Wilson, Benjamin. "HOLDEN: REFLECTIONS ON CHILDHOOD AND CHILDREN’S MEDIA." OpenSIUC, 2010. https://opensiuc.lib.siu.edu/theses/410.

Full text
Abstract:
In the fall of 2009, filmmaker and media artist Benjamin Wilson began a creativeinvestigation into the theme of childhood, which had been present in his previous work but not closely examined and reflected upon. Wilson combined his personal experiences as a child along with his budding interest in the field of children’s media in the creation of Holden, an animated short film. What began as an exploration of the emergence of self and identity in children also became a questioning of the idea of advertising to children through media and treating them as consumers. Wilson hopes to expand the concept into a larger series of work, with the story world that he created in Holden serving as a platform for children to learn life lessons.

Grabowski, Anna. "“It’s not necessarily the app, the app can be a positive thing” : children’s perspectives on their own social media use." Thesis, Linköpings universitet, Institutionen för tema, 2020. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:liu:diva-175507.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis was motivated by the widespread use of social media by children, and the lack of research on perceptions of their own use. It expands on previous research which, while sometimes including children’s voices, largely focuses on the negative impact that social media has on well-being. Instead, this thesis seeks insight into children’s views on their and their peers use of social media, what motivates their particular use, and how they describe the positive and negative experiences of it. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with children between 12 and 15 years old and thematic analysis was used to consider the data, along with an interpretivist and contextualist epistemological approach. The themes included, firstly; social media as a place for children to connect and to spend time, secondly; positive experiences that included, learning and inspiration, fun and happiness, and perspective taking, thirdly; negative experiences relating to privacy and anonymity, bullying and bad feelings, and a lack of social clues, and lastly; a particular peer culture which included gender differences as part of their experience of using social media. The study concludes that, though research on social media and children has been largely looked at in terms of risk, children see it as a normalized aspect of childhood where they socialize with friends, spend time playing and learning about different things, and hang out with their peers. Social media is described as a neutral tool by the children. With this notion of neutrality, by further understanding children’s experiences and perspectives, there could be more support in ensuring that this tool is shaped and used in a way that works more in their best interest. Social media is inevitably a big part of children’s leisure time today, and ‘moral panic’, being a persistent rhetoric around childhood, may not be helpful for children.

Beamer, Paloma, Walter Klimecki, Miranda Loh, Horne Yoshira Van, Anastasia Sugeng, Nathan Lothrop, Dean Billheimer, et al. "Association of Children’s Urinary CC16 Levels with Arsenic Concentrations in Multiple Environmental Media." MDPI AG, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/617372.

Full text
Abstract:
Arsenic exposure has been associated with decreased club cell secretory protein (CC16) levels in adults. Further, both arsenic exposure and decreased levels of CC16 in childhood have been associated with decreased adult lung function. Our objective was to determine if urinary CC16 levels in children are associated with arsenic concentrations in environmental media collected from their homes. Yard soil, house dust, and tap water were taken from 34 homes. Urine and toenail samples were collected from 68 children. All concentrations were natural log-transformed prior to data analysis. There were associations between urinary CC16 and arsenic concentration in soil (b = -0.43, p = 0.001, R-2 = 0.08), water (b = -0.22, p = 0.07, R-2 = 0.03), house dust (b = -0.37, p = 0.07, R-2 = 0.04), and dust loading (b = -0.21, p = 0.04, R-2 = 0.04). In multiple analyses, only the concentration of arsenic in soil was associated with urinary CC16 levels (b = -0.42, p = 0.02, R-2 = 0.14 (full model)) after accounting for other factors. The association between urinary CC16 and soil arsenic may suggest that localized arsenic exposure in the lungs could damage the airway epithelium and predispose children for diminished lung function. Future work to assess this possible mechanism should examine potential associations between airborne arsenic exposures, CC16 levels, lung function, and other possible confounders in children in arsenic-impacted communities.

Björkholm, Richard. "Hur uppfattar föräldrar Babblarna som fenomen?" Thesis, Högskolan i Gävle, Media- och kommunikationsvetenskap, 2017. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:hig:diva-27894.

Full text
Abstract:
This essay discusses how parents perceive Babblarna as a toy and as a pedagogic instrumentation, Babblarna is children’s media aimed towards children however it’s bought by their parents that are persuaded by it for different reasons. One receptions analysis with interviews and a field research with blogs and forums was done. The results of it were then analyzed with the deconstruction theory and with Kim Schröder’s evaluation implentetion theory as a point of departure. This was then interpreted with the definition of what parenthood is. The conclusion is that parents perceived the term pedagogic after their own interpretation and that Babblarna was regarded as positive after how their children reacted. In the end can the reasoning be interpreted like a struggle between the child’s happiness and the reason of parenthood.

