Full textRegeneration in logging trails following irregular shelterwood cutting was assessed in Quebec’s boreal forest. In each of five sites, a regeneration inventory was carried out and study plots were installed for this evaluation. Two years after harvest, average regeneration density and stocking in logging trails were 10 780 stems•ha-1 and 77%, respectively. Regeneration density was negatively affected by increasing slash cover across all study sites. Seedling establishment was influenced by direct seeding, position within the logging trail, and substrate type. Environmental conditions were adequate: light availability was sufficient and severe soil compaction was limited. Direct seeding was not very effective on these sites, but the planted black spruce stock responded well. Results suggest that regeneration in logging trails was abundant and well distributed in the first two years after harvest.

Full textThe mining company ArcelorMittal Mines Canada operates in Mont-Wright near the town of Fermont, an ore deposit consisting mainly of hematite (Fe2O3) as a valuable mineral and silica (SiO2) as gangue. The extracted ore from the mine is crushed and then ground and iron minerals are concentrated by spirals. The concentrate is then sent by train to the pelletizing plant in the city of Port-Cartier. A portion of the concentrate is sold as is and the other part is treated to produce iron oxide pellets for steel mills. For certain types of dumplings, the silica content of the concentrate should be reduced to less than 1.2 to 1.4%. For having the silica content required by customers (steelworks), the pellet plant uses hydraulic classifiers. The objective of the project is to study the operation of the hydraulic classifier to identify the role and effect of process variables (for a better control) and ultimately to propose a model for this equipment. Several tests were carried out on the hydraulic classifiers of pelletizing plant of ArcelorMittal to observe the impact of process variables on the density of the pulp bed and output variables (particle size distribution and chemical composition) of the classifier but especially on performance variables (weight yield and silica content in the underflow) for this equipment. The operation of the hydraulic classifier has been studied from the minerals sharing curves, an approach that has not been used frequently in the literature on these devices. Data from these sampling campaigns were used to calibrate an empirical model and simulate, in a simplified manner, the operation of the hydraulic classifier. These data have finally allowed to find that this device, operation of which is simple at first view, is actually complex and the development of a phenomenological model is necessary to arrive at strategies to establish effective control to regulate the operation of classifier.

Full textIn Quebec, drains installed in sandy loam soils are susceptible to clogging by silt and/or by iron ochre. In the past, drains with slot widths smaller than 2 mm were used with a woven filter of 110 microns or knitted filter of 450 microns. Recently, drains with slot widths larger than 2 mm and a filter of 250 microns were introduced on the market but have never been tested. The project aimed to determine the speed at which silting and iron clogging will happen for different combinations of drains (slot widths 1,8 mm and 3 mm) and filters (110 μm, 250 μm et 450 μm) in a Becancour’s sandy soil. An experimental randomized complete block (3) design was used. The flow rates were measured at the outlet of each experimental plot and the heights of water table were measured with a bubbler in piezometers. The monitoring of physicochemical parameters (pH, redox potential and Fe2+ content) was performed in ground water and water from the drain outlet. The drains excavated 13 months after their installation only show traces of sediments and of iron ochre. Concentrations in Fe2+ are significantly lower in the water from the outlet drains than water from the ground water table. Iron clogging process seems to begin and its impacts are not measurable in terms of flow rates at the drain outlets.

Full textContext: In First Nations communities, anemia and iron deficiency (ID) are frequent pediatric conditions with diverse adverse health outcomes. Iron is a divalent metal that shares absorptive pathways with cadmium (Cd), cobalt (Co), manganese (Mn), lead (Pb) and zinc (Zn) in the gastrointestinal tract; ID upregulates their uptake and likely their toxicity in humans. The present study examines the prevalence of anemia, ID and their determinants as well as study associations between ID status and other divalent metals among First Nations youth. METHODS: The 2015, First Nation Youth Environment and Health (JES!-YEH!) pilot study was conducted among children and teenagers (3 to 19 y, n = 198) from four First Nations communities in Quebec. Blood, hair, urine samples and anthropometric measurements were collected. Hemoglobin, serum ferritin (SF), blood Cd, Pb, Mn, and Co, plasma Zn and hs-CRP, hair Mn and urinary cotinine levels were measured. Determinants (including traditional and market food consumption) were assessed using an interview-administered questionnaire, based on which nutritional intakes were calculated. Descriptive analyses were performed, and structural equation models were used to test associations. RESULTS: The prevalence of anemia and ID was elevated (17.7% and 20.8% respectively) in JES!-YEH! study participants. Traditional meats, fruit and fruit juice consumption (natural and powdered) - via their positive association with vitamin C intake - were the food variables positively associated with SF. Male sex was also associated with higher SF. The inflammatory status was associated with lower hemoglobin, while higher SF was in turn associated with higher hemoglobin. As for SF, fruit and juice consumption were positively associated with hemoglobin, via vitamin C intake and SF, and this although, most participants presented sufficient iron and vitamin C intakes. Blood Mn was significantly higher than in the Canadian Health Measures Survey of the same age groups, and SF was inversely associated with blood Co and Mn. Again, fruits and juice consumption were inversely associated with blood Mn via vitamin C intake and SF. No significant association between SF and other divalent metals was found. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings suggest that interventions fighting inflammation and fostering healthier food environments as well as higher consumption of traditional meats and foods naturally rich in vitamin C, which is known to enhance iron absorption, could decrease anemia and ID and ultimately, restore blood Mn and Co homeostasis. Key words: Childhood anemia; iron deficiency; First Nations; vitamin C; inflammation; manganese; cobalt.
Sarvaramini, Amin. "New routes to enhance the efficiency of biomass torrefaction and gasification processes (Potentials for valorization of lignocellulosic biomass and mining residues)." Thesis, Université Laval, 2014. http://www.theses.ulaval.ca/2014/30571/30571.pdf.
Full textThe aim of the proposed research was to provide a better understanding of the mechanisms of biomass torrefaction and to propose practical methods to improve the efficiency of this process. As for the mechanism, torrefaction of two woody biomass samples from Quebec forests (aspen and birch) and their main constituents, i.e., lignin, cellulose and hemicellulose is studied in details using different experimental techniques and a kinetic model is developed for their torrefaction. Our studies on the mechanism and kinetics of biomass torrefaction also revealed the slow rate of biomass torrefaction which motivated us to propose and develop a new ionic-liquid assisted torrefaction process with the aim of increasing the rate of biomass torrefaction. Although torrefaction improves the physicochemical properties of biomass fuel, release of oxygenated hydrocarbons (in the form of volatiles) from biomass reduces its overall energy. To recover volatiles energy, a new combination of biomass torrefaction and chemical looping volatiles combustion was studied. In this regard, the already comminuted, abundant and cheap iron and magnesium bearing silicate minerals found widely in the form of mining residues in the province of Quebec were tested as solid oxygen carrier and up to 96% of volatiles conversion at 700°C was achieved in CLC reactor. As a supplementary work, we were also interested to explore the potential of mining residues containing sizeable quantities of iron for catalytic cracking of tar released during the gasification of biomass. For this purpose, iron-bearing mining residues and minerals obtained from the mining activities in Quebec were evaluated comparatively to olivine (known as an active mineral for tar cracking) for benzene cracking in simulated syngas. It was found that chrysotile showed up to four-fold increase in benzene and methane conversion than olivine.
