This chapter analyzes how, as colleges and universities expanded and became more important features of the American institutional landscape, those who occupied senior managerial positions separated themselves more completely from the faculty. They developed features of a professionalized occupation—including separate training programs and formal knowledge bases—albeit one that remained influenced by traditions of shared governance. This separation led to many complaints by faculty members about the rise of a soulless corporate model of university administration. Professionalized management did not weaken the steering capacity of universities—quite the opposite. Yet bottom-line considerations did often intrude in ways that were counterproductive to the educational mission of the institutions.

Complex aircraft require periodic maintenance checks to assess needed repairs for continued vehicle availability. However, such checks are expensive and the associated aircraft downtime can reduce fleet mission effectiveness. The United States Air Force plans to consolidate the time-based (isochronal) C-5 aircraft major inspection activities for eight C-5 home stations into three locations. Isochronal inspections rely on a calendar method to schedule inspections and disregard actual flying hours between inspections. By having the same personnel perform these inspections for all flying units and by adopting commercial aircraft condition-based inspection strategies, the Air Force hopes to gain efficiencies in performing these inspections. Conversely, the site phase-out schedule and reduced number of inspection locations raises questions about whether overall C-5 mission capability will be reduced. These proposed revisions were simulated in a designed experiment to assess the impacts to fleet availability and inspection site workload.

This chapter presents a portrait of the dominant system for organizing and pursuing knowledge and the contributions of that system to American life. It aims to convey some of the hidden strengths of the current system while revealing several of the vulnerabilities that have made it a target for those who would like to use it for more exclusively utilitarian purposes. While it is true that much academic research is intended for other academics, it is easy to miss the many unheralded ways that academic research informs public discourse, public policy, and organizational processes. The chapter then attempts to offer a more rounded picture of the contributions made by university researchers and educators than can be found in the critical literature.

Abstract:
This chapter considers the British musical over the last thirty years. As pop operas continued to appear, Chess (1986), Tim Rice's collaboration with Benny Anderson and Björn Ulvaes (from the Swedish pop group ABBA), was considered a classy example, centered on a rivalry of chess champions. ABBA's catalogue in the jukebox show Mamma Mia! (1999) creates a line-up of point numbers fitted into an innocuous story. In comparison, Chess tells of globally dangerous affairs of state and is very precisely musicalized with just one incongruous number, “One Night In Bangkok,” which would seem to have been created solely to guarantee a big hit song. Claude-Michel Schönberg and Alain Boublil, understanding that the proper launching site for an international success was London or New York, gave the West End Miss Saigon (1989) and Martin Guerre (1996). With such serious musicals as Girl From the North Country (2017) and the pop-opera cycle commanding the scene, musical comedy as such started to become scarce, though Spamalot (Broadway 2005; West End 2006) showed the comedy musical is still capable of claiming smash hit status.

Full text
Abstract:
The results of an X-ray structure analysis are coordinates of the individual, chemically identified atoms in each unit cell, the space group (which gives equivalent positions), and displacement parameters that may be interpreted as indicative of molecular motion and/or disorder. Such data obtained from crystal structure analyses may be incorporated into a CIF or mmCIF (Crystallographic Information File or Macromolecular Crystallographic Information File). These ensure that the results of crystal structure analyses are usefully archived. There are many checks that the crystallographer can make to ensure that the CIF or mmCIF file is correctly informative. For example, the automated validation program PLATON (Spek, 2003) checks that all data reported are up to the standards required for publication by the International Union of Crystallography. It does geometrical calculations on the structure, illustrates the results, finds if any symmetry has been missed, investigates any twinning, and checks if the structure has already been reported. We now review the ways in which these atomic parameters can be used to obtain a three-dimensional vision of the entire crystal structure. When molecules crystallize in an orthorhombic, tetragonal, or cubic unit cell it is reasonably easy to build a model using the unit-cell dimensions and fractional coordinates, because all the interaxial angles are 90◦. However, the situation is more complicated if the unit cell contains oblique axes and it is often simpler to convert the fractional crystal coordinates to orthogonal coordinates before calculating molecular geometry. The equations for doing this for bond lengths, interbond angles, and torsion angles are presented in Appendix 12. If the reader wishes to compute interatomic distances directly, this is also possible if one knows the cell dimensions (a, b, c, ∝ , β , γ ,), the fractional atomic coordinates (x, y, z for each atom), and the space group.

Small, private colleges are run by a president, who sets strategy, while working with senior-level staff and faculty to fulfill mission. The president of a small, private college must set the tone for leadership and communication, devise strategic plans, and appoint staff to accomplish those initiatives, raise funds, and attend campus events and cheer on students. Athletics in the small, private college setting is an important component for enrollment, campus life, and budget. NCAA Division III institutions, largely small, private colleges, incorporate athletics into campus life and position the student before the athlete. The presidents of these institutions are keenly aware of how athletics influences the small, private college landscape. This chapter explores the convergence of the unique role of the small, private college presidency and the influence of athletics. The authors explore the extant literature and present key findings from a case study of one small, private college president and their view of the influence of athletics on the institution and the role of presidency.

Chapter Three focuses on the story of the first biracial, Navajo-African American “Miss Navajo Nation,” Radmilla Cody (born to Tp’ááschí’í, or Red Cheek People Clan). Fluent in Navajo and raised by her maternal grandmother on the Navajo Nation, I show how Radmilla’s singing voice, by performing “traditional” songs with melismatic, R & B inflection in the Navajo language, signals both inclusion and exclusion within Navajo communities. Here, sounding other than “Navajo” is a way of refusing to adhere to the ascribed status of Diné identity, including phenotype and what it means to “look Navajo.” Radmilla’s voice is a signifier of the intricacies of Diné social difference and as a meeting point of the singular and the social: as something innate and idiosyncratic to each singer and speaker, Radmilla’s voice is also something that is learned, socially acquired, and culturally inscribed.

There is a direct need in industry to improve the in-production vehicle inspection process and to support mobility for inspection stations. In this paper we present a novel interface design implemented on three multi-modal prototype systems, in which design was based on results from an initial field study we conducted. The design of these systems incorporate two main objectives: 1) enforce a systematic check on each of the items on the list to reduce missed items and 2) facilitate mobility in that the tools used to assist in inspection can be installed at one area and then later easily moved t

TransCanada was faced with a significant challenge to inspect a 941 km NPS 48 pipeline. The options for the inline inspection (ILI) were multiple segments which would cause an increased cost with new pigging facilities required and a delay to the ILI schedule or attempt to pig the longest natural gas pipeline section in North America. The extraordinary proposal would require a massive 48″ combination Magnetic Flux Leakage (MFL) tool to traverse a high-speed gas pipeline 941km from Burstall, Saskatchewan to Ile des Chenes, Manitoba, Canada. Given the alternative of the installation of 3 additio
