Abstract:
Repetitive lithium (Li) metal deposition and stripping on conductive substrates such as copper is a critical process involved in the rechargeable Li batteries for high energy applications. Most of the time, the reversibility of this deposition and stripping process by electrochemical methods is of paramount importance for long life performance of these batteries. Solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) formation and the dendritic formation of Li whiskers are often cited as the challenges in achieving a uniform, reversible Li deposition and stripping in the process, rendering a short life duration of these batteries for practical applications. The fundamental question of how Li metal nucleates and grows on the conductive substrate has not been well understood until some recent experiments and in situ, operando observations [1,2] began to shed light on this process to offer some clues how to control the morphology of the Li deposition and stripping process. Here, a collection of experimental evidence and molecular dynamics simulations are presented to provide some insight of this seemingly straightforward process of elemental metal deposition. An explanation to peel off the mystery of the Li nucleation and growth from the atomic level to the micro (<20 nm), meso (20-100 nm), and the macro-scale (>100 nm) is offered to provide some guidance of the control needed to regulate the morphology. Success to demonstrate some highly dense and reversible Li deposition and stripping is shown. References: Fang, B. Lu, G. Pawar, M. Zhang, D. Cheng, S. Chen, M. Ceja, J.-M. Doux, M. Cai, B. Liaw, Y. Abstract:
`Xiao Fang Shi' is a rare, dwarf cultivar of persimmon (Diospyros kaki Linn cv.) recently found north of Shanghai, China. The tree starts to bear fruit at 2 years of age, while standard trees start fruiting at 5 or 6 years of age. Dwarf and standard cultivars have about equal spring shoot growth, but the dwarf cultivar has little fall growth. To determine the mechanisms of dwarfness and early fruiting, enzyme-linked immunosorbant assay (ELISA) was used to analyze the endogenous indoleacetic acid (IAA), gibberellic acid (GA1+3) and abscicic acid (ABA) contents in leaves and shoot tips of dwarf (`Xiao Fang Shi') and standard (`Da Fang Shi' and `Zhu Sha Hong') persimmon. The measurement was done during the entire growing season. The results showed that IAA, GA1+3, and ABA contents were influenced by cultivars, ages of trees, and phenophases. The dwarf cultivar `Xiao Fang Shi' has lower IAA and GA1+3 but higher ABA contents than the two standard cultivars during the growing season. These correlations are especially evident when the fruit is ripening. The correlation coefficiency between contents of IAA and GA1+3 and tree height was 0.9704, while that between ABA content and tree height is –0.9697. The low IAA and GA, and high ABA contents may be responsible for little shoot growth of the dwarf cultivar in the fall.

Abstract:
Statement of the problem. The twentieth century marked an increased interest in polyphonic music. The geography of polyphonic works for piano expanded significantly and a creative development of many Chinese composers, writing polyphonic piano pieces, took place. Today, polyphonic pieces make up a significant part of the piano repertoire in China, but they are little studied by musicologists and performers. The objective of this study – to reveal the contribution of Chinese composers to the creation of polyphonic piano repertoire of the XX – early XXI century. Analysis of the research and publications on the theme. А large number of modern authors study polyphony from the point of physical and mathematical research methods (Igarashi, Yu. & Ito, Masashi & Ito, Akinori, 2013; Weiwei, Zhang & Zhe, Chen, & Fuliang, Yin, 2016; Li, Xiaoquan et al. others, 2018). This approach does not reveal the factual musical component of polyphonic genres. In the 20th century, musicologists explored polyphony in musical folklore (Wiant, 1936; Fan Zuyin, 2004; Li Hong, 2015) and in professional Chinese composing (Sun Wei-bo, 2006, Winzenburg, 2018). The scientific novelty. This article studies the role of Chinese composers in the development of the world polyphonic piano repertoire of the XX – early XXI century. The methodological basis for the analysis of polyphonic works was the theoretical concepts of P. Hindemith, Peng Cheng, Fang Zuin, Li Hong, Sun Wei-bo. The results of the study. The research outcomes demonstrate the evolutionary development of the genre diversity of Chinese piano polyphony as well as those composers who created magnificent musical pieces. Conclusions. Chinese composers have fully mastered the art of modern counterpoint, represented by the genres of polyphonic program pieces (He Lu Ting), invention (Xiao Shu Xian, Du Qian, Sun Yun Yin, Chen Chen Quang), polyphonic suite (Ma Gui), large polyphonic cycle ( He Shao, Chen Hua Do, Xiao Shu Xian), fugue (Li Jun Yong, Yu Su Yan, Chen Gang, Tian Lei Lei, Duan Ping Tai, Zheng Zhong, Xiao Shu Xian) and small cycle “Prelude and Fugue” (Ding Shan Te, Chen Zhi Ming, Wang Li Shan). Creatively assimilating and rethinking the experience of Western polyphonists, Chinese composers have filled their polyphonic works with national features, firmly linking them with the origins of Chinese traditional and folk music. The polyphonic way of transmitting musical material becomes the most expressive at the moments of profound creativity and musical dramatization.

