Abstract:
Artist Statement My art is about seeking answers to personal conflicts while telling a story of a chaotic journey. I reflect on everyday moments and my thoughts as I discover ways to make sense of situations and life. I do this by creating textural, vibrantly colored, and gestural surfaces that emulate the powerful waters of the seas. I want to reveal an emotionally driven and process-oriented experience to the viewer. While creating, I do not maintain full control of the media and let the process become part of the work. I aggressively layer thick paint, glass, and mixed media. I spontaneously apply spirals and swirls of vibrant color that undulate and rotate like waves of an ocean. The spirals and swirls are a recurring motif in my work. These forms are ancient symbols of evolution, growth, and change and reflect the examination of my life. The colors and marks represent the turbulent and constant chaos of life.

Abstract:
In this essay I aim to examine how camp could be used as a method in the reading of camp as a theory. This will be followed by an analysis of how The Watermelon Woman (Cheryl Dunye, 1996) could be seen as an expression of camp. I am intending to do so by using camp as a method combined with queer phenomenology and theory about social abjection. By having a phenomenological base I hope to show how camp is contextual - and how its resistance is fluid. In my analysis I will look closer at the relationship between Dunye, the director, Cheryl, the protagonist - played by Dunye, and Fae - the actress who has been lost in the archives. Together, they show how camp becomes a method in the film itself, as a film, as well as a film within the film. Camp will be my method in the reading of The Watermelon Woman, claiming that the film as well uses camp as a method - both as an aesthetic expressions and as a (re)writer of history.

Abstract:
The main purpose of this thesis is to discuss what exile writing is and who can be seen as an exile writer. If the word “exile” is related to forced dislocation, like Paul Tabori and Sopia A. McClennen describes it, who can be viewed as an exile writer? Is Anders Olsson’s definition of an exile writer acceptable or not? Could the The Escape, a future story about exiled Northern Europeans in Myanmar, be classified as exile literature? Another purpose with this text is to describe how a story about exile can be made realistic and tangible to a reader who has not experienced exile. How can the exile experience be shown in a text? The third major aim with this thesis is to discuss how an ethnographic study differs from a fictive novel about another culture. Is an academic text more close to reality than fiction and what is reality anyway? Is it possible to make a mix of an academic study and a fictive novel?

Abstract:
In this thesis we mix the rational approximation procedure, which is a time approximation with approximation in the sense of Kato, which is a space approximation for neutron transport equation. We apply this procedure for explicit and implicit Euler, Crank-Nicolson and Predictor-Corrector schemes which have the rate 1,2 and 3 in the sense of rational approximation. By using Cherno's Theorem, we prove the convergence and we construct also the numerical illustration for justifying the above rate of convergence. In the last chapter, we give some generalization of Schauder and Krasnoselskii fixed point theorems in Dunford-Pettis Frechet spaces and which based on the notion of weakly compactness and U-equicontraction

Rankinen, K. (Karoliina). "Under the cherry trees:the symbolism of cherry blossoms during hanami in Japan." Master's thesis, University of Oulu, 2018. http://urn.fi/URN:NBN:fi:oulu-201806142565.

