Full textIn Quebec, in all Canadian provinces and in 18 American states, the method for determining the lime requirements of agricultural soils is based on pHₛₘₚ analysis. However, this method poses accuracy problems for soils with low lime requirements. Thus, this method is not in phase with the agronomic reality of a majority of Quebec soils with low needs and maintained each year by liming practices. The objective of this study was to develop a new procedure for evaluating lime requirements based on routine soil analyses (pMᴡₐₜₑᵣ, MO, Pₘ₃, Kₘ₃, Caₘ₃, Mgₘ₃, Alₘ₃)) and their calibration by supervised learning on soil acidity titration curves. To carry out this study, 270 titration curves were elaborated from laboratory experiments, then these curves were parameterized and the covariates resulting from this parameterization are predicted by artificial intelligence from basic physicochemical characteristics of the analyzed soils. This research project was carried out in such a way as to take into account the reality of agricultural soils in Quebec as much as possible. The sampling was done in 9 regions of Quebec. The results obtained prove that it is possible to parameterize a soil titration curve and to predict its lime needs from its routine physico-chemical parameters.

Full textThe development of sustainable agriculture requires greater understanding of the impact of management practices on agroecosystem functioning, and on the ecosystem services provided by these agroecosystems. Representing nearly 68% of world's agricultural surfaces and contributing to the livelihoods of more than 800 million people, grasslands are one of the major agroecosystems where optimized agricultural practices are of concern. This PhD focuses on liming, a well-known practice for counteracting soil acidification (due to ongoing natural processes or accelerated by management practices), but which has variable efficiency in permanent grasslands. Indeed, liming effects on grassland are poorly documented and existing studies rarely take into account grassland multifunctionality. My thesis uses an integrated approach to improve the knowledge of liming impacts on grassland functioning. Different types of experiments – in the field (in situ), in semi-controlled conditions (mesocosms) and laboratory soil incubations (microcosms) – were used to study liming effects on different grassland compartments (vegetation, microorganisms, soil) along with possible interacting factors. Liming effectively increased soil pH in all the experiments. However, improving pH status did not always lead to greater forage production or increases in microbial and root biomass. My results showed that liming can enhance greenhouse gas emissions through several pathways (reemission of lime-derived carbon or stimulation of carbon mineralization), but may also reduce CO2 emissions from ecosystem respiration. Collectively, my findings emphasize the importance of pedoclimatic conditions for liming impacts on permanent grasslands and highlight the difficulty of upscaling liming effects, particularly on forage production and greenhouse gas emissions. The efficiency of liming appears to depend on the type and dose of soil improvers and can also interact with other management practices such as nitrogen fertilization and management intensification

Full textLiming is a forestry practice consisting in Ca and Mg amendment used to correct tree cation deficiency induced by soil acidity. Ectomycorrhizae (ECM) provides the tree with nutrients derived both from mineral and organic sources. The ECM community structure and functioning is closely linked to soil nutrient availability, which is considerably modified by liming. The aims of this study were to assess, in declining beech and spruce stands, the impact of liming on ECM community structure and functioning, and to determine if ECMs take part in the improvement of tree mineral nutrition. Results showed that liming was the second factor of sporocarp community structuration after tree host. Liming also decreased the abundance of ECM tips of acidophilic morphotypes and induced the dominance of more ubiquist ones (Clavulina cristata for spruce, Lactarius subdulcis for beech). These morphotypes were confined in the organomineral layer and specialized in the potential secretion of glucuronidase and laccase, respectively. For beech, liming significantly increased the potential oxalate secretion by ECMs, which highly depends on the activity of Lactarius subdulcis. This morphotype is thus suspected to play an important role in mineral weathering, all the more that it accumulated more nutrients in its mantle in the limed plots. Qualitative comparison of liming effects on soil properties, ECM community functioning and beech nutrition showed that ECMs, especially a single morphotype as Lactarius subdulcis, can play an important part in the improvement of tree health, especially concerning Ca and Mg uptake. Liming effects appeared to be site-specific depending on the soil fertility

