Abstract:
Ampelocalamus Chen et al. (1981: 332) and Drepanostachyum Keng (1983: 15) are two subtropical clumping genera in the tribe Arundinarieae Ascherson & Graebner (1902: 770) of the subfamily Bambusoideae Luerssen (1893: 451) in the Poaceae (Barnhart 1895: 7) (Bamboo Phylogeny Group 2012). These two genera were confused by the transfer of most species from Ampelocalamus to Drepanostachyum (Keng 1986, Yi 1993, Yi et al. 2008). Ampelocalamus differs from Drepanostachyum in several characters: Ampelocalamus has subscandent culms, a corky collar frequently present on the nodal sheath scars, pendulous spikelets, and adaxially distally glabrous culm sheaths, while Drepanostachyum has self-supporting culms, nodal sheath scars without a corky collar, erect or spreading spikelets, and adaxially distally scabrid culm sheaths (Chen et al. 1981, Keng 1983, Li 1997, Stapleton et al. 2005, Li & Stapleton 2006). Ampelocalamus comprises ca. 14 species distributed from the central Himalayan region to southern China with 13 species endemic to China (Li & Stapleton 2006).

Abstract:
Abstract References to native culture are frequently in the foreground of works by Chinese women artists. When they make contact with different cultures, although not necessarily connected with leaving their place of birth thanks to the transfer of information and cultural heritage that has developed extremely efficiently in the era of globalization (Gordon Mathews), they see their own entanglement in the cultural tradition. In the process of constructing their identity they try to find answers to the following question: which part of the cultural tradition is mine? Which one do I identify with? In the case of Chinese women artists, is it the legacy of literati? Classic ink painting and calligraphy? Or perhaps women's crafts that bear no name? Or perhaps a mixture of inspirations? Such questions about material heritage might also be augmented by others that consider aspects of the immaterial heritage of China. This article explores how Chinese women artists such as Chen Qingqing, Qin Yufen, Shi Hui, Wang Xiaohui, Cheng Caroline, Lin Tianmiao, Zhang Yanzi, Man Fung-yi, Liu Liyun, Peng Wei, Chen Lingyang, Chen Qiulin, Zhang Ou and Liu Ren refer to their cultural tradition.

Abstract:
AbstractThe Huntian yi zhu is one of the earliest surviving works on astronomy in ancient China. It is traditionally attributed to Zhang Heng (78-139) of the Eastern Han. Modern scholars have studied the text for the past seven decades and there seems to be agreement on its interpretation, especially on its mathematical contents. This article identifies one major flaw in the assumptions among the modern studies of the piece: the term shao ban, incorrectly taken to mean “one quarter,” should mean “one third.” The mathematical interpretation of the Huntian yi zhu by scholars including Christopher Cullen and Chen Meidong has to be reworked. A new reading is presented here, which demonstrates Zhang Heng's meticulousness on the one hand and our adherence to the philological principle of lectio difficilior potior (the more difficult reading is the stronger) on the other.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to examine Monologue (Impressions on The True Story of Ah Q and Feng, two works by the composer Chen Yi (b. 1953) with regard to four important elements in her music. These elements are eclecticism in pitch materials, numerically-based rhythmic and formal constructions, original approach to timbre, and original approach to texture. Chapter one consists of a brief biography of the composer, including a description of the compositional movement known as the New Wave. Chapter two summarizes several analytical approaches to Chen's music, with special attention to the method developed by Xin Guo, and her analysis of Chen's Woodwind Quintet. The analytical method of this study, which is similar to Guo's method, is then explained. Chapter three consists of an analysis of Monologue (Impressions on The True Story of Ah Q (1993) for solo clarinet. Chapter four consists of an analysis of Feng (1998) for wind quintet. In chapter five, these two works are compared to each other and to Woodwind Quintet (1987).

Shaw, Chih-Suei. "Discourses of identity in contemporary East Asian music : Chen Yi, Unsuk Chin and Karen Tanaka." Thesis, University of Oxford, 2016. https://ora.ox.ac.uk/objects/uuid:ba190cc6-08ee-407d-a507-b4d2c23e619a.

