Abstract:
Wonderer is a screenplay about the life of writer/traveler Bruce Chatwin. The screenplay examines not only Chatwin's travels and writing, but also the landscape which he never fully explored: his inner-world. This reflective analysis will focus on the relationship between Bruce Chatwin's writing - especially in The Songlines- and the ways in which the book's subject matter and style influenced the choices in content and form which I made in writing Wonderer.

Abstract:
Complex, heteroclite, a mixture of autobiography, travel-writing, and novel, the work of Bruce Chatwin (1940-89) is hard to classify. It derives its coherence from the author's theory that man is a born nomad, and the history of civilization an unending conflict between nomadism and settlement. Over successive narratives, the theory is structured around a dialectic between 'disorientation' and 'renewal', with on the hand the recurrent themes of exile, of the journey-as -curative, and the retreat from history, and on the other those of rootedness, of the journey-as-quest, and the return to origins, this dialectic constitutes the real dynamic of Chatwin's work. It reflects the unresolved debate between the ascetic and the aesthete, the wanderer and the intellectual, the traveller and the researcher within him. With the last books, it opens out into an exploration of the alchemy between writing and travel, creation and reality, and the eternal duality between being and becoming

Chatwin, Jonathan Michael. "'Anywhere out of the world' : restlessness in the work of Bruce Chatwin." Thesis, University of Exeter, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/10036/41273.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is centrally concerned with the theme of restlessness within the work of the British author Bruce Chatwin. Critical interpretation of Chatwin’s work has tended to focus on the generic and political status of the five full-length works he produced during his lifetime, exploring the theoretical implications of the author’s formal approach. This concentration on the structural and ideological elements of Chatwin’s creative output has resulted in the substantive thematic material of the works being somewhat overlooked. The following analysis intends to redress this balance, focussing specifically on the creative representation of the key theme of restlessness within Chatwin’s body of work. This thesis will explore the topic of restlessness through an analysis of both the author’s published work and the embargoed archive of Chatwin’s notebooks, diaries and manuscripts that resides in the Bodleian Library, the majority of which has never before been made available to critical scrutiny. Drawing on this important and previously unstudied archive, which includes the manuscript of Chatwin’s first unpublished work, known as “The Nomadic Alternative”, the following thesis will examine the origins and development of the theme of restlessness, which can be seen as Chatwin’s chief literary preoccupation; a condition that he perceived as endemic to the human species, and which he argued crucially influenced both the individual possibility of discovering satisfaction in one’s life and the wider likelihood of attaining social harmony. Tracing Chatwin’s interest in the subject from its earliest literary manifestation in “The Nomadic Alternative”, this thesis intends to document the development of the author’s consistent engagement with the notion of restlessness, examining both his literary representation of the affliction as well as presenting an analysis of his theory of human movement.

Abstract:
This study examines two innovative elements of Bruce Chatwin's narrative style. The first corresponds to his anthropological approach to writing, the second is his new mode of visual perception. As to the first, I argue that the concepts of liminality and communitas are the central axes of his poetics, thus conferring ideological wholeness and thematic coherence on his work. My underlying premise is that through his liminal chronotopes and personae he adds a whole new dimension of truth to storytelling. Besides liminality enables him to construct a new representation of subjectivity based on the metamorphosing nature of man on the one hand and on the inclusion and fictionalisation of personal obsessions in the process of literary creation on the other. Finally, liminality enables him to acknowledge human duality (with the pain that such recognition means) and in turn transfer this recognition in a both humorous and compassionate mood. Through the concept of communitas Chatwin partly faces his non¬committal political agenda while finding an identifiable way to justify his stance towards Englishness, nationality and universalism. Communitas also gives meaning to his belief in the fusion of form and content within storytelling. As to the second, Chatwin's way of seeing based on a search for both the uncanny and the miraculous determines his style of the uneventfulness on the one hand, and leads him to avoid simulacra, pose and panoramic visions on the other. My findings reveal that he foregrounds asymmetry in order to replace constraint in form and justify his belief in reality/man being constantly in the making. His is a democratic visualisation, born out of both a polycentric perception of reality and the respect for the multiple identities within the individual: Chatwin urges the need to "see" and acknowledge them all.
This study also assesses Chatwin's pioneering role in modern travel literature. The writer questions and subverts the form and the content of the genre and provides travel writing with a new taxonomy. The figure of the traveller becomes involved in a new geography of adventure in which the quest is no longer a search of reportage, victory or self-discovery but an aesthetic search in which the landscapes are created first in the imagination.
Finally, my study also concludes that Chatwin's particular way of perceiving reality both abroad and at home made him perceive his own reality in a different way: he defined himself through an unconventional kind of subjectivity, thus creating a representation of identity and truth other than the one expected in autobiographical accounts.