Abstract:
From our earliest days of childhood, our exposure to certain species is confusing and contradictory, with animals like the beloved characters who fill our storybooks moulded into unrecognisable shapes and served up to us in deceptively happy packaging. With a recognition of this cognitive dissonance as a starting point, this report seeks to highlight the inconsistency of teaching children to love and respect animals whilst at the same time to accept the eating and usage of them.  Whilst the topic of animal farming is finally beginning to be taken seriously in conversations about environmental sustainability, its ethical implications for both humans and nonhumans remain massively overlooked. My project aims to bring the conversation about animal rights to the forefront of our moral considerations with childhood education as an entry point.  In collaboration with a primary school class (ages 9-11) and an animal sanctuary, I ran a three-part workshop designed to encourage interspecies thinking and provide a space for students to critically evaluate mainstream attitudes and assumptions towards nonhuman animals and, by extension, to question current norms surrounding animal use and consumption.

Blank, Alyssa S. "The Framing of Myth in the Creation of a Palestinian Identity: Hamas, Fatah and Children’s Media." Thèse, Université d'Ottawa / University of Ottawa, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/19934.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is an exploratory examination of identity construction and children’s media, with a focus on the Palestinian political groups of Fatah and Hamas. It looks at how children’s media are framed within the context of the Arab-Israeli conflict. It examines how internal and external social factors contribute to identity formation and the interaction among these elements during times of conflict and war. This thesis hypothesizes that both Fatah and Hamas use various myths to differing degrees in order to frame their conception of a Palestinian identity. Specifically, it explores the use of the Myth of Battle, the Myth of Hero, the Myth of Victim, the Myth of Religion, the Myth of Land and the Myth of Other. It seeks to determine which of these myths each group emphasizes through a qualitative and quantitative visual ethnographic content analysis. The quantitative analysis uncovered interesting, albeit not statistically significant, differences between Fatah’s and Hamas’ use of all of the myths in their videos. Specifically it found that both groups made equal and great use of the Myth of Religion; that Hamas produced the videos with the greatest focus on the Myth of Battle and the Myth of Hero; and that neither group greatly emphasized the Myth of Victim, the Myth of Land or the Myth of Other. Finally, the analysis discovered positive correlations between the Myth of Hero and the Myth of Battle as well as between the Myth of Battle and the Myth of Other.

Noor, Myzan. "Dialogue, new media and children's intellectual development : re-thinking Malaysian teaching and learning approaches." Thesis, University of Hertfordshire, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/2299/14953.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines the extent to which ‘Talk or Dialogue’ contributes to children’s cognitive and psychological development when it is experienced through technological devices. The work analyzes some of the sociocultural theories of children’s speech, cognitive learning, psychological functions, sociocultural learning context, dialogic teaching and learning approaches in the classroom, social interaction and the use of social tools. The theory of speech is built on the Vygotskian notion of language as the prime cultural and psychological tool for children’s learning development in a sociocultural environment. Lev S. Vygotsky emphasised that the development of cognitive processes in children includes thinking, reasoning and understanding of a conceptualised social interaction. These processes are core to children’s intellectual learning. Vygotsky and the neo-Vygotskians emphasised the use of Speech, Talk or Dialogue and the Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD) concept in children’s learning development. In the UK, it was evident that the Talk teaching and learning approach (Mercer & Littleton, 2007) contributed effectively to children’s learning achievements. This approach reinforces Talk or Dialogue collaboratively in the classroom with the ZPD concept. The significance of the Talk teaching approach has encouraged this study to examine further children’s speech and the use of technological devices. Hence, a theoretical discourse methodology on children’s Talk or Dialogue was examined for the research outcomes. The aim is to devise a new teaching and learning approach that contributes to the Malaysian children’s intellectual development inside and outside the classroom through the use of Talk or Dialogue. As a result, a Dialogic framework is articulated based on four existing educational theories of children’s speech and learning. This framework is vital to contribute directly to the Malaysia Education Department Blueprint 2013-2025 in promoting children’s intellectual development. For that reason, two approaches are proposed which emphasise children’s psychological functions of perception, attention, sensory motor-operations and memory through the use of Talk and technological devices. These approaches accentuate the ZPD concept between the teachers and children for learning and activity games. This is the study’s contribution to new knowledge.

Abstract:

The purpose of this BA-thesis is to examine how many girls, boys, women and men who appear in children’s programmes in the years 1978, 1992 and 2007. We have also studied if they are described as typical gender role stereotypes and we have looked at the power conditions between girls and boys, women and men and children and adults. From the results we then examined the changes through out the years. We have made this possible by choosing two days each year when most children were watching the programmes.

With the gender role theory we have brought up the important issue of the fact that men appear more frequently in media then women and by doing so the media preserve men as the standard gender. You can also apply this theory on the condition of children and adults, where the adults are the norm in the generation system.

