Abstract:
This article revisits, analyzes and critiques Bruce Chatwin’s 1987 bestseller, The Songlines, more than three decades after its publication. In Songlines, the book primarily responsible for his posthumous celebrity, Chatwin set out to explore the essence of Central and Western Desert Aboriginal Australians’ philosophical beliefs. For many readers globally, Songlines is regarded as a—if not the—definitive entry into the epistemological basis, religion, cosmology and lifeways of classical Western and Central Desert Aboriginal people. It is argued that Chatwin’s fuzzy, ill-defined use of the word-concept “songlines” has had the effect of generating more heat than light. Chatwin’s failure to recognize the economic imperative underpinning Australian desert people’s walking praxis is problematic: his own treks through foreign lands were underpropped by socioeconomic privilege. Chatwin’s ethnocentric idée fixe regarding the primacy of “walking” and “nomadism,” central to his Songlines thématique, well and truly preceded his visits to Central Australia. Walking, proclaimed Chatwin, is an elemental part of “Man’s” innate nature. It is argued that this unwavering, preconceived, essentialist belief was a self-serving construal justifying Chatwin’s own “nomadic” adventures of identity. Is it thus reasonable to regard Chatwin as a “rogue author,” an unreliable narrator? And if so, does this matter? Of greatest concern is the book’s continuing majority acceptance as a measured, accurate account of Aboriginal belief systems. With respect to Aboriginal desert people and the barely disguised individuals depicted in Songlines, is Chatwin’s book a “rogue text,” constituting an act of epistemic violence, consistent with Spivak’s usage of that term?

Abstract:
This article aims to investigate the epic aspects that permeate the literary life of Francisco Félix de Souza, a central figure in the transatlantic slave trade in the first half of the 19th century, both in the work The Viceroy of Ouidah (1982), by the English writer Bruce Chatwin, as well as in its adaptation for Cobra Verde (1987), a cinematographic product written and directed by Werner Herzog. Exploring the “literary” level, the focus of the investigation is to identify the presence of the hybrid character of the “historical” and “wonderful” levels present in the adaptations, in addition to recurring epic themes such as the hero’s identity – sanctification and anthropological vision of the myths that embrace him –, the spatial displacement and, mainly, Bahia as a metaphor of a lost paradise, unreachable by the protagonist himself, and even by all his descendants. Chatwin and Herzog rewrite Francisco Félix de Souza’s life from different points of view, but still in an epic way, giving him a new name and completing his story.

Full text
Abstract:
Analysis of sediment cores from two toxaphene-treated and one untreated lake basin demonstrates both the short-term effect of toxaphene applied in 1961–62 and the longer term effect of subsequent trout stocking on invertebrates. In Chatwin Lake (higher toxaphene concentration), planktonic cladocerans decreased in abundance, and dominance quickly changed from small- to large-bodied types. Bosmina was reduced by 88% at the time of toxaphene application and was eliminated during the 1970's as invertebrate predators like Chaoborus americanus increased in response to the poor survival of stocked fish. Short-term toxic effects were not detectable in cores from Peanut Lake (lower toxaphene concentration). In both treated lakes, large invertebrates became dominant with the absence of native fish and during trout stocking. Chaoborus spp. remained at low levels throughout the 1960's in both treated lakes compared with the untreated lake, possibly due to residual toxaphene toxicity and/or to predation by stocked fish. Toxicity to total chironomids was not detected, although genera-specific responses were not analysed. While the higher toxaphene dosage caused residual toxicity in Chatwin Lake for at least a decade, the manipulation of fish communities was primarily responsible for long-term changes in the invertebrates of both lakes.

Abstract:

Full text
Abstract:
AbstractAssociated with Taylor’s classical analysis of scalar solute dispersion in the laminar flow of a solvent in a straight pipe, this work explores the approach towards transverse uniformity of concentration distribution. Mei’s homogenization technique is extended to find solutions for the concentration transport. Chatwin’s result for the approach to longitudinal normality is recovered in terms of the mean concentration over the cross-section. The asymmetrical structure of the concentration cloud and the transverse variation of the concentration distribution are concretely illustrated for the initial stage. The rate of approach to uniformity is shown to be much slower than that to normality. When the longitudinal normality of mean concentration is well established, the maximum transverse concentration difference remains near one-half of the centroid concentration of the cloud. A time scale up to$10 R^2/D$($R$is the radius of the pipe and$D$is the molecular diffusivity) is suggested to characterize the transition to transverse uniformity, in contrast to the time scale of$0.1 R^2/D$estimated by Taylor for the initial stage of dispersion, and that of$1.0 R^2/D$by Chatwin for longitudinal normality.

Abstract:

In his book The Songlines (1988), Bruce Chatwin describes how as a young man he awoke one morning to find himself blind. Understandably he smartly sought a medical consultation. His consultant suggested that he had been en-grossed in examining paintings in fine detail for too long (he was an art expert at Sotheby's), and should take time to explore long horizons. His sight had returned by the time he reached the airport. I read about this in Australia's Northern Territory, a place of long and broad horizons. Abstract:

Abstract:
Chatwin & Sullivan (1990) have demonstrated that, for a wide range of self-similar scalar fields, the moments of the probability density function of concentration have a very simple form. Here, an extension to this simple form which takes account of the source distribution is developed. This extension has two effects. Firstly it modifies the values of the two parameters appearing in the original theory and in particular explains the observed behaviour of these parameters very near to a line source of heat in grid tubulence. Secondly, it introduces an additional parameter in the description of each moment beyond the second. It is shown that these additional parameters are necessary in order to describe measurements of the first four central moments throughout the concentration field from a continuous line source of heat in grid-generated turbulence.