Abstract:
This dissertation studies the works of four writers who attempt cross-cultural advocacy through writing fiction based upon their fieldwork or other travels. In order to explain cultural differences, however, all four writers inadvertently rely upon the very Orientalist stereotypes, the "ethnographic fictions," which they seek to undermine. Three underlying causes for this dynamic are identified and traced through works by the authors as well as contemporary post-colonial, queer, feminist, and ethnographic interdisciplinary scholarship. First, in order to explain the significance of native cultures in the language of the mainstream or dominant one, cross-cultural advocates must balance novelty with intelligibility. A critique of an epistemology of empire, then, better taps "ethnographic fictions" through mimicry, mockery, and minstrelsy, rather than appealing to abstract, ahistorical universals. Second, Odysseun myths remain a powerful set of presumptions about the relationship between travel, individuality, and empowerment. Yet the idea that freedom and free thought are both the goals and consequences of travel fails to account for the history of pilgrims, refugees, and community-based activists. Third, Orientalism and Anthropology are organized around the idea that sex/gender roles reveal the essence of indigenous cultures. The result is a disproportionate focus upon women's living quarters (harems, zezanas, huts), and indigenous sexuality (berdaches, hijras, shamen). For the four authors, the relationship between advocacy and self-identification is a crucial element. Close reading of the writers' texts reveals how they each seek validation of their sex/gender identities through investigations abroad. As queer, feminist, and/or bi-cultural people, the writers are particularly sensitive to conventions of belonging and exclusion. This study reveals how advocacy and alienation interact in 20th-century literature and scholarship of the Other.

Abstract:
Chat communication has been investigated within the frames of 5thD (Fifth Dimension). The study is based in field-material from two chat sessions, between children in Ronneby-Barcelona and Ronneby-Denver. During the chats there was plenty of interaction between children and, assistants, which is illustrated with the help of patterns of communication. The analysis of the data shows that chat is more than an interaction between two persons, it even connects two social settings. The thesis also deals with the question of how to create meaningful chat, since this did not occur in an entirely satisfactory way during the above-mentioned chats.

Siefert, Justin. "Chatting Sri Lanka : powerful communications in colonial times." Thesis, Manchester Metropolitan University, 2016. http://e-space.mmu.ac.uk/618398/.

