Abstract:
Kitas specialus to laikotarpio Amerikos lietuviškų spaustuvių ir knygų leidybos jose darbas priklauso knygotyrininkei D. Gargasaitei („JAV lietuvių spaustuvės (iki 1904 m.)“ – Knygotyra, t. 9 (16), sąs., 1, 1983).

Abstract:
Saul Bellow, as a cerebral, analytical, and philosophical writer, unflinchingly describes the world and gives the readers tremendous thoughts about life and society. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1976 for his human understanding and subtle analysis of contemporary culture. In Mr. Sammler’s Planet, Bellow shows the readers a death-burdened, rotting, spoiled, sullied, exasperating, sinful earth. This insane world is full of droll mortality and morbid entertainments. The coexistence of rationality and bestiality in man is vividly displayed in this novel. In his Introduction to Ethical Literary Criticism, Professor Nie Zhenzhao formulated the theory of the Sphinx factor as composed of the human factor and the animal factor, and the combination of the two makes an integrated man. The animal factor in the novel is fully demonstrated in the black pickpocket’s bestiality, Mr. Sammler’s voyeurism, the Holocaust, killings and thefts. However, the human factor is not so salient as the animal factor in this novel. I argue that the tension between the two factors not only intensifies the conflicts but shows how the author perceives the world. Bellow shows a strong contempt for the world. A pessimistic and critical outlook is conveyed in Bellow’s understanding of cities, represented by Chicago and New York. Robbery, cheating, speculation, beauty, money and lust construct a corrupted panorama of industrial cities. This is one of the reasons why Bellow highlights the animal factor more than the human factor. He seeks to criticize the American city from different perspectives of city culture, including the corruption of the bureaucracy, vices in public transport, changes in the urban landscape, competition between the pursuit of art and the pursuit of money.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The current research focuses on the American museum as well as on an analysis of their audience. In these times of mutations in the field of cultural habits, what is the role of the museum as a link to, or even more, as a driving force of those changes? Museums are no longer identified by the diversity of their collections but by the diversity of their audiences. In considering the French national speech concerning the failure of our cultural democratization system, it would be interesting to identify which strategies have been established across the Atlantic to appeal the visitor and assure a variety of attendees, and determine whether the strategies are effective. To answer these questions, surveys were administered at the Art Institute of Chicago in 2009. Two questionnaires were developed with the objectives of determining the typology of visitors and the social representations associated with this institution. Through the space-time created by the museum experience, the surveys attempted to determine in which measures the museum has an impact on the museum practice of their visitors

Abstract:
This study used data from the homicides in Chicago 1965-1995 dataset (N=9,340) to examine the relationship between the use of certain types of weapons in criminal homicides by gender, race, age, victim-offender relationship, motive, location, and changes over time. Differential association and sex-role theory were utilized to argue why gender differences would occur in type of weapon used in a homicide. Subculture of violence theory was used to emphasize that the place where the homicide occurs, the relationship between the victim and offender, motive of the offender, and the remaining variables affects the type of weapon used to kill. Significant relationships were found for all bivariate analyses performed. The type of weapon used to kill differs most by sex of offender, resulting in a moderately strong association. The type of weapon used to kill differs least by age of offender and although statistically significant, the association between the two is very weak.

Data obtained through content analysis of articles about or concerning President Reagan in Newsweek, Time and U.S. News & World Report during two time periods indicated that no relationship existed between time and variance of news coverage given to Reagan. Three content analysis measures were used: comparison of favorable and unfavorable statements, amount of coverage and number of quoted words. The study is composed of four chapters: Chapter I introduces the study, Chapter II presents the data, Chapter III evaluates the data and Chapter IV summarizes and makes recommendations.

Abstract:
Abstract Narrative is introduced as a cultural practice and life form which contributes to creating the foundation of our lives as it helps us to interpret the world, through stories, in which we must be able to act. Borrowed from Ricœur (Time and narrative: The configuration of time in fictional narrative (Vol. 2, K. McLaughlin & D. Pellauer, Trans). Chicago, IL: The University of Chicago Press (1985) and The course of recognition (D. Pellauer, Trans). Cambridge, MA: Harvard University Press (2005).), the concepts of time and space are presented as the contexts and products of narrative. The functions of storytelling are discussed under the heading of “technologies of Self-construction” (inspired by Foucault, Technologies of the self. In L. H. Martin, H. Gutman, & P. H. Hutton (Eds.), Technologies of the self: A seminar with Michel Foucault (pp. 16–49). Amherst, MA: The University of Massachusetts Press (1988).), which provide orientation, self-understanding, and transgression. These need to be developed within the constraints of social norms—so the theory goes—and yet subjects still have some room to move within the process of adopting norms (Butler, Giving an account of oneself. New York, NY: Fordham University Press (2005).).

Abstract:
AbstractInteragency collaboration is increasingly prevalent in welfare contexts due to the current pressure for integrating different professional domains around desired effects on citizens’ life and well-being. In the context of prison service this is equally important, due to the complexity in the constellation of actors that come into contact with a citizen before, during and after imprisonment. Drawing on a combination of neo-institutional theory (DiMaggio & Powell in The New Institutionalism in Organizational Analysis. University of Chicago Press, Chicago, IL, 1991) and sensemaking theory (Weick in Sensemaking in Organizations. Sage, Thousand Oaks, CA, 1995), we investigate an example of how “the Norwegian import model” enables actors to make sense of their work in a way that enables a practice of “living with” contradictions. Based on empirical data produced as part of the COLAB project, this chapter analyses the interagency collaboration of staff and management in a Norwegian low-security prison where professionals target the inmates’ education, health care, sports & leisure, faith and social services. The chapter identifies some key local practices, which underpin the collaboration across sectors and professions. These three practices are narrative practices, practices related to tools and documents, and shared meetings.

Abstract:
This paper compares two methods for calculating boiler efficiency using test data obtained from the Boardman Coal Plant. The two test methods are ASME PTC 4’s Energy Balance Method as evaluated by Sargent & Lundy LLC, Chicago, IL, and the Input/Loss Method as evaluated by its owner, Exergetic System Inc., San Rafael, CA. The differences in methods are fundamental: varying in basic definitions of boiler efficiency and calculation methodology.

Abstract:
Although chemists, in general, are concerned with the art and science of constructing molecules and understanding their behavior, for a long time the idea that such molecules can be linked together by strong bonds to make infinite, extended structures were fraught with failure. The notion of using molecular building blocks to make such structures invariably led to chaotic, ill-defined materials and therefore not only defying the chemists’ need to exert their will on the design of matter but also preventing them from deciphering the atomic arrangement of such products. The field remained undeveloped for most of the twentieth century, and it was taken as an article of faith that linking molecules by strong bonds to make extended structures is a “waste of time” because “it doesn’t work.”
