Abstract:
The rate of oxidation of copper metal to copper (I) by copper (II) in the presence of organic ligands has been determined for a variety of ligands using a flow injection analysis system to sample the reaction. The results obtained using the FIA sampling method compare favorably with those obtained in eariler work when allyl alcohol was used as the ligand. The mechanism proposed in that earlier work has been shown to be a general mechanism for the oxidation of copper metal in the presence of complexing ligands. It was found that some ligands increase the rate of the reaction beyond the ability

The purpose of this study is to find out what students in the first chemistry course at the undergraduate level (general chemistry for science majors) know about the affordances of instrumentation used in the general chemistry laboratory and how their knowledge develops over time. Overall, students see the PASCO™ system as a useful and accurate measuring tool for general chemistry labs. They see the probeware as easy to use, portable, and able to interact with computers. Students find that the PASCO™ probeware system is useful in their general chemistry labs, more advanced chemistry labs, and

This study documents an effort to design and construct an apparatus for the continuous generation hydrogen atoms to convert aliphatic and aromatic molecules to their respective dimers, by free radical mechanisms. The addition of hydrogen atoms to alkene and aromatic molecules, and hydrogen atom abstraction from alkanes by atomic hydrogen, followed by dimerization or disproportionation has been extensively studied. Emphasis here is placed on proving the efficacy of this device by production of known dimeric products. This prototype incorporates critical factors known to effect gas phase free ra

Prehydrolyzed n-octadecyltriethoxysilane (OTE) molecules were self-assembled as a monolayer on both untreated and argon/water vapor plasma-treated mica. The properties and stability of these monolayers have been qualitatively and quantitatively investigated with a surface forces apparatus (SFA) under various environmental conditions The interaction force between the OTE monolayers immersed in water showed that plasma treatment reduced the range of the steep short-range repulsion and motivated the water vapor studies. The humidity tests revealed a substantial monolayer swelling in the untreated

The surface force apparatus (SFA) has been an important technique for making direct force measurements and has contributed enormously to our understanding of colloidal interactions. The conventional SFA has been limited to measuring forces between solid surfaces, until recently when a modified SFA was developed at the Ian Wark Research Institute [1]. A fluid drop (mercury) is introduced into the apparatus which allows a range of deformable surfaces to be studied in the SFA. This project is an extension of this technique. A new FT-ICR apparatus (Fourier Transform - Ion Cyclotron Resonance) has been developed, where clusters produced in a laser vaporization supersonic cluster source were efficiently injected and trapped in an elongated cylindrical Penning type ion trap located in the center of a magnetic field of 6 Tesla. The successful injection of multiple cluster pulses into the ion trap makes the experiment largely independent of the intensity of the supersonic cluster source. Long trapping times of up to 30 minutes and a high mass resolution are additional features of this apparatus. In a first application,