Full text
Abstract:
The thesis argues that the telephone had a significant impact upon colonial society in Sri Lanka. In the emergence and expansion of a telephone network two phases can be distinguished: in the first phase (1880-1914), the government began to construct telephone networks in Colombo and other major towns, and built trunk lines between them. Simultaneously, planters began to establish and run local telephone networks in the planting districts. In this initial period, Sri Lanka’s emerging telephone network owed its construction, financing and running mostly to the planting community. The telephone was a ‘tool of the Empire’ only in the sense that the government eventually joined forces with the influential planting and commercial communities, including many members of the indigenous elite, who had demanded telephone services for their own purposes. However, during the second phase (1919-1939), as more and more telephone networks emerged in the planting districts, government became more proactive in the construction of an island-wide telephone network, which then reflected colonial hierarchies and power structures. Finally in 1935, Sri Lanka was connected to the Empire’s international telephone network. One of the core challenges for this pioneer work is of methodological nature: a telephone call leaves no written or oral source behind. Thus the work will have to use a broader body of sources, advertisements and films and ‘read between the lines’ about the nature and content of telephone conversation. The telephone was more than a crucial part of the island’s colonial business structure or a useful tool to call for help in situations of distress, but beyond this primary purpose, it offered the opportunity to communicate and chat with other members of your peer group, which was particular important for women. The telephone was also an expensive commodity and consumption was the first step for the indigenous elite to challenge the colonial power. The thesis argues that the telephone played a role in the processes of political and identity building during colonial times.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Today, tele-conference technology has been widely used in various areas, especially in the business domain; a number of software applications have been developed based on this technology. However, most of these applications are designed for enterprise use. As a pioneer in the mobile communication field, Ericsson AB decided to develop a mobile application prototype, named Ericsson Geo Chat system (EGCS), which can be used on any java-supported mobile phones and the main purpose of this product is for entertainment. The entire project was divided into two individual development phases. As a sub-project, this report only developed and implemented the first phase. During this phase, EGCS implemented the chat functionality by sending text messages. The map was added to the chatting system with more visual feedbacks. EGCS also allowed creating visual chat rooms as a red square that can be located and displayed on the map. By using the navigation tool, only one chatting room can be selected. The actual location of the user was traced by the Global Position System (GPS). As soon as the user enter the room, they can start the text message chatting. In this report, the theoretical frameworks, the train of thought of the system design, the overview of the development process, and the testing of prototype are described.

Meredith, Joanne. "Chatting online : comparing spoken and online written interaction between friends." Thesis, Loughborough University, 2014. https://dspace.lboro.ac.uk/2134/14321.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis addresses the question of whether or not online interactional practices are systematically different from interaction in other contexts, particularly spoken interaction. I will establish how the organization of online interaction demonstrates participants orientations to the technological affordances of the online medium. The dataset for the study comprises one-to-one interaction between friends, conducted using the chat application of the social networking site, Facebook. Chat logs and screen capture data were used to analyze how participants engaged in, and managed, their unfolding interaction. The data were analyzed using conversation analysis (CA). CA was developed originally for the analysis of spoken talk, but in this dissertation it provides an empirical basis for comparing Facebook chat and spoken interaction. The thesis demonstrates how CA can be used for analyzing online interaction. The first analytic chapter provides an overview of how participants organize the generic orders of interaction. The findings suggest that participants draw on their knowledge of both spoken and written interaction when managing the particular interactional constraints and affordances of Facebook chat. The second analytic chapter focuses on chat openings, comparing them to openings in spoken interaction. The findings reveal some similarities, but also systematic differences which orient to the design of the chat software. The third analytic chapter examines topic management, including topic-initiation, topic change and the management of simultaneous topics. The findings suggest that the CA categorization of topic-initiating turns could potentially be extended by also analyzing action-orientation and also the epistemic stance displayed. The analysis also reveals remarkable similarities between topic change in spoken interaction and in Facebook chat. Finally in this chapter I show how organizational components of spoken interaction, such as adjacency pairs and tying techniques, are used to manage simultaneous topics. The final analytic chapter focuses on self-repair in Facebook chat. The analysis reveals that self-repairs completed during message construction orient to the same interactional contingencies as self-repairs in spoken interaction. However, the affordances of Facebook chat enable these repairs to be hidden from the recipient. Visible repairs tend to be corrections, with the affordances impacting the sequential placement of such repairs. Finally, I show how participants self-repair in response to the actions of their co-participant. Overall, the findings reveal a number of similarities between the organization of Facebook chat and spoken interaction. The analysis also reveals that participants attend to the technological affordances of Facebook in a variety of ways. Finally, this thesis demonstrates that, while there are differences between the interactional practices of spoken and online written interaction, CA can be used to analyze, and subsequently explain, such differences.

