Abstract:
The benefits of Tai Chi and Wai Tan Kung exercises on cardiopulmonary endurance and body composition have become a controversial issue. The survey analytical computational study was performed to investigate the differences in cardiopulmonary endurance and body composition among elderly members of Tai Chi, Wai Tan Kung, and elderly sedentary. The study involved 10 elderly members of Tai Chi, 10 elderly members of Wai Tan Kung, and 10 elderly sedentary. The Astrand-Rhyming’s step test was conducted to measure the cardiopulmonary endurance. While the measurement of body composition (body fat percentage) was done using a skinfold caliper. The data were analyzed with an unpaired t-test(p<0.05). The results of the study indicated that cardiopulmonary endurance (VO2 max) and body composition (body fat percentage) of Tai Chi elderly members were the best of both Wai Tan Kung elderly members and of elderly sedentary; while cardiopulmonary endurance and body composition of Wai Tan Kung elderly members were better than those of elderly sedentary.

Abstract:
This article sheds light on the pervasive yet largely uncommented upon presence of geek culture and Orientalism in hip hop, revealing the constructed, performed, and mediated nature of racialized masculinity in popular culture. By observing a range of media artifacts but concentrating on RZA’s memoir The Tao of the Wu (2009), this article contends that geeky hip hop Orientalism performs a strategy of style codeswitching, wherein the combination of intellectualism and the fantasized East expand the repertoire of Black masculinity and fantastical worldmaking. Heavy in Orientalist themes that mirror the hyper intellectualism associated with geekiness, The Tao of the Wu evinces the strong bond between geek culture and early hip hop music. Specifically, this article focuses on RZA’s mental cultivation over physicality and his enchantment by children’s media culture (comics, anime, and kung fu cinema). Merging hip hop and geek culture, which conventionally appear to exist on opposite poles, results in new interracial paradigms of geek and hip hop representations. Hip hop geekiness largely detours from an otherwise presumed whiteness in routing itself along a storied legacy of African American Orientalism. In this way, geeky hip hop Orientalism contributes to more queered and quotidian versions of Afro Asian aesthetics, politics, and interracial fantasy worlds. A deep consideration of the bonds among hip hop, geekiness, and Orientalism helps to reimagine the embodiments and performances of racialized masculinity, which, though complex and limited, can gesture towards the freedoms promised in a more expansive spectrum of gender and sexual affinities and identities.

Abstract:
Abstract: The continuous growth of elderly people and the high standards of their quality of life, makes the physical activity an important element in the integral treatment of the age negative effects, in order to length the life expectancy and improve the quality of it. The Tai Chi and the Qigong are modalities of physical activity very suitable for this population group, due to their characteristics, to his low impact, not needing facilities, nor material or special equipment for their practice, being able to practice in outdoors spaces (squares, parks and gardens), which also entails to enjoy environment and the nature contact. All this makes an ideal practice for the encouragement and promotion of the physical activity in elderly people.

Abstract:
This article presents a qualitative study following a 6-month Taiji (T'ai Chi)/Qigong (Ch'i Kung) intervention for older adults. The researchers conducted in-depth interviews of eight selected participants who elected to continue practicing Taiji after the intervention ended, in order to explore their subjective experiences of Taiji's effects and their motivations for continuing to practice. We created a Layers Model to capture the significance and meaning of the multidimensionality of their reported experiences. Participants not only reported simple benefits along five dimensions of experience (physical, mental, emotional, social and spiritual) but also described complex multidimensional experiences. Overall findings indicate that participants derived a very wide variety of perceived benefits, the most meaningful being a felt sense of body-mind-spirit integration. Our results support the important role of qualitative studies in researching the effects of Taiji and Qigong.

Abstract:
Peer-assessment and video comment-sharing are effective learning strategies for students to receive feedback on their learning. Researchers have emphasized the need for well-designed peer involvement in order to improve students' abilities in the cognitive and affective domains. Although student perceptions of peer-assessment have been studied extensively in higher education, few studies have focused on the effects of the peer-assessment strategy on students' performance from the affective perspective, especially in Physical Education courses. Therefore, in this study, a peer-assessment mobile physical education approach is proposed for developing a mobile learning system for a Kung Fu Tai-Chi physical education course. To evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed approach, an experiment was conducted by assigning 42 college students to participate in this learning activity. The experimental results show that the proposed approach not only promoted the students' learning interest and motivation, but also improved their learning self-efficacy and socialization.

Abstract:
Aim. To examine the efficacy of a six-month Kung Fu (KF) program on physical fitness in overweight/obese adolescents.Methods. Subjects were randomly assigned to the KF or sham exercise (Tai Chi, TC) control group. Physical measurements in cardiovascular fitness and muscle fitness occurred at baseline and after 6 months of training thrice weekly.Results. Twenty subjects were recruited. One subject was lost to follow-up, although overall compliance to the training sessions was46.7±27.8%. At follow-up, the cohort improved in absolute upper (P=.002) and lower (P=.04) body strength, and upper body muscle endurance (P=.02), without group differences. KF training resulted in significantly greater improvements in submaximal cardiovascular fitness (P=.03), lower body muscle endurance (P=.28; significant 95% CI: 0.37–2.49), and upper body muscle velocity (P=.03) relative to TC training.Conclusions. This short-term KF program improved submaximal cardiovascular fitness, lower body muscle endurance, and muscle velocity, in overweight/obese adolescents with very low baseline fitness.

