellow countrymen; they had very close relationship with the lay people. Few historians have tried to understand this characteristic of syrian piety. Nevertheless, during the 3rd and 4th centuries ad ascetics (bnay qyama : sons of the covenant, or covenanters) were members of the clergy of the syrian-speaking church. The church itself was perhaps totally ascetical (ideas of burkitt, bauer and voobus). The heritage of the first syrian church is found in some heretical movements (manichaeism, daycanism, marcionism. . . ), in some heterodox monastic circles (messalianism), but also in the general monastic society. The ecclesiology of the monks (see philoxen of mabbug' letter to patricius), their ecclesial practice is directly inherited from early fourth century christianity. There is only two groups of people for this ecclesiology : ascetics who have the assurance of full salvation, and lay people who have no salvation at all if they do not submit to the charismatic ministry of the monks. Monastic christianity is not interested in dogmatic controversy (see john rufus monophysite apology), neither by ritual practice. The conflict with episcopal authorities began in the early fifth century. Ascetics took opportunity of the dogmatical conflict after ephesus (431) and chalcedon (451) to infiltrate the episcopal church, and to organize dissenting communities (severian monophysites, julianists, tritheists. . . )

Full textThe charismatic revival is known in Africa in the 70. It became a special attracting means and venue for new evangelization and conversion to Christianity. Likewise pentecostalist and spiritualist movements, the charismatic revival meets unquestionable success with African populations. Everyone is called upon to experience life in the Spirit by receiving the pouring out of the Spirit. The Acts of the Apostles which underline the divine deed in the daily life of the first Christian community, provide a set of criteria for and give a meaning and legitimacy to such an experience: God’s deeds are instant and complete in favour of the person or the group. The charismatic revival has taken into account the basic needs of thousands of Africans and play with their sensitivities following the example of African traditional religions. It has made use of those sensitivities in exploiting their commercial or mercenary dimension: the demand of efficiency made by the populations to their divinities. The fact of being attracted to the charismatic revival may be rendered by the likeness between the charismatic prayer style and some cultural and religious aspects drawn from the African soil. In fact charismatic revival in Africa stresses lot miracles, physical healings, and charismatic gifts. These physical and spiritual healings which are only forerunning signs of salvation are wrongly considered as the fullness of salvation and as such sought for themselves and not in view of salvation in Jesus Christ. The aim of this subject study is to draw attention to the need for the charismatic revival in Africa to better articulate its spiritual practice to the theological understanding of the faith; to ascertain in light of unquestionable criteria the thesis and opinions attributed to it, and to comprehend the reasons of its success among Africans

Full textThe purpose of this thesis deals with the charisma and the succession crisis in charismatic regime. With the help of theoretical elements drawn from Max Weber and his successors, we try to make an assessment, a summary of previous researches and those in progress, and propose our own understanding of charismatic power and the question of its usefulness. Indeed, although the concept of charisma is widely used and discussed by the theorists of power and leadership, it remains a major conundrum of social science, political and legal. So convinced of its relevance as a principle of legitimation of political power, we attempt to further explore some aspects neglected or insufficiently developed to provide an overview of the issue. The illustration of these great historical figures, the most significant, like Mussolini, Hitler, Khomeini, De Gaulle, Mao, Houphouët, and Nkrumah gives a glimpse of its virtues and its vices, thus highlighting the crises of succession in charismatic regime with their different solutions

Full textSince the christological definition pronounced at the Chalcedon Council in the fourth century a certain uniform dogmatic interpretation of the double nature of Christ, God and Man, has developed. This has not prevented emerging divergencies with regard to the law of unity, the so-called Hypostatic Union. On the one hand there is the official doctrine and all the systematic explanations of theology, on the other hand there is the reality of Christian life. The starting point of this thesis, the charismatic renewal with its exaggerated search for miracles and wonder, has proved to be one of the fields where this divergency with regard to the christological definition of Chalcedon has become obvious : doctrine and theory on the one hand, reality of Christian life on the other. The first part of this thesis contains an analytical and critical study of the charismaltic renewal. It was found that mainly ideas about salvation and the status of faith have resulted in this divergency. There is the law of unity of the Hypostatic Union : the systematic interpretations offered by theology do not correspond to charismatic Christian spirituality. It is important to remedy this by reasonably concepts of salvation and faith. The second part therefore attempts to suggest a balance between concrete unity and continued divergency concerning the christological definition of Chalcedon. What matter is transferring the law of unity of the Hypostatical Union into everyday Christian life. The third part shows how the charismatic renewal in Burkina presents an example of cultural adaptation. The conclusion drawn from this stresses the urgent need for better understanding between Christian practice of the charismatic renewal and theological interpretation of faith

