Abstract:
It is inevitable that works on waqf written in English will employ terms from Anglo-American law to describe that institution. This study will endeavour to provide a proper understanding of these terms in order to clear up longstanding misconceptions of the nature of waqf. Through a detailed history of the Anglo-American law of endowments and its terminology, this study will create a framework through which it may be possible to obtain a clearer understanding of waqf. The study will also address two historical events in which the Islamic and Anglo-American legal conceptions of endowments have been at odds, as well as address the objections that have been raised to the continued existence of waqf , both from within Muslim society and from without. It is hoped that through this study a better appreciation of the utility of waqf for Muslim society will be achieved.

Abstract:
Foundation is considered as one of the main parts of any structure such as buildings, railways, bridges, etc. The type of foundation used is highly dependent on the type and properties of soil. The design of foundations requires many factors that should be defined such as the load that the foundation is going to hold, geological conditions of the soil under the foundation, type of soil and the local building code criteria. There are number of differences in the geological and soil conditions in Iraq. As a consequence, these differences are reflected on the type of foundation to be used. Despite these differences, same materials and style of buildings are used all over Iraq. To have good information about the materials and the required design of the foundation, a comprehensive historical review was executed to highlight the progress of the materials and types of foundation that was used since the dawn of civilization up to the present (ancient, Islamic, Ottoman and British occupation till after independent). Present day situation had been analysed through a case study which illustrated the link between soil and foundation types in three different parts of Iraq (Mosul, Baghdad and Basrah). One building was analysed using STAAD. Pro software in these regions. Furthermore, the same building was analysed using local materials, which were historically used and was compared with present day materials used.It is evident that Iraqi designers and engineers require local code to define all the loads, materials and design of the foundation to be used. The use of local materials might be very effective from both engineering and economic perspectives.

Abstract:
Educational Administration
Ed.D.
Local Education Foundations (LEFs), non-profit organizations that are closely associated with and in support of their local schools, have become a key resource in meeting the needs of today's students in public education. The purpose of this case study is to examine two LEFs in suburban Philadelphia, identify keys to their success or failure, and discuss their impact on and struggles in helping students in their communities. The theoretical frameworks of Overlapping Spheres of Influence and the Ethic of Community are applied to gain further insight into LEFs and will support the literature and research findings. The research questions that were answered are what is the perceived impact of Local Education Foundations on students and what are key indicators of a successful Local Education Foundation. Literature regarding the origins, goals, structures, and methods of fundraising, how their funds are distributed, outcomes, benefits, and limitations is examined. Pertinent documents about selected LEFs were gathered, observations of LEF board meetings were made, and interviews were conducted with many stakeholders, including LEF members, school district personnel, families, and donors. Based on the collected data, both LEFs embodied the three traits of a successful LEF as identified in the literature. Both have also made an impact on their community through scholarships and programs.

Cooper, Daphne C. "The foundations of affective development : proactive involvement of the educational psychologist." Master's thesis, University of Cape Town, 1991. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/14246.

Full text
Abstract:
Includes bibliography.
In this thesis the foundations of affective development are discussed. The context of development is considered to be the relationship between infant and caregiver. The theoretical bases of developmental psychology and the practice of clinical psychology have been drawn on and applied to a model of promotive and preventive work. Affective development may be enhanced by psychologists, and it is therefore important for them to consider promotion of mental health as well as more traditional ways of therapeutic intervention. A survey was done in four infant clinics in Cape Town, and had the aim of establishing whether health care workers in this context were doing anything to promote affective development. There seemed to be minimal intervention in this regard. The second aim of the research section of this thesis addressed the question of whether there might be a place within the clinic structures for educational psychologists. To this end groups of caregivers were set up, and a pilot promotive programme was administered and evaluated over five sessions. In general the response of the mothers was positive. In the final chapter some of the particular strains that are placed on South African families are considered. Finally recommendations and ideas for establishing programmes that seek to promote affective development in contexts other than clinics are discussed.

Abstract:
Research demonstrates high effectiveness with teaching skills that align to grade-level standards. This curriculum provides materials at three literacy levels: object/photo, symbols, and text. Skill areas include persuasive writing, elements of story grammar, and research endeavors. The authors adapted 15 popular works (like Holes, Number the Stars, and Dragonwings) into simplified text with repeated story lines and symbol supports. Genres include fiction, nonfiction, plays, and poetry. The 32 progressive lessons are scripted and incorporate evidencebased teaching procedures. They are organized into four units: Change, Values and Decision Making, Social Justice, and Global Awareness. These themes help students grasp the big ideas as well as specific ELA skills. The curriculum seamlessly integrates traditional formats, like books and manipulatives, with the software and iPad app. This blended approach helps you to teach all students effectively and creates an engaging learning process. In the software and app, students explore eight works of literature through a five-step instructional sequence: preview, vocabulary, read the book, comprehension questions, and story sequence. The curriculum now comes with two new components, including the consumable Daily Writing Journal Student Workbook and the Task Analysis Teacher Extension Book. Curriculum Includes: The Implementation Guide, Alignment to Standards booklet, two Teacher’s Guides, one Assessment Response Book, one Student Response Book, Right On Readers 1 and 2, one Daily Writing Journal Student Book, one consumable Daily Writing Journal Student Workbook, graphic organizers, 250 teaching cards, PDFs on disc with a classroom license for printouts, a Task Analysis Teacher Extension Book, and the Access Language Arts Software and iPad App. Curriculum Plus Includes: the Teaching to Standards: ELA Curriculum plus a total of 10 consumable Daily Writing Journal Student Workbooks, the GoWorksheet Maker iPad App, a set of GoWorksheet activities, samples of communications overlays, four sets of the Right On Readers, and one copy of Holes, We Beat the Street, The Outsiders, Number the Stars, and Dragonwings.

