Abstract:
In this article, we consider recent research on three questions about people's memories for their early childhood: whether childhood amnesia is a real phenomenon, whether implicit memories survive when explicit memories do not, and why early episodic memories are sketchy. The research leads us to form three conclusions. First, we argue that childhood amnesia is a real phenomenon, as long as the term is defined clearly. Specifically, people are able to recall parts of their lives from the period between ages 2 and 5 years, but they recall less from that period than from other periods. Second, we conclude that implicit memories from early childhood may be evident even when explicit memories are not, a finding that suggests early experience may affect behavior in ways that people do not consciously recognize. Third, we argue that although young children are well known to be wonderfully efficient learners of semantic information, they have difficulty in either encoding or retrieving the interlinked aspects of events that lend them their autobiographical character. Although more evidence is needed, the relative lack of episodic memories of early childhood may be linked to maturation of prefrontal cortex.

Connell, Paul Marshall. "Perspectives on Childhood Consumption Memories." Diss., The University of Arizona, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/195534.

Abstract:
The armchair social scientist will notice that individuals frequently refer to consumption that occurred in childhood. Books, toys, movies, cartoon characters, and even favorite foods are just a few examples of these childhood consumption referents. In her now well-cited and classic study on 15 different consumer-brand relationships, Fournier (1998) identified individual's relationships with childhood consumption referents and called them childhood friendships. Nevertheless, there is a relative dearth of consumer research exploring effects of marketing that begin in childhood and extend into adulthood, what functions childhood friendships might serve, and what consequences there might be to these relationships. In my dissertation, I aim to contribute to the consumer psychology literature with two separate essays pertinent to childhood friendships. In the first essay, I explore the meaning of these relationships and the functions they serve in consumer identity throughout the life cycle. In the second essay, I examine effects of early childhood brand relationships on biased judgments and decision-making.

Abstract:
This thesis investigated the characteristics of childhood memories that remain accessible over the whole life span. On the assumption that one of the primary purposes of autobiographical memory is its adaptive function, it was hypothesised that, in order to fulfil this function, autobiographical memories must include an affective component. That is, each memory will consist of a record of an experienced event together with the accompanying emotion so as to mediate an appropriate behavioural response in similar future circumstances. For the same reason, it was also predicted that, as a person grows older, selected childhood memories will still retain their emotionality, vividness and personal importance. A detailed analysis of the nature of childhood memories was undertaken and evidence to support these hypotheses was sought in three separate studies. In Study 1, a structured interview was used and 109 people aged between 21 and 91 years were asked to free recall memories drawn from within three - year periods of childhood from birth to 18 years. Subjects' ratings were used to explore the characteristics of these memories and the effects of age encoding subject age and subject gender were systematically examined. In contrast with previous research, it was found that 83 % of subjects could recall memories from below three years of age. Uniformly high ratings of emotionality showed that the affective component, as predicted, was high across all encoding. ages and showed no decline with subject age. Ratings of clarity and realism were also unaffected by subject age. The incidence and vividness of sensory imagery increased with age of encoding, but, again, did not decline with subject age. Although most vivid memories involved imagery, 15%of subjects sometimes claimed to recall vividly without imaging. These findings suggest that the affective component may have been contributing to overall vividness. Study 2 using, cued recall, compared latency of response for emotion cued words and object cued words and also used ratings to examine the characteristics of the retrieved memories. Memories were retrieved Faster to object cues but these memories were still rated high in emotionality. Memories retrieved to emotion cues, although slower to access, were rated as more important, more emotional, more unusual and more frequently recalled. Cue type was therefore shown to be a powerful factor in determining accessibility, overriding other memory characteristics. Although in Studies 1 and 2 subjects selected their own memories, Study 3 tested the retention of details of early experience of school life as designated by the researcher. It was found that detailed memories could still be recalled even in old a`e and that the rate of forgetting declined steadily with age This evidence of persisting retention of early childhood experience is consistent with the view that such memories serve a functional role in that they are an integral part of the 3 individual's self history and developing self concept. The research provides a substantial body of data detailing, the topics recalled From different periods of childhood and the nature of the memories and charts the remarkable stability of these memories across the life span.