Full textThe so called charismatic movements have existed since the day of Pentecost, and the beginning of Christianity. Since the very start, they gave rise to enthousiasm, contempt or rejection. It is true that they manifest spiritual gifts, which are sometimes very strange. The authenticity of which has to be confirmed. Do they come from God or from charlatan and crowd seducers? To study them, we thought il was essential to place them in their historical context: history of their reception by the main streams of the Church, history of their evolution through two or three generations, and history of their filiations, especially between the three pentecostal waves of the XXth century. The heart of our work is to cross those charismatic realities with the ecumenical movement, also born in the XXth century. Do they contribute to bringing Churches closer? Or, on the contrary, do they build new walls within Churches or between them? Our analysis looks at the question from the point of vue of practical theology: we first collected facts, testimonies and interviews. We studied them, looking for both converging and diverging results. We interpreted them through multi-disciplinary reasoning. Our conclusions move more in the direction of new displacements, which are concrete, real, and transdenominationnel rather than institutional. They result in the nead to redefine the Church and its unity

Full textThe leaderships of Alfonsin and Menem refer to a type of authority which, in the political field, was qualified, principally in the weberian acception, of "charismatic". The argentinian case delimited by the dates of 1983 -return of democracy with the election of Alfonsin- and 1989 -political change with the election of Menem- appears, from this point of view, as singular. On one hand, we can observe that the charismatic attestation of Alfonsin and Menem shows itself in the mark of the reappeared democracy in a space of approximately six years only. On the other hand, this charismatic attestation reveals strategies of change which are considered as connected to this ideal-type which Weber has conceptualizde. .

Full textThe thesis investigates the construction of social bonds within Catholic communities in Argentina between 1996 and 2001. The catholic communities that have emerged at the margin of the institution aim at building their own space within catholicism, while maintaning their church membership. The study of the process of construction of a differentiated identity within catholicism focuses, first, on the experiences of individual believers by examining the trajectory of their insertion within the groups, the education structures these groups set up, and the values they promote. Then, it analyzes the construction of the community, by studying the forms of sociability and the structures of authority and government within the group. Finally, it looks at the elaboration of a discourse of memory, articulated around the construction of a representation of the founding event of Christianity, the reconstruction of the 1970s, and the development of a utopian discourse which projects the community in the future. The groups surveyed, which appeared in the 1960s and 1970s in Argentina, are the Renovacion Carismatica Catolica (Catholic Charismatic Renewal), the Seminarios de Formacion Teologica (Theologiscal Training Seminaries), the Fraternidad de Agrupaciones Santo Tomas de Aquino-FASTA (Brotherhood of Saint Thomas Aquinas Groups), and the Instituto del Verbo Encarnado (Institute of the Word made flesh)

Full textIn Reunion Island, pentecostal and charismatic movements have been developing for forty years and their emotional aspect plays a pivotal role in their power of attraction. Encouraging tangible evidence of God’s actions at the expense of dogmas, they contribute to the imprecision of beliefs and the dispersion of religious itineraries, lead to an increase in individualism and encourage a tendency to scission in the Church. Because of all this, they put the church to the test. Nevertheless, an in-depth analysis of these movements in Creole society leads us to question the erosion of institutions, traditions and mediations it relies on. Organising a field survey and conducting interviews has made it possible to highlight several factors which seem to inspire religious experience of an emotional kind.- First, the socio-historical situation of the island, and the religious dynamics that have contributed to the formation of competing pentecostal and charismatic groups which are too different to be treated as part of the same environment.- Then, the groups joined by the faithful, which codify their practices and create their religious « virtuosity »- Finally time, because of which individuals itineraries show different phases of varying intensity. So, religious experience is far from being synonymous exclusively with excitement, immediacy and malleability. Control, socialization and transmission are also important part of it. This study conducted in Reunion Island is at the very heart of this dialectic