Abstract:
Recently, sulfonamides have been shown to be promising electrolyte components due to their high chemical and electrochemical stability in lithium batteries [1, 2]. The electrolyte stability becomes critical when applying high voltage and/or utilizing Ni-rich layered oxides in high energy density lithium-ion batteries. Another approach to successful Ni-rich cathode performance is to develop a stable and effective cathode electrolyte interphase (CEI). Given the success of sultones and sulfates in this regard [3, 4], it is hypothesized that nitrogen analogs, like sulfonamides, could be tailored to provide a similar benefit. Indeed, Yim et al. [5, 6] have shown that N,N,N’,N’-tetraethylsulfamide (TES) forms a CEI on NMC811 that imparts high voltage cycling stability and less cathode corrosion. Our earlier studies of TES with Ni-rich NCA also formed a favorable CEI and these results are the topic of this presentation. Herein, we examine the performance of 0 - 4 wt.% TES in our commercially available, high power INR18650-P28A. These cells contain a composite SiO/graphite anode in addition to a Ni-rich cathode. As shown in Fig 1, TES significantly decreased the impedance of the cathode interface after conditioning compared to the control electrolyte. Thereafter, cells containing up to 2%TES show improved capacity retention during long-term high-rate cycling (+1C/-80W). Part of this success was due to a suppression of resistance growth during cycling by TES. Fast charge cycling (+3C/-2C), however, was moderately impaired with increased TES. Considering the largely reduced impedance of the cathode, fast-charge performance may have suffered due to anode rate limitations. These results will be discussed as well as gas generation, storage performance, and additional rate and cycling tests. [1] Shuting Feng, Mingjun Huang, Jessica R. Abstract:
Abstract Background Colorectal cancer (CRC) has a high incidence and mortality. In CRC, the lung is the most common extra-abdominal site of metastasis. Understanding the genetic characteristics and clonal evolution of primary tumor and lung metastases (LM) will help oncologists better outline treatments. To date, few studies for CRC with LM exist. As such, revealing the genetic characteristics and clonal evolution of resectable CRC with LM was the goal of this study. Methods From January 2012 to July 2019, clinical data and formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded samples were collected from 33 Chinese CRC patients. Nineteen (19) primary tumors and 10 matched LM samples were examined using a 450 cancer gene next-generation sequencing assay. Genomic alterations, including single base substitutions, indels, copy number variations (CNVs), and gene fusion and rearrangement, were assessed. A phylogenetic reconstruction of sequencing data using LICHeE was also performed for each patient. Results Median patient age was 60 years old (48-67 years), with most having right lung metastasis. A significant difference existed between single (21/33, 63.6%) and multiple LM (12/33, 36.4%) (P < 0.01). Median disease-free survival was 20 months (95% CI, 0-84), from primary CRC to LM. The most frequently mutated genes were TP53 (90%), APC (90%), KRAS (53%), MUC16 (26%), ARID1A (21%). A comparison of mutational profiles for primary and matched LM samples revealed that 65.70% of alterations were consistent and that the most frequently mutated genes, including APC, TP53, and KRAS, of the primary tumor were completely consistent with LM. However, some differences between metastatic and primary samples were determined. More CNVs were found in primary samples (11.4% vs. 4.6%), indicating that CNVs are early molecular events for tumorigenesis and disease progression. SMAD4 was only present in two primary samples, while LRP1B was only present in two LM samples. Clonal evolution for eight patients indicated that phylogenetic structure was similar across patients. All patients had at least seven mutations on trunks. In trunks, TP53 (87.5%), APC (87.5%), KRAS (50%), and LRP2 (37.5%) were frequently identified. A new actionable gene (BRCA2) emerged in LM sample was identified in one patient. The mean value of TMB for the primary was almost the same as that for the LM site (5.3 vs. 5 muts/Mb, P > 0.05). Conclusions Our data indicated that the genetic characteristics and clonal evolution of LM are highly consistent with those of the primary tumor, suggesting that suitable treatments can be selected based on the genetic characteristics of primary tumor in CRC patients with LM that cannot be surgically treated. Abstract:
Abstract Background: Gastric cancer (GC) ranks the fifth most common cancer and the fourth most frequent cause of cancer-related deaths. Genomically stable gastric cancers (GSGCs) represent 20% of all GCs and GSGC patients have the worst prognosis among all GC subtypes. Although two HER2-targeted antibody-drug conjugates (ADCs), RC48 and DS8201, have shown promising clinical efficacies, most GSGC patients do not benefit from these ADCs due to the infrequent and heterogeneous HER2 expression. Therefore, there remains a significant and unmet medical need for developing novel ADCs targeting GSGC tumors. Methods: In this presented study, a quantitative and unbiased approach was first used to identify potential targets for GSGC in a panel of human GSGC cell lines in reference with two normal human gastric epithelial cells. Cell membrane localizations of potential targets on GSGC cell lines were determined by immunofluorescent (IF) staining. To correlate it with clinically-relevant GSGC tumor samples, immunohistochemical (IHC) staining of potential targets were performed in human diffuse GC tumor tissues along with normal gastric tissues. Next, GSGC cellular internalization capability of antibodies against potential targets was evaluated. Then, an optimized target was selected for developing GSGC-targeted ADCs. A series of ADC formulations with different linkers and payloads were constructed and characterized. Their anti-tumor activities against GSGC cell lines were subsequently screened in order to identify the optimized ADC formulation. Eventually, the anti-tumor activity and biosafety profile of the optimized ADC formulation were determined in suppressing tumor growth, progression and metastasis by using established orthotopic and peritoneal metastasis models of GSGC. Results: We first identified CD54 as a potential molecular target for human GSGCs using comparative flow cytometric analysis. We next evaluated its potential as an ADC target for GSGC-targeted therapy by determining its overexpression levels, cell membrane localizations, and cell internalization activity in GSGC cells. Furthermore, we constructed and characterized a panel of CD54-targeted ADCs and identified an optimized ADC formulation by quantitatively determining their half maximum inhibitory concentrations (IC50s) and validated its anti-tumor efficacy against GSGC tumors. Meanwhile, there was no evidence to indicate histopathological damages to normal organs in the optimized ADC treated group. Conclusions: In this study, we identified a molecular target for GSGC using an unbiased and quantitative screening assay and explored its potential application in developing GSGC-targeted ADCs. In order to maximize its efficacy, we optimized the ADC formulations against GSGC cells using different ADC linkers and payloads. Our study provides a promising targeted therapeutic candidate for the clinical treatment of GSGC. Abstract:
Can Gio mangrove forest (CGM) is located downstream of Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC), situated between an estuarine system of Dong Nai - Sai Gon river and a part of Vam Co river. The CGM is the largest restored mangrove forest in Vietnam and the UNESCO’s Mangrove Biosphere Reserve. The CGM has been gradually facing to numeric challenges of global climate change, environmental degradation and socio-economic development for the last decades. To evaluate sediment quality in the CGM, we collected 13 cores to analyze for sediment grain size, organic matter content, and trace element concentration of Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, Zn. Results showed that trace element concentrations ranged from uncontaminated (Cd, Cu, and Zn) to very minor contaminated (Cr, Ni, and Pb). The concentrations were gradually influenced by suspended particle size and the mangrove plants.ReferencesAnh M.T., Chi D.H., Vinh N.N., Loan T.T., Triet L.M., Slootenb K.B.-V., Tarradellas J., 2003. Abstract:
This study focuses on the effectiveness of schema theories to improve the ability of classical Chinese reading comprehension of Hong Kong secondary three students. A classical Chinese reading course is therefore setup to demonstrate the Chinese cultural schema (hereinafter referred to as “the course”). The result will be discussed below. Quasi-experimental research method is used in this study. Students are divided into two groups: experimental group and control group. They are compared in pre-test and post-test to evaluate the effectiveness of the course. In addition, individual interviews and questionnaires are conducted both before and after the course of Chinese cultural schema to experimental group in order to learn more their opinions in Chinese culture, reading classical Chinese and the course. It is shown that both “basic reading comprehension ability” (“understanding of basic / surface meaning”) and “advanced reading comprehension ability” (“understanding of implicit meaning”) are improved, in which “advanced reading comprehension ability” is ameliorated particularly. For the ability of “constructing new knowledge and personal views”, however, the improvement is not outstanding enough. It is also found that students are more interested in Chinese culture and reading classical Chinese after the course. The result of Chinese cultural schema takes time to reflect. Teachers are encouraged to help students by revision and link up to previous schemas. Once students’ knowledge is reinforced, there will be a fundamental change in their way of thinking. It enhances the course’s effectiveness and makes it more long-lasting.