Abstract:
Although quite a few researchers have pointed to the significance of the childhood theme in Tsvetaeva’s work, no systematic analysis of her work has been done from this perspective. Nor have her childhood reminiscences been treated as a thematically consistent whole, but have rather been read as instances of the poet’s prose in general. The present study examines Marina Tsvetaeva’s memories of childhood in the context of her work and in the context of the cultural and political reality to which these reminiscences refer and in which they were written—i.e., Russia around the turn of the century and the Russian émigré world of 1930–1937. In the introductory investigation of the presence of the childhood theme in Tsvetaeva’s oeuvre, it is found that idealization of the naive, innocent state is a relatively constant feature and that the childhood memories can be read as a culmination of this set of motives. It is also stated that Tsvetaeva’s continuous striving in her poetry away from the world, out of time, is an integral part of the childhood thematics. This tendency is traced, in connection with the childhood theme, to the influence of writers of the late Russian Symbolist movement as well as to Boris Pasternak and Rainer Maria Rilke—all with roots in literary Romanticism. Childhood is moreover found to be something of a key theme that reveals fundamental differences in the relation to memory and language among the authors of Russian modernism. In Tsvetaeva' s case it is shown that her childhood memories contain the romantic essence of her aesthetics. The study also touches upon the symbolic and allegorical dimension of the texts—Tsvetaeva’s “otherspeak” in her prose. It is shown that the central scenes of these texts can be read as illustrations of an artistic and linguistic experience. In this regard the author’s narrative of childhood also appears to have been a suitable medium for articulating controversial aesthetic statements and taking a stand for an historical past and literary tradition that at the time seemed doomed to oblivion.

Abstract:
How can we curate a collection of childhood memories to highlight multiple and multilayered stories beyond the fixed thematic organisation of a traditional archive? How can we archive memories in ways that offer audiences an opportunity to make their own interpretations and create new connections across memory stories, while inviting them to share memories in return? How can an archive be reflexive of its own creation, growth, and transformation, continuously arranging and rearranging, adding and affirming, disrupting and challenging the memories kept there? These questions guided the creation of this book, challenging not only ways of archiving ‘data’ but also the idea of memory as witness to history and complicating interpretations of childhoods lived during the Cold War. This chapter introduces readers to the anarchive, an evolving assemblage of childhood memories, artworks, scholarly articles, pedagogical frameworks, and methodological interventions that came out of our project ‘Reconnect/Recollect: Crossing the Divides through Memories of Cold War Childhoods’. It explains connections between memory work, collective biography, childhood studies, and the Cold War, and it offers some suggestions for engaging with the anarchive, including multiple thematic, artistic, and affective threads that we have found interesting, insightful, or surprising. This chapter is an invitation to enter and explore the memory anarchive.

Abstract:
Abstract Complex posttraumatic stress disorder (cPTSD) has several detrimental consequences, including severe anxiety, emotional detachment, mood irregularities, and vivid flashbacks to trauma. In many cases, cPTSD can be linked back to adverse childhood experiences (ACEs). Treatments for cPTSD that involve psychedelic drugs are potentially beneficial, but unfortunately they are understudied in psychology labs due to their classification as a Schedule I substance. Thus, theoretical work is needed to explain potential mechanisms involved in treatment programs. In this new theoretical model, I clarify the mechanistic links between ACEs and cPTSD and then examine why psychedelic drugs may be an ideal therapeutic tool for the treatment of cPTSD. Toxic stress theory posits that exposure to extreme, frequent, and persistent ACEs without the presence of a supportive caretaker chronically activates the stress response system (Jones et al., 2021). Toxic stress results in dysregulation of the limbic-hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (LHPA) axis, elevating levels of catecholamines, cortisol, and proinflammatory cytokines (Thermo Fisher Scientific, n.d.). The toxic stress induced by ACEs causes cPTSD due to the persistent exposure to multiple adverse events leading to re-experience of the traumatic events, avoidance behaviors, and paranoia. Psychedelic drugs unlock repressed memories, engaging positively with negative self-concept and dysregulated emotions, which are both characteristic of the Disturbances of Self-Organization symptom cluster of cPTSD. Presentation of this theoretical model would allow for public recognition of the potential benefits of this treatment and further exploration into this topic. Abstract:
The instrumentarium of this research is based upon the achievements of interpretive anthropology by C. Geertz and includes a number of our developments implemented within the concept of ethicizing mythological consciousness (a special component of the interdisciplinary system of four concepts which is being developed by us). These developments include: a) eight fundamental principles of Jewish upbringing which are implicit principles of upbringing (view of life, behavior) according to the Decalogue and are based on the concept of man and the Universe represented in the Ten Commandments; b) an interpretive ethnological model “The Decalogue and Harmonizing Hermeneutic Maxims of Obligatoriness: An Aspect of Upbringing.” The narratives by Raisa Lvovna Gandelman, born in 1903 in Chisinau, serve as materials for the study. Raisa Lvovna’s childhood and youth memories about the way her mother was treating her when the girl was sick, Ruhele’s recollections of her father, a proposal of marriage made to her at the age of seventeen, etc., are analyzed. The revealed hermeneutic maxims are identified as ethnocultural specificity of shaping the epoch of “new humanism in the 21st century” (UNESCO).