Full textBeginning with the study of television program producers, our work proposes an economic sociology of the audiovisual sector as inscribed within a larger reflection on television and its place in the cultural field and on the existence of economic models specific to uncertain transactions. In an historical perspective the study first shows how the producer imposed himself progressively as the agent controlling the manufacturing process of television programs. The "shumpeterien entrepreneur" used as a model allows us to ascertain the way the producer intervenes in the manufacturing of programs. However, the une quai efficiency of the "authority principals" of the entrepreneur forces one to rethink the agent' s interactions within a structural analysis of the professional field. The system of positions built in this manner makes it possible for the producer' s field to be linked to the universe of broadcasted television programs

Full textThe “intellectuals” were born during the Dreyfus lawsuit and, in the beginning, the neologism was used to refer to the cultural vanguard daring enough to defy the reason of State. As a consequence, the intellectuals' traditional ways of political commitment somehow oppose them to the governing elites of whom they tend to become the bad conscience. Thus, according to Pierre Bourdieu: “the intellectual (…) gives rise to a policy of the purity which appears to be the perfect antithesis of the reason of State.” So it seems relevant to focus on those of them who didn't accept this role of criticism and confronted themselves with the reality of power. Furthermore, the intellectuals that we shall study present another characteristic: they supported a charismatic political leader. For several commentators, emotionality and irrationality are essential elements in the definition of charisma. It can thus seem paradoxical to see the members of a certain cultural elite binding to such leaders. In fact, the study of the relations between intellectuals and charismatic personalities can be a way of demystifying this power that remains partly unexplained

Full textIn a general context of modernity and secularization, the emergence of catholic charismatism in France during the 70's is surprising: on one hand, because it shows all the strength of a religious consciousness; on the other hand, despite its protestant roots, it manages to develop with vigour in catholicism, forgetting its original ecumenism. Today's way of studying catholic charismatism offers three elements of dissatisfaction : first, scientific literature seems to privilege the analysis of community structures, forgetting the people who are part of today's charismatic renewal. Secondly, we used to mention “the” catholic charismatism : therefore, in a context of internal diversification in catholicism, could we find several charismatisms in France ? Finally studies that have been done up until now in France don't let us understand what kind of relationships the charismatic renewal members have established between religion and politics. Our methodology is built around thirty-two non-directive interviews, conducted in four large French communities (beatitudes, chemin neuf, pain de vie, fondations du monde nouveau) with volunteers and officials. We also used participating observation and analysed the magazines published by the communities. Then, we tried to understand which charismatic cultures were present in France, analysing their relationships with the Catholic Church, the economy or the politics. Three + symbolic universes ;, appeared which mixed the religious experience, the importance of the community, the representation of society and the image of politics. This typology allowed us to compare these subdivisions with the catholic + integralist ; families described by J. -Marie Donegani

Full textThe "Neo-prophets" of the Internet era, those charismatic leaders who stand out at the head some new economy's companies, have encountered in the space of just a few years, and to the same degree, a state of grace and utter disgrace. Nonetheless, charisma and the charismatic continue to fascinate. This study focuses on French charismatic executives, known for leading radical change. This research makes use of Weber's sociology of domination and his studies of religious virtuosi to analyse the literature concerning charismatic leadership and top management teams. The conceptual framework used for the study of these top executives favours recent research on managerial domination, and adopts the political view of business organisation, which it develops further through an exploration of the charismatic ideal type. Two separate groups of results are presented corresponding with the two determining factors of charisma: belief and relationship of domination, the very factors responsible for triggering the "routinization" of charisma. Two methodologies have been used : one employing the study of social reprentations of charisma and the other the case-study. The first part of this research examines the content of the social representations of charisma and the other the case-study. The first part of this research examines the content of the social representations of charisma and lists the beliefs concerning charismatic top executives. The case study devoted to Jean-Marie Messier allows us to question the effects of belief on the stakeholders of corporate governance. The second part of this research analyses the managerial practice of charismatic executives. We describe how their action is heavily constrained, not only by the belief, always fragile, placed in them, but also and, above all, by competing forms of domination. ; The overall objective of this piece of research is to make a contribution to the Neo-Weberian approach to the organisational sciences and to be an occasion to throw light on the motivation that orientates the actions of contemporary top managers