Abstract:
LANGUAGE NOTE | Document text in Chinese; abstract also in English. Purposes: 1) Elderly females engaging different exercise programs (walking, low impact aerobic, chi-kung) and sedentary elderly women were compared on self-esteem and functional fitness; 2) The predictability of the 6 functional fitness variables to self-esteem was also tested. Methods: 256 elderly females (55-75 years old) were selected from each of the 3-exercised group (walking, low-impact aerobic, and chi-kung class) and sedentary group respectively. Measuring instruments included Functional Fitness Test and Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (RSES). One-way ANOVA was utilized to compare the three exercised-group of subjects on the overall self-esteem score (Rosenberg, 1965), and the multiple regression analysis was utilized to determine whether the 6 functional fitness predictors add to a linear function of self-esteem. Results: ‘Flexibility' was found to be significant (p < .05) predictor of self-esteem. Self-esteem , ‘BMI', ‘FLEX', ‘BAL', and ‘AGIL' of the physically active elderly women were significantly (p<.05) better than the non-exercised women. Furthermore, Self-esteem , ‘BMI', ‘FLEX', ‘BAL', ‘MUSCU', and ‘AGIL' scores of the elderly women of low impact aerobic exercised-group was significantly higher than those of the walking and Chi-kung group. However, no significant differences (p>.05) were found among the three groups in the mean‘ CARDIO' scores. Conclusion: Elderly females engaging in low impact aerobic have higher self-esteem and better functional fitness. Furthermore, Flexibility is the most important predictor of self-esteem in elderly females.

Abstract:
The health of the middle-aged and elderly people is a major concern given the rapid aging population and rising costs of medical care. Low-impact exercise on a regular basis is ideal for maintaining the well-being of an aging population. Tai Chi Chuan (TCC) is the most well-known and most widely practiced form of low-impact martial arts therapy and has been shown to have positive health effects. A lesser-known form of martial arts therapy is Wai Tan Kung (WTK), which our previous study found to have positive health effects as well. The present study compares the effects of TCC and WTK on autonomic nervous system modulation and on hemodynamics in adults among non-exercising control (30), TCC practitioners (30) and WTK practitioners (30). Our study found that in a short-term, WTK and TCC exercises enhanced the vagal modulation, lowered the sympathetic modulation and lowered arterial blood pressures in the practitioners. It was also observed that the forced vital capacity of TCC practitioners was significantly higher than that of WTK practitioners before exercise. There were no significant differences in the percentage changes in HRV measures and hemodynamics between WTK and TCC practitioners 30 and 60 min after exercise, indicating that the effects of WTK and TCC were similar in magnitude. In conclusion, TCC and WTK are comparable to each other in terms of their effects on autonomic nervous system modulation and hemodynamics, thus suggesting that WTK can be just as beneficial as TCC as a form of low-impact exercise for elderly adults.

The purpose of this study is to compare the movements of Tai Chi masters and beginners’ movements through the analysis of joint angle and punching effect, and explore the influence of training years on the power generation of Tai Chi punches. Methods: There were 14 Chinese Chen-style Tai Chi subjects recruited for this study. They were divided into the master group (n = 7, age of 38.14 ± 10.42 years, height of 1.68 ± 0.06 m, weight of 71.33 ± 8.61 kg) and the beginner group (n = 7, age of 38.00 ± 11.94 years, height of 1.69 ± 0.07 m, weight of 70.14 ± 9.79 kg). The typical movement from Chen-style Tai Chi is called Yan Shou Hong Cui. All subjects were asked to perform the action three times, and the way of force was applied each time. The kinematic and kinetic characteristics of Tai Chi were analyzed by the VICON 3D motion analysis system (100 Hz) with 16 MX13 cameras, and the punch efficiency was measured by the Chinese Kung Fu Dummy (80,000 Hz). Results: The experimental results show that the shoulder, elbow, and hand movements of the master group are more precise and the force strength is more vigorous (master group: the peak angular velocity of the shoulder joint was −324.12 ± 50.88°/s, the angular velocity of the elbow joint was −112.83 ± 56.98°/s, and the hand angular velocity was −121.69 ± 49.55°/s; beginner group: shoulder angle velocity was −281.17 ± 30.56°/s, the elbow angle speed was −263.64 ± 68.63°/s, and the hand angle speed was −36.80 ± 12.53°/s). The rotation angle and rotation speed of the hip joint in the master group were significantly higher than those in the beginner group (as for the hip rotation angle, the master group was 64°, which was significantly higher than the beginner group’s 44°, and there was a significant difference (p = 0.019 < 0.05)). In terms of rotation speed, the peak value of the master group was 370.3 ± 94.8°/s, which was significantly faster than that of the beginner group at 210.4 ± 56.1°/s, and there was a very significant difference (p = 0.003 < 0.01). The master group’s punch effect acceleration (496.39 ± 256.52 m/s2) was significantly higher than that of the beginner group (396.90 ± 116.79 m/s2). Conclusion: People who practice Tai Chi for a long time differ from the beginners in terms of joint flexibility, punching posture, and the effect of application.

