Charles Spencer Chaplin has meant for cinematography, as much as, let’s say, Van Gogh for painting. Contemporary with the beginning of “the art of moving images”, the director, the producer, the composer and the actor Chaplin is the creator of the first cinema character, Charlot, the one who made the first movie viewers smile. Yet, beyond the aspects related to the aesthetics of the cinema and the emotions transmitted by the inhabitants of the shadows behind the screen, the movie brings about a language, a body, a brain. Charles Chaplin is recognised as a master of comedy, and his unique film style is widely discussed. However, the formation of his style went through a long process. This article uses the documentary research method to gather and review relevant information on the two films, “City Lights” and “Modern Times”, analyse Chaplin’s unique film styles of the 1920s-1930s, and examine the sources of these styles. This article concludes that his films in the 1920s-1930s formed a mixed story style of sorrow and joy, contained themes with personal views, and expanded visual styles for the theme. Chaplin’s

It combines empirical research into massamusement history with close readings of Chaplin’s early films in order to illuminate the close and previously minimally explored relationship between Chaplin’s filmmaking and popularity on the one hand, and the broader early twentieth-century history of mass-amusement culture on the other.