Abstract:
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, many people haven’t returned to their hometowns for several years. It also makes people pay more attention to long-distance interaction. Online meeting platforms these days expand their function beyond just face-to-face meeting but also uses virtual space to make them more interactive. More and more platforms provide a proximity video chat. People can walk in and out of conversations in their avatars. That makes people feel natural and seamless in virtual space. As a place preserved the lifestyle of local people, we found the traditional market is a meaningful place that reminds people of their hometowns. Most people have the experience going to the market with their family in their childhood. Thus, this study focuses on the parent-child memory in the market. By collecting the information of people’s memories, making them into Gather town, it provides remote interactive experiences for parents and their overseas adolescent children uniquely. Memories-To-Gather is a Gather Town space that makes people to experience the traditional market. Not just visiting an online market, but to bring the memorable time to their mind. Offering the possible solution for recalling memorable moments is based on the scene transition in virtual place. By collecting and integrating the stories of the participants, we transform these stories into scenes. Guided by the map, participants complete the tasks and slowly unravel the story line. Memories-To-Gather is designed for people to remind those family times in the market with elements of play, experimentation, and collaboration in the digital environment. There are two main research questions for this study:1. What kinds of parent-child interactions in the market are meaningful and worth discussing?2. How does a remote interactive experience trigger people’s memory and emotion? To answer these questions, we started a series of interviews to collect people’s memories in the market with their family. Participants are prompted to share their memorable moments when they went to the market with family via describing and drawing. Through field research, we also entered the market, which allowed us to better understand place and atmosphere in reality of the market, then report it based on our experiences. At the end of the research, we invited five pairs of overseas students and their parents to take part in the Memories-To-Gather in Gather Town’s experience and conducted interviews after the experience. Based on the analysis of our interview, we got the following conclusions: Gather town is an user-friendly tool which is easier to operate and get started. The 2D pixel style has a retro style and makes people feel they are brought back to the past. Memories-To-Gather breaks the barriers of space and distance, the collaboration in the platform enhances long-distance interactions within family members. The local style in the scene, story development and character interaction remind them of the experience in their hometowns. It triggers memories for young people in these days and change the perspective of traditional market. Memories-To-Gather provides a place of peace of mind, it helps people find comfort in this era of uncertainty. In the future research, we’re expecting that remote interactive experience will be more widely used in education or other fields. After the study, we are looking forward to seeing traditional market as more than shopping, but a place where culture and memories are preserved for younger generation as well.

Abstract:
The article focuses on the analysis of the fair, which is a reflection of the image of society, its material and spiritual values. The market, which in the Middle Ages attributed to its role as a commercial market an arena of social, political and cultural life as well, becomes a significant space in the dramaturgy of some films. We will research, in particular, the role and functions of the fair in films inspired from Ion Creanga’s works, starting with Amintiri din copilărie/ Childhood Memories (1965) and Mama/Mother (1976) – both directed by Elisabeta Bostan, Povestea dragostei/The Love Story (1977) and Rămășagul/The Wager (1984) directed by Ion Popescu-Gopo and ending with the film Dănilă Prepeleac (1998) in the vision of Tudor Tătaru. The fair with its full spectrum of elements becomes a phenomenon specific to our Romanian space, which identifies with a mundi axis of the world. All the more so in the film, the fair is assigned determining functions in its dramaturgical structure: the drama of the plot is woven, which provokes the characters to new actions; an identity landscape of space and time is prefigured.

Abstract:
Ion Creangă’s personality challenged the filmmakers on both banks of the Prut to create films in which to bring the famous storyteller back to the big screen. And if the genre of fiction film allows itself an artistic approach, with deviations and directorial inventions, then the non-fiction film is based on the document, drawing the true nature of the writer. In this context, there are a series of films, which aim to follow various aspects of the writer’s life, such as: Creangă (1973, directed by Vlad Druc), Creangă si Junimea (1989, directed by Ioana Holban), Ion Creanga’s God (1996, directed by Grid Modorcea), Ion Creangă (1999, directed by Anatol Codru) and others. But even these films are largely influenced by the writer’s work oscillating between document and fiction. We will refer to the films Ion Creangă’s God and Ion Creangă and analyze them from the perspective of that amalgam of events taken from the masterpiece of the writer Childhood Memories that form a common body with the rich iconographic material (photos, books, documents, archive documents, etc.) and biographical data, which being incorporated into a whole, give a special charm to the life of the writer.

