Western Kentucky University (WKU) offered a course entitled Biochemistry for the Health Sciences in the spring semester of 2007. The course was taught in Interactive Television (ITV) format, and was the first time a class had been taught in the format enabling two-way communication by the Chemistry Department. One section was present in an ITV broadcast classroom on the main campus in Bowling Green, Kentucky. This thesis describes the design of unique classes of 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition reagents. The purpose of this study was to develop general and practical methods for the modular syntheses of heterocycles via 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition. In order to expand on the growing field on Surface Plasmon Resonance Spectroscopy (SPRS) the application of SPRS to Conducting Metal Oxides (CMO) was studied. A new approach for design and fabrication of new photoresponsive and biomimetic materials is described using theoretical predictions and experimental characterisations. Novel discrete hydrogen-bonded aggregates are formed from photoresponsive azodibenzoic acid building blocks, which can undergo a reversible cis-trans photoisomerisation. A state-of-the-art gas electron diffraction (GED) apparatus has been reassembled in the school of chemistry at the University of Edinburgh.
