The purpose of this thesis is to examine changes in rural settlement in eastern Suffolk over the period of study. England became a largely urban nation in the second half of the nineteenth century, and although east Suffolk remained essentially rural, there was even here a trend towards the urban. In 1851 forty-three percent of the population lived in rural parishes; by 1931 it was nineteen per cent. The population, over the same period, rose from 121,652 to 231,295. This dissertation is an analysis of population and households of a village in Northeast Japan, using historical documents from the period between 1760 and 1870. The population of the village increased 1.73-fold in 110 years with the average growth rate of 0.50 per cent per annum. In general, the population shifted from a low pressure regime characterized by relatively low fertility and low mortality to a high pressure regime with high fertility and high mortality. The present classical model consists of two empirical valence bond states and a control parameter that effectively determines the reaction free energy. This thesis responds to the perennial quest for regional and local investigations into agricultural history, a theme reiterated in the recently published volume of the Agrarian History of England and Wales. It examines landownership and farming in Essex C.1850 and 1914, a large county with a variety of soils and market accessibility enabling investigation of the broader debate on agriculture.