We have analysed the contents of the programmes by using a quantitative method and our results showed us that the equality between the sexes hasn’t improved as much as we had hoped for. The year 1978 sometimes had the same results as 2007 and at some parts the year 1978 was better than 2007. The year 1992 was not equal in any part except in the equality between the sexes in the starring role.

Cox, Rachel E. "Plasticity in Animated Children’s Cartoons: The Neoliberal Transforming Bodies and Static Worlds of OK KO and Gumball." Scholar Commons, 2019. https://scholarcommons.usf.edu/etd/7769.

Full text
Abstract:
Through the study of OK KO! Let’s Be Heroes! and The Amazing World of Gumball, I argue that children’s cartoons represent and recreate anxieties toward money’s plasticity in the plasticity of the cartoon bodies and worlds. I closely examine the ambivalence towards abstraction’s plasticity in contemporary children’s cartoons to trace the neoliberal ambivalence towards money’s plasticity. While much scholarship has grappled with what can be understood as animatic plasticity, very little of it takes on the questions raised about neoliberal culture by televised children’s cartoons. Cartoons are important to study in this respect because their form allows for unbridled plasticity. Cartoons provide the artists with the freedom to create characters and worlds that are as bound or unbound to our world’s norms and natural laws, unlike in other live action moving media. It combines this with the dynamic, temporal component of moving image media. Unlike a surreal painting, cartoons are capable of dynamic movement and transformation, even in their non-moving image form as comics. However, this plastic dynamism is most fully realized in the animated form, as the characters are capable of movement and change regardless of the viewers’ presence. Contemporary cartoons like OK KO and Gumball asymmetrically mobilize this plasticity by rendering the characters’ bodies as highly plastic while presenting their worlds as comparatively static. This aesthetic practice suggests that the world cannot be reshaped for a variety of reasons, so the only thing that individuals can do is try to change themselves as necessary to accommodate it. Thus, what at first blush looks like a celebration of plasticity is in reality a celebration of mere flexibility, which enables and perpetuates neoliberal power structures. Yet these same shows simultaneously challenge the neoliberal aesthetic project in their hyper-mobilization of non-diegetic plasticity. When the shows mobilize their plasticity in a way that is not narratively impactful, such as through cutaways, inserts, or other asides, the plasticity is instead framed as comedic and thus enjoyable. This suggests that while presenting character and world plasticity as equally valid would be natural next step for animated aesthetics, the major limitation contemporary animation faces is in reality the uneven treatment of diegetic and non-diegetic plasticity.

Thesis, Stockholm University, Department of Child and Youth Studies, 2009. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:su:diva-28837.

Abstract:

Interactive media technologies like the Internet and video games have opened new avenues of opportunity for many, yet at the same time they represent new challenges and risks, especially for young people.

In our study, eleven families were interviewed. Their perceptions, experiences and risk management are described in this paper. The children we interviewed were not high media consumers. The vast majority appeared to have a positive attitude towards the Internet, and had learned to handle common interactive media challenges and risk. Nonetheless some online behaviors which we consider risky were indeed commonly practiced. The most commonly encountered risk experienced by children in our study was exposure to undesirable content. Yet, in a group of eleven children two had been victim of cyberbullying and one had been harassed by some classmate or family member.

The most recurrent negative comments parents made about the internet or video games and children were about the danger of being contacted by strangers, as well as the excessive use of the interactive media technologies.

Abstract:
This research contributes to understanding the attitudes of Russian politicians towards sex education in schools and the kind of argumentation styles they use to oppose it. The paper is based on a framing analysis of the arguments of two important opponents to sex education: Pavel Astakhov, a Russian politician and former Children’s Rights Commissioner from 2009 to 2016; and Yelena Mizulina, Chairman of the State Duma Committee on Family Affairs, Women and Children since 2008, using online media sources in a ten-year period (2011-2021). The analysis finds that Astakhov’s most used frames are the disapproval of children’s exposure to new, different attitudes, the interference in Russian traditions by the West and the spread of a gender discourse in Russia. Mizulina focuses mainly on the unfitness of teachers since sex education should only be addressed by parents, and on the “right age” to start talking about it with young people. From the results, both politicians seem to strongly oppose comprehensive sex education (CSE), but Astakhov proposes to adopt a type of abstinence-only curriculum (AO), while Mizulina tries to completely discourage sex education of any kind for school-aged children.

Abstract:
Many people believe that the analogue picture book is a dying media due to the increase of digital media. Contrary to popular belief, the publishing of children’s book in Sweden is continually increasing, which makes mapping the field quite significant. But to regulate the creation of a children’s picture book is problematic, because one does not want to impede the personal style of the writer or the illustrator of the children’s book. If the children’s book creator has an understanding of how to better communicate with children, the children’s book might have a grater impact on the child. Little research has been performed on what one should think about when creating a children’s book, which makes this study highly relevant. My approach to the problem was to make a literature review over preceding research and to test the different directives, by creating an original children’s picture book and then testing the book, and thereby the directives, on the targeted audience. Consequently the picture book and the associated data gathered, suggest 20 design guidelines for picture books for children between 3 and 6 years. Each subcategory, of the guidelines suggested, should be investigated to confirm validity and reliability.

