A vast number of sites that have been contaminated by industrial activities have been identified worldwide. Many such sites now pose serious risks to humans and the environment. Given the large number of contaminated sites there is a great need for efficient, cost-effective  remediation methods. Extensive research has therefore been focused on the development of such methods. However, the remediation of old industrial sites is challenging, for several reasons. One major  problem is that organic contaminants become increasingly strongly sequestered as they persist in the soil matrix for a long

The chemical results are compared to predictions using a thermodynamic model. Physical properties are important because they govern the rate at which the Hanford tanks can be emptied thus facilitating the remediation process. Monitored natural attenuation is a cost-effective remediation strategy for the risk reduction of chemicals of concern (CoCs) in contaminated land and waters. The sites differed by their prevalent type of CoC, with one site impacted by polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH), and two sites, situated in Hilden, impacted by BTEX. The work presented here shows the use of alkylcarbonic acids, which form in situ with CO₂ pressure and neutralize on loss of CO₂ pressure rather than requiring a base. PAHs can be found in coal and petroleum, but can also be formed from incomplete combustion of for example fossil fuels, tobacco, wood and when smoking food.