Full text
Abstract:
Cherry blossom as a symbol has had a central role in Japanese culture long before the written time. Due to its long history, cherry blossoms’ symbolism is multilayered and -vocal. In this thesis, I study cherry blossom’s symbolism through hanami ritual in todays Japan. As there has been hardly any scientific studies regarding the cherry blossoms in English, aside from Emiko Ohnuki-Tierney (2002), the research material is largely based on Japanese studies and my own material. The research material has been collected using ethnographic fieldwork’s methods by conducting semi-structured interviews in Japanese and participant observation. In theory part I’ve used many classics, including Clifford Geertz (1973), Victor Turner (1967) and Arnold van Gennep (1960). In cherry blossoms’ symbolism main categories center around the terms “time” and “place”, the flowers symbolizing changes and identity. Cherry trees are native trees, which is why they’re strongly connected to Japanese identity, although not as strongly as in the past. At the areas known for their blossoms, like Hirosaki and Himeji, cherry blossoms are strongly part of the local identity, which is used for tourism. Cherry blossom’s symbolism is very complex, often even contradictory, symbolizing things like beginning and end, life and death, joy and sorrow. The most important quality that cherry blossom has is its ability to woke strong, complex feelings in people. After all, Japanese culture and language are very emotion-based, and many terms connected to feelings don’t even have straight equivalent term in other languages. First and foremost, cherry blossoms are the sign of spring, similar to autumn leaves. Therefore, their blooming marks the end of season, winter, and the beginning of new one, spring. And as spring has traditionally been the beginning of new year in Japan, cherry blossoms also mark the beginning of new year and the end of old one. As this is an annual phenomenon, every Japanese has a large amount of different memories connected to the blossoms, such as beginning of school or work, or meeting new people. For this reason, cherry blossoms symbolize so many beginnings and endings. The blooming time of cherry blossoms is short. The all blossoms bloom gloriously at the same time for a week or two, and then they scatter to the ground, all at once. As such, cherry blossoms remind Japanese of the evanescence of life, how nothing is permanent. Therefore, according to Japanese philosophy, people should take an example of this and live their lives fully and diligently accept their fate when it comes. Hanami, meaning cherry blossom viewing, is thousands of years old Japanese spring event, where people gather under the cherry blossoms to celebrate the flowers’ blooming and the coming of spring. Spring is also the time when different groups take new members in. For example, new employees start working in their companies at spring and hanami acts as an event where the new employees become full-fledged members of the group, with all responsibilities and rights of the group. Being part of the group is important in Japan. As the appearance of cherry blossoms mark arrival of many changes, hanami also acts as a liminal period that softens both transition and stress
Kirsikankukkien kukkimisaika on erittäin lyhyt. Hanami, eli kirsikankukkien katselu, on tuhansia vuosia jatkunut japanilainen vuosittainen kevään tapahtuma, jossa ihmiset kerääntyvät kirsikankukkien alle juhlimaan niiden puhkeamista kukkaan sekä kevään saapumista. Kevät on myös aika, jolloin erilaiset ryhmät ottavat joukkoonsa uusia jäseniä. Esimerkiksi yhtiöiden rekrytoimat uudet työntekijät aloittavat työnsä keväällä ja hanami toimii tällöin tilaisuutena, jossa uusista työntekijöistä tulee ryhmän täysvaltaisia jäseniä vastuineen ja oikeuksineen. Ryhmään kuuluminen on Japanissa erittäin tärkeää. Koska kirsikankukkien ilmestyminen merkitsee monenlaisten muutosten saapumisesta, hanamin tarkoituksena on toimia liminaalitilana, joka pehmentää muutoksista johtuvaa siirtymää ja stressiä

Abstract

Purpose/Aim: The purpose of this paper was to identify the communication process at the company Cherry casino and see what opinions the employees had about it. Moreover, an evaluation of the used strategies was done and an analysis about what perhaps could be done to improve the attitude, communication and in the end the result for the company.

Material/Method: The empirical material was gathered through qualitative interviews and theory application.

Main results: The transmission of information regarding the regular work related information works just fine and the channels used are well chosen. But more large-scale information that deals with the company’s plans, strategies and targets is not handled in the right way. Neither is the respond. Many express a lack of dialogue. Therefore my main conclusions is to develop a more friendly touch within the company, create a dialogue and let people at the bottom of the hierarchy know what is happening. The best way to do this is through the Intranet and the increase of positive feedback.

Developmental orthopaedic diseases (DOD), including osteochondrosis, cause significant loss to the horse industry. Intensive feeding and fast development could be implicated. Foals were fed balanced nutrient allowances in order to achieve either a moderate (n=19) or a maximal (n=20) growth from birth to 1 year of age. The study of joint, bone and plasma parameters was carried out. Incidence of DOD was not statistically different between groups. Height at withers, of either genetic or nutritional origin, was associated with DOD. Affected horses had lower epiphyseal bone porosity and plasma IGF-1 concentrations, and increased leptinemia. Biomarkers of bone and cartilage turnover were reliable and relevant to early prediction of DOD. Systemic and local factors may be implicated in the intricate DOD process. A high but balanced level of nutrient intake would not appear to be per se a factor of risk for disease