Abstract:
Highland history of the middle ages continues to be regarded generally as separate from the history of the Lowlands, as well as the political history of Scotland. To a large extent, the perception of two distinct societies within Scotland during this period has been swept aside, but few moves have been made to integrate fully the history of clanship into that of Scotland as a whole. This case study of the Mackintoshes and Clan Chattan seeks to examine clanship from a sociological as well as a historical perspective. Kinship was a fundamental characteristic of clan society, but these relationships were not limited to blood relatives. The creation of Active kinship through ties of customary obligation within a clan reinforced clan solidarity and cohesion, a vital factor for the geographically disparate Clan Chattan confederation. Within the locality, Active kinship was established by the contraction of more formal alliances which had social, political and economic objectives. The creation of these relationships enabled the clan to survive and expand. For central Highland clans like the Mackintoshes and Clan Chattan who lived in close geographic proximity to Lowland society, the extension of fictive kinship facilitated easy assimilation across the perceived divide in Scottish society. The realisation on the part of clan chiefs that cordial relations with the crown would be beneficial to the clan as a whole saw a movement throughout the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries towards closer integration with Lowland society. This examination of clanship places the history of the Highlands into a wider political and social context. While clanship was a unique phenomenon within Scotland, it should not be examined in isolation, but rather as an integral part of Scottish political life.

Lin, Yu-Min. "Chatting online to learn : repair sequences in text-based L1-L2 interaction in CMC." Thesis, University of Newcastle upon Tyne, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10443/3065.

Full text
Abstract:
Because of the affordability and widespread availability of modern technologies, researchers of second language learning in Taiwan as well as across the globe have frequently examined Computer-Mediated Communication (CMC) in their studies. However, none has hitherto explored the interactional space of text-based, online chat. This doctoral thesis tries to bridge this research gap by investigating interactional phenomena as they arise in online chatting involving L1 and L2 speakers of English. Special attention is given to how the participants interact with each other to achieve mutual understanding through the sequential structures of language-in-use and the use of online interactional resources. The data for the study is provided by 24 paired participants (i.e. 24 English L1 speakers from geographically remote areas and 24 Taiwanese university students as English L2 speakers) chatting for a 10-week period within a private group on Facebook. Their text-based talk-in-interaction data were retrieved and analysed using the techniques of Conversation Analysis. The salient findings are in relation to the sequential structures of repair sequences. Mutual understandings between L1 and L2 speakers were achieved mostly through repair sequences and the deployment of online interactional devices. There is evidence of incidental learning through CMC taking place not only among L2 speakers but also among L1 speakers who learned interactionally in terms of how to adapt themselves and shape their language-in-use to interact with L2 speakers. This raises new issues with regard to the conventional approach to L2 learning in SLA. In examining the online interactional platform, the data collection and analysis, this study is of importance in providing a better understanding of L1 and L2 speakers’ online talk-in-interaction without participants’ physical co-presence. The study also contributes to the development of, and the literature on, methodology and pedagogy. On the basis of the findings, it is suggested that future studies should continue research on the use of CA for SLA in CMC, with participants of various language proficiencies, and compare the similarities and differences between spoken, online-chat, and written data.

Kusisto, Laura. "THE IMPACT OF VIDEO CHATTING ON IDEALIZATION AND DISILLUSIONMENT FOR LONG DISTANCE DATING COUPLES." UKnowledge, 2015. http://uknowledge.uky.edu/hes_etds/31.

Full text
Abstract:
Previous research indicates a high rate of long distance relationships, especially among young adults. Yet, research in this area is lacking, particularly regarding the role of video chatting. Through the lens of the media richness theory and the hyperpersonal model, this qualitative study explores how video chatting impacts idealization and disillusionment in young adults’ long distance dating relationships. Data was collected through semi-structured interviews with both partners of six heterosexual couples. Data was analyzed using the constant comparative approach and following the basic framework of open, axial, and selective coding used in grounded theory research. Results indicate that video chatting helps partners feel close to one another, though partners must still manage the differences between feeling close and actually being close. Couples use idealization and uncertainty management to reduce disillusionment, and couples who anticipate changes manage those changes more successfully. These findings suggest that video chatting mimics in-person communication more accurately than any other technology, though it cannot replace true geographic proximity. Nonetheless, video chatting appears to help minimize disillusionment by promoting healthy idealization for couples who use it throughout their long distance dating relationship.