Full textThis dissertation examines the role of leader self-disclosure of traumatic loss at the metalevel of leadership (i.e., the impact of leadership on large social systems). Sharing publicly this universal experience creates a surprising effect in the eyes of followers and thus fosters follower perceptions of charisma toward the leader. A speech using this verbal tactic engenders follower perceptions of charisma and associated variables (i.e., follower perceptions of leader affect, leader trust, leader competence and leader ability to influence) compared to a speech not using it. Moreover, this effect should be stronger for female leaders than for male leaders, thereby illustrating a situation where being a female leader is advantageous. Chapter 1 presents the introductory part. Chapter 2 constitutes the literature review of this dissertation. Chapter 3 establishes the theoretical frameworks used and hypotheses. Chapters 4 to 8 examine the effect of leader self-disclosure on perceptions of charisma and related outcomes: a series of between-subjects laboratory experiments of Master students, compares a leader self-disclosure condition group and control group. The influence of follower sex and leader gender are also manipulated. Overall, the results support the idea that the use of public self-disclosure of traumatic loss evokes powerful influence on perceptions of charisma and its related outcomes, and this effect is more prevalent for female leaders than for male leaders

Full text« The Tower of Babel » or rather “cultural community” (Raymond Mbédé), Cameroon offers to this description and analysis an amazing social complexity. This is the case for the principal Christian groups which interact, collaborate and sometimes wonder about their different ways of thinking and social life. The way that the various members of these different groups experience each other is precisely the subject of the present thesis. The author explains why he refers traditional Catholics to the theoretical model known as “orthodoxy” which is highly institutionalized with a strong social regulating system (Jean-Pierre Deconchy); why he considers Pentecotists as related to what has been called “external protestation”, a counter system probably tending towards “re-orthodoxization”; and why he considers the so called charismatic Catholics as related to what has been called “internal protestation” (Joachim Wach). The author also makes an extensive international analysis of several psychosocial studies which impact on themes such as perception, evaluation and intergroup relationships. To evaluate the basis of articulation between this typology and studies in social psychology, the author undertook three experiments, all realized in Cameroon. The first study establishes how members of the three groups perceive social regulations adopted by other groups in view of their own system of regulation (N= 270). The second attempts to understand the occupation of common territorial space and how each of the groups organises the defence of its identity with regard to the danger the other groups represent (N = 900). The third questions how in the three groups members are accessible to the idea of modifying their basic religious beliefs (that they adopt without reservation) in order to adjust to new social contexts (N = 216)

