Abstract:
AbstractThe purpose of this chapter is to present research results on pupils’ well-being and health when integrating regular education outside the classroom (i.e. udeskole) into teaching. We believe that this chapter may be of particular interest to government employees (consultants), municipalities, school principals and teachers, teacher trainers and educators seeking arguments for and against outdoor teaching and learning. The argument is based on both empirical studies of pupils’ well-being, mental and social health, and theoretical assumptions (mainly the so-called Self-Determination Theory). Three key questions will be the focal points of the chapter: Is udeskole a viable approach to strengthen pupils’ well-being, mental and social health? Does udeskole have a demonstrable impact on pupils’ well-being, mental and social health? Should education outside the classroom be a regular applied practice in schools? In schools in several western countries, but especially in Scandinavia, udeskole is a teaching method, which is increasingly used both for its learning and health potentials. In this chapter, we focus on the importance of udeskole, based on relevant results from the Danish TEACHOUT research study. Although Danish children generally thrive and have high levels of mental and social health, initiatives are still needed to promote an even more positive school experience for every child. Early prevention of psychosocial illness is on the political agenda and school is considered a major arena for initiatives aimed at promoting mental and social health. The results of the TEACHOUT study show that if teaching outside the classroom is made a regular component of the annual plan, it can be expected to have a positive impact on pupils’ social well-being and intrinsic school motivation. It is still too early to determine whether udeskole has a real effect on the formation of friendships in the classroom community. However, the TEACHOUT study shows a small but significant increase in the number of new in-class friendships. Based on the Self-Determination Theory, we provide an understanding of the reasons why udeskole can have a positive effect on pupil well-being, mental and social health.

Abstract:
In this chapter, I take up dilemmas that today’s parents face in rearing young children. Throughout this book, we have touched on myriad forces that make contemporary parenting highly challenging. These include one-sided, contradictory messages in the parenting-advice literature; career pressures that impinge on parent involvement in children’s lives; abysmally weak American child-care services to assist employed parents in their child-rearing roles; cultural violence and excessive materialism permeating children’s worlds; schools with less than optimal conditions for children’s learning; and impediments to granting children with deficits and disabilities social experiences that maximize their development. Contemporary parents do not just find child rearing more difficult; they feel more uncertainty than their predecessors about whether and how to intervene in their children’s activities and behavior. In the pages that follow, I draw on major themes of this book—the power of adult warmth, appropriate expectations, narrative conversation, make-believe play, and teaching in the “zone”—to show how Vygotsky’s sociocultural approach can serve as a guide for resolving a great many child-rearing concerns. This chapter answers twenty questions drawn from a survey of over four hundred parents of 2- to 8-year-olds living in a Midwestern city with a population of one hundred thousand. In that survey, I asked parents to list any questions about young children’s development and learning that interested or worried them. The questions I answer here address issues that appeared most often in parents’ responses. Each represents a concern that surfaced in three or more parental replies. I intend these answers to parents’ questions to reflect a way of thinking about child rearing, not a set of recipes for dealing with specific events. When parents are familiar with principles that are grounded in contemporary theory and research on children’s development, they can better deal with the quandaries generated by the changing home, school, and community contexts in which today’s children grow up. Although adverse cultural trends have complicated and threatened good child rearing, parents—as agents of change, buffers against stressful life circumstances, and gatekeepers of learning opportunities—can do much to protect, restore, and reshape children’s experiences.

Abstract:
While studies have indicated an association between socioeconomic status (SES) and neuroimaging measures, weaker SES effects are shown for Blacks than Whites. This is, in part, due to processes such as stratification, racism, minoritization, and othering of Black people in the United States. However, less is known about Latino youth. This study had two aims: First, to test the association between parental education and the right and left nucleus accumbens (NAcc) resting-state functional connectivity with the frontoparietal network (FPN) in children; and second, to investigate ethnic heterogeneity in this association. This cross-sectional study used data from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) study. We analyzed the resting-state functional connectivity data (rsFC) of 10,840 US preadolescents who were between 9 and 10 years old. The main outcomes were the NAcc resting-state functional connectivity with FPN separately calculated for right and left hemispheres. Parental education was our independent variable. Family structure, sex, and age were covariates. Furthermore, ethnicity (Latino vs. non-Latino) was regarded as the moderator. We used mixed-effects regression for data analysis with and without interaction terms between parental education and ethnicity. Most participants (n = 8690; 80.2%) were non-Latino and 2150 (19.8%) were Latino. Parental education was associated with higher right and left NAcc resting-state functional connectivity with FPN. Ethnicity showed statistically significant interactions with parental education, suggesting that the positive associations between parental education and right and left NAcc resting-state functional connectivity with FPN were different in non-Latino and Latino children. For right hemisphere, we found significantly stronger and for left hemisphere, we found significantly weaker association for Latino compared with non-Latino preadolescents. Preadolescents’ NAcc resting-state functional connectivity with FPN depends on the intersections of ethnicity, parental education, and laterality.

Abstract:
Notwithstanding the psychosocial support interventions by the government and its stakeholders in ‘orphans’ and ‘vulnerable’ children (OVC) care and support in Zimbabwe in the past two decades, the challenges faced by caregivers in coping with OVC has unabatedly escalated. Whilst many studies have been carried out in Zimbabwe about the challenges faced by OVC, little has been directly written about the traumatic and psychosocial challenges faced by the caregivers in coping with the escalating challenges of OVC in Zimbabwe. This phenomenological qualitative study examines the challenges faced by caregivers in coping with the OVC burden at the household level within the Gutu rural community of Zimbabwe. In-depth interviews were used to gather data about the perceptions and lived experiences of the 15 caregivers and 5 OVCs who were purposively sampled within the Gutu District of Zimbabwe. The findings reveal that despite the willingness of the caregivers to absorb the OVCs, the care and support at the household level is fraught with several socio-economic challenges whose scale and complexity often exceed the capacity of caregivers to effectively mitigate. The study, therefore, recommends multi-stakeholder interventions which are aimed at economic empowerment of the caregivers at the household level.

Psychology as a science investigates the most common mental health problems during childhood and adolescence, including anxiety disorders. When the child begins to doubt his abilities in a subject, anxiety can become a factor that prevents him from learning or reproducing the acquired knowledge. Sometimes this can be confused with a learning disorder when it comes to just anxiety. Left untreated, anxiety disorders can affect both students' ability to study and personal relationships.
