It is no unknown fact that children's literature has a very pivotal role in the nation-building process. Although many modern nations do not need this genre as a nation-building tool as they have support from their rich, well-recorded, socio-cultural history that has evolved over time to suit their own specific set of needs. But since our nation is a new addition among those older, deep-rooted nations, we need to utilize every tool at our disposal to make sure that we build a nation that is strong at its roots. In this article, this aspect of children's literature is scrutinized in length.&#x0

Pakistan has a grave problem of human capital. The majority of our children tend not to go to school. Instead they go to work. Policy on education and child labour has been clearly deficient in Pakistan. This policy failure, we feel is due to analytical deficiency in understanding the determinants and impact of children's schooling and labour. The theoretical framework of this study is based on five arguments. 1. Schooling, and child labour, are two aspects of the the same problem, the problem of why children do not go to school. Full text
Abstract:
This chapter analyses the triadic relationship between materiality, memory, and affect in the Indian picturebook Mukand and Riaz (2007) by Nina Sabnani. Set against the backdrop of the Partition of India and Pakistan, the book is based on the “fragmented memories” of Sabnani’s father, a child refugee at the time (Sabnani 2007). This chapter examines how the book connects microhistory to macrohistory. Specifically, the chapter looks into the ability of artefacts to embody individual emotions and collective experiences and explores how this ability is translated through the material poetics of the picturebook. The chapter suggests that this work’s layered approach to materiality provokes a fine-grained understanding of human-object relations, contributing to new materialist children’s literature studies.

Abstract:
Most of the European and American literature suggests that playing violent video games can increase aggression in real-life situations in children, but the extent to which this is true in Pakistan is largely unknown. This is a correlational study that explored whether the amount of time spent playing violent themed video games was associated with aggressive behaviour and whether playing different kinds of violent themed video games could predict aggressive behaviour in late childhood. The sample of 100 children (mean age 13.37) was taken, and children were asked to fill in a diary when they played videogames for a week. The results revealed the time spent playing violent video games (role play, action and fighting, and first-person shooter) was positively correlated with aggression; however, only role play and first-person shooter video games were positive predictors of aggressive behaviour. Current research suggests that if children spend more than 30 minutes a day playing violent video games, their chances of learning aggressive behaviour may increase.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract Although consanguineous marriages are widely contracted in many major human populations, there still is a remarkable lack of reliable information in the scientific literature with respect to their prevalence and associated biological outcomes. The inter-relationship between inbreeding and reproductive behaviour is a particular problem area, with the widespread belief that marriage between close biological relatives leads to reduced fertility. To permit a more critical assessment of this topic, at least with respect to India and Pakistan, extensive studies conducted into reproductive behaviour during the last two decades have been collated and analysed. By using these data it has been possible to determine the underlying factors, both biological and non-biological, which significantly contribute to the fertility of the populations investigated, with specific attention focused on the influence of consanguinity. As will become apparent, many past generalizations derived from the assumption that fewer children were born to close kin unions appear to lack foundation.

This review looks at approaches to promote birth registration among marginalised groups, in order to inform programming in Pakistan. It draws on a mixture of academic and grey literature, in particular reports by international development organizations. While there is extensive literature on rates of birth registration and the barriers to this, and consensus on approaches to promote registration, the review found less evidence of measures specifically aimed at marginalised groups. Gender issues are addressed to some extent, particularly in understanding barriers to registration, but the litera
