The waste lands concept was an important part of the colonial project, gaining particular traction in the 1850s. Its initial implementation in New Zealand was begun in the 1840s, underpinning a strongly economic approach to settlement favoured by the owners and proprietors of the New Zealand Company. In the 2012 version of this symposium I presented a paper that explored how images of New Zealand's landscape in the 1850s could be analysed in light of the concept, with a particular focus on Crown/Māori relationships. Citizens who are deterred from using services by the charge will suffer an adverse health impact. And citizens who use the service will suffer a loss of wealth. Abstract:
The present study aimed to compare pulmonary vein (PV) diameters between Cavalier King Charles Spaniels (CKCSs) with myxomatous mitral valve disease (MMVD) and healthy CKCSs, assess correlations between PV diameters and echocardiographic parameters, and identify the optimal PV diameter cut-off value that distinguishes stage C from stage B2. CKCSs were recruited both retrospectively and prospectively and classified according to the ACVIM guidelines (stages A, B1, B2, and C). From a left apical view, the diameters of three PVs (PV1, PV2, and PV3) were measured with high reproducibility. In healt

Industrial discharge has tremendously increased inorganic pollutants in water bodies all over the world. Paper and pulp effluent is included in one of the most pollution generating discharges containing complex chemical compounds such as lignin. For clean and healthy water resources, the recovery of lignin from wastewater from the paper and pulp industry is of high importance. Available chemical and biological technologies for removal of lignin have certain drawbacks. Coagulation and flocculation is not only the economic but also the effective method for removal of lignin. The cell-penetrating peptide (CPP) penetratin (PEN) has garnered attention for its potential to enter tumor cells. However, its translocation mechanism and lack of selectivity remain debated. This study investigated PEN’s insertion into healthy cells (H-) and cancer cells (C-) using micromolar concentrations and various techniques. Raman spectroscopy was used to determine PEN’s location in the lipid bilayer at different lipid-to-peptide ratios. Dynamic light scattering (DLS) and zeta potential analysis were used to measure the lipid–PEN complex’s size and charge. The results showed helical PEN

Near the end of their lives, the poets Jorge Luis Borges and Seamus Heaney both translated the Old English poem Deor. Medieval Germanic literature was an object of deep ambivalence for these poets, and their identification with Deor, the poem's eponymous scop, charges their translations with a sense of preemptive self-mourning. Analyzing the structure of the poem, particularly its refrain, “That passed over, this can too,” reveals a chronological framework in which the reader's temporality forms a legible outer limit enclosing the poem as a whole. Abstract Global long-term care (LTC) issues become complex with diverse aging process. China’s population has entered deep and accelerated aging stage with multiple health status, which has heterogeneity among population with different features. However, overlooking the biases of multistate characteristics of aging due to lack of systematic methodology would affect LTC policies. Therefore, this study simulates the complex LTC demand by estimating life expectancy with disability and structure of disability population under different demographic scenarios, and compares China’s LTC demands with t

Older adults in China experienced periods of dramatic political and social unrest in early life, as well as economic transformations leading to drastic improvements in living standards during adulthood and older age. However, the implications of life course socioeconomic status (SES) trajectories for healthy longevity in later life have not been systematically studied in China.