Full textLime treatment is a technique which greatly improves the workability and the mechanical behaviour of problematic soils. However, the sustainability of this treatment in the earthworks for the long term is an important issue for their stability. Besides, the aggregate size resulting from the construction procedure is an essential parameter that may influence the behaviour of treated soils in field construction. The present work deals with the thermo-hydro-mechanical properties of lime-treated soils, with an emphasis put on the curing time and the aggregate size effects. Lime-treated soil samples (both silt and clay) were prepared with different sizes of aggregates and cured during different periods. Afterwards, these soils were studied through microstructural observations, mineralogical analyses, thermal conductivity, air permeability and water retention capacity measurements, as well as the determinations of compressibility and small strain shear modulus. The results show that significant changes of thermo-hydro-mechanical behaviour of soils are induced by lime treatment after curing. Moreover, the aggregate size also plays an essential role in the behaviour of treated soils. Samples prepared with the large aggregates present higher thermal conductivity and air permeability, but with lower water retention capacity, poorer compression behaviour and smaller stiffness

Full textOur work is based on (1) a functional analysis of a long term in the chemical composition of streams since fifty-years, (2) an experimental liming of catchments. The historical analysis showed an acidification and a continuous demineralization of water draining sandstone since fifty years. The acidity and the mineralization of streams draining granites rich on weatherable minerals have decreased since thirty years. In the area covered by granites rich in Na plagioclase, which is drained by many acid streams, mineralization has decreased since twenty years and Al concentration have decreased since ten years, without pH changes. The experimental input of dolomite and dolomitic limestone, gypsum and KCl has caused a sudden and durable increase in Ca, Mg and pH in the stream of granitic catchment riche in sodium plagioclase. The dynamic of chloride showed a rapid contribution of soil waters to the humid area and stream, while a small fraction has infiltrated deeper into the soil. On sandstone, except a direct effect during the flood following the liming, the increase of concentrations was very small. The majority of chloride, Ca and Mg are infiltrated deeper into the permeable sandy soils, without contributing directly to the stream flow. Hydrologic, isotopic, chemical arguments suggest that the mean residence time of water and mineral elements in catchment is of several decades This work supports the scientific material for a reasoned politic of acidity correction of stream water in the Vosges mountains

Full textMining operations produce a large amount of tailings, sludges and acid rocks, changing the environment. Revegetation of residues helps restor ecological services on mining sites. The main objective of this study was to develop low cost, environmentally sound substrates made of biochar, ash, fertilizing residual matter and lime sludge for revegetation of mining wastes. Physical, chemical and biological characterization of the substrates have been completed in addition to bioassays with Alnus incana subsp. rugosa and Calamagrostis canadensis. Ash in the substrates had an impact on pH and Mn content while Fe content was related to biochar. Porosity and saturated hydraulic conductivity were higher in the substrates with biochar in lower with ash. Fertilizing residual matter blend made the more porous and permeable substrates and very high content in P and K. Liming sludge increased electrical conductivity, Ca and Mg contents and did not significantly affect physical properties of substrates. After 4 months of growth in greenhouses, Alders showed the best growth in the substrates 7 (biochar, fertilizing residual matter and liming sludge) and 8 (biochar and liming sludge). Biochar seems better than ash for Alder growth, followed by liming sludge. We cannot conclude for Calamagrostis canadensis because of the lack of data due to its poor germination.

Full textThe effects of lime treatment on the mechanical properties of soils are usually not accounted for in the design of geotechnical structures. As a result the potential of lime treatment has not been fully exploited. In this thesis, a comprehensive experimental program has been carried out to identity the key features of the mechanical behaviour of structured materials. The chemical modifications arising from lime treatment were quantified using thermal analysis methods. From these results a non-linear chemo-mechanical coupling was established between the concentration of cementitious compounds and the yield stress. Using these results, a new formulation to model the degradation of the structure at yield has been developed and implemented in a constitutive model for structured materials. This new model, developed in the framework of the Modified Cam Clay model, requires a limited number of additional parameters that all have a physical meaning and can all be determined from a single isotropic compression test. The model has proven to be successful in reproducing the key features of structured materials and for the modelling of the mechanical behaviour of lime treated specimens under various stress paths. Due to similarities in behaviour, it is shown that the formulation is also suitable for naturally structured soils. To account for a structured material in the design of geotechnical structures, a fully functional finite element program for elasto-plastic problems was developed including the pre- and post-processing of the results. A thorough validation has confirmed the good implementation of the finite element method and its suitability for the modelling of complex geometries involving structured materials

