Abstract:
The adequacy of the selection criteria for adjectives used in mood adjective check lists has remained unquestioned. A review shows that past lists have been assembled according to arbitrary hypotheses about the underlying structure of affect, which may have biased sampling from the domain of possible descriptors of emotion. In addition, a substantial proportion of the words included in past lists are unrepresentative of emotion. 100 subjects judged how representative of emotion was each word contained in the 1965 Nowlis list. All ratings were reliable. Over-all, an average of one-third of the words included in past studies were judged as unrepresentative of emotion. The arbitrary nature of the initial adjective selection criteria, coupled with the finding that many of the words studied are not representative of emotion, suggests that a reevaluation of current taxonomies of mood and emotion is necessary.

Abstract:
Purpose – The purpose of this paper was to check the validity of Bradford’s Law in the contemporary world of academic electronic mailing lists. Design/methodology/approach – The present research study applied Bradford’s Law to academic electronic mailing lists to determine: whether, on the Internet, mailing lists and the posts sent to them follow the same distribution as scientific journals and the articles published in them with respect to the original form of Bradford’s Law; and whether the behaviour of the Bradford distributions differs depending on the type of academic discipline (social studies or sciences) and subject category (documentation and education, medicine and life sciences) to which the list belongs. As a prior step, the utility of mailing lists was analysed during the 10-year period of 2002-2011, together with their expected future in terms of ratifying the applicability of the Law. Findings – The results showed that, in general, electronic mailing lists are continuing to be used, and that Bradford’s Law is indeed satisfied, especially in the science subject categories, coherent with the fact that Bradford’s Law in cybermetrics holds only for fairly narrow (closed) and well-defined (homogeneous) environments. Originality/value – The originality of the present research study was to check the validity of the historic Bradford’s Law in the contemporary world of Internet.

Abstract:
Collectively bargained language concerning union organizing has become increasingly common. Typically included in such language is the employer's agreement to remain neutral in the organizing process, or to recognize unions based on card checks by neutral third parties (as an alternative to NLRB elections), or both. The authors examine the content of and organizing experience under 118 separate written agreements of this kind. They find strong evidence that card check agreements reduced management campaigning, as well as the use of illegal tactics such as discharges and promises of benefits, and also substantially increased the union recognition rate. Neutrality alone apparently had much less effect, but agreements containing only neutrality provisions have sometimes led to card check agreements. Two less common provisions of organizing agreements that appear to have increased organizing success were campaign time limits and requirements that employers provide unions with employee lists.

Abstract:
The validity of the Depression Adjective Check List and a specially developed check list were assessed with 48 black and 53 white juvenile offenders (70 boys, 31 girls) against self-ratings and ratings of 2 black and 2 white teachers. Both check lists correlated significantly with self- (−.29, −.30) and teachers' ratings (.36, .26) for white offenders, although teachers' ratings were correlated unexpectedly negatively with self-ratings (−.41). Only the special check list scores correlated with the two ratings for black offenders. The necessity of limiting use of tests to populations for which they have been validated is discussed.

To estimate the reliability and validity of the state and trait versions of Set 2 (E, F, G) of the Depression Adjective Check Lists with chemically dependent adults, two independent studies were conducted. Reliabilities [internal consistency (alphas), split-half reliability, and alternate form reliability] and convergent and discriminant validities were adequate. Women's means (state: n = 49; trait: n = 41) were higher than men's (state: n = 50; trait: n = 48) on both versions, and scores on the state version were higher than on the trait version. These heterogeneous chemically dependent subjects (history of drug use and abstinence) were significantly higher on depressive affect than normal persons.

Abstract:
AbstractMalformed data-structures can lead to runtime errors such as arbitrary memory access or corruption. Despite this, reasoning over data-structure properties for low-level heap manipulating programs remains challenging. In this paper we present a constraint-based program analysis that checks data-structure integrity, w.r.t. given target data-structure properties, as the heap is manipulated by the program. Our approach is to automatically generate a solver for properties using the type definitions from the target program. The generated solver is implemented using a Constraint Handling Rules (CHR) extension of built-in heap, integer and equality solvers. A key property of our program analysis is that the target data-structure properties are shape neutral, i.e., the analysis does not check for properties relating to a given data-structure graph shape, such as doubly-linked-lists versus trees. Nevertheless, the analysis can detect errors in a wide range of data-structure manipulating programs, including those that use lists, trees, DAGs, graphs, etc. We present an implementation that uses the Satisfiability Modulo Constraint Handling Rules (SMCHR) system. Experimental results show that our approach works well for real-world C programs.