Two decades after the Internet explosion throughout the world, there is a pronounced difference between the reality that existed before and the one we have nowadays. It is possible to say, without risk of exaggeration, that the Internet transformed almost every single part of human life. Among the immeasurable resources available in the Internet are the possibilities of making friends and maintaining friendships, as well as fighting, studying, buying, flirting, complaining of companies or services, arguing, dating and chatting. These things can all be done thanks to resources such as emails, chats, websites in general, blogs and, more recently, social network sites. Social network sites (as Orkut and Facebook) have become very popular during the last decade, especially among youngsters. Among the many social network sites available, Orkut is preferred by the Brazilians, who usually use it to interact with each other sending messages, sharing pictures and joining communities. However, some have been using Orkut for a different purpose, which surprisingly has become increasingly common. These are bereaved people who have been using Orkut to send messages to others who are dead, and whose profiles were kept active. Aiming to comprehend this new behavior, this thesis incorporates a bibliographic review and also a field research. In the bibliographic review, death conceptions, behaviors and rituals related to death are approached historically and sociologically. From the psychological standpoint, the different stages of grief, factors that can endanger the evolution of this process and indicators that grief has ended are presented. The field research is composed by 15 interviews with those who write messages in profiles of deceased family members or friends. The analysis of these interviews demonstrates that, in the first moment of grief, the deceased s profile is perceived as a part of the dead person, causing the sensation of being close to him/her. This perception makes the bereaved have the sensation that they can communicate with the deceased, compelling them to leave messages on his/her profile. Doing so brings momentary relief for the sorrow experienced by the bereaved. Thence, they consider Orkut as an avenue to help relieve the pain of losing a loved one. As time passes, they get more resigned with the loss, which results in fewer profile visits and even rarer posting of messages. The profile becomes, then, just one place of nice memories, where people eventually go when they want to remember the deceased.

Abstract:
Piano instructors often have to work as a bridge connecting music from the past and the future. From a pedagogical viewpoint, contemporary works should be considered just as important as those in the standard repertoire. Yet, most piano instructors are skewed towards modern music and their teaching materials are focused on eighteenth and nineteenth century repertoire. It is essential for them to introduce various kinds of music from different periods and cultures in order to fully develop a student's musicianship. The purpose of this study is to compare two modern works that are designed mainly for pedagogical purposes: 32 Piano Games by Ross Lee Finney (1906-1997) and Amusements by Stephen Chatman (b. 1950). These compositions are intended for beginner and intermediate students and incorporate a number of contemporary elements and techniques. This study can help instructors and students understand how these elements are being used and the ways they have evolved over time. Most importantly, this dissertation can provide teachers with a distinct methodology that enables them to present modern pieces to beginning level students in a more approachable fashion, further providing theoretical and technical assets that will allow them to play advanced contemporary music in the future.

Abstract:
Tre stycken teman identifierades i resultatet.
Counselling through online chat has become a source of contact for youths who wants to seek help. Through the service youths can from their cell phones and computer chat with professionals and peers who can give them support to various problems. This study wants to give an overview on the research on the subject made the last ten years on why youths, 13 – 25 years, choose to use counselling through online chat. With a literature review 13 studies matched the inclusion criteria. Three themes were identified in the result. 1) The user, which revolves around what kind of person, problem and attitudes the user has, 2) Anonymity and control and 3) The Answerer, which revolves around the answerer's role. The three themes give an overview on the current research and shows that the users have a different kind of problems and that there are different dimensions of control compared to a physical session.

Abstract:
This research focuses on the representations of nomads and their evolution. Since ancient Greece a specific apprehension of the nomads has hinged on pastoralism and mobile dwelling, incorporating other elements (the relation with war, wisdom, barbary, space, politics...). A history and a tradition start, a long progress that will find its height during the second half of the XXth century, particularly through the texts of Chatwin, Moravia, Le Clézio, Duvignaud, Deleuze and Guattari