Full text
Abstract:
Discourses of identity in East Asian new music are often limited to tracing ethnographic materials or conceptual influences from the composers' cultures of origin. Existing analytical approaches tend to look for the musical features that are emblematic of the cultures in question, and to map relationships between the contemporary and traditional musical aspects. Composers who resist employing their native traditions as musical tropes, however, problematise discussions of their identity and are consequently overlooked in studies of identity politics. This thesis therefore examines questions of identity through a focus on three contemporary composers who, in diverse ways, challenge and complicate essentialising expressions of East Asian identity: Chinese composer Chen Yi (1953-), Korean composer Unsuk Chin (1961-) and Japanese composer Karen Tanaka (1961-). All of them came to Europe or the United States to hone their skills in the mid-1980s and have since developed their musical careers in the Western world. They have been selected for examination due to their radically different reactions to the East-meets-West question; namely, Chen Yi's embracing of cultural fusion; Unsuk Chin's reaction against cultural fusion; and Karen Tanaka's lack of interest in cultural fusion. To demonstrate this variation, this thesis analyses the works of these composers, their personal viewpoints and the critical reception of their works. Beyond discussing conventional notions of identity and difference, this dissertation explores the ways in which these composers complicate their perceived dissimilarity by embracing a 'universal music' ideal. Chapter One explores Chen Yi's musical identity as defined by her idea of 'cultural translation' and her musical goal of enhancing intercultural communication; where Chen Yi affirms cultural fusion, her work contributes to the traditional idea of 'East-meets-West'. Chapter Two examines an alternative approach in the case of Unsuk Chin, who consciously avoids the practice of cultural hybridity by locating her work squarely within the Western tradition. Chapters Three examines the works of two Japanese composers - Toru Takemitsu and Karen Tanaka - who focus their attention not on cultural fusion but on natural themes. The first section of Chapter Three presents Toru Takemitsu's Japanese-based philosophy of the co-creative bond between nature and humanity, which serves as a foil for Karen Tanaka's evolving, observational relationship with the natural world. To conclude, I compare the identity choices and the musical representations in the three case studies of Chen Yi, Unsuk Chin and Karen Tanaka. By gaining a better understanding of each composer's music, this thesis aims to provide a more expansive discourse of identity formation in contemporary East Asian art music, and to offer a critical rethinking of what counts as an 'Asian perspective' in this field.

Full text
Abstract:
A modified low-Reynolds number k-ε model (named YI-diffn. model) for predicting effects of high free stream turbulence (FST) on momentum transport and heat transfer in a flat plate turbulent boundary layer is presented. An additional turbulent kinetic energy (TKE) diffusion term incorporating the effects of FST intensity (velocity scale) and length scale was included in the TKE equation. This model was developed with experience from many years of experimental and theoretical studies in the area of high FST flows. The constant cμ in the equation for the transport coefficient μt was modified using experimental data. These modifications were applied to a well-tested k-ε model (K-Y Chien called KYC in this study) under high FST conditions (initial FST intensity, Tui > 5%). Models were implemented in a 2-D boundary layer code. The high FST zero pressure gradient data sets against which the predictions (in the turbulent region) were compared had initial FST intensities of 6.53% and 25.7%. In a previous paper, it was shown that predictions of the original k-ε models became poorer (over prediction up to more than 50% for skin friction coefficient and Stanton number, and under prediction of TKE up to more than 50%) as FST increased to about 26%. In comparison, the new model developed here provided excellent results (within ±3% of experimental data) for skin friction coefficient and Stanton number for both the data sets. TKE results were excellent for Tui = 6.53%, but have scope for improvement in the case of Tui = 25.7%. The present model incorporates physics of transport of free stream turbulence in turbulence modeling and provides a new method for simulating flows with high FST. Future work will focus upon improving the model further and applying it to practical applications like flow over gas turbine blades.