Abstract:
This thesis explores educational pluralism in the context of the American public school system and analyzes the charter school movement as a mechanism for education reform. Because charter schools have only existed for 26 years, scholars have yet to understand the effect that they have on our public school system, as well as how they compare with traditional public schools. Rather than trying to determine whether charter schools are better than traditional public schools, I introduce the philosophy behind educational pluralism, examine the evolution of the charter school movement, and analyze states as laboratories for testing new educational practices through charter schools.

Daly, Marwa El. "Challenges and potentials of channeling local philanthropy towards development and aocial justice and the role of waqf (Islamic and Arab-civic endowments) in building community foundations." Doctoral thesis, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, Philosophische Fakultät III, 2012. http://dx.doi.org/10.18452/16511.

Full text
Abstract:
This work provides a solid theoretical base on philanthropy, religious giving (Islamic zakat, ‘ushour, Waqf -plural: awqaf-, Sadaqa and Christian tithes or ‘ushour), and their implications on giving trends, development work, social justice philanthropy. The field study (quantitative and qualitative) that supports the theoretical framework reflects at a national level the Egyptian public’s perceptions on philanthropy, social justice, human rights, giving and volunteering and other concepts that determine the peoples’ civic engagement. The statistics cover 2000 households, 200 Civil Society Organizations distributed all over Egypt and interviews donors, recipients, religious people and other stakeholders. The numbers reflect philanthropic trends and for the first time provide a monetary estimate of local philanthropy of over USD 1 Billion annually. The survey proves that the per capita share of philanthropy outweighs the per capita share of foreign economic assistance to Egypt, which implies the significance of local giving if properly channeled, and not as it is actually consumed in the vicious circle of ad-hoc, person to person charity. In addition, the study relates local giving mechanisms derived from religion and culture to modern actual structures, like community foundations or community waqf that could bring about sustainable change in the communities. In sum, the work provides a comprehensive scientific base to help understand- and build on local philanthropy in Egypt. It explores the role that local individual giving could play in achieving sustainable development and building a new wave of community foundations not only in Egypt but in the Arab region at large. As a tangible result of this thesis, an innovative model that revives the concept of waqf and builds on the study’s results was created by the researcher and a dedicated board of trustees who succeeded in establishing Waqfeyat al Maadi Community Foundation (WMCF) that not only introduces the community foundation model to Egypt, but revives and modernizes the waqf as a practical authentic philanthropic structure.

Abstract:
External representations (ERs), such as diagrams, animations, and dynamic models are vital tools for communicating and constructing knowledge in biochemistry. To build a meaningful understanding of structure, function, and process, it is essential that students become visually literate by mastering key cognitive skills that are essential for interpreting and visualizing ERs. In this article, first we describe a model of seven factors influencing students’ ability to learn from ERs. Second, we use this model and relevant literature to identify eight cognitive skills central to visual literacy in biochemistry. Third, we present simple examples of tasks as a foundation for designing more sophisticated and complex items for assessing and developing students’ visual literacy. We conclude that visual literacy is fundamental to the development of sound conceptual understanding and it is crucial to develop visual skills in parallel with meaningful learning outcomes in all biochemistry curricula.

Abstract:
Book Summary: A teacher’s ability to manage the classroom strongly influences the quality of teaching and learning that can be accomplished. Among the most pressing concerns for inexperienced teachers is classroom management, a concern of equal importance to the general public in light of behavior problems and breakdowns in discipline that grab newspaper headlines. But classroom management is not just about problems and what to do when things go wrong and chaos erupts. It’s about how to run a classroom so as to elicit the best from even the most courteous group of students. An array of skills is needed to produce such a learning environment. The SAGE Encyclopedia of Classroom Management raises issues and introduces evidence-based, real-world strategies for creating and maintaining well-managed classrooms where learning thrives. Students studying to become teachers will need to develop their own classroom management strategies consistent with their own philosophies of teaching and learning. This work aims to open their eyes to the range of issues and the array of skills they might integrate into their unique teaching styles.
