Several chemical industries in Canada discharge untreated effluents containing substantial amounts of organic pollutants. Environmental concern regarding the pollution of water bodies has led the authorities to issue stringent regulations with respect to the quality and quantity of wastewater that can be discharged. Chemical characterization and biotreatability of some waste streams generated by a chemical industry in Quebec was therefore undertaken. The study showed that two highly concentrated effluents were amenable to biological treatment. The first effluent, "plastifiant", was generated f

In the first part, ferrate was compared to Fenton's reagent for the purpose of removing non-biodegradable organic compounds from mature leachate. Oxidation conditions (time, pH, and dose) were optimized to yield maximum organic removal using two leachate samples from 20 and 12-year old solid waste cells. Results from this research demonstrated that ferrate and Fenton's reagent had similar optimum pH ranges (3

Abstract:
In the new millennium, over 500 million rechargeable battery operated and miniaturized pieces of electronic equipment will be in circulation. A battery market survey showed that the average annual growth rate of Li-ion batteries will increase by 118%. The millions of spent Li-ion batteries will cause an environmental waste management problem. The cathode metals, which have a high market value (54 US$/kg cobalt) will leach into the earth when land filled.
A transferred arc process was proposed in which the Li-ion battery waste would be separated into volatile, slag and metal phases usi

Abstract:
碩士
國立交通大學
環境工程所
91
The treatment of the fluoride-containing wastewater and the enormous amount of sludge generated has been a challenge for the HSIP. Fluoride-containing wastewater is generated during the etching and clean processes of semiconductor production. The range of fluoride concentration is usually between 200 and 500 mg/l. However, concentrations as high as 1000 to 2000 mg/l have been reported. In Taiwan, the most popular way of treating the fluoride-containing wastewater is the precipitation/coagulation/sedimentation process. The fluoride is first precipita