Full textThis thesis will explore, through the charismatic cycle and by a comparison with Nasserism, the relationship between the charisma and the maintain of the state-building. The first step of the cycle is the pre-charismatic period. It concerns an acute crisis of the patrimonial state that ultimately leads to the question of sovereignty, revealing in turn the charismatic qualities of the leader. The charismatic career, meanwhile, is closely associated with the charismatic assertion. The exceptional situation allows establishing the popular will through a charismatic leader appointed by the nation to lead the country to independence. The revolution from above suggests both the passage from the empire to the republic and the transfer of power in favor of a new oligarchy of bureaucrats and military officers. The transition to an authoritarian situation leads to the tutelary state dominance supporting the modernization of society and pursueing conservative socialization on the political level. Finally, the post-charismatic period is associated with the routinization of charisma, the step in which the institutionalization of the state is shaped. During this step, the passage from limited pluralism to a greater pluralism has not initiated the tutelary shadow that Atatürk exerted on the Turkish political system. If the Praetorians have renounced the direct exercise of power and if the Republican Party has lost its hegemony, the Kemalist legacy is sufficiently strong to structure a political space that opens increasingly to civil society
Joffres, Adeline. "Le populisme comme matrice de la politique extérieure : Le cas du Venezuela." Thesis, Paris 3, 2013. http://www.theses.fr/2013PA030139.
Full textThis thesis aims to show evidence for existing correlations between populist charismatic leadership and the Venezuelan foreign policy, whilst these two topics are traditionally considered independently from each other. The geo-historical study of the construction of the Venezuelan nation state in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries explains its « corporate identity ». The state precedes the nation that builds up from external conflict and mutual recognition, for dominant political leadership reasons (personalistic and / or authoritarian), and to overcome the trauma caused by the conflict and the failure of the unifying supranational project (Gran Colombia) by mythifying political representations of the people and power. This process suggests the shaping of a populist political matrix aiming to complete this identity by prolonging the appeal to the people, both inside and outside the country. The work then focuses on mechanisms aiming at building and routinizing Hugo Chávez Frías’s charismatic and populist leadership. It also studies the broadcasting channels and the globalization of this type of leadership which are similar to the « Bolivarian » multiple diplomacy. Thus, the people are no longer just a group of Venezuelan nationals but a much wider « Bolivarian » community. Populism is no longer conceived as a moment nor considered as expressing itself exclusively within the country, but as a global system that feeds as much as it is fed from others and from the outside. Foreign policy can thus be analyzed in terms of a transnationalized policy

Full textI base my research on a fairly complete collection of pastor’s Dallière writings that I have assembled and digitized (see the CD-rom), presenting some of the main themes in the theology of Louis Dallière (1897-1976), a pastor in the Reformed church of France. After a biographical sketch of his life, I present his critique of Idealist philosophies and its impact on Protestant theology. I present Louis Dallière's larger objective of establishing a more concrete and confessional ecclesiology, including his rethinking of the practice of baptism, especially infant baptism. Convinced that the era of Christianity was coming to an end, he called for a renewed practice of the immersion of confessing believers. Because he supported the beginnings of Pentecostalism he also believed in a renewal of spiritual charisms within church life. I also explore the larger purpose of his call for a renewed confessing church to prepare for Christ's Second Coming, with his consequent re-appropriation of eschatology without the excesses of some apocalyptic movements. In each of our chapters I place L. Dallière in his ecclesiological and theological context. In my conclusion I explore the relevance of Dallière’s insights for our current theologies

The thesis will try to embodied the identity of the Reformed tradision by give an overview , look into the questions regarding reformed tradition, what does it mean to be Reformed and proud and also what Reformed use of scripture entails. Allthough it is not the first time that questions like this has been raised, because reformed in the tradition means , to change contantaniously. Pentecostalism on the other side does have a long history regarding orgin and was not just an "appearnce" in the church. The apostle Paul in the early days of the church was in a certain sence very specific obout the gifts of the Holy Spirit and the space for exploration as set out in "1 Korinthians 12." Over the years many enthusiastic movements appeared which led to a total misunderstanding of what Pauls understanding was regarding pentecotalism. Regarding Pentacostalism, and the judging of the movement , the church will have to view their concerns very strongly in terms of the following, appreciation, make accesment regarding their weakness, thoughtfullness and their plan of action. Then the paradigm shifts, ecclesiasticly and liturgical deepening are essential factors in the whole enlightenment towards a more adopting mode. To change does not necesarilly mean to throw all the norms and vallues over board, but to do so in a responsible way. The worship service become in that matter the focal point of attention, including all the elements within the service , searching for ways to improve , ad or adapt. What the worship service is and are suppose to be , a trully place where God allone are been worship and where the Holy Spirittransformes people into living witnesses. The thesis conclude with a usefull set off guidelines according to Thomas Long in his book Beyond the worship wars where he challenge the church to a more transforming way of being church of God.