Abstract:
Cheval mémoire (a piano drama) is a thirty-minute musical composition scored for solo piano, electronics, and six antique radios. In the broadest sense, the piece metaphorically dramatizes the processes of memory: how events, experiences, and information either transform into memories or forever vanish. To this end, two narrative elements push the action forward: a poetic text, which features a young woman recollecting the memory of her mother's departure; and a visual metaphor in which the piano, the pianist, the antique radios, and the audience symbolize the inside of a human head. The piece then alternates between sections where the pianist musically reacts to the poetic text heard from speakers surrounding the audience, and sections where the pianist performs various dramatic actions around the piano, including moving the radios from on top of the instrument to the stage floor. The sum of these actions symbolizes the creation and consolidation of memories. The composition's musical materials stem primarily from computer-assisted processes, including spectral analyses and various graphical derivations, applied to a series of recorded interviews on the topic of radio, which contrast with the poetic text. On a technical level, the piece explores the idea of live loudspeaker repositioning (i.e., physically moving speakers during a performance) to modify the perceived dimension of a sound source on stage; and also examines how synthesized piano resonance combined with other synthesized sounds can expand the registral and timbral possibilities of the live piano.

Abstract:
Human history reveals the centennial importance of the horse and the thesis has for object to verify the expression in law, by determination of the legal status of the horse. In accordance with the traditional legal classifications, the horse is first thing and movable. But the analysis of the legal regime of the horse reveals that its nature is admitted by the law and this evolution is determined by the consecration of its movement autonomy and his sensitivity. First a thing, the horse becomes a living thing. However, admitted as soon as, the living nature of the horse is challenged by the law in order to limit the linked legal effects, notably in the responsibility law. In contradictory appearance, this legal construction is yet justified by the man's superior interest. This man and horse consideration in law affirms the irreducibility of their qualification, to be legal for one, and a living thing for the other. Their assimilation would not be juridically considered whatever are the autonomy of movement and the sensitivity of the second. Distinct of the legal beings but not reduced to simple thing, the horse affirms itself in law like a living thing

While there is abundant evidence to suggest that invasive freshwater crayfish are detrimental to native species, the nature and degree of impact on marron populations by exotic yabbies remains unclear. Researchers have hypothesized that invasive species make faster and more appropriate use of information about their environment than native species. This greater behavioural plasticity can result in displacement of indigenous species, successful colonisation by invaders, and subsequent disturbance to natural ecosystems and representative biodiversity.
The research presented in this thesis examines the behavioural responses of an indigenous crayfish (C. tenuimanus) and an invasive crayfish (C. albidus) to waterborne odours derived from food, alarm sources and finfish predators. This study was undertaken to assist in the understanding of predatory and competitive interactions between indigenous and non-indigenous crayfish and fish predators, with particular relevance to Western Australia. Predation and competition are major forces influencing community structure in ecosystems; therefore knowledge of competitive and predatory interactions will be of benefit when considering future translocation policies.
Behavioural trials were conducted in two culture systems (54 L aquaria and a 70,000 L mesocosm), where marron and yabbies were exposed to a range of water-borne odours from finfish predators (silver perch and Murray cod), with and without competition from conspecific and heterospecific crayfish. A number of variables likely to influence crayfish behaviour were investigated: strength of chemical odour; crayfish size, gender, diurnal and nocturnal activity patterns; predator size; prior-residence; suitable habitat/shelter; and feed availability.
A key innovation in this research was the high replication in the aquarium-based observation trials using a Latin Cube design, which resulted in greater statistical strength and lower variability. More importantly, this research deviated from the tradition of exclusively using the ‘individual crayfish’ approach for odour-detection experiments and tested these results in a 70,000 L communal observation tank. This was an important development in crayfish behavioural experimentation, particularly as several key findings from the individual crayfish approach were confirmed in a multi-species environment.
Results from this study supported the hypothesis that invasive crayfish species make more appropriate use of a wider range of information about their environment than native crayfish species. Yabbies were found to possess behavioural characteristics not present in marron, such as clearer behavioural modifications to food and heterospecific odour, and cautionary behaviour in the presence of odour from a finfish predator. During simulated daylight conditions, marron displayed behaviours conducive to predation that were not present in yabbies, including less time spent in shelter and more time spent in locomotory activity. However, during specialised night-time observational studies developed during this research, these differences were not evident. This would not seem to be an unusual result, given that crayfish naturally forage at night and become more active; however, it may have important implications for future behavioural studies of crayfish, indicating a bias associated with day-time approaches. Crayfish size also played a role in behavioural modifications to water-borne odours. Larger marron displayed clearer changes in behaviour and were more responsive to heterospecific alarm odour than juveniles. Furthermore, juveniles of both species were more active than adults and sub-adults.
The expansion of the yabby population into Western Australian habitats occupied by marron has been facilitated through translocation for aquaculture, and biological characteristics of the species, some of which are typical of other invasive crayfish species including: tolerance of a variety of conditions; rapid growth; early sexual maturity; burrowing to escape drought and predation; capable of multiple spawns in a growth season; and aggressiveness. Another characteristic of invasive crayfish species also shared by yabbies, as supported by the results of this study, is high behavioural plasticity.
Although marron do not share the same level of behavioural plasticity found in yabbies, their larger body size increases their success in competitive interactions. The comparatively smaller body size of yabbies may be the major factor limiting their population expansion in the presence of marron, especially in water-bodies where shelter is a limited resource.
Marron are an important endemic species in Western Australia, but their conservation is threatened by competition and predation from exotic species. The research presented in this thesis indicates that invasive yabbies are more receptive to chemical stimuli and better equipped to respond to predation risk than marron. This information will be of benefit when considering future translocation policy in Western Australia and highlights the need for a cautious approach to species introductions.