Abstract:
Here we provide a checklist of millipedes described or recorded in the literature from Venezuela. The diplopod fauna is comprised of eight orders, 18 families, 54 genera, and 157 species. The millipede orders Glomerida, Chordeumatida, Julida, Siphoniulida, and Platydesmida (known elsewhere in the Western Hemisphere) are not, as of yet, reported from the Venezuelan fauna. Two widely distributed invasive species, Asiomorpha coarctata and Oxidus gracilis, were recorded from Venezuela. All species records listed here contain comprehensive citation and synonymy lists. Numerous locality data are questionable and are discussed. For most species, the supposed deposition of the type specimens is given. However, the museum and gender information is taken mostly from the literature as the type specimen themselves were not examined. An analysis of records extracted from GBIF in 2016 and in 2018 was conducted and compared to the data captured from the published taxonomic literature. The data in this checklist are summarized online at the MilliBase website.

Abstract:
Floristic check-lists were compiled for the first time for Duvefjorden Bay on Nordaustlandet, Svalbard, based on field work in July 2012 and on data from literature and herbaria. The check-lists include 172 species of lichens and 51 species of vascular plants. Several species rare in Svalbard and in the Arctic were discovered: Candelariella borealis was new to Svalbard. 51 lichen species were newly recorded on Nordaustlandet and 131 lichen species were observed in the Duvefjorden area for the first time. Among lichen species rare in Svalbard and in the Arctic the following can be mentioned: Caloplaca magni-filii, C. nivalis, Lecidea silacea, Phaeophyscia nigricans, Polyblastia gothica, Protothelenella sphinctrinoidella, Rinodina conradii, Stenia geophana, and Tetramelas pulverulentus. Two species of vascular plants, Saxifraga svalbardensis and S. hyperborea, were found new to the Duvefjorden area. The investigated flora is represented mostly by species widespread in Svalbard and in the Arctic. Although Duvefjorden area is situated in the northernmost part of Svalbard, its flora is characterized by relatively high diversity of vascular plants and lichens. Apparently this is due to the influence of the warm North Atlantic Current.

Members of the Haptophyta from British waters have been listed in a number of check-lists between 1953 and 1976 (Parke, 1953; Parke & Dixon, 1964, 1968, 1976), but there has been no attempt to draw the records together on a world-wide basis. However, a recent review of the classification system of the coccolithophorids included a check-list of all species thought to be extant from marine, coastal and freshwater habitats (Jordan & Kleijne, 1994). At the same time, two ambitious projects, theEncyclopaedia of Algal Genera(ed. B.C. Parker, in preparation) and the preparation of a CD-ROM retrieval system for information on algal and protist groups by the Expert-Centre for Taxonomic Identification (ETI), have required further collation of the available records (see Note 1), and, as a result, we have now extended the scheme of Jordan & Kleijne (1994) to include a global list of all extant haptophytes.

Abstract:
BackgroundPatients often carry medication lists to mitigate information loss across healthcare settings. We aimed to identify mechanisms by which these lists could be used to support safety, key supporting features, and barriers and facilitators to their use.MethodsWe used a mixed-methods design comprising two focus groups with patients and carers, 16 semistructured interviews with healthcare professionals, 60 semistructured interviews with people carrying medication lists, a quantitative features analysis of tools available for patients to record their medicines and usability testing of four tools. Findings were triangulated using thematic analysis. Distributed cognition for teamwork models were used as sensitising concepts.ResultsWe identified a wide range of mechanisms through which carrying medication lists can improve medication safety. These included improving the accuracy of medicines reconciliation, allowing identification of potential drug interactions, facilitating communication about medicines, acting as an aide-mémoire to patients during appointments, allowing patients to check their medicines for errors and reminding patients to take and reorder their medicines. Different tools for recording medicines met different needs. Of 103 tools examined, none met the core needs of all users. A key barrier to use was lack of awareness by patients and carers that healthcare information systems can be fragmented, a key facilitator was encouragement from healthcare professionals.ConclusionOur findings suggest that patients and healthcare professionals perceive patient-held medication lists to have a wide variety of benefits. Interventions are needed to raise awareness of the potential role of these lists in enhancing patient safety. Such interventions should empower patients and carers to identify a method that suits them best from a range of options and avoid a ‘one size fits all’ approach.