The mechanical exploitation of the natural peat bogs produces media called "residual peat bogs" among which the physico-chemical properties, naturally constraining, are degraded. The objective of this study was to evaluate the potential productivity of two energy crops, willow (Salix miyabeana) and the reed canary grass (Phalaris arundinacea), on residual peat bogs situated at Lamèque in New Brunswick (Canada). This type of rehabilitation is named "phyto-management". Moreover, in the climate change context and the depletion of fossil fuels, bioenergy-based phytomanagement is of interest with the use of agroforestry biomass as a lower emission fuel in biomass boilers. The results of glasshouse study conducted on RPB from the site Sun Gro indicated that N-P-K fertilizer and calcitic or dolomitic lime applications have a significant effect on growth and yield parameters of willow as well as on certain edaphic properties such as pH and the content of metallic trace elements (Cu, Fe, Mn, Zn) in the labile and moderately labile fractions. Organic matter matrix is an important binding site for Cu whereas oxide matrix for Fe, Mn and Zn. The small-scale field trials conducted at the Mousse Cannadienne site highlighted that willow and reed canary grass can be grown in the residual peat bogs amended with dolomitic lime and fertlized with complete fertlizer. Fertilizer containing the chemical elements improves growth, uptake of cationic nutrients and productiveness of plants. The fertilized and limed willow plots produced a maximum yield up to 6161.6 kg / ha in 16 months of growth. The limed plots without fertilizer produced 437,0 kg shoot biomass of willow / ha. Generally, the highest concentration of Ca, Mg and Mn is mainly found in the aerial parts of plants whereas those of Al, Cd, Cu, Fe, and Zn are highest in roots. The concentrations of metallic trace elements in shoot plant biomass are below thresholds values of toxicity. The results reveal that the soil pH is a key chemical property to be considered during the phyto-management of acid residual peat bogs.

Full textMany terrestrial and freshwater forested ecosystems are affected by anthropogenic acidification, which can led to deleterious effects on biodiversity and ecosystem functioning. To counteract acidification, liming can be used to improve soil and water physicochemical characteristics in order to restore tree health and headwater stream functioning. In particular, liming has been shown to enhance leaf litter breakdown, which is a key ecosystem process in headwater streams. In this context, the aims of this study were, first to investigate if liming, through its effects on soil chemical characteristics, could induce changes on soil microbial communities, and second to identify what factors could be responsible, at the microbial level, of reduced leaf litter breakdown in acidified headwater streams. Results showed that moderate large-scale liming can induce sustainable changes in soil bacterial communities. Major taxonomic changes revealed notably that the ratio between Proteobacteria and Acidobacteria was higher in limed soils compared to their control counterparts, confirming that this ratio could be a microbial indicator of soil quality improvement. Results obtained in the second part of this work showed that sporulating aquatic hyphomycete diversity on leaves was strongly impaired in acidified streams, whereas fungal diversity investigated by molecular analyses was not depressed. The latter showed a lower proportion of aquatic hyphomycetes and a higher proportion of terrestrial fungi on leaves when exposed in an acidified stream compared to a circumneutral one. Microbial activity analyses bring out that Al may be an important factor that could reduce microbial leaf litter processing, this metal inducing notably a P limitation for microbial decomposers. These effects may in turn have repercussions on higher trophic levels and whole ecosystem functioning

Full textThe main objective of this work is to assess the consequences of calco-magnesium liming on two acidified forested catchments in Vosges Mountain (sandstone and granite) on humus morphology, abundance and diversity of mesofauna, fungal biomass and carbon storage in organic horizons 5 and 7 years after liming. Moreover, we performed a study to verify under laboratories conditions by using microcosms filled with soil from acidified catchments lying on sandstone and granite in order to study the short-term effect of calco-magnesium liming. During the two field campaigns, we determined calcium and magnesium contents of OL horizon, pH, humus morphology, mesofauna abundance and diversity, fungal biomass, soil carbon storage of organic layers OL, OF and OH.Results indicated that calco-magnesium liming affects studied parameters in different ways according to elapsed time after liming and the geological substrate (sandstone and granite), the more acidic catchment (sandstone) showing the most remarkable reaction. Results of immediate effects of liming showed a decrease of mesofauna abundance and then gradually increasing tendencies in field campaigns after 5 years while no effect after 7 years after liming. The opposite or no effects were observed on granite substrate. Ca and Mg contents in OL horizon increased by liming but this effect were only significant on sandstone substrate. Soil fungal biomass was not affected by liming but was significantly higher on granite substrate than sandstone. Liming increased the OH horizon thickness on sandstone while decreased the OL horizon on granite, under the influence of biological activity (mesofauna vs microorganisms)