Full textEnvironmental education is one of the main tools to overcome the current loss of biodiversity. Media and school occupy a central place to educate public, but they broadcast almost exclusively messages based on few spectacular and exotic animals (polar bear, whales…). Scholar education has a crucial role to promote knowledge, awareness, of schoolchildren and thus their willingness to protect a wide range of organisms, including less popular species. Using written questionnaires, we surveyed in ten different countries on Europe 7, Africa 1, and Asia 2, the perceptions of schoolchildren aged from 6 to 14 years for animals. The outcome is alarming: schoolchildren are disconnected from their local environment. Mirroring media, schoolchildren can list very few animal species requiring protection which they watched on TV screens. However, a survey of the perception of schoolchildren for snakes showed a moderate aversion level and a clear willingness to protect them, a surprising and encouraging result. We brought almost 600 children to discover native snakes through field experiences. Via the activation of the affective channel, almost all the children expressed their willingness to protect snakes, at the same level than panda and other loveable species. This study reveals the failure of the scholar educational system that focuses on dogmatic message, virtual information and intellectual approach to the detriment of field trips and physical contact with wildlife. A concrete approach of biodiversity is however essential and urgent to reconnect children with their local environment. Our results reinforce the (so far) fruitless message that schoolchildren should be bring into the field to generate positive attitude and behaviour toward the protection of the biodiversity. Environmental education should not neglect unpopular organisms declared. To progress, significant efforts must be produced to not limit conservation messages and actions to few iconic species

Full textThis thesis aims at analysing, in the contemporary world (1980-2013), the trajectory of catholicism, in the wake of microhistory, through the study of its actors, its territories and its communities, the modes of ecclesial government. We will highlight the paradox of the fabric of the local Church which expands and fragments, but also contracts and polarizes, forcing the Ordinary, in his government, to think of a paradigm shift: from the challenge of proximity to the one of unity, taking into account the plurality of communities and associated territories. To support our analyses, we will study the dioceses of Rennes, Autun and Frejus-Toulon. A shift from the logic of enclosures to the dynamics of a centralizing pole will be apprehended, sometimes in tension, by Church actors, in the light of four issues structuring the argument: « biotope » (rural/urban), community diversity, activism and the question of identity (status of clerics, co-responsibility, modalities of evangelization, communautarism...).History and social geography will enable us to renew the problems of spatial and religious belonging by starting from questions about the territory according to precise indicators: networks of the faithful and militants, the contribution of new communities (numbers, pastoral strategies, government), episcopal options in favour of a particular territory or ecclesial group... For the historian, space can be considered as a heuristic tool, in which changes of scale have been imposed in short time. By delimiting our research (1980-2013), we want to focus on the interior of aeras that no longer possess the relative homogeneity that history lent them before the 20th century. Our research are presented in a three-part structure. The first part is intended above all to be contextual, in the light of postmodernity and secularization, which modify the modes of belonging to a religion declared by many in palliative care. We will analyse the close links between Catholicism and its modes of territorial integration (rural/urban) from our dioceses of reference. We will present the recompositions of the forms of militancy in the diocese of Rennes, a breeding ground for Catholic Action that is increasingly sterile and leaving room for very urban familyist militancy. The second part of this thesis will address the issues of ecclesial governance in our three dioceses of study. We will study, in the short time, the evolution of the « munus regendi » of bishops and priests with the crossing of generations; with the principle of co-responsibility and the differentiated development according to the dioceses of the permanent diaconate and of the laity in ecclesial mission. We will particularly develop the Toulon case for which few in-depth studies have been carried out. Finally, the third part will focus on the problem of the growing development of a polarized Catholic witness in search of visibility. We will analyze the genesis of the Renewal and its trajectory in the diocese of Rennes. We will look particularly at the Emmanuel community, its promotion of the new evangelization and the fundamentalism of its pastoral modes. Then, with a certain priestly fruitfulness and a chaotic dialogue with Rome (Motu proprio in 1988 and 2007), the very heterogeneous traditionalist galaxy remains the framework of contemporary mutations that we will study in the dioceses of Rennes and Autun. Finally, we will change scale by focusing on the city-sanctuary of Paray-le-Monial, militant pole and laboratory incubator of a « new Catholicism », on the articulation between the various territories (city, sanctuary, parish) and the actors in place

