Abstract:
The objective of this study was to compare the nutrient status of full scavenging and semi-scavenging village chicken production systems. The semi-scavenging chickens were given broiler finisher mash between 14-24 weeks of age, whilst the full scavenging relied on natural foraging. The study also sought to compare the quality of meat from chickens from the two systems. After slaughtering the chickens, the crop contents were physically separated and analysed for chemical composition. Meat pH and colour were measured on the breast muscle of individual carcasses and a consumer sensory evaluation

Flavobacteria and pseudomonads are traditionally known to cause spoilage in food and food products (Forsythe, 2000, pp. 96–98 and 101–103). In the literature on meat spoilage, ‘flavobacteria’ is used as a generic name for yellowpigmented rods (Hendrie et al., 1969). Usually, pathogens such as Salmonella and Campylobacter are associated with poultry, but large numbers of other bacteria often associated with spoilage are found on poultry carcasses. These include many so-called flavobacteria that may originate from the poultry itself or from the abattoir environment and which are responsible for

Seed traits related to plant stand establishment were studied in chickpea during Rabi, 1997 at the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT), Patancheru, Hyderabad and on two farmers fields located at Yelimella village, Rangareddy Dist., A.P. Ten plots (lm x Im) were selected randomly in both the farmers fields. In farmer-1 field half of the plots were irrigated and no irrigation was applied in farmer2 field because it rained seven days after sowing. Soil moisture was determined at the time of sowing and after irrigationirainfall in order to relate dif

The potential applications of chickpea proteins (Cicer arietinum L. cv Kaniva) as food ingredients have been investigated and presented in three major parts of this thesis. The first part identified different extraction conditions and their effects on the extraction yield and characteristics of the isolated proteins. The second part defined the functional properties of these isolated proteins and relevant factors affecting their behaviour. The third part investigated the effects of chemical and enzymatic modifications on the composition, structural characteristics, functional and flow prope

Certain crop plants are susceptible to pathogens or unable to develop efficient microbial symbioses. These crops adversely impact soil biological quality with consequences on plant health and productivity of cropping systems. Chickpea is a rotational pulse crop with two types: kabuli and desi, and several cultivars. Cultivation of chickpea has inconsistent effects on soil microbial communities and subsequent wheat crops. I conducted field studies and used high throughput molecular analyses to explore the variations among chickpeas to identify cultivars developing fungal communities that are co

Several molecular chaperones are known to be involved in bacteria stress response. To investigate the role of chaperone ClpB in rhizobia stress tolerance as well as in the rhizobiaplant symbiosis process, the clpB gene from a chickpea microsymbiont, strain Mesorhizobium ciceri LMS-1, was identified and a knockout mutant was obtained. The ClpB knockout mutant was tested to several abiotic stresses, showing that it was unable to grow after a heat shock and it was more sensitive to acid shock than the wild-type strain. Especially, fertilizer is more important to fruit growth. This study was conducted on 6 year's old wax apple plants (Big-fruit cultivar) after forced flower. Chicken manure, plant growth regulators (PGR) and seaweed liquid fertilizer (SLF) were applied to study their effects on fruit quality. Results revealed that fruit quality (in terms of fruit weight, fruit length, fruit width, flesh thickness, firmness and sugar content) was improved after treate

Chickpea production in the short growing season of the Canadian Prairies is still a challenging task due to excessive and continuous vegetative growth which often results in severe yield and quality reduction. This study examined the effects of three plant growth retardants (PGR), Chlormequat Chloride (CCC), Prohexadione Calcium and Trinexapac Ethyl applied during flowering stage on vegetative growth, seed quality, yield and crop maturity of the Kabuli chickpea cultivar CDC Frontier. Field experiments were conducted at Brooks and Bow Island in southern Alberta in the 2010 and 2011 growing seas

Chickpea cropping system is largely rainfed and terminal drought is a major constraint to its productivity. Breeding for drought tolerance requires knowledge of the type and intensity of drought and the various traits and mechanisms employed by the plant to overcome the drought effects. The number of traits that are associated with terminal drought tolerance is overwhelmingly large and needs to be prioritized and ranked for their strength of contribution to drought adaptation and to incorporate in breeding programs. Therefore, the objectives of this study were to understand the relativ