Full textIn the context of dike construction, the lime treatment of clayey soils improves their properties and avoids importing other high quality materials. Such treatment could reduce the environmental and economic cost of the raw material carriage. Several studies in the literature showed that the lime treatment of soil increases the mechanical strength and the resistance to erosion. However, the impact of the environmental stress on the material durability, especially in marine environment, was not taken into account in these studies. The work presented in this thesis dissertation is part of the CPER-FEDER PACA Digue2020 project, of which the purpose is to build a marine dike using a lime treated soil and to monitor the dike sustainability. The goal of our work is to evaluate in the lab the durability of the lime treated soil by reproducing a marine environment. Wetting-drying accelerated cycles using standardized sea water are defined to reproduce the alternate phases of emersion and immersion of the dike. The uniaxial mechanical strength, the resistance to internal and external erosion, and the porosity are evaluated. These properties are chosen in order to assess the durability of the dike. The material electrical resistivity and seismic wave velocities are evaluated during the hydric cycles to correlate these material properties with the state of degradation due to the cycles. The effect of the hydric cycles is a non-linear decrease of the geomechanical properties. The reduction of the properties is fast during the first cycles then it slows down. Geophysical properties prove complementary in characterizing the lime-treated soil properties. The perspectives of this work are to perform in situ testing on the Digue2020 dike. On-site results could be compared with lab test results in order to evaluate the representativeness of lab tests and their protocol. A long term geophysical instrumentation is planned to monitor the properties of the lime-treated and non-treated materials within the Digue2020 earthwork

Full textWastewater treatment plants represent the main transfer pathways for micropollutants to enter the environment. Emerging contaminants are not totally eliminated and are transferred to the sludge by sorption process due to their physico-chemical properties. Among them, pharmaceutical compounds are of a great concern because of their potential adverse effects to ecosystems. As sludge landspreading is the main process of valorization employed in France, the choice of the kind of sludge stabilization treatment able to reduce the amount of micropollutants is crucial. In this work, the fate of trace metallic elements (cadmium and copper) and pharmaceutical compounds (carbamazepine, ciprofloxacin, sulfamethoxazole, salicylic acid, ibuprofen, paracetamol, diclofenac, ketoprofen, econazole, atenolol and propranolol) has been investigated in sludge from different origins: urban (with and without ozone oxidation treatment) and hospital, during their treatment (thickening and stabilization by composting, liming or anaerobic digestion). The methodology developed in this work consisted in connecting the partition coefficients of micropollutants (between the soluble and particulate fractions of sludge, Kdsorption) and their desorption potential (Kdesorption) with micropollutants physico-chemical properties and sludge characteristics (biochemical composition and functional groups). Statistical analysis leads to the determination of models able to predict Kdsorption and Kdesorption. Molecular weight and solubility of pharmaceutical compounds, sludge’s pH, phosphoric functional groups in the soluble phase and amine/hydroxyl groups in the particulate fraction of sludge had the main impact on the sorption behavior. Moreover the oxidation of sludge with ozone before stabilization was efficient to eliminate eight from eleven organic compounds. For all sludge samples, sulfamethoxazole was biodegraded during anaerobic digestion. Batch desorption tests showed that micropollutants were more easily desorbed in limed sludge compared to digested sludge. Finally, the study of micropollutants availability during stabilized urban and hospital sludge landspreading on laboratory soil columns revealed that ibuprofen, salicylic acid, diclofenac and paracetamol were the only compounds present in leachates. This means that the other pharmaceutical compounds exhibited a lower mobility in soil