Abstract:
Abstract Introduction Sleep disturbance is a prevalent problem among HIV-infected persons. The recognition of comorbid sleep disorders in patients with HIV is currently hampered by limited knowledge of sleep-related symptoms, sleep architecture, and types of sleep disorders. We aimed to compare the differences in sleep-related symptoms and polysomnography-based sleep disorders between HIV-infected persons and controls. Methods The study included 170 men with a Pittsburgh sleep quality index (PSQI) greater than 5, composed of 44 HIV-infected men and 126 male controls who were frequency-matched by sex, age (-/+ 3.0 years) and BMI (-/+ 3.0 kg/m2). For all participants an overnight sleep study using a Somte V1 monitor was conducted. Differences in sleep-related symptoms and sleep disorders between HIV-infected patients and controls were examined using t-tests or Chi-square tests. Results HIV-infected persons with sleep disturbances more often had psychological disturbances (72.7% vs. 40.5%, p<0.001) and suspected rapid eye movement (REM) behavior disorder (RBD) (25.0% vs. 4.8%, p<0.01) than that of controls. The sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) in HIV-infected persons was less common than that in controls (56.8% vs. 87.3%, p<0.001). The mean percentage of REM sleep among HIV-infected patients was higher than that among the controls (20.6% vs. 16.6%, p<0.001). Enuresis was more common in HIV-infected persons than controls (40.9% vs. 22.2%, p=0.02). Conclusion Psychological disturbances and SDB can be the possible explanations of sleep disturbances in HIV-infected persons, in which suspected RBD is notable. Further studies are warranted to examine underlying factors of suspected RBD among HIV-infected persons with sleep disturbances. Abstract:
Interest and participation in competitive Martial Arts such as Taekwondo, Karate, Kung Fu, Aikido, and Tai Chi is growing in children, adolescent as well as in adults in the USA and worldwide. Competitive Martial Arts require daily training weeks and sometimes, months prior to the start of a competition or tournament. The training period could be for a few hours daily over a period of one to six months with one or two days for every one week for rest and recovery. The types and extents of injuries after competition depend upon the form of Martial Arts and the type of physical contact. They include muscle, joint, head and neck, groin, upper and lower extremities, and soft tissues. Some acute injuries can be taken care of at home and the injured may recover quickly. Some injuries may require hospitalization and even surgery; while others may take longer period to recover and require stoppage in training. The training involves daily exercises during which moderate levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) are produced. ROS activates a transcriptional factor Nrf2 (nuclear factor-erythroid 2-related factor 2) which enhances the levels of antioxidant enzymes; and thereby, reduces oxidative stress. Because of this observation, some investigators have suggested that supplementation with micronutrient and antioxidant compounds is not necessary for reducing injuries and improving the rate of healing from injury. Appropriate diet recommended for Martial Arts athletes are sufficient to reduce oxidative damage and protect against injuries that occur during Martial Arts competitions. The use of a single antioxidant in reducing oxidative stress has produced inconsistent results in reducing the markers of oxidative stress. The limitations of such an approach are briefly discussed. This review has proposed a mixture of micronutrients which may reduce oxidative stress and improve performance in Martial Arts competitions. In addition, some beneficial effects of Martial Arts are also described.

Abstract:
Terminal drought i.e. drought during grain-filling phase is the most devastating environmental stress to wheat production. In present study the effect of terminal drought on physiological traits and its influence on yield and yield components in two winter wheat varieties (Kuna and Karla) were investigated. Terminal drought stress was applied from the beginning of anthesis by installing mobile plastic roof above the crops. Leaf gas exchange parameters, chlorophyll content index (CCI), relative water content (RWC), and nitrogen (N) content were measured three times during grain-filling phase, at early milk maturity (EMM), late milk maturity (LMM), and at early wax maturity (EWM). Grain yield and 1000 grain weight were measured by harvesting of each plot at crop maturity. Terminal drought enhanced leaf senescence and caused reduction of RWC, CCI, net photosynthetic rate (A), stomatal conductance (gs), and transpiration rate (E) as well as, grain yield and all measured yield components. However, grain yield and grain weight per ear were less affected in Karla indicating enhanced tolerance to terminal drought compared to Kuna variety. Higher tolerance to terminal drought in Karla is based on stay-green strategy. Stay-green strategy in Karla was characterized by retention of CCI at early wax maturity, which contributed to higher E and lower intercellular CO2 concentration compared to Kuna under terminal drought. Stay-green strategy as trait that enhanced terminal drought tolerance in Karla should be used in breeding programs and utilized to ensure maximum economic yields under terminal drought conditions.