Title: Law of Marketing – A Descriptive Study of Marketing in Sweden and Italy with focal point on TV-commercials (Marknadsföringsrätt – En deskriptiv studie av marknadsföring I Sverig och Italien med inriktning på TV-reklam)   Number of pages: 34   Author: Astrid Lidman   Tutor: Göran Svensson   Course: Media and Communication C   Period: Fall -09   University: Division of Media and Communication, Department of Information Science, Uppsala University   Purpose/Aim: My goal with this study is to see the differences and similarities that can be found in the Swedish and Italian Law of Marketing. I want to compare the results to see how our different laws are still able to reach the same results concerning the protecting of our public from bad advertisement.   Material/Methods: I’ve been reading laws concerning marketing. I started out my research from different commissions from EU. Then I found the equivalent laws to those commissions in both Sweden and Italy I was able to see how the two different states apply the commissions to their legal system. By doing so I also got a starting-point by getting the most important laws in both the Swedish and Italian legal system concerning marketing and commercials on TV.   Main results: Since both Sweden and Italy apply the commissions from EU to their legal system, the differences were only superficial. Due to the commissions the base, of what is consider as bad marketing, was virtually the same. And when looking at the big picture they both achieved almost the same protection to their public that I think can be considered reaching high standards. The differences lay in the protection of commercials on TV towards children, and that Sweden has a little bit more regulation during the discussions about the protection concerning sexual discrimination.   Keywords: Laws of Marketing, TV-commercials, prohibition of children’s commercials, inappropriate business methods, misleading advertisement, commissions, EU.

Abstract:
The usage of Internet has increased among children. Much of that use comes from watching videos and playing games. There are a few services that cater to this need and Barnkanalen is one of them. However, in order for the service to be usable to children it needs to be adapted for them and content needs to be easily available. Children with no or little reading ability and writing skills need extra attention since they simply can not type correctly what they are searching for into a search field. This paper explores children’s preferred search strategies and what problems they experience on one of the major websites designed for children by conducting a user study. The user study was based upon a usability evaluation method called Constructive Interaction, where the children collaborated in pairs to solve search related tasks given to them. It was conducted at an after-school center in Bromma, Stockholm. 19 children aged 6-8 participated. The results indicate that the computer user interface and search functionalities of Barnkanalen need some improvements. The children with more developed spelling skills often have no problems, finding what they are supposed to find, when they know the title of the show. When the children did not have the knowledge of the titles or could not spell them they experienced some difficulties in finding what they were looking for. Most would browse the page, scrolling through the content being presented in horizontal lists. Some children got stuck in repetitive search loops; some were not paying enough attention and missed what they were looking for when it showed up on the screen. The children also had a hard time clicking on what they wanted to click at. Only four children had prior experience of visiting Barnkanalen on a computer but almost all of the children had experience using Barnkanalen on tablets or smartphones. The results led to recommendations on how to improve the site. For example, show titles in English should be allowed to be spelled phonetically, certain buttons need to be bigger, making Barnplay the start page of Barnkanalen and a virtual assistant is proposed.

This concern has (in most cases) generated a moral panic, involving campaigning by moral guardians and office spokespeople, calls for greater regulation and subsequent response from the government or designated regulators. Based on continued inconclusive media effects research and debates over adults' and children's rights, regulation has become increasingly problematic. Such questions as how far you should restrict and protect children and how it may be possible to balance protection with rights, are complex and fraught with practical difficulties. These are the kind of questions that regulators have currently to consider. In addition, media convergence and internet technology threaten traditional regulatory structures. Such developments pose a further regulatory quandary. How are regulators attempting to tackle these issues? The thesis attempts to examine this question by exploring how regulators have responded to panics over children's media and whether their attempts have resulted in robust regulatory systems. The regulation systems analysed embrace advertising and obesity, internet chat-rooms and grooming, video games and violence and cinema regulation (the 12A classification). Case studies of these particular areas of current concern show how regulation has developed and how it works in practice, assess whether such regulation is effective and if not, recommends ways in which it could be improved.

Abstract:

This study intends to examine why the Swedish children’s programme Bolibompa is produced the way it is during a larger catastrophe. Our intention was to find out how the editorial staff, in the children’s department in the public service television of Sweden (SVT),was handling the Estonia disaster, the September 11 attacks and the Asian Tsunami. To accomplish that, we first had to find out how the children’s programme looked during these catastrophes and also understand how the editorial staff was working with children’s programme during ordinary days.