Abstract:

Abstract:
It is difficult, if not impossible, to systematically identify ten books that have been influential over a professional lifetime, not least since many have probably exerted their influence in long-forgotten ways: part of that semantic sediment laid down by protracted reading (and conversation). However, I do know that George Orwell was the first serious writer whom I read ‘of my own free will’ and I know that I would not wish to be without the works of Anthony Burgess, Albert Camus, Bruce Chatwin, Don DeLillo, Graham Greene, Henning Mankell or W.G. Sebald. I can remember that books on Buddhism sustained me through senior house officer jobs in a number of medical specialties (trying to focus, single-mindedly, on the task in hand rather than my tiredness or distraction), and I suspect that the metaphors of my thought and speech had already been much influenced by exposure to the Bible. Here, I focus on those books that have informed the way I think about psychiatry right now and how it might be practised.

Abstract:
This work is concerned with the parallel-flow shear dispersion of a solute which undergoes a second-order recombination reaction. The primary goal of the work is to provide background theory for the determination of the coefficient of diffusion of reactive-gas-phase species. Approximations are sought for large time and weak combination. At first, dispersion dominates recombination, and a modification of the Chatwin (1970) asymptotic expansion gives the concentration distribution as a regular perturbation expansion in e and t−½, where e is a dimensionless parameter characterizing recombination and t is dimensionless time. The regular expansion breaks down for dimensionless times t of O(ε−2) when dispersion and recombination are of the same importance. At these times, the governing equation is nonlinear and this regime is analysed by a numerical method. Finally, a similarity solution is derived for the concentration of solute when ε2t is large. Overall, the major effect of second-order recombination on dispersion is to flatten the peak of the dominant Gaussian concentration distribution. The speed of the centre of mass of the solute cloud is not affected at leading order by recombination.

Abstract:
The article deals with collecting in Utz (1989), by Bruce Chatwin. I read the fascination with collectors and collecting in the novel from and across two theoretical questions: (1) can objects enfold both a material status and an intangible effect as well as create an alternate narrative that would draw us away from commodification, objectification, and pathology? and (2) can the object confront us more with remnants of human life, with fragments of the representation of desire, and less with the residue of human labor? Kaspar Utz is a great collector of Meissen porcelain who the adverse events of history lead to living in Prague with his fragile treasures, under the malevolent eyes of a police state. Utz knows that a collector is almost an occult “theologian”, and his relationship with the Harlequins and the Colombines of Meissen has something idolatrous. Utz wages a silent war against the enemies that surround him, against the background noise of history, which would like to swallow forever these object-figures made of a substance refined by time. Utz’s lonely and manic life will become a game against the enemies, whose stake is the collection itself, an army of beings that must be removed from the brutal fingertips of tyrannical authority.

Abstract:
This paper outlines the major factors contributing to deforestation in the Sierra Chatina of Oaxaca, Mexico and examines the role played by neo-liberal restructuring in these processes. The last 25 years of rural development in the Sierra Chatino has been accompanied by increasingly large-scale environmental changes. The most obvious outcome has been the loss of 40 percent of the areas natural vegetation. Deforestation has accelerated and exacerbated flooding and climate changes in the region as witnessed by the effects of El Niño driven storms such as Hurricane Pauline. This paper will focus on these processes of deforestation in the region. In this paper, we argue that the Mexican government’s neo-liberal policies have encouraged the commoditization of the Sierra Chatina forests at the expense of long-term ecological sustainability. Since 1992, Mexico has moved toward privatization of forests by removing the legal roadblocks to leasing of ejido and communal lands. Moreover, as neo-liberal policies have devalued the currency, eliminated subsidies, the Chatino have been pushed deeper into poverty, and into unsustainable uses of their forests. Thus, we contend that transformations of land-use patterns seen in these coastal mountains are part of a fundamental shift in local livelihoods from subsistence to cash-based strategies. Keywords: deforestation, Mexico, Oaxaca, Chatino, neo-liberal policy, ecological sustainablity, migration, political ecology, el Niño, privatization, climate change, environmental degradation, rural development.

Abstract:
Most studies in the field of synchronous Computer Mediated Communication (CMC) deal with interactions between language learners, while interactions between native speakers (NS) and learners have not been explored to the same extent, particularly to ascertain whether chatting with NS can provide a pedagogically sound bridge to conversation. Through the analysis of interactions within a NS Italian chatline, this paper considers whether the chatline environment can act as a bridge to conversational Italian by providing the same opportunities for second language acquisition reputedly offered by face-to-face interaction. Italian NS chatline discourse is analysed for its conversational ‘flavour’ by considering variety of Italian, range of topics, questions, discourse markers, feedback tokens and negotiations. The findings of this study suggest that NS chat discourse can provide learners with exposure to colloquial and regional varieties of Italian, which are generally unavailable in language textbooks. Furthermore, NS chatline discourse offers learners a type of informal conversational practice which also includes negotiation of meaning, thus confirming its role in promoting language learning.
