Abstract:
Michael Sims’ book called The Story of Charlotte’s Web makes no mention of Opal Whiteley or her famous diary, published in 1920. Instead, Sims turns to the well-recognized connection between E.B. White's Charlotte's Web (1952) and his essay, "Death of a Pig," written some four years earlier. In the essay, White describes the loss of a pig whose life he had tried to save, and his description of the autobiographical origins of Charlotte's Web strongly suggests that his earlier experience with a pig who had died of natural causes is what convinced him that he “needed a way to save a pig’s life.” This essay argues, nevertheless, for another intertext for Charlotte’s Web, namely the diary of Opal Whiteley (1920), a seven-year-old girl who loved and lost a pig called Peter Paul Rubens.

Abstract:
e4323070This article presents an excerpt, from a broader research that was focused on understanding the relationship with school knowledge that young students presented during the context of student school occupation, on the occasion of the “School Reorganization” proposal of the state of São Paulo in 2015. Starting from a qualitative methodology, and using two data collection instruments - interview and textual production. In this work, the interpretation of interviews carried out with two high school students from two state schools in the city of São Carlos who were involved in this occupation is known because they are contrary to that government policy. The result led us to affirm that these two young students involved in the occupation were mobilized by school knowledge, since the dimensions: 'social, identity and epistemic', which make up Bernard Charlot's theory, were identified in the students' speeches/writings. Therefore, in the case of the 'social dimension of knowledge', the aspects identified are those that are related to the school space, their socializations, their political views and, the notion of collectivity they express, their understanding of the importance of the family and the relationship itself teacher Student. The ‘epistemic dimension with knowledge’, the particularities associated with it, are those that have to do with the pedagogical aspects, the very activity carried out by the young person and his most diverse learnings. Finally, the elements that characterize the ‘identity dimension with knowledge’ are related to your expectations of the future, as well as your understandings of self-image and understanding that characterize your personal tastes. Palavras-chave: Relação com o saber, Jovens estudantes, Ensino Médio, Reorganização EscolarKeywords: Relationship with knowledge, Young students, High school, School reorganization.ReferencesANDES. Abstract:
Matthew Heitzman, “‘He Resembled the Great Emperor’: Charlotte Brontë, Villette, and the Rise of Napoleon III” (pp. 199–223) This essay offers a local historical context for Charlotte Brontë’s Villette (1853), reading it in relation to the rise of Napoleon III as Emperor of France. Napoleon III completed his ascendancy just as Brontë was completing her novel. His rise prompted a mixture of anxiety and optimism in the English press, as English political commentators were uncertain if this new Napoleon’s reign would mark a return to the Anglo-French nationalist strife of the first Napoleonic period or if his rule would mark a détente and productive path forward for Anglo-French relations. I argue that this ambiguity is coded into Brontë’s characterization of Monsieur Paul Emanuel, and that we can read Monsieur Paul’s romance with Lucy Snowe as a political allegory—Brontë’s attempt to decipher what Napoleon III’s rapid rise meant for Anglo-French relations. I suggest in this essay that Brontë’s interest in the contemporary Anglo-French political context was a product of her fascination with Napoleon Bonaparte, specifically his rivalry with the Duke of Wellington, and that understanding her interest in the first Napoleonic period can help us to decipher why her depiction of Anglo-French nationalist interaction in Villette is totally at odds with her other novels, where French nationalism is typically a trait that needs to be effaced.

Abstract:

Abstract:
After living in Ngaramtoni for five years, Charlotte and Pete buy a vacant piece of rocky land in Embaseni village near Arusha, in the tribal land of the Meru people. Pete and Charlotte O’Neal construct a multi-building compound consisting of their home, guest house, dormitories for visiting students, dining facility, classrooms, workshops, and a home for over twenty underprivileged Tanzanian children. They establish friendly relations with the Meru and work to bring piped water and electricity to parts of the village. With financial help from Omar Jamal, a Washington, D.C., businessman, they create the United African American Community Center to promote Tanzanian development and share Tanzanian traditions with Americans. In separate interviews, Pete and Charlotte assess their lives and experience raising a family in Tanzania. Pete also describes meeting attorney Paul Magnarella and asking him to review his 1970 trial.

French Revolutionary Jean-Paul Marat became an icon when his friend Jacques-Louis David painted his death at the hand of Charlotte Corday (and because of Peter Weiss’s play The Persecution and Assassination of Jean-Paul Marat as Performed by the Inmates of the Asylum at Charenton under the direction of the Marquis de Sade), but most people know little more about him. Certainly it is not widely known that he was an enthusiastic student of optics. He experimented with a proto-diffraction grating, challenged the assumptions of Newton, and that demonstrated the visibility of heated air rising from various surfaces, including Benjamin Franklin’s bald head.

Abstract:
In Villette, Charlotte Brontë’s narrator Lucy Snowe experiments with what can be read as gendered sadistic and masochistic roles before discovering in M. Paul a mutually masochistic partner. With Ginevra Fanshawe, Lucy dabbles in sadism in the abuse she doles out whereas with Dr. John, Lucy performs as the traditional courted woman who relishes an apparently inactive position as the feminine object of courtship. This relationship with Dr. John is her trial with the kind of inherent female masochism psychoanalysts and sexologists identify as endemic to the female experience. Unsurprisingly, these relationships fail and the satisfaction Lucy yields from them is fleeting and insubstantial. By falling for M. Paul, Lucy is able to successfully link the two worlds with which she previously flirted—the typically female masochistic realm and the conventionally male sadistic realm.

Abstract:
The introduction considers how a former terrorist dealt with the legacy of the Revolution. A macabre incident relating to the remains of Charlotte Corday, who murdered the journalist Jean-Paul Marat, sets up a discussion of how Alexandre Rousselin wanted his participation in the Revolution remembered. He wanted a reputation not as a perpetrator of the Terror, but as someone who resisted it by trying to save his mentors Camille Desmoulins and Georges-Jacques Danton from the guillotine. The introduction also sketches Rousselin’s decades-long transition from republican to liberal, underscoring both how unusual his trajectory was and how his life exemplifies the broader themes of the Age of Revolution.

Abstract:
This chapter introduces chemist Marie Geneviève Charlotte Thiroux d'Arconville, who studied organic decomposition, echoing Newton's view, in Query #30 of the Opticks, that decay was a natural breakdown process in which substances were reduced to their component elements. The chapter then tracks her early life, in which she was born into a rich tax farmer family in 1720, and the rudimentary experiments she performed as a child. It also narrates her shift to intellectual pursuits after she contracted smallpox at twenty-two. Turning her energies to learning, d'Arconville taught herself languages starting with English and Italian, translating over the many next decades literary and scientific works that she admired, and publishing many original ones of her own on morality, history, fiction, and science. The chapter then presents the intellectuals with whom d'Arconville developed a close kinship: chemist Pierre-Joseph Macquer, doctor chemist François Paul Lyon Poulletier de la Salle, and surgeon Jean-Joseph Sue.