To achieve our purpose we have been interviewing five persons from SVT, who was involved in producing the children’s programme during these three catastrophes. The method we used was qualitative research interview and theories of socialisation, media effects, social responsibility and theories of rhetoric mass media guided our study.

We found out that the editorial staff was producing the children’s programme differently during each catastrophe. When the Estonia disaster occurred, the children’s programme was delayed because of extended news. Next to the children’s programme a host was talking directly to the children trying to explain the accident. The day after the September 11 attacks the host of the children’s programme was discussing the catastrophe with invited guests in the TV studio. The editorial staff thought that many children were frightened at the time and that explains why they decided to keep a conversation. During the Asian Tsunami, SVT was broadcasting a Christmas special, and the children’s programmes weren’t changed at all, mostly because a break in the Christmas series would cause a lot of problems.

Pettersson, Hannes. ""Kissing Cousins" : En kritisk diskursanalys av hur homosexualitet framställs i utvalda anime och hur de behandlats i de amerikanska versionerna av dessa." Abstract:

The purpose of the thesis is to explore how homosexual discourses are represented in chosen japanese children’s cartoons (anime) and how these have been altered when imported to the USA.

With benchmark of Norman Fairclough’s discourse analysis model, key scenes from the chosen anime Cardcaptor Sakura and Sailor Moon have been analysed from a queer theoretical perspective.

In the anime I have studied, homosexual characters are represented with respect and it's rarely focused on homosexuality. However, some heteronormative patterns appear in the sense of masculinity and femininity being supplements also when it comes to same-sex couples. Moreover homosexuality is not always obvious in it's representations, which can either be a sign of trying to make it invisible or include it on the same conditions as heterosexuality. In the American versions, homosexuality has been totally censored with methods such as scene cuts and altered dialouges. In one case a man was made into a woman, making the relationship heterosexual. In another case a couple was made into cousins instead of lovers.

Abstract: During an one-year period, in three times (day zero, after six and 12 months), the right and left footprints of 131 healthy children were collected. Each children was aged from one to seven years old, being from a nursery of Cidade Universitária in Barão Geraldo, Campinas, São Paulo. From each of the 786 footprints the Chippaux-Smirak index was obtained, then categorized according to the modified Volpon method and finally calculated its area. For this calculation the footprint were scanned using a 75 dpi resolution in shades of gray, and the resulting images were saved in BMP format, where each pixel is a simple point of a graphic image (0.001156 cm2). The area calculation was done in three phases: segmentation; cleaning and limitation of the image contour; measuring of the image in pixels. The extent of the area was obtained by multiplying the number of pixels of the footprint by the pixel area (0.001156 cm2). Two area measures were taken, one called total for which the entire footprint was measured and the other called restrict. The objective was to verify whether the digital measure of some of these areas had the same diagnosis capacity and distinction in relation to the Chippaux-Smirak index for the study of the children medial longitudinal arch development. The analysis of the Chippaux-Smirak index and the Volpon classification in each age group over one year and of all footprints grouped by age made possible to conclude that the formation of the longitudinal plantar arch starts at three years, becomes more evident about five, but does complete until seven years. Although the measure of the total and restricted area has increased proportionally with age and foot length, it has been observed best fit between the restricted area with the Chippaux-Smirak index (R = 0.39, R2 = 0.15). However it was not possible to obtain discriminatory values by this measure for the classification of foot types for children between one and seven years old

Abstract:
Screen-based educational media, as an extension of the schooling process whose history has mirrored brick and mortar institutions, have traditionally espoused narratives of Eurocentricity, shifting relatively recently to multicultural yet simultaneously raceless narratives. While many viewers have learned from and been inspired by these media, the enthusiastic response to the film Black Panther (2018), as demonstrated by financial earnings and sustained social media energy, revealed an intense yearning in the Black community for media positively centering the strengths and successes of Black lives. Launched from the sociocultural fervor for Black concordance in media, and extending concordance into the educational media landscape, this qualitative study sought to assess responses from African-American children, ages 3-8, to educational media concordant to them, and contextualize these responses in recognition of race socialization patterns within the home. Children’s responses to the media ranged from acknowledgment of skin color as well as hair texture and style, to full identification with and enthusiasm for animated protagonists. Caregivers responded positively to the samples while self- reporting varying degrees of race socialization. These responses demonstrated promising potential for identification with concordant educational media based on phenotypic resemblance, particularly for children approximately 8 years of age.

