Childhood exanthemata are a group of conditions that are characterised by an eruptive rash, typically caused by an infection. Six classic childhood exanthemata were defined in the early 20th century causing high rates of morbidity and mortality. With improvements in hygiene and living standards, and the development of vaccines, they are now a rare occurrence. However, in recent years with declining vaccination rates, there is a reported increase in incidence of such infections. As such, it is important for GPs to be able to identify such conditions and manage them appropriately.

Abstract Bronchiolitis is an infection of the small airways of the lung and is a common reason for infant hospitalizations. The most common causative pathogen is the respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). Genetic factors are thought to influence the risk of bronchiolitis, and better knowledge of bronchiolitis genetics will likely help to elucidate the disease process. Severe bronchiolitis in childhood may predispose to asthma. Therefore, an effective treatment of bronchiolitis may affect the present-day as well as lifelong respiratory health. CMV infection is widespread throughout the world and the risk of transmission between people through body secretions is high. During pregnancy, not only primary infections but also non-primary infections can be transmitted transplacental to the baby. It can cause serious mortality and morbidity in the fetus/newborn and is the most important cause of neurosensory hearing loss. There are new treatment motivations for this disease, for which there is no vaccine to date. Although current guidelines do not routinely recommend universal treatment, targeted therapy is important during pregnancy.