Abstract:
This dissertation is concerned with various mathematical aspects of Topological Quantum Field Theories (TQFTs) known as Chern-Simons theories. Although this subject has its origins in theoretical physics, the treatment here is in terms of the axiomatic approach due to Segal and Atiyah. A key feature of the thesis is the notion of a 3-tier (axiomatic) TQFT. This involves assigning a category to a closed I-manifold and a functor to a 2-manifold with boundary which is viewed as a cobordism between I-manifolds. To a closed 2-manifold Σ the theory assigns a vector space HΣ , and to a 3-manifold M the theory assigns a numerical invariant (if M is closed), a vector in HδM (if M has closed boundary δM ) or a natural transformation of functors (if the boundary δM of M has a 1-dimensional boundary). After a brief introduction, we introduce in chapter 1 the definition of a TQFT and that of a 3-tier TQFT. We then describe the geometrical set-up for Chern-Simons Theory for a Lie group G and focus on the particular case of G = SU(2). Finally we describe quite concisely how it might fit into a 3-tier TQFT structure. Roughly the next half of the thesis treats the specific case of Chern-Simons theory for the circle group T. In chapter 2 we describe a number of interesting topological aspects of the theory. In chapter 3 we go on to show how the theory fits into 3-tier TQFT framework. In the next two chapters we begin to deal with Chern-Simons theories for G a non-compact group. In chapters 6 and 7 we deal with a rather more algebraic theory which is the abelian version of a theory which is meant to compute the Casson invariant for oriented homology 3-spheres. For this reason we call it the abelian Casson-type theory. From the physics viewpoint, it coincides with the Chern-Simons theory where G is a supergroup. This is rather difficult to motivate mathematically, so we adopt an algebraic-topological definition of the theory and show it satisfies the TQFT axioms. We then go on to show how it fits into the 3-tier TQFT structure. The novelty here is that the category assigned to a 1-manifold is not semisimple.

