Abstract:
Melanin, the pigment found in the eyes and coats of vertebrates, is synthesised by two main cell types: melanocytes and retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) cells. These two cell populations. which arise from distinct embryological origins, differ with respect to the rate at which they produce melanin and the ways in which they respond to melanogenic stimuli. Tyrosinase is the rate-limiting enzyme in the melanin synthesis pathway, and the regulation of tyrosinase gene expression in mammalian melanocytes has been extensively studied. In contrast, regulation oftyrosinase gene expression in RPE cells

Abstract:
It has been shown in many species that individuals exhibit consistent differences in behaviour over time and/or across situations. These differences in behaviour are called personality. One way to categorise personality types typically used for rodents, is along a proactive-reactive gradient, which describes how individuals cope with stressful challenges. Proactive individuals pay less attention to their environment, form routines easily and take longer to adapt when routines are broken compared to reactive individuals. Avian species have to date rarely been described along this gradient, thus

Abstract:
The aim of this study was to identify common messenger molecules used in both the immune and the neuroendocrine systems in birds, and to shed light on a cell type within the bursa of Fabricius that has historically been postulated as a potential neuroendocrine-immune link, the bursal secretory dendritic-like cells (BSDC). An immunocytochemical approach was used to identify neuroendocrine cell populations in the thymus, pituitary and bursa of Fabricius in the chicken. Molecular confirmation of the neuroendocrine cell marker, chromogranin A (CgA) in the thymus tissue of the chicken was reported.

Variant GnRH ligand and receptor subtypes have been identified in a number of non-mammalian vertebrate species, however research into avian species GnRH systems is lacking. Two isoforms of GnRH are present in the domestic chicken, the evolutionarily conserved GnRH-II and diverged cGnRH-I. The expression of two GnRH ligands parallels the expression of two chicken GnRH receptor subtypes; cGnRH-R-I and the novel cGnRH-R-III. The occurrence of two isoforms of the receptor in the chicken raises questions about their specific biological functions and interactions with the two ligands. Differential r
