The article examines children’s clothes in the practices of everyday life in day care. The data for the article are drawn from an ethnography of three- to seven-year-old children’s day care groups in a day care centre intended for children of shift-working parents in southern Finland. Rather than focusing on the relations between identity, representation and clothing, the article examines what clothes do in the everyday practices of day care. Clothes are seen, first, as mediating perception, and, second, as taking part in and maintaining affective everyday practices. The effects of wearing clo

Abstract:
AbstractDelina Filkins was born May 4, 1815 in Stark, Herkimer County, New York, a small village of less than 2000 persons in the Hudson River Valley, Upstate New York. Her father, William Ecker, and mother, Susanna Herwick, were descended from Dutch and German settlers that came to the Mohawk Valley, New York, in the 1700s. Living her entire life in the same area within a ten-mile radius, her life spanned over 113 years. With the exception of her great age and her generally good health, Delina’s life was rather ordinary: she lived most of it on the family farm, helping with family tasks such as spinning yarn and making clothes. Delina married John Filkins, a local farmer, at age 18 and they had six (possibly seven) children together, two of whom outlived her. Delina was noted for her age in very late life, with local coverage from about 1916, then reaching national attention in the 1920s. With the understanding that Delina’s age was generally considered to be reliable by the press at the time, her case is a candidate for the earliest validated person to reach age 113+. This chapter takes a closer look at the case and the documents available and concludes that the amount and consistency of the available documentation suggest that Delina Filkins did indeed reach age 113 in 1928.

Abstract:
As an OC teacher and parent, I have learned that making responsible choices is an ongoing process. A few years ago, I envisioned myself as “Supermom.” I made sure my son was getting his nutritious, low-sugar lunch, and I tried to anticipate anything that could come up by laying out his clothes, lunch, and sports equipment the night before. Or I would pack up my other three kids, ages one to five, and drive 20 minutes across town to bring my son his forgotten books, papers, lunches, or sports equipment. I did this at least twice a week. I was great! I gave myself the “Mother of the Year Award.” Then one day Mark’s first-grade OC teacher met me at the classroom door and asked me to consider letting Mark go without lunch the next time he forgot it. She gave me an article to read on teaching kids responsibility. She said that without his sack lunch, he would be forced to find other options; he could charge his lunch in the school cafeteria, or he could ask his friends for help. Could this possibly work? The next time he forgot his lunch, I stayed home and waited, just knowing that he was probably going to starve. However, when he came home he was fine and happy—all of his friends had shared their lunches with him! After that incident, he started putting his own things by the door and getting them ready to go for school. Another day he had to sit on the sidelines at the pool when he forgot his swimming suit. From then on, he remembered to take his own sports equipment. As I allowed my son to experience the logical consequences of his behavior, he learned to be more responsible. Helping children to make responsible choices in school begins with making sure that choices are available, then allowing children to learn from the logical consequences of their choices, with support from adults in reflecting on the process and results. Parents are sometimes concerned about the children’s use of time because so many choices are available in the OC.

This chapter focuses on the building up of Zion’s infrastructure and people, who were also under constructions, in Utah during Brigham Young’s tenure as leader of the church (1844–77). This people building included flesh and bone bodies of Utah’s Native populations, Utah’s small African American community, and the European converts gathering to Utah. The Mormons set out to build a Lamanite people by employing the tools of civilization, including farms, clothes, grains, schoolhouses, and the (plural) marriage bed. They sought to free the Indians from their savage natures, freedom that would allow them to covenant with their white brethren. For those Indian women and children enslaved by Indian slavers like Wakara and Arapeen, the Mormons would buy them in order to save them. As the white Mormons’ pupils, servants, adopted children, and plural wives, these freed slaves would learn to choose the right and to become their Lamanite selves.

This chapter presents African American girls talking about, as Daryl Dance in Honey Hush said: “men, sex, clothes, hair, cooking, children, and then back to men and sex.” These subjects are approached in a dramatic and distinctly Black way. Girls handclap to “I like coffee/I like tea,” play “The boys like the bacon/The girls like the eggs,” and perform “When I was a baby” using distinctive body motions, intricate clapping, and specific utterances of encouragement. The ring play “I was goin’ to the lake” presents a rare case where girls replace gentle mothering with open aggression. These childhood games represent lore learned by carefully watching and listening to each other and older female relatives and friends.