Full textThis work is a theological reflection on supplying canonical notion. Supplying is restricted to executive power of governance (can. 144). Hence we study the link between supplying process and "potestas sacra" and the application requirements to laypersons. We make an inventory of some cases in which the salvation of souls is bound. Their theological analysis establishes an ecclesiology of the exception from the saying : necessitas non habet legem, the membership of Church and the status of some ecclesial communities. The subsistit in and the notion of communion are clarifying. The ecclesiology of the exception is the proper field of supplying process which also occurs into the Institution through sensus fidei and charismas. Hence a reappraisal of the adage : « no salvation outside the Church ». Supplying process is an hermeneutical criterion useful to exegesis (Galatians : Paul’s place) and history (Tertullian, Cyprian : lack of potestas sacra as irreducible limit of suppletory exercise)

Full textThis PhD is based on a qualitative, empirical and epistemological approach relied on interviews, self-administered questionnaire and ethnographic observation. The analysis of gender relationships and representations of female pastoral labor in the Pentecostal churches is the main topic of this research. We are looking for life stories items and commitment in a pastoral or episcopal female vocation inasmuch to understand gendered dimension and the motives of the young ladies to look for such a well known male profession for which they have been banned for centuries. This religion of the Reborn seems to give an opportunity for climbing the social ladder and awakens the desire for material goods and spiritual prosperity. Many questions are at stake with the female pastoral vocation. How to interpret the ease with which one becomes a pastor (how shall we figure out) the fact that it is very easy to become a pastor in the Democratic Republic of Congo ? How to define the current female role of pastors or bishops ? How to understand the permanent tension between the female vocation, the social stereotypes and the linked body alienation ? Although, they must have leadership roles that have always been the privilege of the male clerics ? Facing the current challenges of a changing society, how do they combine faith, femininity, leadership and professional skills ? What are the roles of pastors and bishops when they belong to the female sex ? Does the hieratic function change in this case ? What are the new dimensions of the religious profession practice ? Are they more concerned with social or family issues ? Do they refer to personal intimacy or to a new dimension of the sacred ? This PhD is trying to answer all these questions. It shows moreover new faces of the religious profession practice through the coming out of female pastors and bishops. It provides new indications regarding the religious changes that have taken place in recent years in Sub- Saharan Africa in general and in DR Congo in particular

Full textThe Catholic charimatic renewal puts forward a personal encounter wtih God on the believer’s part, who is then habilitated to exercize different charismas – among which we find healing through the imposing of the hands, glossolalia and revelations. Continued participation in an organized religious group by now autonomous believers has not yet been the subject of sustained academic attention. The present study of a Montreal Catholic charismatic renewal’s center of prayer, whose methodology is inspired by the phenomenological and experiential approaches, aims to develop this problematic, all the while marking a distance with a purely rhetorical understanding of the charismatic experience (Csordas 1997, 2001). The religious socialization (Fer 2005, 2007) framing the admission of a new member at the Center, enligthens the invisible institutionnal mecanisms enabling the integration of a religious community all the while paradoxically enabling the individual to live an individualized religious experience. The charismatic subject, religiously socialized through a conversion lived in a unification of the body-mind, develops new somatic modes of attention, and is thus enabled to experience different intersubjectivities. The subject comes to participate in a collective world of representations and sensations, developing in parallel an increased agency in his dealings with the sacred. Although agency is usually conceived as an act of resistance, the one developped by the charismatics brings about the reproduction of the norm (Mahmood 2001). Religious socialization establishing the parameter of emergence for this agency, it is also the frame circonscribing its expression.

Full textThis thesis concerns the religious hybridities between Catholicism and Pentecostalism in two congregations in Montreal. Faced with the gaps in the research regarding the influence of Catholicism on Neopentecostalism, we have compared certain strategies of a multi-ethnic Charismatic Neopentecostal Church with the strategies of a Latin American Catholic Charismatic community, in order to explain how these hybridities manifest in the congregations. Some hybridities are found in the adaptation of these communities to the Quebec context and in the adaptation of the Gospel and the religious practices that mark the process of integration of immigrants into the congregations and the host society. The charismatic communities become epicenters of ethnic groupings in which we can observe continuities, transformations and cultural innovations. In my field work in these two groups, I have found evidence regarding the influence of Catholicism on the Neopentecostalism and vice versa, as well as syncretic interpenetrations.