Abstract:
This study is an examination of the social world of children's story writing, focusing on the way children use the agency offered to them in the context of the' writing process' pedagogy as a way of negotiating existing practices to position themselves in the discursive field of the classroom. Using methods from teacher-research and ethnographic traditions, I collected data from the class I was teaching, focusing on six children aged eight to nine. Data collection included observations of social interactions, photocopies of stories children wrote, interviews with children, group discussions, tape recordings of children talking while writing stories, and a diary of my experiences as a teacher-researcher. Using a form of discourse analysis, I focused on three areas in my data analysis: writing process, media consumption and production, and identity work. My analysis shows the ways children negotiate with and manipulate school practices in order to include their peer cultures in writing workshop, indicating children's understanding of school practices and concern with their social positions. In my study I show how popular media, a significant element of peer culture, is used by children in story writing as a way of establishing and defining personal identities and friendship groups. It is through friendships and often within the context of talk around media that children define, perform, and to some extent play with their gendered identities. The conclusions of my study point to a need for educators to recognise the way discursive practices of school create a very narrow definition of' acceptable stories' in classrooms. The practices problematise stories which contain media, and therefore teachers overlook and misunderstand many of the things children are doing during the process of writing media-based stories.

Abstract:
Although digital media has been exploited to improve digital libraries, social networking sites, and book promotion for adult and child stakeholders, but encouraging children who have the choice to either read from a book or on a screen remains limited worldwide, including Jordan. This interest has meant that data about children¿s reading habits were needed, and the present study was intended as a contribution towards this aim. Interviews were conducted with Jordanian writers, publishers, child specialists, and various children¿s cultural centres. The managers and personnel unanimously showed that Jordanian children are not good readers and that a limited number of books are published for children as there are actual boundaries preventing Jordanian writers from publishing books. In particular, subjecting the typical sorts of children¿s websites ¿ 'Club Penguin', 'PBS Kids', 'A Story before Bed', 'Baraem', 'Storyline Online', and 'Raneen' ¿ to evaluation showed that 'Club Penguin' got the highest rank among the other websites in terms of multimodal features, usability, and language, while 'PBS Kids' got the highest rank regarding interactivity, and 'A Story before Bed' got the highest rank in reading activities. Although it was realised that most children were satisfied with the aspects of usability and ease of use rather than the structure or the aesthetic of the website, and were more attracted to the websites that provide multimodal features such as special characters, narration, gesture, and interactivity. The targeted websites¿ parameters obtained from the survey were used as guidance in the design structure of the KITABAK website, as a virtual reading environment for children¿s reading practices. The evaluation results that were obtained showed that there is a significant correlation towards encouraging children¿s reading habits and reading from printed books accompanying the website; girls showed more interest in reading iv than boys; and there is an obvious willingness for the adaptation of the website as a part of the Jordanian school curriculum. In addition, the KITABAK website was accepted significantly more than 'Club Penguin', mainly because the KITABAK website has facilities, games and reading activities. Also, results showed that children who were subjected to testing the KITABAK website for a one-week period proved to accept the website significantly more than those who were subjected to testing it once.

Abstract:
Researchers indicate repeated participation in violent video games increases the likelihood of aggressive and hurtful behavior toward others. Media violence is one of the most studied phenomena affecting children over the age of 8. Media violence has become accessible for very young children through various sources. The purpose of this study was to explore perspectives of parents and teachers of children 5 to 8 years old regarding children's exposure to violent media, their definitions of violent media, and parental monitoring practices. Questionnaires were completed by 35 parents, and 6 agreed to participate in face-to-face or telephonic interviews. Four teachers from kindergarten through second grade participated in face-to-face interviews. Bronfenbrenner's model of human ecology was the conceptual framework. A combination of a priori and open coding was used to support thematic analyses. Participants indicated they need to be more informed about the possible effects that exposure to violent media, specifically video games, has on children. Both parents and teachers noted that often it was the younger children, specifically of kindergarten age, who were exposed to the most amount of time with violent media. Implications for positive social change included ways to properly monitor children's access, such as more restrictions on time and content of the media. This research could provide support to advocacy groups to provide parents, educators, and policymakers with reliable data on children's media use and the impact it has on children.

Abstract:
The aim of this study was to explore how children construct identity through their engagement with a variety of media and communication technologies. This research was conducted with ten children who were aged between nine and ten at the start of the study and lived in Malta, a small bilingual island in the Mediterranean. Over the past two decades, the media has become a central phenomenon in the lives of Maltese children and as with their counterparts abroad, they are provided with broader opportunities for social relationships and space to interact and construct identity. By adopting a social constructionist perspective, this study examined how Maltese children's engagement with the media contributes towards the construction of their identities and likewise, how it is shaped by their identities. The research design consisted of a series of online interactive sessions followed by small group interviews between the children and the researcher. The findings from this study showed that by actively engaging with the media, the children used various strategies to move through three stages, namely initiating, sustaining and extending the media experience. The researcher identified a number of discourses which the children drew upon in their engagement with the media, namely; an interplay between local and foreign media, parental regulations, intergenerational attitudes towards the media and perceptions of difference. This study has also identified three distinctive identity descriptors which are the learner, hobbyist and consumer. These identity descriptors could possibly be grouped as relating to social practices. Given the historical and cultural conditions of the Current era, they seem to emerge at an early age and could potentially last until later on in life.

