Abstract:
Video-supported technology is employed by many families to support familial relationships between grandchildren and grandparents. Employing an ethnomethodological and conversation analytic approach, this paper investigates the interactions of one family during a Skype session. The Skype call examined has special significance as the family members (mother and grandson) are calling to celebrate Grandpa's birthday. Detailed examination of video-recorded intergenerational interactions shows how the interactions are managed. Analysis highlights the important role of the mother in managing the progression of the call and her child's interaction with the grandfather. The interactional resources employed by the grandfather to initiate and sustain interaction with his grandson are examined. Also explicated is the interactional competence of a very young child in deploying interactional resources that orient to the affordances of technology. The findings contribute to understandings about how intergenerational interactions occur.

Abstract:
Abstract The Covid-19 pandemic has made age more salient, and the media has included numerous ageist messages (Bronwen, 2020), included messages aimed at children (e.g., “stay home to protect grandma and grandpa!”). When the pandemic reached Germany in March, we halted data collection on a project assessing ageism in children ages 4 to 8. In July, the situation had improved and testing resumed following hygiene protocols. We report findings from a simulated-behavioral measure where 45 children were asked to plan a party. One task involved asking the children to place pictures of ten party guests, plus themselves, around two party tables. We then assessed how many seats away the younger and older adult guests were placed, on average, from the child (i.e., social distance). Although, we anticipated that the pandemic might lead children to further distance themselves from older adults, our results, thus far, indicate similarity between pre- and post-pandemic preferences. At both occasions older adult guests were seated, on average, one seat further away from the child then younger adult guests. The guest chosen to sit closest to the child was younger on 88% of occasions, whereas the guest chosen to sit farthest away from the child was older on 64% of occasions. Preference for younger adults was confirmed in a second task where children selected teammates for a game. On average, children’s teams consisted of 70% younger guests versus 30% older guests. Findings indicate a social preference for younger, versus older, adults in children irrespective of the pandemic.

Abstract:
This study examined the role of the “animated eBook advantage” in child bilingual’s Mandarin learning, which has tended to be examined in the acquisition of Germanic languages. With this aim, 102 4- to 5-year-old preschoolers in Singapore were assigned to one of four conditions: (a) animated eBooks (+sound+motion), (b) static eBooks with sound, (c) static eBooks only, and (d) a control condition where children played a math game on an iPad. Three stories were displayed to children each for four times over 2 weeks, while visual attention was traced with an eye tracker. Children’s target words and story comprehension were assessed for the effects of the intervention conditions. The results revealed that children in the animated condition outperform their counterparts in total fixation duration, target word production, and storytelling of one of the stories (Cycling With Grandpa). There were no consistent differences between the two static conditions. Our results indicate the importance of motion in animated eBook design, in line with previous findings.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This pilot study estimates the effects of family structure on age of diagnosis, with the goal of identifying factors that may accelerate or delay diagnosis. We conducted an online survey with 477 parents of children with autism. In addition, we carried out novel, follow-up surveys of 196 “friends and family,” who were referred by parents. Family structure and frequency of interactions with family members have significant effects on age of diagnosis (p < 0.05). In all, 25% of parents report that other individuals indicated that their child might have a serious condition before they themselves suspected it. Moreover, around 50% of friends and family report that they suspected that the child had a serious condition before they were aware that either parent was concerned, suggesting that the clues were there to see, especially for experienced viewers. While half of those individuals shared their concerns with the parents, the other half either did not raise any concern (23%) or just “hinted” at their concern (27%). Among children with siblings, children with an older sibling are diagnosed approximately 10 months earlier (p < 0.01) than those without, and children with no siblings were diagnosed 6–8 months earlier than children with siblings (p < 0.01). Interestingly, frequent interactions with grandparents, especially grandmothers, significantly lowered the age of diagnosis by as much as 5 months (p < 0.05). While this pilot study requires replication, the results identify potential causes for accelerated or delayed diagnosis, which if better understood, could ultimately improve age of diagnosis and treatment, and hence outcomes.

Abstract:
AbstractAround 894/1488-89, a legal opinion on the case of a child living in the Naṣrid Kingdom of Granada, who came under the double threat of captivity and forced conversion to Christianity, was demanded by its father from jurists in Tlemcen. The text of this case is presented here and analysed from two points of view: the historical context of Muslim captives in Christian Spain, and the legal theory applied in the North African answer to the question posed by the Andalusi father. In the historical part of the article, cases of Andalusi Muslim captives (from the 6th/12th century to the 9th/15th century) are examined. Special attention is given to the possible ways used to put an end to captivity: ransoms and those who paid for them, bequests and pious fundations, etc., as well as tales of escape from Christians. Finally, the Muslim religious view of captivity is considered. In the second part, the case posed to the North African jurists is reviewed in detail. The two responses given by Ibn Zakarīyāʾ (d. 899/1493) and al-Sanūsī (d. 895/1490) both agree that the child could be separated from its mother and removed to a safe country. The motives given by both jurists to justify their opinions differ, but they follow the Mālikite school of law and reflect the historical and social developments of their time.