Abstract:
With a radiometric age of 396 ± 12 ma, the Rhynie Cherts, Grampian Region, Scotland, are the oldest unequivocal surface expression of an epithermal system in the world. Data is presented from 8 cored boreholes drilled within 100m of the Rhynie Cherts subcrop. The cherts are present in the upper part of the Lower Devonian basin infill which forms the Rhynie outlier. The basin is a half-graben structure, with a northeast/southwest trending western boundary, following the regional stress trend. In the area of the Rhynie Cherts, the western boundary is complicated by a series of cross faults. The eastern boundary is unconformable. The basin infill, in the area of Rhynie village, is a fining upwards sequence, produced locally from the newly formed Caledonide mountains. The basal Pre-Lava Sandstones Unit is an alluvial fan deposit. This is overlain by a series of basaltic andesite lavas with associated agglomerates and lapillistones. The Tuffaceous Sandstones Unit, containing both airfall and fluvially reworked tuffaceous material was deposited at the close of volcanic activity. The next unit in the series is the Shales with Thin Sandstones Unit, which contains the Rhynie and Windyfield Cherts. These two units of the post-lava sequence represent alluvial plain deposition, with evidence for sub-aerial exposure. The uppermost unit in the outlier is the Quarry Hill Sandstones unit, comprising fluvial channel sandstones. Hot spring activity occurred during the deposition of the Shales with Thin Sandstones Unit, resulting in the deposition of the Rhynie and Windyfield Cherts. A 35m cored borehole permits study of a vertical section through the chert bearing strata.

The Globalization has made it possible for countries to find their customers anywhere, Brazil being the fourth consumer market in the world cars, virtually all global manufacturers want to be present in this market. With the Chinese, holders of the title of biggest global automobiles producers, it wouldn’t be different. However, unlike the steady growth of its worldwide production, they saw their sales stagnate at low levels in Brazil in recent years. The aim of this study is to understand the evil of sales performance the Chery brand in Brazil, from the perspective of Sales Managers of used car agencies and former owners. To try to answer this question, we opted for an exploratory study, through a literature review and a qualitative research, with open in-depth interviews based on a pre-established script and a cut in the city of São Paulo – SP. It was also used an electronic media secondary research, which confirmed the information obtained in the field research. As shown in this job, all brands had a reduction in sales, however, Chineses brands have suffered major reductions as “national” brands. In the survey it was observed that three factors were decisive for the bad performance of Chineses brands and consequently the brand Chery as well. The first one was the increase of Tax on Industrialized Products (IPI), the second was the economic crisis that Brazil is undergoing and the third was the rejection of Chery cars. This rejection was due a lot of factors, added the negative experiences that consumers had with imported brands of vehicles that left the country, the image that Chineses products are copies and the hypothetical bias that Chineses products have low quality. Therefore, listening to the interviewees and through the comments on the Chery brand in electronic media, it can be deduced that only the economic crisis and tax increases not fully justify the poor sales performance of the Chery brand. This analysis, indicates that rejection factors to the Chery brand vehicles had a decisive participation in the significant drop in its sales in the period of 2010 to 2014.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This study aimed to identify factors, particularly behavioural, involved in the problems of infertility observed in the domestic horse. In the first part of this work, we examined the effect of some individual factors (age, reproduction status and sire of the mare and the bredding stallion) on mares’reproductive success. Results confirmed the effects of age, reproductive status and the stallion observed in other studies and showed for the first time an effect of the sire of the mare on its fertility. A preliminary study of breeding mares kept in barren paddocks with a high density revealed unusual behavioural repertoires and time-budgets compared to those observed in more natural conditions. In order to evaluate theses behavioural troubles and identify their origins, we proceeded to experimentation. The aim of the experiment was to test the effect of giving the animals the opportunity to forage, on their behaviour, welfare and reproduction performances. Results showed that increasing foraging opportunities influenced the behavioural repertoires and time budgets of the mares but also enhaced their fertility by increasing conception rates and reducing estrous problems. In a third part of this work, we studied the link between stereotypies, considered as poor welfare indicators, and mares’ reproductive success. Our results revealed for the first time, a lower reproductive success in mares that showed stereotypic behaviour

Abstract:

Our results reveal that using positive reinforcement facilitates learning and acceptance of more or less invasive procedures, and promotes a positive human-animal relationship, while negative reinforcement induces an increased emotionality. In the second part of our work, we questioned ourselves on the possibility to use social models. Our results suggest that these models can influence the observer’s interest in a given task. Lastly, we examined how horse behaviour can be affected during an interaction, by factors linked to the animal itself (laterality, experience), or to our own attitude (visual attention). Our results underline the importance to take such factors into account when we interact with animals. Overall, this study shows that the application of classical learning rules can bring a new light on animals’ training and education