Abstract:
In addition to the high prevalence of otitis media with effusion (OME), researchers are motivated to develop methods for early and accurate OME diagnosis because of the financial strain on the health care system associated with its diagnosis and management, and the medical and developmental consequences that may manifest if OME is left untreated. Standard (226 Hz) and high frequency (1000 Hz) tympanometry have traditionally been used clinically to assess middle ear status in children. A relatively new advanced middle ear analysis technique is Wideband reflectance (WBR). WBR has the potential to provide more information regarding the status of the middle ear than the methods currently being used clinically. This technique provides frequency-specific information about sound conduction through the peripheral auditory system. As a result of its recent introduction as an analysis method there is limited normative data available for this measurement system for pediatric populations and for those with middle ear pathology. Development of normative pediatric WBR data may render this technique a highly useful diagnostic tool for assessing the mechano-acoustical properties of middle ear function and for differentiating between healthy and pathological middle ears. WBR patterns from 55 subjects (102 ears) with normal middle ear status and 39 subjects (57 ears) with varying degrees of middle ear pathology were measured. The mean and the 5t h and 95t h percentile ranges were graphically presented. Repeated measures analysis of variance was performed with frequency as the within subjects factor and age (child versus adult), middle ear condition (normal, mild negative pressure, severe negative pressure or effusion), race (Caucasian versus Chinese) and/or gender as the between subjects factors. Frequency-specific significant WBR pattern differences existed for reactance-based and impedance-based measures, between pediatric and adult groups, Caucasian children and Chinese children, and all four middle ear conditions. Wideband reflectance must be further explored within a pediatric population before results can be generalized, but this measurement technique shows promise of providing a better understanding of the mechanico-acoustic properties of the middle ear and the changes to the system's functioning with middle ear pathology.

Abstract:
This study examined the media consumption of the Japanese sojourners in London which is the largest Japanese diaspora in Europe. Japanese sojourners are sent by their companies and tend to upgrade their lifestyles supported by the employers. F:I,e ven Japaneses ojourners' families who had children aged five to eight participated in this study, being visited every two months over a year Using ethnographic methods in which in-depth interviews, participant observations, and digital photos by the children and me were used, the data were gathered. Life-course analysis was also used to examine to understand how and why they use particular media. The research aims are to understand the relationship between their media consumption and the everyday lives of Japanese soj oumers' families in London, explore children and mothers' identities while they sojourn, study their particular media consumption patterns, critically analyse the media products which the families consumed and experienced, and investigate the mothers' childrearing in a host country where they consider their children's future in Japan, including the significance of language. Through the ethnographic research which produced rich data, the children and mothers' changing identities, focusing on hybrid identities were studied. Hybrid identities were examined through the hidden voices of those women who devote themselves into home and children's talks and their everyday lives. Additionally, their particular media consumption patterns led to rethink today's roles of Japanese diasporic and global media in a diaspora, Britain and Japan's policies on multiculturalism, and urban environment where children live.

Abstract:
This paper addresses many concepts and concerns related to the previously underexplored topic of CGI and narrative in Hollywood children’s films. Through an analysis of scenes from Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, The Chronicles of Narnia, The Golden Compass, The Spiderwick Chronicles, and Inkheart it demonstrates that CGI spectacle does not exist in opposition to narrative progression as some scholars have suggested. Instead, by drawing on theorists like Lefebvre and Furstenau (2002), this investigation asserts that belief in fictional realism is paramount to spectatorship. It is shown that CGI can be used in a way that respects realism in the Bazin tradition and continuity editing in order to allow the spectator to believe in the fictional reality of narrative events. This belief is then connected to the emotional engagement of the spectator by drawing on ideas from Smith’s (1994) structure of sympathy. The ultimate goal of this paper is to present a conceptualization of CGI that creates a stronger distinction between reality and film realism than previous literature has suggested.

Abstract:
This qualitative and explanatory study focuses on the concept of ‘media witnessing’, which concerns witnessing media texts performed in, by, and through the media. The aim is to determine how people from different backgrounds engage with news photographs of Syrian children which went viral in 2015 and 2016. Furthermore, this study uses the analytical framework of media witnessing created by Maria Kyriakidou (2015). The framework was made to analyse four different reactions to distant, mediated suffering: affective, ecstatic, politicised and detached. This framework is tested and adapted for this study to identify the engagement experience of individuals with new viral photographs. These photographs were taken by professional photojournalists. The data was collected via semi-structured, two-person interviews known as dyadic interviews. Participants were recruited by way of purposive and snowball sampling. In the end, four dyadic interviews were conducted which involved eight individuals in total. During each interview, two participants looked together at four viral news photographs and discussed their thoughts and feelings based on an interview guide. All dyadic interviews were audio-recorded and transcribed. The study material—four transcripts—was finally analysed using a thematic analysis method. Themes were based on modes of media witnessing. The analysis reveals a fifth mode of response—first-hand witnessing—which is linked to an individual’s own experience and past. Finally, this study claims that an adapted framework constitutes a suitable way to analyse people’s engagement but that there is a need for further study of media witnessing.