Abstract:
AbstractIn the last 25 years, materials from some human sacrifices that the Inkas carried out on high mountains (e.g., Aconcagua and Llullaillaco) have been thoroughly analyzed and adequately interpreted. Remains from immolations that took place in other contexts, however, which tend to be poorly preserved and incompletely studied, are not as well understood. In this article, I begin to remedy this imbalance in our knowledge by discussing the sacrifice from Salinas Grandes, which is a salt flat situated in northwestern Argentina. I describe the body of the victim—who was very likely a qhapaq hucha, a specially chosen child—and his clothing, accouterments, and hairstyle. I offer hypotheses on where he came from and on the reasons behind his ritual dispatch. I demonstrate how the different items that were buried with him all contributed to the meaning of his immolation. I also show how the lords of Cuzco may have employed the sacrifice to tie the region where the salt flat is located to the empire.

Abstract:
This research is entitled An Analysis of Ten Symbol of Grandma's Death As Reflected In The Edward Albee Sandbox. Where in the short story the 85-year-old grandmother who had been left by her husband and after the death of her husband the grandmother fought alone to support her child `namely mommys. But the child that grandmother hoped didn't care about him. Mommy treats grandma very inhumanely. He put my grandmother under the kitchen and only had a thin blanket and used potluck utensils. Then mommy took grandma to a place and put her in a sandbox where I interpreted this as the last time for grandmother's care and that was very tragic, like waiting for grandmother to die so they could live in peace. They did not care about mommy until mommypun died. This research aims to : (1) To explain the reader understand the extrinsic elements of The Sandbox drama. (2) To explain the reader understand and be able to describe what symbols are used from the drama The Sandbox. (3) To analyze the absurd symbols of The Sandbox drama. This study uses the theory of Roland Barthes who put forward a sign or symbol and a little supporting theory from Saussasure. The method used in this research is descriptive analysis method and qualitative method, which is describing the collected data and then compiled it by analyzing a semiotic drama script which can be seen from its extrinsic elements that have absurd symbols. Based on the results of this analysis it can be said that in this analysis the writer found ten absurd symbols contained in the sandbox drama. From the results of this analysis there is also a picture of the theme raised for this drama is about the emptiness, emptiness, and loneliness of a person in which we as humans need love and affection from other humans.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
Here we report on the first cultivated chile (Capsicum annuum) from the prehispanic United States Southwest and far northwest Mexico. A carbonized seed was recovered from a site near Casas Grandes, northwestern Chihuahua dating to the Medio period, A.D. 1200–1450. We then discuss the role of chile among prehispanic indigenous communities in the region and its transformation to a seemingly high profile foodstuff after Spanish contact. We suggest that the context of prehispanic crop introductions was far different from postcontact introductions and that this is central for understanding the changing use of chile in the region.

This article aimed to analyze, through a qualitative study (i.e., semi-structured interview), the opinions and knowledge of fourth-year future teachers at a Spanish public university (University of Granada) regarding training and the need for first aid (FA) at school. With a sample of 70 subjects in their last year of training, our conclusion is that although they are aware of the importance of first aid for their professional development, there is no such training in their careers, and thus they have great difficulty understanding how to react to emergency situations on the job.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
ObjectiveThyroid hormones (THs) are crucial for the correct maturation of the CNS and the neurodevelopment of the child. We aimed to investigate the association of TSH and free thyroxine (FT4) levels with cognitive functioning in children from the INMA-Granada cohort studied during their follow-up at the age of 9–11 years.DesignWe evaluated 300 children from the original cohort, which comprised 668 eligible mother–son pairs recruited at birth from 2000 to 2002 in Granada (Spain).MethodsFT4 and TSH concentrations were measured, and cognitive development was assessed using neuropsychological tests (n=187). Children with chronic disease related to thyroid function and/or cognitive development were excluded.ResultsMedian TSH and FT4 levels were 3.1 μIU/ml and 1.2 ng/dl respectively. In multivariable regression analyses adjusted for maternal and child characteristics, children with TSH levels in the top tertile had worse verbal comprehension and immediate and long-term recall. Children with FT4 levels in the top tertile had better attention and lower impulsivity and were at a lower risk of scoring below the 20th percentile in intelligence quotient (OR=0.24; 95% CI=0.08–0.74; P=0.013) and in abstract reasoning ability (OR=0.28; 95% CI=0.09–0.88; P=0.029).ConclusionOur findings indicate that circulating THs and TSH may in the top tertile have an impact on cognitive functions; thus, higher TSH slightly but significantly increased the risk of a lower score in certain neuropsychological tests.