Abstract:
Moldovan cuisine is considered a chosen one considering many aspects of world cuisines. It is the result of synthesizing in time the tastes, ideas and gastronomic customs specifi c to our people. It is special due to the multitude of integrated values, mentioning in this respect the nutritional value, food safety, aesthetics, etc., including the cultural value focused on culinary customs and traditions, but also the attributed semantic ones. Th e value multitude is determined by the heritage marked by the interconnection of traditional gastronomic culture with that of other peoples, with whom our people have come into contact throughout historical evolution. Th e study carried out within the State Program 20.8009.0807.17 REVICULT, in order to revitalize the traditional gastronomy and the interaction with the housewives in the fi eld, allowed the capitalization of a traditional dish known as Chisalita, Chisăliţă a dessert from the sweet memories of childhood reminiscent of grandparents and the beautiful childhood, is prepared in summer from fresh fruits, and in winter from dried fruits. Previous studies show that Chisalita is over 1000 years-old, and meant sour. It is of great interest to prepare the Chiseliţa in diff erent areas of the Republic of Moldova. Th us, it was identifi ed the traditional technology of preparing Chisăliţa with sour cherries, thickened with pasat (ground millet seeds) (years ‘20—’50) in the northern area (v. Rudi, v. Sudarca, Plop, Donduseni district), Chisăliţa with corcodușe (wax cherries) thickened with stripes made of dough (v. Japca, v. Bursuc, v. Salcia, v. Sănătăuca, Floresti district ), in order to be more consistent and “satiating”. Aft er the ‘60s, Chisăliţa, according to the informants, becomes more diverse considering the ingredients used, It was made from diff erent fruits combined and slowly avoiding thickening with ingredients other than fruit, keeping the same viscous consistency, sometimes being sweetened with sugar. In this regard, we present Chisăliţa prepared in summer from apricots (Anenii Noi district) and in winter from dried apples and pears. Th e knowledge of the culinary heritage associated with this traditional dish allows the identifi cation of the traditions of yesteryear, the fi nding of their values, of the gastronomic diversity as elements of tourist attraction but also of the nutritious health of a people.

Abstract:
Lincoln Boyhood National Memorial celebrates the lives of the Lincoln family including the final resting place of Abraham’s mother, Nancy Hanks Lincoln. Lincoln’s childhood in Indiana was a formative time in the life our 16th president. When the Lincoln family arrived in Indiana, the property was covered in the oak-hickory forest type. They cleared land to create their homestead and farm. Later, designers of the memorial felt that it was important to restore woodlands to the site. The woodlands would help visitors visualize the challenges the Lincoln family faced in establishing and maintaining their homestead. Some stands of woodland may have remained, but significant restoration efforts included extensive tree planting. The Heartland Inventory and Monitoring Network began monitoring the woodland in 2011 with repeat visits every four years. These monitoring efforts provide a window into the composition and structure of the wood-lands. We measure both overstory trees and the ground flora within four permanently located plots. At these permanent plots, we record each species, foliar cover estimates of ground flora, diameter at breast height of midstory and overstory trees, and tree regeneration frequency (tree seedlings and saplings). The forest species composition was relatively consistent over the three monitoring events. Climatic conditions measured by the Palmer Drought Severity Index indicated mild to wet conditions over the monitoring record. Canopy closure continued to indicate a forest structure with a closed canopy. Large trees (>45 cm DBH) comprised the greatest amount of tree basal area. Sugar maple was observed to have the greatest basal area and density of the 23 tree species observed. The oaks characteristic of the early woodlands were present, but less dominant. Although one hickory species was present, it was in very low abundance. Of the 17 tree species recorded in the regeneration layer, three species were most abundant through time: sugar maple (Acer saccharum), red bud (Cercis canadensis), and ash (Fraxinus sp.). Ash recruitment seemed to increase over prior years and maple saplings transitioned to larger size classes. Ground flora diversity was similar through time, but alpha and gamma diversity were slightly greater in 2019. Percent cover by plant guild varied through time with native woody plants and forbs having the greatest abundance. Nonnative plants were also an important part of the ground flora composition. Common periwinkle (Vinca minor) and Japanese honeysuckle (Lonicera japonica) continued to be the most abundant nonnative species, but these two species were less abundant in 2019 than 2011. Unvegetated ground cover was high (mean = 95%) and increased by 17% since 2011. Bare ground increased from less than 1% in 2011 to 9% in 2019, but other ground cover elements were similar to prior years. In 2019, we quantified observer error by double sampling two plots within three of the monitoring sites. We found total pseudoturnover to be about 29% (i.e., 29% of the species records differed between observers due to observer error). This 29% pseudoturnover rate was almost 50% greater than our goal of 20% pseudoturnover. The majority of the error was attributed to observers overlooking species. Plot frame relocation error likely contributed as well but we were unable to separate it from overlooking error with our design.