Hofmann, David C. "A historical case study analysis of the establishment of charismatic leadership in a Protestant Reformation cultic group and its role in the recourse to violence." Thèse, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/1866/5896.
Full textResearch surrounding questions regarding cultic behaviors, leadership and issues of sectarian violence has lead to the study of charismatic leadership. Prominent cultic scholars have identified that there remains a rather large void in research when analyzing charismatic leadership within the context of sectarian groups and new religious movements. This thesis will attempt to bridge that gap through a historical case study analysis of a 16th century protestant reformation group, the Anabaptist Kingdom of Münster (AKM), under the influence of a charismatic leader, Jan van Leiden. More specifically, this research will focus on the various means utilized by the group’s leader, to establish charismatic leadership and how this affected the group’s recourse to acts of violence. The case material was obtained through two primary source accounts from participants in the events that unfolded in Münster during Leiden’s reign. The analysis of this material was made using three current theoretical concepts on cultic behavior and violence, that is Casoni (2000), Robbins (2002) and Dawson (2010). It appears that four major strategies were utilized by Jan van Leiden to establish his charismatic leadership over his followers: (1) the threat of millenarianism, (2) the exploitation of a bilateral parasitic relationship with his followers, (3) the use of religious ecstasy and prophecy, and (4) the use of their desire for social and religious change. By contrasting the results of the analyses undertaken in chapters three and four, three factors that have played a crucial role in Leiden’s charismatic leadership, as it relates to the recourse to violence in the AKM, will be identified. These are: (1) millennial violence, (2) shared identity, and (3) macro-level dimensions.

Full textSouth Africa is a culturally diverse country, which is becoming more and more complex due to secular influences like globalisation and the influx of African migrants. As different ethnic groups are integrated in South African communities, pastors are faced with new challenges to develop multicultural congregations, that reflect the demography of the community. Pastors also face challenges with regards to the interaction of men and women, as well as the interaction of various age groups. The handling of current challenges will however not be effective without an understanding of the painful exclusion of various ethnic groups and women from certain ministry and leadership positions that characterised the Pentecostal history. The lack of mentorship from generation to generation also led to generation gaps. In order to provide pastors of multicultural Pentecostal-Charismatic congregations with guidelines to handle these challenges, it was necessary to give a rich description of the challenges that pastors themselves experiece with regards to the interaction of various ethnic groups, men and women as well as the interaction of various age groups in multicultural congregations. The description of the challenges that pastors of multicultural Pentecostal- Charismatic congregations face, as well as giving guidelines in handling these challenges, formed the research goals of the study. The qualitative model of practical theological reflection developed by Swinton and Mowat (2006), was used to guide the research process. In the first stage of the research process, a literature study was done to describe the multicultural context of Pentecostal-Charismatic congregations. The study took place against the background of the Pentecostal history. This led to a description of the DNA of Pentecost, that explained how unity in the initial Pentecostal movements gained momentum through the work of the Holy Spirit. A description of the Pentecostal history also explained how the introduction of formal structures, as well as a shift from the missionary task of Christ to an inward focus on the vii preferences of certain people and groups led to the division of believers, based on ethnicity, gender and age. Challenges are also faced with the current integration of various ethnic groups, men and women, as well as different age groups. In the second stage of the research process, qualitative research was used to explore and to describe the challenges that pastors of multicultural congregations face. The themes that were identified by the study, were compared to current literature as well as Scriptural guidelines in the third stage of the study. In the final stage, new practices were given to aid pastors in handling the challenges of multicultural Pentecostal-Charismatic congregations. These practices include a return to the original DNA of Pentecost, a strong theological and cultural grounding, as well as the implementation of practical guidelines under the guidance of the Holy Spirit. The study was concluded with the unique contributions of the study to the field of Practical Theology and by making recommendations for further research.