To date 264 species have been recorded, accounting for 19.6% of the 1344 species recorded worldwide. One hundred and eight species are endemic to Antarctic waters, 62 to the sub-Antarctic, 63 are common in both regions, and 55 are circumpolar. The richest genus isNymphon, with 67 species and the richest area is the Scotia Sea. Comparing species lists between the years 2000 and 2007 shows that increased expeditions with more sampling has increased the circumpolarity of species and decreased zonal endemicity. The benthic insular refuge hypothesis is proposed as an explanation for the southern distribution of the present pycnogonid fauna, with an origin in the Scotia Arc.

Abstract:
ObjectiveTo review the experiences of patients attending NHS Health Checks in England.DesignA systematic review of quantitative and qualitative studies with a thematic synthesis of qualitative studies.Data sourcesAn electronic literature search of Medline, Embase, Health Management Information Consortium, Cumulative Index of Nursing and Allied Health Literature, Global Health, PsycInfo, Web of Science, OpenGrey, the Cochrane Library, National Health Service (NHS) Evidence, Google Scholar, Google, Clinical Trials.gov and the ISRCTN registry to 09/11/16 with no language restriction and manual screening of reference lists of all included papers.Inclusion criteriaPrimary research reporting experiences of patients who have attended NHS Health Checks.Results20 studies met the inclusion criteria, 9 reporting quantitative data and 15 qualitative data. There were consistently high levels of reported satisfaction in surveys, with over 80% feeling that they had benefited from an NHS Health Check. Data from qualitative studies showed that the NHS Health Check had been perceived to act as a wake-up call for many who reported having gone on to make substantial lifestyle changes which they attributed to the NHS Health Check. However, some had been left with a feeling of unmet expectations, were confused about or unable to remember their risk scores, found the lifestyle advice too simplistic and non-personalised or were confused about follow-up.ConclusionsWhile participants were generally very supportive of the NHS Health Check programme and examples of behaviour change were reported, there are a number of areas where improvements could be made. These include greater clarity around the aims of the programme within the promotional material, more proactive support for lifestyle change and greater appreciation of the challenges of communicating risk and the limitations of relying on the risk score alone as a trigger for facilitating behaviour change.

Abstract:
The effectiveness of assertiveness training, the duration of its effect, and changes in life style or relationships after training were examined in a longitudinal study of 11 white middle-class adult women who participated in a 10-wk. assertiveness training course. An assertiveness inventory, a life-style and health check list, and an interview were used as initial and follow-up measures for the trained group and a comparison group. Follow-up measures were completed six to eight weeks following training and 24 to 36 months later. Pretest assertiveness scores for the trained group were significantly lower than for the comparison group but did not differ significantly at the time of the posttest or the final follow-up test. No significant differences between groups were found on the life-style and health check lists.

Abstract:
“Clothing strips” refers to those sections of tomb inventories written on bamboo and wooden slips from the early and middle Western Han that record clothing items. The distinctive characteristics of the writing, check markings, and placement in the tomb of these clothing strips reflect funerary burial conventions of that period. “Clothing lists” from the latter part of the Western Han period are directly related to these clothing strips. Differences in format between these two types of documents are the result of changes in funerary ritual during the Western Han period.

Abstract:
Common causes of lower-extremity ulcers are relatively easy to diagnose, but exact wound diagnosis needs always a holistic approach and a careful evaluation of the wound patient. Systematic assessment and the use of check-lists provides diagnostic tools. This review aims to provide clinicians with an overview of the different aetiologies of leg ulcer by describing the clinical characteristics of each aetiology. It also aims to provide tools for health-care providers when assessing a lower-extremity ulcer patient.

Abstract:
For any iterative stochastic optimisation algorithm, it is possible to replace the Random Number Generator (RNG) by a predefined short list of numbers, used cyclically. The author presents here some experiments to check this approach. The results show that it may indeed be interesting, for the same list can be used for variants of a given problem, and even for different problems. However, there are still some important open questions, in particular about the possible methods for building the lists, which are, for the moment, quite empirical.

Abstract:
59 patients with agoraphobia and panic attacks completed check lists of physical and cognitive panic-related symptoms to estimate the extent to which respiratory distress is associated with panic. Over half of the patients reported experiencing difficulty breathing during most or all panic attacks, but respiratory difficulty was not consistently associated with panic. Further research is needed using alternative methods of assessment, but these findings suggest that biologically oriented explanations of panic which ascribe a precipitative role to respiratory dysfunction cannot account for many of the panic attacks experienced by agoraphobics.