Abstract:

The media’s ability to frame a news story, or to slant it in a particular direction and thereby shape public perceptions, is a powerful tool with implications for material effects in society. In this thesis, a Multimodal Critical Discourse Analysis of the words and photographic images used in the framing of Life magazine’s September 14, 1953 article, “The Lonely Men of Short Creek,” is combined with contextualization of the story within the historical, sociological, and regional settings that may have affected its ideological content. This provides insights into Life’s editorial perspectives and potential audience response. “The Lonely Men of Short Creek” is an account that some writers have suggested contributed to a laissez-faire attitude towards the polygamist community of Short Creek, Arizona, in which a failure to enforce state laws allowed child sexual abuse to continue unhindered there for the next half century. This analysis of Life’s account demonstrates its overall sympathetic framing of Short Creek in 1953, particularly of male community members, and the construction of a narrative with significant absences and misrepresentations that obscured or concealed darker themes. Life’s construct has in certain aspects been replicated today in what some consider to be the “definitive” account of the story, which repeats a persistent tale of religious persecution, compromised constitutional rights, and an overbearing state’s “kidnap” of the children of an apparently innocent and harmless rural polygamist community. Such a narrative has deflected attention from an alternative frame—that of a community charged with multiple crimes, including the statutory rape of children manipulated by adults within a religious ideology that demanded plural “wives.” This thesis contends that in 1953, these children were overlooked, or ignored in a fog of often taken-for-granted US national ideologies and editorial perspectives relating to religious freedom and the “sacred” nature of the family in the post-Korean War and Cold War era. Such findings raise questions about the ethics of partisan framing of news stories in which alleged victims are implicated, acceptable limits of religious and family rights, and the often un-interrogated national ideologies sometimes used to justify harmful or criminal behaviors.

Scott, Fiona. "Young children's engagement with television and related media in the digital age." Thesis, University of Sheffield, 2018. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/22928/.

Abstract:
This thesis is one output of a White Rose Doctoral Training Partnership (WRDTP) Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) studentship, devised by The Universities of Sheffield and Leeds in partnership with CBeebies. Taking a sociomaterial approach (Barad, 2003) to digital literacies in early childhood, this thesis focuses on United Kingdom (UK) preschool children's intra-actions and social practices (Wohlwend, 2009) with television and related media (TV&RM) at home. It examines how both well-established and new verbal and non-verbal intra-actions constitute children's unique social practices. Drawing on Bourdieu's notion of habitus (1977), this thesis asks how social class is implicated in these practices. These inquiries are addressed empirically using a mixed-methods approach. The results of a UK-wide survey of 1,200 parents of preschool children and ethnographic case studies with 6 families in Sheffield, UK are presented. Several original contributions to empirical, theoretical and methodological knowledge are made in this thesis. Firstly, in their everyday engagements with TV&RM, preschool children amalgamate fragments of media texts with other material and/or immaterial things to constitute synthesised texts ('synthesised practices'). Secondly, preschool children and their families share habitus in relation to TV&RM ('family media habitus'). Thirdly, preschool children have relationships with narrative media texts without ever having engaged directly with them, via proxies including physical artifacts and social contact ('proxy media engagement'). Fourthly, family members engage with preschool children's TV&RM interests in ways which extend their learning in relation to literacies. Middle-class families use their children's TV&RM interests as the basis for engaging children in school-like literacies learning ('media practice schoolification'). Working-class families tend to extend their children's TV&RM interests in terms of operational, critical and cultural digital literacies and embodied literacies. Methodologically, the thesis develops a framework for 'Sociomaterial Nexus Analysis' and 'nexus mapping'.

Abstract:
An increasing number of Swedish children have access to connected media devices and as the European Union General Data Protection Regulation will soon be implemented, on May 25th, 2018, it creates new options for parents. The GDPR suggests that parents will have greater freedoms to manage children’s data. However, this thesis questions that notion with governmentality theory and investigate how these choices will be met by the parents. Previous research propose that media literacy is the ability to access, evaluate and create messages that better reflect citizens’ realities, carrying hopes of democratisation. The accounts of five Swedish families portray an absence of adequate media literacy competencies to manage children’s online safety, regarding commercial data processing. Not only revealing difficulties in complying with the GDPR, but also that media literacy competencies alone would not make the families interviewed more engaged in changing habits regarding their privacy. Indicating that the parents equated GDPR to obsolete choices, where partial or full opt-out would cause a greater menace than the commodification of children’s data.
