This study investigated the effect of brown rice-vinegar-induced changes in pH on the physicochemical properties (ash, moisture, protein, fat, collagen, chondroitin sulfate, sugar, and mineral content, color, salinity, and pH) of chicken bone extract. The following treatments were employed: control (purified water, 62%; chicken bones, 30.47%; chicken feet, 6.88%; garlic, 0.58%; pH 7), T1 (purified water, 62%; chicken bones, 30.47%; chicken feet, 6.88%; garlic, 0.58%; organic brown rice vinegar, 0.01%; pH 6), T2 (purified water, 62%; chicken bones, 30.47%; chicken feet, 6.88%; garlic, 0.58%; or

ABSTRACT Background: Hydroxyapatite (HA) is a material with excellent bioactivity and chemical similarity to bone. It can be extracted from natural sources or fabricated synthetic sources. Objective: To synthesize HA from domestic chicken eggshells and to characterize it using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and cell viability. Materials and Methods: Domestic chicken eggshells (Indian breed “Aseel”) were used to synthesize HA through the chemical precipitation method. The processing was

Abstract Bone graft infections are serious complications in orthopaedics and the growing resistance to antibiotics is increasing the need for antibacterial strategies. The use of magnesium oxide (MgO) is an interesting alternative since it possesses broad-spectrum antibacterial activity. Additionally, magnesium ions also play a role in bone regeneration, which makes MgO more appealing than other metal oxides. Therefore, a bone substitute composed of hydroxyapatite and MgO (HAp/MgO) spherical granules was developed using different sintering heat-treatment cycles to optimize its features. Depend

With the increase in life expectancy and the significant incidence of lesions of the musculoskeletal system, both the public and private sectors seek improvements in their products and processes in order to contribute to the health of the population. Every year tons of chicken eggshell (CES) from domestic consumption are released in environment and the present work aims the production of a synthetic ceramic bone substitute using the eggshell as a source of calcium ions. According to the methodology, 5, 10, 15 and 20 mol% of iron ions were used and the characterization assays demonstrated the f

AbstractEach year, approximately million tons of waste is generated from eggshells disposed of in landfills. This waste is challenging to manage because of the odor and microbiological development. However, eggshells have potential applications as a solid byproduct. They can be modified and used in various industries such as metal, polymer and ceramic composites, in the production of biodiesel, heavy metal absorption from wastewater, and even as a biomaterial to substitute bone tissues. Furthermore, eggshells can be used as a cheap adsorbent for the treatment of contaminated waterways. They ar

The first time I read Hélène Cixous’s The Laugh of the Medusa I swooned. I wanted to write the whole thing out, large, and black, and pin it across an entire wall. I was 32 and vulnerable around polemic texts (I was always copying out quotes and sticking them to my walls, trying to hold onto meaning, unable to let the writing I read slip out and away). You must "write your self, your body must be heard" (Cixous 880), I read, as if for the hundredth time, even though it was the first.
